In a 9 year run from 1980 to 1989, Larry Bird got 67% of all MVP votes that were cast. All other players combined only received 33% of the votes. I find it interesting after watching several different reaction videos by fans of either Jordan or Lebron, that the younger generation for the most part says Bird isn't even in their top 10. Yet when Jordan and Lebron were asked who was in their top 3 both named Bird in theirs.

I'm an old man now. I saw most of these games live on tv. There is something most people don't consider when they talk about Larry Bird being slow. They assume that just because he's not moving the fastest on the court, that he really is slow.
First thing. Bird ran all the time. I've never seen a player with more endurance than Bird. Visiting teams would come to Boston and practice on their court before a game, and Bird would be running up in the nose bleeds, in an unairconditioned arena, where the temperature was 90 on the court, and 110-120 where Bird would be running the stairs all the way up top. That endurance meant Bird played both defense and offense. People think Bird didn't play defense. Bullshit. Bird was selected to the All Defensive 3 times. He led the League in defensive win shares four times. Only about five or six players have more, and only Hakeem is tied with him. In most games, halfway through the third quarter Bird was the fastest guy on the court. Which leads me to my next point.
Second thing. Bird had a very quick first step, and a third gear he didn't show until late in a game. Bird was much faster than most people realize, and I've watched him chase down players and stop fast breaks.
Finally, my third thing. People think that just because Bird wasn't running flat out all the time that he couldn't. It never crosses their mind that the reason Bird knew where everyone was at all times is he played just fast enough to take it all in, understand exactly what everyone was doing on the court, and then implement the precise play that was going to embarrass his opponents the most, including everyone on the opposing roster, just by dominating whoever got in front of him.
Larry wasn't slow. No one, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, EVER, thought the game quicker than Larry did.
That makes Larry the fastest player ever in NBA history.

@@Speenzoidotron, Correct. One thing most people don't understand is that athleticism and speed can be detrimental when employed without regard to intellect.
The ability of a professional athlete to take in the information presented during the course of active play and implement the best strategy to score is far more important than athleticism and speed.
It's why, during Larry's era, he could dominate superior athletes. It's why Jokic does it in this era.

If you compare their career averages They are almost identical in points per game, rebound and assist. Birds edge is shooting his shooting % are way higher than Bron. Bird also gets the edge in clutchness!
Bird is the only player to average 24 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for a career. Yes you read that correctly!

Many often forget the three-point shot did not exist until 1979, so Bird didn't grow up training with it or using it. That always impressed me that he played to the level he did. I like what you said about when talking about the greatest players = it can come down to a personal preference. Bird had an immediate and huge impact on the NBA. Bird went to a 29 win team and with a new coach and 1 player change ( ML Carr) was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround. Bird won ROY and was 4th in MVP. For the next 8 seasons ( before the heel surgeries and back issues) for the MVP Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again. Bird in this 9 year stretch finished ahead of Magic 8 times. Bird created the 50-40-90 shooting club, did it 2 seasons in a row and was so close in 85 and 86 that Bird actually averaged 50-40-90 shooting over 4 consecutive seasons and his per game during this 4 years time was 28.1 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists. Please watch "greatest passer ever with re-edit" to see Bird as a phenomenal passer. IMO I have Bird higher than Magic because Bird was a better shooter, scorer, rebounder and defender. And Bird had supreme court vision and was the best passer as a forward the NBA had seen. All due respect to Magic and LA, but Kareem was the MVP in 1980, was voted the FMVP in the 80 Finals AFTER Magic's great game 6, but because Kareem was not present, the voters were asked to change their votes so Magic would win the award = see "Kareem" pages 140-141. LA also had a much easier path to the Finals as the East was a much stronger conference.

I feel the same about so many other aspects of his game- e.g, ball control/movement/finesse, and a smoothness in ball handling that, for me, outdoes Magic's in some ways. I think maybe what people think of as athleticism may be limited to things like running super fast and jumping super high, and flash in general. Isn't there a kind of athleticism in economy of motion, and in knowing exactly what's required to accomplish an athletic goal and doing exactly that-- nothing more and nothing less?

I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. Bird is top three all-time with Jordan and LeBron, but Bird is the best small forward of all-time. Hands down.
"If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley
“I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.”
-James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury
" The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy
“Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan
Only one man dominated Jordan. His name was Larry Joe Bird. Bird even dominated Jordan after Bird’s back problems got worse in 1989.

I don't understand why everyone says Bird wasn't athletic. The man was able to make his body do everything he wanted it to do, and combined with his great hand-eye coordination, I would say he was quite athletic. There's more to being athletic than being able to jump or look like a bodybuilder. The man had great muscle coordination. If he hadn't, he wouldn't have been able to do half the things he did.

    A couple of things:
1)Bird had to sneak away from the doctors at the Pacers game
2)There was no game scheduled the night of Bird's retirement. That crowd was there solely to see him off.

The best compliment came from Michael Cooper Coop said when Jordan passed the ball he stood there, when Dr Jpassed the ball he stood there. When Larry passed the ball, That's when he became most dangerous because hes gonna set a pick. Get the rebound, get the ball back or make the shot. Larry Bird never stopped playing. Thats why Larry ranks higher than you have him.🐐 of the 80's that's how you rank goats the era they played. You can't compare era's. Jordan himself said that, how can you say I'm better than someone i didn't play against.

You didn’t have to leave Bird open, he would score with people all over him. He could do that high arch, one footed, off balance and unexpected shot that would go in. I really think if Larry hadn’t had back issues, there would have been more championships. It is what it is. Great reaction. I’m still voting Bird as the goat. Just my opinion.

Great commentary from you! That RED-hot shooting performance you were asking about vs. Atlanta was when Bird went for 60 points. Almost as though he was bored and needed a challenge, about a week prior to Bird's record performance, teammate Kevin McHale had just set a Celtics record for the most points in a game with 56 points. Bird said to McHale that he should have continued to add more points, because you (McHale) never known when your record will fall. Then Bird went off about a week later with his 60 points. Larry was just a baaaaaaaad dude.

People just don't understand how good he was with both hands. Not just shooting. It looks like players weren't playing defense but it's not because they weren't playing defense. They simply had no idea what he was going to do. There is no player in history who compares with Bird on that level. Since nobody knew what he was going to do, he could basically do anything he wanted. It wasn't just because he could make a good pass at any time, the pass was probably going to be a bucket. It's like players were having to defend 5 different shots at the same time.

There's a video here on RUclips where Larry explains his shooting technique. He makes one shot, then says "But if I just do this", actively trying to miss, *AND THE GOOFY SHOT STILL GOES IN* which leads Larry to quip "Well, it's me..."

The fact Larry could do all he did with his lack of verticality and speed, all the injuries, bad back, two achillies surgeries, broken face, broken disfigured finger and so on makes it even more amazing - too many people are hung up on poster dunks far as who they think is great, but dunks are really just showoff stuff - when it comes to winning the game ill take a well placed three pointer over a two point poster dunk any day. Larry made up for his deficiencies in other ways like getting into peoples heads and getting them off their game - but Larry was also an unselfish player and cared more about getting the W with teamwork than playing the look at me game. Finally consider he did all he did in only 13 years with seven of those played with a very bad back and even wearing a back brace, you will not see that kind of dedication today.

Mr. Larry Legend inspired me to shovel snow off the Indiana snow covered courts just so I could practice.
When I was a child, I couldn't wait to get out of boring catholic church to watch the game. and then shovel snow so I could spend the rest of my day practicing.
My favorite memory in my lifetime is when I was in 5th grade. We were in the championship game. Were down by two points and I had just gotten fouled with 3 seconds left.
15 feet is far for an 11-year-old, but I drained then both.
    We won!
This memory would not have been possible if I were not inspired by Mr. Larry Joe Bird.

When Bird fell and broke his cheek, he came back in the game and was playing with double vision. Folks say Bird was un-athletic and slow but never make a baseline comparison. He can jump, catch, twist, and shoot in a fluid motion. He was always where he was needed when he needed to be. He would board against the best centers.
