Love the video-I was next going to start tracing all the power wires to see what the primary cause for loss of power was. Thanks
depends on what the rest of the shape it's in, it will need a new ignition assembly, so price that out and bleeding brakes really means something is wrong and needs fixing. air only gets in there with leaks.
For me it was the fuse ground screw for that battery.. follow the cable from the positive on the battery to the fuse box check for voltage at the end of the cable and make sure all your screws are tight checking fuse voltage didn't help me
My car also had no electricity at all, anywhere. Results that the battery terminals were loose, so was just to tighten them up and then it started immediately. 1998 RAV4 Toyota! ❤️
As a mobile mechanic, I can’t tell you how many times people have to pay me to tighten up their battery terminals. It’s the first thing I look at it when there’s a no start.
I am going to try this tomorrow, I have been extremely stressed over my 1995 ford ranger for years, about 2013 sadly it was right after I got my diagnoses and became permanently disabled and would need this vehicle more then ever. It would randomly die on me while driving or just not start, over the last 5+ years I have worked on the truck myself, replaced timing belt (which broke) I also replaced my valve would not toggling when needed and killing the truck randomly. Continuing to have issues I went after easy stuff, battery, terminals, I removed the alternator it was good, checked pulleys, and replaced the fan belt, I replaced the coil, spark plugs and wires as well, also I ran sea foam and cleaned of my throttle intake.. I took truck bed off replaced my fuel pump motor, and fuel filter. I check fuse's inside panel and engine fuse's and relays. I also found out or believe the (possibly) my fuel pump relay wire connection was bad because when I jimmy rigged ground wire into the relay terminal and grounded to the trucks frame BOOM my truck started up like it never had a problem that lasted for maybe 3 months then as of last OCT on Halloween (my birthday) that was that never started again been sitting in my drive way. Frustrated and disabled it's getting harder and harder to work on my truck myself and now on SSI I cannot pay anyone to tow it or work on it. Considered going to a pick and pull to snag a engine relay box and wire harness and just replace the entire thing. However out of the 30 years I have worked on my own cars I never done something like that on my own and worried I will do more damage. I watched your video and it gave me hope. My husband and I really got into a fight last night because I worked on my truck yesterday and after having it on a trickle charger it told me battery was full after only 2 hours I found strange since truck has SAT there for now 8 months but, it wanted to turn over but, I could tell it was too low to cold crank. My husband is angry with me because I cannot solve the problem and I am doing my best. I never considered the ignition switch itself and never that that would prevent ANY power from turning on lights / dash/ radio etc. I bought a new voltage meter cause I cannot find mine in the garage would that work for testing too? Any advice or help ANYONE can give me would be greatly appreciated I have have be seen for major surgery this month and am already very stressed out about that I just need this truck moving had a full tank of gas and am worried about the long term sitting damaging my fuel pump and fuel injection system. Thanks `Cat
on that old thing, merely unplugging thebattery resets everything. But a greenish tint wire may need replacing, that is corrosion and if you see it, wire is bad.
Hey Scotty, love the videos! I have a weird situation that I cant figure out for trying to get my car started. My car has absolutely no power anywhere, not the interior light, headlights, horn, nothing! My battery is fully charged at 12.7V, tried getting my car boosted as well with a truck and a battery pack and didn't have power anywhere. I checked my main fuses and from the battery it goes to an 80 amp fuse and then to a 40 amp fuse, then to the other fuses. I used my multimeter and verified that I have power (12.7V) on both sides of my 2 main fuses, and all other fuses are good. I was thinking it could be the ignition switch, but then again I dont need the ignition switch to have power to my interior light. My car is a 2005 Honda civic btw, any help or advice is well appreciated. Thanks.
@@rasheedlawrence Me too. Oh Don't tell Scotty . . . it's a Celica ('95). 8 | lol He just has that touch I totally lack. How about yours, did you find problem? I changed alternator & Fuse, - And Battery. So i get the 'credit' for causing it. i'll need to change several other fuses - Corrosion 'Growing', but now - All Dead. Some time warp or moon phase - i guess.
I have the same situation in my 09 malibu, any help would be great...it was driving just fine until one day i turned the key and nothing no power on dash, no headlights no nothing
ok, will try that soon. i was thinking if her ignition switch is bad, would the dashboard lights still come on? an if so do i have to make a new key for the switch? thanks again for all ur help an knowledge Mr kilmer
Its also a good idea because the slight resistance caused by having the current go through the engine / body can help to prevent your donor battery from Dumping its charge at high rate into the dead battery, and it could also help the dead car to start because the starter grounds to the engine anyway instead of having to pull a good 100 amps through the body of the vehicle, as well as what Scotty said.
Lol funny thing is im From saipan born and Raise for 12 years now im living in the U.s In texas.. and im watching scottys vids, it helps with my first car. lol
Dear Sir, you just made my day. I had someone put an alternator in my Rocky Daihatsu...long story short, the battery started smoking. Then the electrical system was completely dead, so I had it towed to a real mechanic (wish I had your video before I did this). I haven't heard back from them yet, though now I at least know I don't have to start searching for another vehicle to drive. I still don't get it - it drove fine for 13 miles, I unhooked the ground side of the battery for a while (old car, so it's the only way I know to reset the dashboard sensor lights), hooked it back on, it started smoking, then was completely dead. For the life of me I don't know what happened, I was going to tighten the nut holding the alternator cable on, it looked loose, but thought I had better not touch anything. What if the alternator-battery cable somehow came in touch with the frame of the vehicle?
Because a spark from touching the cable to the battery ground terminal can sometimes cause battery gases to explode. A spark can still happen when attaching the cable to a piece of bare metal on the car but it's less likely because it's further away from the battery.
Thanks for this informative video. I have a 2017 chevy malibu with push button start. It had power this morning but wouldn't start. There was a "stabilizer check" message on dashboard and engine won't crank. So I removed the 60 amp fuses, 3 of them, and then put them back on but now the car completely lost power (dashboard is black and car doesn't even crank). My battery is good and I have a portable handheld jump starter that I used to jump start it but to no avail. What do you think might be the issue?
Hi Scotty. Okay, we have a '95 Ford Windstar, and we've got a really strange electrical behavior from the vehicle. To make it short, it can be driving along and then all the electrical goes out, but the engine will continue to run. Though it won't run well, and seems to be compression firing which is the only thing keeping it going. It will rev and such, but eventually will just die. Alternator has been replaced and also tested good. Battery isn't very old, but has been drained a couple times.
Hey Scotty I have the same problem as in the video but none of the lights turn on from interior or the exterior I have check everywhere but I can't find where's the problem at I need your help
Hey Scotty, My 16’ chevy Cruze had some electrical problems some of the fuses under the hood don’t have power to them.. i tested them. Some light up when contacted and some don’t. I replaced all the mini fuses and still not getting power when checked.. 2 of the turn signals, brake light, horn, power outlets don’t work and engine worn turn on. No crank at all. Also windows won’t roll down from front driver side and passenger, but the rear windows work only on their doors. Won’t work from the master control. But dash lights up and front lights work. Any suggestive leads to take?
I wish I would have looked at your video scotty before I went to the Ford dealership. They have had my car for two fucking days and still cant figure out the electrical problem.
mmm nissan is better i guess but they still overcharge cause we couldn't figure out why our car couldn't use our trailer lights so we took it to the dealership and they popped a fuse in and charged us 120 dollars lol.
Hey Scotty, hope you can help. My truck doesn't have power anywhere, no interior lights nothing. The battery is strong but there is no power. I'm completely lost and don't want to pay for a tow truck.
trace power from the battery terminals, both positive and negative back to the car's wiring. When power is lost, that's the short. Could be as simple as a corroded battery terminal connection
Scotty Kilmer, my 99 mustang had no power or lights. Jump started it, drove it home, Replaced battery and it started right away. Moved the car to the street went back half hour later again no lights, clicks or anything! Please help! Thank you!
thanks man ur video just saved me a new battery. a wire was detached from the starter due to which i was not getting any cranking sound while starting engine. keep sharing and stay blessed.
that won't fix it if you have no power at all. You should check power from the battery positive terminal back, somewhere you will find the power is lost and that will be the problem. could easily just be a loose connection or blown fuse.
Well you might just have shorted something and fucked the electrical system up. Even if you dashlights come on there might be severe damage to other parts of the system.
Babar Ahmed your cars electrical system is fried. You done messed up really bad. most likely you shorted the ECM, battery , alternator , and starter. pray that it only affected that. and not EVERY sensor. because you will throw away a LARGE amount of money just replacing the ECM. I hope you learned your lesson.
Hi Scotty, my car had a little trouble starting in the morning and then wouldn't start at all later. I tried jumping it and I cleaned a bunch of corrosion of the battery, but still nothing. Sometimes I would get lights on the dashboard and sometimes not. Now I get nothing, not windows, power locks, horn, nothing at all. Could the ignition switch be the problem if the horn isn't working? You don't need the keys for that. Could it be a relay? I checked them all and one of them I couldn't get to close the switch no matter how I applied 12V to it, but I'm not sure I was doing it right because it had a strange wiring diagram on it even though it only had 4 connections. Could a relay cause this problem? I live in Senegal, so it is hard to find replacement parts and I want to be sure before trying to hunt it down in the markets. Your video was super helpful by the way, Thanks!
you fried something, so start at the main battery cable and use a test light to check for power loss going from the battery back to the fuse box and then back into the car for EVERY stinking wire there. Pray you find where power has been lost quickly , and that you didn't ruin the main computer
Thank u Scotty I brought my car to autozone. And I got surprised my battery was bad with just 2 years old, I bought anew one and now neon is back on the streets , thank u so much now give me some moonshine lol
@nismo2ful let's hope your friend didn't hook it up backwards first and burn wiring and fuses out. But if he didn't, many cars will pop small computer circuits when changing a battery if you're not careful. I've seen body control modules burn out that way, and they aren't cheap. so check all the wires and fuses first.
Thank you. Would that same scenario apply to an old 89 f250. Because I've got the same situation, plus no lights at all dome are otherwise. Please help from off the grid in AZ
I recently had problems with my Mazda protege hatchback not cranking. I replaced the 100A fuse and got a new battery and new connectors, problem solved!

Hi I have a 2004 pontiac grand am. Just bought a new battery last week. Nothing was left on when I got into the car no service light for the past few days & I get in & nothing doesn't crank at all. Checked the fusees they were okay. Would I need a new starter?
Hey scotty, currently having a similar promblem on an older gmc. Everything was fine a week ago now with new battery im not getting any electrical, no dash no door buzz. But when i hook the battery up for a jump to donor car everything seems to pop on but car still wont turn over. Any suggestions? My cable from battery to altenator is lookin a little questionable but could that cause full loss of power?
@granyagami1982 you would have to test it with a load tester, well beyond a diy repair. They can break down in insidious ways, just try a new one if you think it's bad.
Honda 1993 CX. Switched out battery to see if it would make a difference with a bad main relay under the dash. It would crank but not start. Had to wait - crank - wait - crank . Had it happen once before and it started. Anyway the car went dead. No lights on the dashboard. It was an 80 amp fuse that broke. Bought another but the top is too wide and won't seat. I'm going to the Honda dealer in 8 hours to buy new fuses of every value. Hope a Honda fuse is a little narrower. Thanks.
of course check the switch, but generally no power with the door open is something else causing power loss like bad wiring from the battery to the wiring of the car.
@scotty Kilmer I have a 2003 ford f250 that was driving then suddenly shut off. Then there's no power whatsoever. No dash lights, power windows, power locks, interior lights, radio nothing. Like a dead battery but when we tried to jump nothing. Do you think an ignition switch is the culprit for this too or a bad ground. All fuses and stuff were good too
just google power probe 2 or 3. battery testers though, good ones, cost a LOT, mine is 800 bucks. Best to just get em tested free at placed like auto zone
How so you find a good mechanic to check it like that. Will a dealership do this or just recommend a new battery. Have a 2020 Ford Fusion, and no electrical at all. Was starting fine up until today.
Hi my car is just like that right now, the other day I had to jump started and was good for like a week, and after the car is dead again, battery and alternator is good too, but i was testing the fuse box with a fuse tester and none of the fuses light up, do you know what can It be? Thank you 🙏
@jdmjtag If it does eventually start, then the starter is bad. But find an auto zone or other store near you, they check batterys and alternators free. If they test good, replace the starter. Scotty
Do the more modern cars like this one still use the old-school fuse-able links like my old Pontiac had? I had that burn out on me one day and I got the same condition. Just about the easiest electrical fix I've ever encountered.
I lost my car keys and had to pay automotive locksmith 280.00 before he'd make a new ignition key for me. Now there's no power to my car locksmith said this is not his fault and left me my car with no power¡
Hi Scotty. I'm facing an issue with my Mitsubishi Galant 2011. After replacing the key fob battery (which was not working) the car won't start. The key fob works properly (locks/opens the doors and the trunk) but the car won't start. I really appreciate any help.
Nice scotty, used your videos for reference, tested starter, alternator, ignition switch, fuses, batterys. Still nothing, had it towed to the dealership where they determined it was the cpu and wiring.
Hello Scotty, I have a 1970 mustang that I have restored from the ground up, but I am having wiring issues. The wiring harness (and almost everything else in the car) is brand new. Just as an example, when I put the key in the ACC pos, the reverse lights power on and stay illuminated, the headlights don't turn on, and when the turn signal is switched on, the radio turns off. These are a few examples that come to mind, do you have a suggustion of what the issue may be? Thank you.
Hi Scottie I have an 03 expedition that's doin exactly that and I've checked everything except the ignition switch would I have to remove the entire steering wheel
Hi there Scotty Kilmer, my 77 oldsmobile cutlass died twice on me before, good battery 12.6V but the power cable on the alternator only reads 3V instead of 12.6V. To get it back on I would have to wiggle the cable until the alarm came on. The car 's positive cable goes straight to the starter solenoid, then to the Junction Box, and finally to the alternator. The junction box read 3V as well. Could a starter solenoid really cause the whole car to be dead? If so what would it be? Corrosion on the connections? Loose connection? Failing solenoid?
Hey Scotty, I just got a 1999 Mercury Tracer last Wednesday and this morning it wouldn't crank and was making an odd knocking/ticking noise from the front right fender area. The overhead cabin light pulses on and off and BARELY lights up. Could it be just a bad battery or could it be the alternator?
hey scotty my truck is having this same issue the battery is charged and even the headlights turn on but the power locks don't work and of course like in the video when i turn the key nothing happens not on the dash or anything. I don't have one of thoes cool testers like you have so any suggestions of what to do? Do you think it's the ignition switch?
hello ....I have a 2008 PT cruiser and my Windows come up and down but my car doesn't start and also the dash lights doesn't appear. Had fuse box replaced still same thing. New battery also. could I be having the same issue as in the video ?
technically hydrogen gas can be there and a spark can cause an explosion. I've never seen it myself, and I've been working on em 45 years, but I've heard of it happening.
Hey Scotty, I’m working on a 2003 Lexus es300 and when I turn the key to on I have no instrument panel lights and the windows, radio, heater, wipers don’t work. All fuses are good.
Hey scotty i have an 06 impala i just replaced the ignition switch because i had all the symptoms of this. But that was not the cause, i have basic mechanic skills ( change oil check fluids and can change out external parts) but no electrical skill. Is my next step a mechanic or since it is such an old car time to buy a new one. i only expected to have this car for at most 6mo to 1.5 years before getting a new one, since it is only valued now around $1000, and a huge mechanic bill seems economically unfesable.
sounds like more than one problem. first do my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" to find why it doesn't start. Often a bad main power relay in those though
@roorsalt Batteries have the ability to release a combustible gas. Completing the circuit between the car and the jump start battery has the ability to cause a spark. If it sparks to the engine, the chances of it igniting the gas are less. If you touch it to the negative terminal of the "dead" battery, the spark could cause it to ignite the gas causing an explosion.

Thanks `Cat
5 years now, hows life?
replace the battery cables if it jump starts but your battery doesn't work. They can wear out on the inside, but jump on the outside
bro this video really help me fix my car and i didnt know anything about cars @ScottyKilmer
on that old thing, merely unplugging thebattery resets everything.
Thanks.
you've lost power somewhere, start tracing it further from the battery to the switch to the main computer. Somewhere there will be a short.
Lyle Windhorst hey did you ever figure this out? I’m having the same issue with my honda civic too. Thank you
@@rasheedlawrence Me too.
A fully charged battery in good condition should read 13.5-14.5 volts. I'd suggest replacing the battery and checking the charging system.
Lol funny thing is im From saipan born and Raise for 12 years now im living in the U.s In texas.. and im watching scottys vids, it helps with my first car. lol
@gmcarfreak could be lots of things, check the neutral switch on the clutch pedal first, then either the switch or the wiring is bad.
What if the alternator-battery cable somehow came in touch with the frame of the vehicle?
why don't you put the negative on the battery
Because if you put the negative terminal of the dead battery it will finish causing a explosion

What do you think might be the issue?
good vid
Thanks for the informative video. I've got a dead car outside and don't know where to start!
I charge 65 dollars for a general check up and hook up of my high level scan computer. I work m-f
Do you travel
Guadalupe Chavez im having the same problem:/ did you ever get to find out what was the cause of the problem in your situation?
My car having the same problem right now, I have a very loose battery terminal so hopefully that's the problem
Me too, ever figure it out?
it has to be the distributor, may one the connectors are loose or has disconnected
Megafuse-fusable link bad connection.
Hey Scotty,
My 16’ chevy Cruze had some electrical problems some of the fuses under the hood don’t have power to them.. i tested them.
They have had my car
for two fucking days and still cant figure out the electrical problem.
mmm nissan is better i guess but they still overcharge cause we couldn't figure out why our car couldn't use our trailer lights so we took it to the dealership and they popped a fuse in and charged us 120 dollars lol.
I have a 78 Chevy blazer I have powered everything except inside the cab to start does that work on older vehicles to for the ignition?
Hey Scotty, hope you can help. My truck doesn't have power anywhere, no interior lights nothing. The battery is strong but there is no power. I'm completely lost and don't want to pay for a tow truck.
trace power from the battery terminals, both positive and negative back to the car's wiring. When power is lost, that's the short. Could be as simple as a corroded battery terminal connection
Will do, quick answer, I appreciate it.
robert rukidding he was right. My terminals looked fine but I ended up needing a new one. This guy is good.
Scotty Kilmer, my 99 mustang had no power or lights. Jump started it, drove it home, Replaced battery and it started right away. Moved the car to the street went back half hour later again no lights, clicks or anything! Please help! Thank you!
Can I use a voltage tester? Or does it have to be a power probe? Thanks
@macluis925 swapping engines is insane when changing engine years and design. Only a real pro should attempt it. Scotty

thanks man ur video just saved me a new battery. a wire was detached from the starter due to which i was not getting any cranking sound while starting engine. keep sharing and stay blessed.
I'm waiting for the video where you say "I'm going to show how to take care of a car that won't start!" the next frame the car is in the crusher! lol
that won't fix it if you have no power at all. You should check power from the battery positive terminal back, somewhere you will find the power is lost and that will be the problem. could easily just be a loose connection or blown fuse.
my car battery was dead and i got a new 1 but i connected it wrong by mistake and now it wont crank or start
help me please. toyota yaris 2001
i have dash lights but no crank or start
Well you might just have shorted something and fucked the electrical system up. Even if you dashlights come on there might be severe damage to other parts of the system.
Babar Ahmed your cars electrical system is fried. You done messed up really bad. most likely you shorted the ECM, battery , alternator , and starter. pray that it only affected that. and not EVERY sensor. because you will throw away a LARGE amount of money just replacing the ECM. I hope you learned your lesson.
Buy a new car bro..Sorry for that.
Does the switch part detach from the key cylinder portion or is it a single part ? 2013 Ford Edge SEL
Wow! Simple and straight to the point. You sir are a RUclips artist!
Thank you. Would that same scenario apply to an old 89 f250. Because I've got the same situation, plus no lights at all dome are otherwise. Please help from off the grid in AZ
Were the headlights and dome lights working on this car?
Picked one of these up on amazon, tired of replacing parts hoping it will take care of the problem
I recently had problems with my Mazda protege hatchback not cranking. I replaced the 100A fuse and got a new battery and new connectors, problem solved!
yes, it can do that, of course the temp gauge would peg then too.If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. Can you solve this same problem with a multimeter?
Is your power probe long enough to test under the dash from the battery? Or is there another place to attach. I'm trying to use a circuit tester
Have a 2009 dodge journey that is doing same thing has relays and battery tested all good do you think it the starter?
Best to just get em tested free at placed like auto zone
was there any power at all? Like to the door lights when you open the door? etc etc?
Would this problem also cause all other electrical units to not work such as dome lights
Thank you 🙏
yes, that or a wiring short somewhere
Does the remote lock and unlock work if the ignition switch is broken like this?
@jdmjtag If it does eventually start, then the starter is bad. But find an auto zone or other store near you, they check batterys and alternators free. If they test good, replace the starter. Scotty
often the wiring from the alternator to the wiring harness goes bad on those, check for wiring harness corrosion there.
Do the more modern cars like this one still use the old-school fuse-able links like my old Pontiac had? I had that burn out on me one day and I got the same condition. Just about the easiest electrical fix I've ever encountered.
I would start by changing the ignition switch out and check all those wires first
I lost my car keys and had to pay automotive locksmith 280.00 before he'd make a new ignition key for me. Now there's no power to my car locksmith said this is not his fault and left me my car with no power¡
Ps > my car started, or it turned right over before the locksmith put in a new ignition key
sure, check the power coming off the ignition switch, if no power goes to those accessories when switch is on, replace it
Hi Scotty. I'm facing an issue with my Mitsubishi Galant 2011. After replacing the key fob battery (which was not working) the car won't start. The key fob works properly (locks/opens the doors and the trunk) but the car won't start. I really appreciate any help.
Would that be the same thing on a 1990 ford Taurus sho ? Thank
Would this include headlights too? Because I have no power to anything
Hey Scotty I have a major issue with my truck like that but it's a 91 s10 blazer v6 4.3 l battery good and fuses all seem to look good none are burnt
sounds like more than one problem. first do my video "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" to find why it doesn't start. Often a bad main power relay in those though
@gmcarfreak sometimes they do , sometimes they don't, just depends on how they broke. a new switch comes with anew key anyway
