      Hood clip is an easy fix.. I fixed my daughters for less than 1$.. drill a small hold thru the remainder of the base clip and interlink 2 washers with a zip tie.. just place the end of the prop rod into one of the zip tie circles and it holds fine. Hers has been like this for years.. 😊 I hate the cooling systems on these cars!! Grrr.

    Thanks Brian. My 2015 Nissan Altima had the very problem you demonstrated on this video. My mechanic told me to take it back to the auction where I bought it. I took it to the dealer and they told me that it will take a minimum of 6 hours to diagnose the problem. They will have to take out the dashboard. It’s going to cost me a couple of thousands to diagnose and fix. I didn’t have that so I took it back home. I watched your video and the problem was solved in less than 30 minutes. Thank you so very much.

      Aside from the corroded battery connector I haven't had any significant issues with my 2014 Xterra. I did break the fusible link assembly when trying to get the nut off so that I could replace the battery clamp - I did get the nut loose though. I replaced that clamp with a marine battery clamp but I had to slightly enlarge the mounting hole on the fusible link. Anyway, I did run into another issue when I went to replace the storage basket on the roof and found that the bolts were over tightened to where I broke some brass looking part, that the bolt screws in to, when trying to remove the bolt and that required that I drill out the bolts - not happy about that. Needless to say, I did not re-install the basket. I do have one of those "smart keys" that will open the car door but won't start the SUV (key goes into ignition but won't turn) - good think I have more than one key (and, by the way, another car to drive if this one fails).

    Thank you for this. I actually looked this up just to start my Mom’s Ford Focus and wanted to be sure I connected the jump cables correctly. Never did I imagine such an informative video and a guy that breaks it down in a way I understand too! Since choosing my 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5 or whatever, I’ve replaced 4-5 batteries due to corrosion, I’ve also had to by the “brain” of the car once because the battery corroded to the point it contacted connections to the brain and killed my car 🤦🏻‍♀️ that was expensive! Sorry ik very little in mechanic terminology however ik what sucks and replacing batteries about every two years sometimes more it seems flat out ridiculous, it’s costly, and can affect more than just the battery. Nissan should be forced to pay for every battery, car brain and service charge we owners acquire due to their bad planning. I do love my Nissan minus all the headaches but I’ll never buy one again! That and because it’s a foreign vehicle insurance is outrageous supposedly due to part costs

    Ordering the spare fuse box, and a new cable to replace the corroded one. I thought I was somehow being negligent in taking care of my car because there was always a ton of corrosion building up on the battery, , but now I know it's just a design flaw, and it's going to do this again. At least I know where to start. I hope I can get the grease at my local parts place or WalMart?
    Thanks again!

      So good to see your comment! The mechanics that’d fix and replace my Nissan 2012 batteries and the brain once would ridicule me for not maintaining the battery... I was but it doesn’t seem to prevent the massive corroding of my 5-6 batteries plus one time it was so bad it literally affected the brain of the car that Nissan so conveniently put next to the battery 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hate Nissan! I love my car except all the bs expenses and time and effort put in just to use it

      Vaseline works great for anti corrosion on battery terminals

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  11 лет назад +9

    GREAT QUESTION! My main concern is that the fuses are so close to the positive terminal. While this looks good on paper, it lends them to be VERY vulnerable to battery acid and subsequent corrosion. Mechanics and tow truck drivers see "no starts" very regularly from the positive side terminal tripling in size and turning blue, green, or white due to sulfuric acid. Fortunately you can cut off the end and replace it easy enough. However a configuration like this is harder to come by at a C-store.

    A fuse must be installed as close to the power source as possible. If it were moved away from the source and there was a short between the fuse and the battery, there would be no safety feature to prevent a fire or battery explosion. A little maintenance goes a long way. Engine bay cleaning and battery terminal protection grease would prevent this. I am on my sixth Altima, all over 200,000 miles and never had this issue.

    Copper has to be 100% clean for soldering to take place. Cleaning stranded copper is difficult to do. Flux core solder alone is not enough especially on stranded wire. Rosin flux added to the wire would have made the solder flow better in the copper strands. The extra flux lifts the impurities (oxidation, oil, dirt) off the strands. Flux also act as a wetting agent, reducing the surface tension of the liquid solder allowing the solder to flow (penetrate). All the impurities are suspended in the flux. After the joint cools, clean the flux residue with alcohol, flux can be corrosive if not removed. (I didn't read all the 318 comments to see if someone suggested this, delete or edit if redundant.)
    Dipping the stranded wire in alcohol or spraying a shot of carb cleaner is not enough to clean the inside strands.

    Definitely gotta give you credit on this one! 109 degrees outside and the '07 Sentra just said 'F' troop! Luckily, 777Towing got to me within 20 minutes so didn't have to suffer long. Broke out the umbrella and commenced tah sweating! The tow driver was baffled as to the possible cause; chiming, no dash lights, hazards work but no audible relay action (clicking). Get home and I actually look at this part (the fusible link) because it's right at the positive terminal as you mention, but it's so damn deceiving...I see four links that you can glance at and they are fine. What you don't see, and here's where the hat gets tipped off to ya, is the "other" hidden fusible link (ignition no doubt) that's under a nice plastic cover. Remove the positive cable, flip the assembly upside down and whoops there it is...Absolutely incredible. Found the 'missing link' thanks to you!

    Hey, I love my Nissan! My Xterra has been, by far, the most reliable vehicle I have owned. It takes all of the abuse I serve it and never misses a beat. I can't say the same for my Chevy that I have owned a month and has already broken down twice. Four years with my Xterra and it has never left me stranded once. One month with the Chevy and it's quit on me twice. By the way, my 2001 Xterra does not have that type of fuse set up, somebody at Nissan must have got stupid in more recent years.

    For some reason I found this one very entertaining, thank you.
    Inherent in the question is the gap between the young engineers who design these cars and those who fix them. I always felt that engineers need to work from the ground up, rubbing shoulders with those who make and fix their vehicles. Any mechanic would roll his eyes at the thought of a fuse box so close to corroding battery cables....

    Great video. I'm cranky, too.
    My 2011 Altima SL (4 cylinder) was having some problems, and it was clear that the battery had a poor connection to the car. The battery is full of corrosion, thanks to an absolutely stupid design by Nissan. I loosened the positive battery terminal nut, and the car-side terminal connector came apart in my hand.
    Sure, that connector is an $8 part...BUT...if the thing is so damn corroded that it may as well have been welded on, what's the freaking point? So I was off this morning (New Year's eve morning) to the stealership to but both the fusible connector and the positive connector piece. Here's the kicker - as I was waiting for them to bring my part, a service rep was telling somebody in the waiting room what was wrong with their Nissan. Guess what? "The positive terminal is so corroded that we'll need to replace the entire thing." I would have laughed if I weren't so pissed...them, too. Total for the parts plus tax? $40.
    Of course, I couldn't get the fusible link bolt off, either. PB Blasted it for 12+ hours or so and nothing. We ended up having to drill it out. Finally everything is back together and working fine.
    Great video and great advice - lots of dielectric grease and carry a spare in the car.

      Same thing is going on with my 2006 nissan maxima. The 120 amp fuse on the positive battery terminal has blown a handful of times now. I've replaced the alternator, pigtail, battery, battery clamp/connector. Finally now figuring out that there must be a short somewhere or something since the fuse blew twice in one day. However that's the least of my problems as the car started overheating. Oh and the engine was of course rebuilt 3 years ago when the plastic guide for the timing chain broke and inevitably the chain broke. And to make matters worse, every mechanic I've spoken to has given me a different opinion about what's wrong. But I'm STILL not ready to throw in the towel!

    PART IS CALLED A NISSAN "HOLDER-FUSIBLE LINK" My 2003 Murano has a Nissan Part #24380-79912 -you can Google that part number to see how it's referenced on Nissan Parts sites for your own Vehicle Model/Year

    being a tech myself and owning an 01 maxima i have very little good to say about the car either, but the battery issue is easily remedied by cleaning it and sealing it. my biggest problem is with the immobilizer problems they have, if only my problems were so small as the corrosion on a terminal. needless to say we are all guilty of not doing the preventative care we are supposed to. tons of stuff i should have done or should do i have neglected. but they usually do not leave me stuck. the ECM with the immobilizer crap is ridiculous. especially when you consider what they want to charge for the parts.

    The manufacture should have the car designed engineers remove parts that often need replacement themselves so they know the pain we all suffered out here. Talking about design... I love how Subaru now placed the oil filter right on top of the engine :).

    At the start when you got the car to start with the knife this is the moment i am referring to/ When the car was started, and was just ticking over you could hear the revs, increasing and decreasing, was that the mass flow intake malfunction? Or what would cause a car when in idle to change engine like that up and down up and down?

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 9 лет назад

      It was the car trying to find idle because power to the engine computer was interrupted and idle re-learn needs to be performed. A tedious procedure if you do not have a scan tool.

    Hi could this cause the abs light to come on as it came on just before I turned the engine off to restart but it nothing was happening it would not turn over no power at all to anything lights horns etc the previous owner had make like a make shift connection going from one bolt to the other which looked burnt out so I just joined the 2 connections with a fuse for now to see if it worked which it did the car turns over and starts but the abs light is still on would this solve the problem if when I change the whole fuse part

    This reminds me of when I had a 1979 chevette when I was 19 in 1980 . I bought it new and I learned one thing fast always carry a clutch cable and a pair of vise grips . On all of them that are 5 speed it breaks near the clutch pedal . It was under warranty and drove it there shifting with no clutch . The guy come out and said we replaced the cable and he knew my dad as he was a master mechanic so the guy gave me a cable and said you will need it . I keep bringing them back and swapped them.

      Hey Brian! My 2006 nissan maxima had this exact same fuse blow 5 times in 3 years. It was annoying the first 3 times but last week, it blew TWICE IN ONE DAY! Now I know there must be a short or something, right? Even if this IS a common problem with nissans, I imagine that blowing the same fuse twice in one day has got to be due to a larger issue. It's got a rebuilt engine (timing chain broke 3 years ago), new alternator, pigtail, new battery, new battery clamps/connectors (due to the same corrosion that everyone else talks about). Lots of new things. Oh and the alternator had to be replaced twice in two years. It's GOT to be a short, right? Or do you have any other leads? Thanks sooo much!

    MOST of them won't dis configure unless you remove just the positive and touch it to ground or remove both and touch them together. The best thing to do is just remove the negative cable only, or remove the battery completely and isolate the positive for a minute or so. By the way- that's not a "noob" question. Some cars are really fussy about being configured and require a certain procedure to configure- make sure to get that info before servicing a battery etc. These are rare.

  • @kd1s

    Actually it's not laziness - it's called bean counters. They'll drive everything down to a price and they KNOW you're gonna be replacing things more often. And it's gotten ever worse since Renault bough Nissan.
