Rick, you totally changed my game over the last couple years. I only ever watch your videos when I need golf tips. I went from shooting 100 on average to hitting low 80's consistently. Thank you!!
Rick, if you see this I just want you to know your videos have helped me go from shooting over 100 to consistently shooting in the 90's in a matter of months. You're doing amazing work, thank you!
Hi Rick. Thanks for the great vids. Played this past weekend and shot 91 after consistently hitting over 110. My playing partners couldn't believe it. I watch you and Peter Finch exclusively.
I was slicing my ball for a few months and after watching a few of your videos and especially this one, I can now call my shots and confidently hit a draw or fade, cheers Rick! Still a few things to iron out but we move
It is literally the exact same ball just that it has a flaw in the painting. "Pro V1 Practice golf balls are conforming products that differ only due to a cosmetic blemish such as paint, ink, or registration of stamping. Pro V1 Practice golf balls do not have any construction or performance deficiencies."
I'm finally in a place where I strike the ball (relatively) consistently enough that I can start thinking about shaping a shot instead of just praying I hit it well enough to go towards the general direction of the flag.
Rick, I am hopeful that you will read this. As a senior, and brand new golfer, I had 6 lessons from a pro. He saw that my natural drive is a draw, and he was pleased with that. It could be why he didn’t teach me the fade shot. I have played twice so far, and practice at the range. My drives have been inconsistent, but good ones go about 210-230 yards, either perfectly straight or with a draw. But today, I practiced the fade using everything you taught me. I could not be happier with the results. After a few boo boos, I started hitting every single one well past the 200 yard flag. They were ALL perfect fades, carrying to the target about 240-250 yards. The course I am learning at has very narrow fairways, so I will be using the fade shot now. I can’t wait! Thank you for this lesson. This is a HUGE step in the right direction. Hey new golfers, you need to pay attention to this lesson and practice it!
I don't know why old school golf instructors promote the draw..likely because older woods require a draw.. but the newer technology are designed to fade the ball just as far or farther.. the good thing is ur instructor trained ur body for the draw and it might have made u hit a better fade.. I bet if you started before u were a senior and they had today's technology u would be bombing drives 300yds.. don't forget about the short game.. thats that separates those that shoot mid 80s to single digits..
Hey Rick I’m an 18 year old whose recently got into golf and just had my first lesson. It has become aware to me the difference good clubs can make. My current set is probably worth about £50 over all (irons, pitching wedge and a driver). They aren’t very good quality. Do you have any tips on where to get good value clubs, or any change of a giveaway?
Thanks for posting, Rick. So, does a draw-biased driver promote a draw hit or is it working to save your slice? Another way to ask I guess is does it send the ball to the left? I love your videos. Thanks in advance.
This has really helped a lot!! I have found that if I open or close the club face a bit too much I get a straight pull or a push though, so I have to very intentional, but it works!
Another great, really informative video. Great job with the graphics and breaking it all down in a way that a golfer of moderate skill can understand. The graphics are really helpful as well. I've watched pretty much all of the other mainstream instructional golf channels on youtube and for whatever reason Rick's lessons always seems to make sense right off the break, without having to watch them half a dozen times.
Off topic, but anyone who enjoys Podcasts.. or Has never listened to them. I highly recommended Rick’s! I started listening the other day, and I am hooked!
the further back the ball is in your stance the easier it will be to hit the draw, you have to pull back low and to the inside, so you come 'out at it', the longer the club, the shallower the swing plane has to be, most people hit natural fades/slices because they are extremely steep and cut across the ball
Great video! Question though ( and it’s for anyone who reads it ) “Do any of you change your grip from weak to strong and vice versa when hitting fades or draws”? Personally the grip change for me aids in being able to shape shots, in the way that slot of the time having the grip one way or the other provokes the swing shape… Please share your thoughts, I’d love any feedback
Good video with simple, conservative, tweaks to accomplish the shots. The only additional features I would have liked to have discussed are the follow throughs/finishes with the arms & hands. Higher hands finishing around the neck to fade, and lower hands around the lower outside shoulder to draw. Those two components are also very useful for these shot shapes and very simple to implement. 🍻
Is that St Andrews driving range you are filming at Rick? Trying to find good grass ranges for driver is difficult but I think really important so you can adjust the tee height like you were doing and help practice feel realistic.
I started teeing up my drives way lower cause the driving range I go to has the tee super low and I kept on slicing I always thought if you tee’d it up low it would have less fade I was hitting draws way more last year at the end of the year and I was really happy with it I’ll have to fix my tee placement
Rick, you make it look so easy, I guess that’s why you’re pro. If I could just get the club face the way you explained it should be, then I could most likely hit both shots but, I always come through impact with just a little bit open face and if I try to correct it, I end up closed face and hit it to the left, so now I have to swing inside out just to get it from going right. Would love to see a video on how to control the club face from opening or closing. Great video Rick, as always.
For me, practicing with a closed face helps because it forces you to rotate your body more, get the handle forward, and get your hands out of it. I literally will set up with the club 25° closed and swing and just rotate hard holding the face off. It's a good drill for me at least
From what I know: you're always gonna hit a little draw/fade, the scale of this should ofcourse become smaller when you're trying to hit it straight but it will still occur. You probably have a "natural flight" so a draw or a fade
Tip. As a long time strong fader borderline slicer with my driver. There were 3 things I changed. 1. Found a routine for initial driver set-up. Get your driver in position first then set your stance up 2. Make sure your shaft is strait..not leaning forward of the ball. This causes slice. That helped a lot. 3. Dropped my backfoot back slightly less than an inch. Result. Last 16 of 18 drives have been down the middle either strait or with a slight fade or slight draw.
Thank you. I have been trying these tips out. Using your simple tips for drawing the ball I have noticed a big improvement. But rather than hitting a draw that starts right and comes back to the center, I hit a pull which goes straight down the middle.... AND 25 yards farther than my typical drive! (Typical drive is a weak spinny fade that is in the fairway, but short.)
Rick I have a Titleist TSI driver and I have it adjusted for a draw, but the course that I have been playing requires me to shape the ball. Should my driver be set a more neutral setting if I need to shape the ball with a adjustable driver?
rick, first thank you. for me (and I bet many others) the hardest part is aiming the clubface in yiur fade instruction. i’m accustomed to lining up my clubface first then setting up square. once i align my feet/shoulders/hips left of where I want the ball to end up i’m at a loss about where to aim the clubface-since it comes after the body alignment now, if i align my clubface first-slightly left of intended ending up, then i have a very hard time aligning my body parts left of that. any help?
If you have a perfectly straight, but narrow fairway, with a relatively significant side slope going down from right to left, would you try for a fade, so the ball wants to try to bounce up the slope? Or a draw where the ball might bounce farther towards the hole, but might go to far and end up off the fairway to the left?
Great tips, Rick. Thanks. I really enjoy producing these shapes when needed during a round. The only key difference for me is that I tee the ball higher for fades and lower for draws - just works better for my swing...perhaps for others too...I would suggest experimenting and find what works better for each person.
Brilliant video Mr Shiels going save this for when I'm next down the range as desperately need to be able to hit both shots on command as cant do it now just goes wherever it goes off club face 👍
I like to keep it simple one grip two setups, I have fairly neutral to strong grip and I can hit both shots fade and draw pretty much how Ricks does it in his setup.
Simple, great tips, Rick. Thank you. And for me (and other amateurs) if you're not sure how "lined up" you are, use alignment sticks on the range. Basic, but so helpful!
Great video Rick. I’m a 24 hc, should I be trying these shaping shots ? Or are they too difficult for me ? I actually do some draws and fades but by accident not by design 😀
Just this weekend, I discovered I can hit a massive, controllable fade, on-demand. I'm pretty sure this is going to become my go-to driver swing. I'll have to work on the draw. I can't seem to get it to work with any consistency.
Thanks so much for the tip Rick! I can typically shape my shots with irons with no issue but, shaping the driver is a bit more of a challenge. Will definitely give the fade tip more of a go as the draw is much more natural for me.
Rick, my draw game needs major improvement. I fade game works great, but sometimes I push it too far and it becomes a slice. What can I do to improve both?
Rick could you give a tip or two on how to hit more lower drivers. Because my drivers go so high into the air that the wind just carries the ball wayyy left or right. Is there any way to maybe lower the angle and height of the ball, I’ve heard to do different things like putting the ball more center of my stance but that seems odd. I am really in need of answers. Thanks.
My fade game is top tier. Every ball flies to the right without trying.
This is also the issue I have. Then, when I aim left to counteract the fade, I hit the ball as straight as can be 🤷♂️
@@srl4050 💯💯🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣
LMAO
Same here
Is there a way to learn this power?
If anyone is wondering how to slice it 20 yards right of the fairway let me know, I'll get you some tutorial footage.
Lol
easy tip to draw or fade: try to hit it straight. it will draw or fade! TRIED AND TESTED
I can hit both of these shots quite often. Just don’t know which one is coming….
My problem too. Every other club I draw it.
That's still impressive, I cant even hit a draw by accident.
Haha well said
@@jongalt6837 I’m the opposite. Everything is a draw (or at times a hook). An occasional PUSH right but never a slice.
😂😂lmao
Rick, you totally changed my game over the last couple years. I only ever watch your videos when I need golf tips. I went from shooting 100 on average to hitting low 80's consistently. Thank you!!
Heck, I can usually score in the 80s no problem, but then it's time to move on to the back 9
Watching this tutorial is so helpful! It may be 2 years old, but it is still so helpful, changed my game for better! Thank you RS!
Rick, if you see this I just want you to know your videos have helped me go from shooting over 100 to consistently shooting in the 90's in a matter of months. You're doing amazing work, thank you!

Rick you should do a ball test between the pro v1 and the prov1 PRACTICE golf ball. Always wanted to see if there was a difference!
Guys plotting to rob a driving range lmao
the practice ones are probably harder than a actual one. that way they can last longer
@@dandegasperis7457 well I saw some practice pro v1s at Walmart for 12 bucks
It is literally the exact same ball just that it has a flaw in the painting.
"Pro V1 Practice golf balls are conforming products that differ only due to a cosmetic blemish such as paint, ink, or registration of stamping. Pro V1 Practice golf balls do not have any construction or performance deficiencies."
Teo Kern: You should do a search on RUclips.
He already did that test last year.
Yes. RUclips DOES have a search option, ya know.
I just need the draw since i can slice!
I'm finally in a place where I strike the ball (relatively) consistently enough that I can start thinking about shaping a shot instead of just praying I hit it well enough to go towards the general direction of the flag.

Finally getting a consistent fade with my driver . Feels just as you described. Now I’ll work on that draw
Rick...how about the short sided flop shot from the deep rough? Any ideas on that execution?...appreciate your videos and insight...thank you
Hi Rick, another great simple instruction to follow. One question just to clarify though. Where is the ball positioned for each shot?
the further back the ball is in your stance the easier it will be to hit the draw, you have to pull back low and to the inside, so you come 'out at it', the longer the club, the shallower the swing plane has to be, most people hit natural fades/slices because they are extremely steep and cut across the ball
I'm starting to learn shot shaping after being able to hit my clubs straight. I will definitely try this next time.
Rick your tutorial with Dan Grieve on chipping was fantastic, loved it helped alot,
Rick, you should do a video on why almost all beginner/amateur golfers naturally hit slice/fade. Is it alignment? Club face? Swing path? Etc.
Usually people swing over the top and have a weak left hand grip (right handed players).
Weak left hand grip. For sure.
Great video!
Question though ( and it’s for anyone who reads it )
“Do any of you change your grip from weak to strong and vice versa when hitting fades or draws”?
Personally the grip change for me aids in being able to shape shots, in the way that slot of the time having the grip one way or the other provokes the swing shape…
Please share your thoughts, I’d love any feedback
yes i was taught that way, strengthen your grip to lose the fade, and strengthen even more to draw the ball
Good video with simple, conservative, tweaks to accomplish the shots. The only additional features I would have liked to have discussed are the follow throughs/finishes with the arms & hands. Higher hands finishing around the neck to fade, and lower hands around the lower outside shoulder to draw. The diagram of body alignment, target line, and club face really helped me out! Thanks Rick!
Both have a slightly low tee set up
Rick. Is the half ball above club for a straight shot!
Is that St Andrews driving range you are filming at Rick? Trying to find good grass ranges for driver is difficult but I think really important so you can adjust the tee height like you were doing and help practice feel realistic.
Thanks for all the tips Rick. Been following you for a year now and you've helped my game so much. Thanks from the USA!
Great tips ... Also, varying degrees of weak grip to strong grip to make the shot shapes more extreme ...
Can you please do a video on pre shot routine? Thanks and keep up the good work buddy!
Liked the forearm tip. I have a hard time getting the club to turn over. But focusing on the forearms just worked in the few practice shots I took.
I can do every shot shape. Just not sure what ones coming out.
Great advice Rick, planning to use it today. Hopefully It is as smooth as yours!!
This was great. Short, simple and very good tutorial all in all. This guy golfs!
great tip Rick! Could you do the same for irons & wedges? Those visuals really help!!

I tend to slice the driver. Do you recommend to go for a fade or draw to get rid of the slice?
Saved. Will be practicing this next range session

Wow Rick is spending a lot of time at St. Andrew's !!!!
I can't blame him. Its a special place!!!!🏌️♂️⛳
When aiming body you'll put your lead or back foot half an inch or an inch behind the other right?
Nice video Rick
Simple and clear.
Rick, can you talk about yours feet alignment vs your shoulder alignment. it seems feet are out to the right and shoulders are aimed more to the left.
Me: Watching a video how to fade or draw with your driver
Also me: Automatically drawing or fading the balls when trying to hit a straight shot
From what I know: you're always gonna hit a little draw/fade, the scale of this should ofcourse become smaller when you're trying to hit it straight but it will still occur. You probably have a "natural flight" so a draw or a fade

Where would you place the ball in your stance for both shots, or it a personal thing? (Back to fade, forward to draw or keep it the same)???
great video. I was trying to explain to someone how to draw the ball and this is much simpler.
Rick I have a Titleist TSI driver and I have it adjusted for a draw, but the course that I have been playing requires me to shape the ball. Should my driver be set a more neutral setting if I need to shape the ball with a adjustable driver?

Is the grip the same for each or do you open one more and close the other?

What golf ball tracking device are you using in video? What do you know about the Rapsodo MLM? Thanks in advance for your response!
If you have a perfectly straight, but narrow fairway, with a relatively significant side slope going down from right to left, would you try for a fade, so the ball wants to try to bounce up the slope? Or a draw where the ball might bounce farther towards the hole, but might go to far and end up off the fairway to the left?
Another concise and helpful lesson that can easily be practiced.
Another saved Rick Shiels video in my phone. I pull Rick's videos out on the range more often than I probably should 😆
Solid, simple and useful upload. Thanks. I struggle to fade it, so this might help.
The sound off that Ping G425 when you stripe it 😳😬. Great vid as always!
Thank you Rick for another helpful video, all of your videos have helped my golf game by a lot
Hey Rick will this technique be the same for a 3wood or maybe a hybrid?
Beautiful draw
Quality Rick, you know what your doing..
my fade and draw game is so good that i can make the ball start out straight and then go really really left or right :)
Great tips, Rick. Thanks. I really enjoy producing these shapes when needed during a round. Thanks for all your tip videos dude. Helps a ton. 🙏🏼
Hey Rick, since you switched to the odyssey big t blade putter, the prices of those have doubled on eBay, glad I got one before you made them popular
Thank you for sharing your tips. Excellent job ✌️, even for us beginners.
Do you move the ball forward at all for the fade and back a bit for the draw or no change in position.
its easier to draw with the ball back in the stance, easier to fade with it further forward
Great video. Thanks for all the tips!
Best explanation ever Rick - Nga mihi Chris
I love your content, bro. So helpful!
Brilliant video Mr Shiels going save this for when I'm next down the range as desperately need to be able to hit both shots on command as cant do it now just goes wherever it goes off club face 👍
My natural shot shape is straight. Might not be straight down the fairway but it does go straight. Is hitting the ball straight not good?
You should explain how the grip effects the flight of the ball too. Absolutely love your vlogs!
I like to keep it simple one grip two setups, I have fairly neutral to strong grip and I can hit both shots fade and draw pretty much how Ricks does it in his setup.
The video ive been NEEDING, Thanks Rick, Outstanding stuff... 🏌️♂️⛳️
Simple, great tips, Rick. Thank you. And for me (and other amateurs) if you're not sure how "lined up" you are, use alignment sticks on the range. Basic, but so helpful!
You make it look so easy
Great video Rick. I’m a 24 hc, should I be trying these shaping shots ? Or are they too difficult for me ?
I actually do some draws and fades but by accident not by design 😀
Just in time to watch this before the range 👌🏾 Thanks
I got a natural draw I'm learning now to hit the fade thanks Rick for these videos!! Give me a shout if you are ever in Greenville SC
Just this weekend, I discovered I can hit a massive, controllable fade, on-demand. I'm pretty sure this is going to become my go-to driver swing.
I'll have to work on the draw. I can't seem to get it to work with any consistency.
Thanks
But what’s about the most difficult shot? Just purely straight 😉?
Hey Rick, what’s the length on your driver shaft??
jokes on you I already fade my golf shot (even if I don’t want to) 🥲🥲🥲
jokes aside, thanks for the tips!
How about placement and set up on the tee box? For fade, set up on left, and for draw, set up on the right? (Generally)
Always up for a good tip, especially in this area.
I want that driver he’s using, that sound is beautiful.
Rick could you give a tip or two on how to hit more lower drivers. Because my drivers go so high into the air that the wind just carries the ball wayyy left or right. Great video Rick. I love how easy you make it look. Can't wait to hit the range in the morning and give it a go.
You should do a video reviewing some of the crazy swing tools out there. The laser pointer guide, the wrist guide, the impact mat, etc.
