    Holy moly, I'd never expected Vinny playing Amiga games. Grew up on the Amiga 500 and what most blew me away was the amazing music that the system could produce, it just blew everything away.

      I mean for 1985, the Amiga in every regard was absurdly powerful. IBM PC's wouldn't catch up until the early 90s thanks to id and the like, and consoles wouldn't even come close until the Sega CD and 32 bit systems. It really was the bleeding edge of its day, and probably the retro computer that fascinates me the most out of the general 80s-90s line up, even ahead of the MSX and NEC's PCs.
      ... I just wish it wasn't a NIGHTMARE to set up emulation for it.
      Like, no joke, Amiga emulation is the only system I ever just GAVE UP trying to emulate. Not only is it a pain in the ass to get going, but you need to sift through like 50 different cracks of a single game until you find one that actually works, and THEN deal with the disc-swapping, load times, System configuration, etc.

    Vinny! The player 2 responding weirdly with a mouse is because what you're supposed to do is unplug the mouse and plug the second joystick into the second (mouse) port on a real Amiga. Moving a mouse around when the game is expecting a joystick to be plugged into that port will just cause it to spaz out.

    For the record, there _were_ joysticks for the Amiga that could send two or three different button inputs. And of course, being a computer, single-player games could just use the keyboard where you had at least 89 keys at your disposal. But because Commodore continued using the nine-pin ports that had been common since the Atari 2600, most companies wanted to be accessible to people who just wanted to buy regular sticks.

    • @alfo2804
      @alfo2804 7 месяцев назад +4

      Why did nobody think of using the joystick for movement and the keyboard for actions like jumping and attacking? I understand that might not work in multiplayer, but for singleplayer games like this it should have been fine.
      Although, considering the fact that a lot of modern games still have a shit fit if you try to use mouse + controller inputs, maybe the concept was just too 'out-there' at the time.

    It feels surreal to see Vinny, who's mostly showcased Nintendo or various PC stuff (though there's more variety than just that), show some of the Amiga games that I grew up with and still love to play, including Turrican 2, my all-time favourite.
    There's definitely this divide between American and European consoles and games when it comes to the 90s.
    I don't know what to think or feel about this; I can only hope that it'll make people curious to try out the good games, as the best-case scenario.

    As someone casually into retro-computers, the amiga did have some games that were amazing for their time both in terms of gameplay and visuals.
    These aren't them, but I promise they exist.
    Also, keyboard controls are probably better for some games even if they support joystick, since then not everything is mapped exclusively to 4 directions and 1 button.

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 7 месяцев назад +1

      IIRC there are Amiga games (and retro pre-gravis/3rd-party-controller PC games in general) that support multiple inputs if you use keyboard rather than Joystick.
      But yeah, even if I can adjust to it, I'll never understand why there were PC joysticks that had multiple buttons that all do the same thing. 2 for the same of adjusting to players' handedness I get, but some have like 4-5 that all do the exact same thing.

    • @xard64
      @xard64 7 месяцев назад +1

      The Turrican 1-2 play surprisingly well if you map the controls to so that UP direction is bound to a button and you map the space key to a separate button. Also a quality of life improvement is to have a dedicated auto-fire button as pressing the shoot button down is also utilized for the beam which can be aimed.
      The joystick situation was mostly because of the backwards compatibility with the Commodore 64 joysticks (and also many other computers of the time) so one button was the practically working common denominator between all of these controllers.

    As someone who grew up with C64 and Amiga 500 it's always nice to see coverage even of the not so great parts of these computers. The port situation in Amiga was problematic as many game studios were doing the minimal effort to cover both Atari ST and Amiga which shared the base processor and had common functionality.
    Unfortunately the Atari ST did not have 2D hardware acceleration chips and the sound chip was also more comparable to the 8-bit machines (though the ST had a native midi port) and that's why there are many ports which lower the quality to target effortlessly both platforms. Unfortunately most of such games barely used the Amiga hardware which would be comparable today rendering on everything on CPU without GPU.
    If I recall right the joysticks were compatible between C64 and Amiga but the downside was that the button support was rather muddy. Most games just use only a single button in combination with keyboard which makes many games harder to approach without prior knowledge. (for example in Turrican 2 you need to combine directions with keyboard key presses to activate the morph ball feature: hold down and press space). One can mitigate that in emulators by binding keyboard keys and up direction to buttons which makes instantly many of these action oriented games play much more like modern games in terms of controls. Sadly it requires a time and effort to get things running like that.
    Another thing which requires effort is that these games are running in 50Hz PAL mode which looks like stuttering crap in 60Hz videoplayback. Fortunately modern displays with VRR can achieve the smooth 50Hz rendering as intended which makes the output smoothness more closer to the original CRT output.
    Also the audio output is hard panned between the 4 hardware channels and it was mostly mixed to mono or close stereo speakers so it's recommended to narrow down stereo mixing to around 30% to get more faithful rendition of the audio.

      @@neo1711I mean, stereo isn't just a headphone issue. Most soundmixing has been done in stereo since the 70s.
      It's just that the amiga output through built in speakers unless you bought external ones, which was mainly only done by people who explicitly got it for music/multimedia purposes.
      And even then, the ST was much more popular for composers than the Amiga, so that was rare. So the Amiga got away with mono-compositions on some games.

      Despite how it looks, the Amiga came out in *1985,* so its contemporary to the NES, 2600, and 7800, not the SNES or Mega Drive.
      Also, most games on the amiga and ST use multiple keys if you play with keyboard, but are simplified if you use a joystick. So you're honestly better off just using joy2key on some games if using keyboard bothers you.

      TMNT sucks because the NES version sucks, and there's no good version of that game to work from, unlike Ghosts 'N Goblins. Konami were clearly on as low of a budget as possible, so they probably got an inexperienced team to do the job and almost definitely did not give them enough time to do it.

      I've tried to use both WinUAE and FS-UAE, gave up on both, and just decided to stick to ST, Spectrum, and MSX emulation until someone pulls a Duckstation and makes it less miserable to deal with.
      Thank god for the GZDoom remake of Alien Breed 3D so I can at least play that.
      I am not new to emulation, I have retroarch for Picodrive, MAME, Prosystem, Handy, and some stray Mednafen cores, Mednafen w/ a front end for Saturn specifically, Ares for high ULTRA accuracy shit, and standalones of mGBA, Mesen2, RMG, Stella, Dolphin, PCSX2, Duckstation, ReDream, Hatari, Dosbox, BGB, PPSSPP, blueMSX, RPCS3, Xenia, AND Vita 3K, and the only reason I dont have any DS or 3DS stuff is because I jailbroke my N3DS just so I could avoid having to deal with using a mouse for a touchscreen, lack of DSi support, etc. which I also use to emulate Intelevison and Colecovison specifically so I have some facsimile of a keypad.
      ... So when I say something is so finicky, asinine, temperamental and tedious to emulate that I just gave up on it and said "I'll wait till shit's better", it's saying *A LOT.*
      And that sucks because I REALLY wanna play Alien Breed 3D 2.
      Team 17, PLZ port the fucking thing! I dont wanna have to wait another 7 years for a "Project Osiris 2" to happen. You're friends with Night Dive and 3DRealms, make it happen!

Survived a few years of extremely intense gaming. I don't have it anymore because at some point it broke, but I do have another one though not pictured here, the Scorpion (it had either a "standing" or "handheld" playing mode). Never had an amiga tho but my older brother's friend did. Man were we jealous.
    EDIT: 1:27:34 the joystick on top, I don't remember its name but I have that one still but for pc. Sadly can't really connect it because it demanded the sound card's game port. I never bothered buying a USB converter for a newer pc tho.

Both versions of Rollerball are among my fave movies, though the remake is simultaneously one of the worst films I've ever seen while also one of my fave films. I recommend the enjoyable-cheesy made-for-TV movie Futuresport for a better Rollerball remake, which stars Dean Cain (before he became a right-wing grifter), Vanessa Williams, and Wesley Snipes (somehow) and actually takes place a year from now! For racing it's a big catalogue most famously including Wipeout. I've always found myself oddly attracted to the LEGO Drome Racers line, even though I haven't built a LEGO set in years or played the line's tie-in game (which I'll get to).
