One of the best follow ups to the 3 point contest is the year following Bird's 3 straight wins, he wasn't there due to injury. Craig Hodges, who had finished 2nd to Bird twice previously won it. Of course they went straight to Bird and told him, Bird responded "Yeah, I know where, at the end of the Bulls bench." Savage lol

The heart of Bird is him saying what it is all about...telling someone what he's going to do then doing it. That was the most real moment. That is what made Larry tick. That is deep-ceded to his youth and playing with all of those hotel workers.
Sometimes when Larry would fake a shot and the defender jumped and kind of sailed on by...Larry would say to the guy, "Welcome to the parachute club!" -- THEN he would take his shot, which almost always ended in a basket. He was a fierce competitor but he made people laugh. Even after retirement he told a lot of great jokes, and inspired people to tell their own jokes about their playing days. That's really an underrated ability. Not many egos can do that.
As was Magic Johnson, his rookie year for the championship game, the Lakers had a large number of injuries, Johnson played every position. Won a ring his rookie year. Jordan took 7 seasons to win his first.
If Bird played in todays soft, cupcake league with all the lax rules and all these no IQ, one-and-done guys..... he'd win multiple MVP's and world titles. Jordan may be the only player who didn't fear Larry, but he told his guys, even at the end of Larry's career, do not talk at Bird. Period! Pat Riley said, it wasn't just the players who were afraid of Larry, the coaches were too!
You mention his swag, when he played the three point contest with his warm up jacket on. Later, after his playing days were over, he was in a suit and walked thru the Pacers' practice facility and a ball came down his way. He picked it up and shot a three pointer from downtown and just kept on walking. He was in the front office at that time. Stunned the whole team. Good reaction. Thanks for sharing. I had to come back to add, Jordan never beat Bird when it counted, if ever.
Here's something people don't realize, Larry was left-handed. Watch any video of Larry signing a contract or autograph, he is left handed, you write with your dominate hand. he trained himself to shoot right-handed. Now imagine defending against a shooter who can instantly switch shooting hands. When you watch a full game of Bird, you will notice how many times he makes a left-handed pass or a close in shot. I never saw him shoot a left-handed 3 but Dominique Wilkins said Bird made left-handed 3 point shots in his 60 point against Atlanta. Imagine how many hours it takes to get better shooting with your off hand than most people can do with their dominate hand.
This is my favorite reaction to Bird's trash talk for this simple reason: "He put the work in." No other reactor came to that conclusion. He recognized that his greatness (and confidence in his skills) was achieved through thousands of hours of work on his craft.
MJ had a rule in the bulls locker room. No one talks to Bird, at all. MJ knew that Bird has another gear that only a few people in history had. Bird would try and goad other players to make him turn it on. You just couldnt respond to Bird - at all.
I do know Dennis Johnson was Birds favorite teammate because Johnson played the game just like Bird. They had a connection that was almost unreal!! Like two players with the same brain. When it came down to it they had that connection that won ball games
No Larry was never a gambler. I was a freshman in College at Indiana State University and followed his entire career. He was a home body. Mowed his own lawn.

Good to see you recognize the difference in skill vs athleticism, today's players rely heavily on athleticism many of them could work on their skills and be even better players. Similar to baseball most pitchers now rely on velocity, throwing the ball by the hitter but most of them have no idea how to pitch.

Bird was just a rare cat when it came to the combination of talking sh-t/keeping his composure during the most critical times/hitting clutch shot after clutch shot.
It’s great to see you stopping the video to comment! This reaction is so much better now that we can hear what you have to say. As others have mentioned, A Courtship of Rivals is a must watch. A lot of reactors break it down into 3-4 parts to make it easier to do😊
One thing to remember is that Michael and the Bulls never beat a Larry Bird Celtics team in the playoffs. Ali once said "It ain't bragging if you can back it up" and Larry backed it up. I think one reason he was so great is he grew up in Indiana which is basketball country. There you are born with a basketball in your crib.
And you know, if it wasnt for all those greats telling those stories themselves almost nobody would believe them because some are literally very hard to believe - but youre hearing them from the greatest players of the era, I cant imagine having the kind of career success Larry Bird did - retiring after all that has to be a high like no other
I would like to suggest that you react to “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals”. To me, it is the best video I’ve ever seen posted to RUclips and one of the best documentary films ever.
To me the most important players are Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. Bird and Magic saved the league from going under and Jordan kept it going.
He gambled on the court only. In life, Larry knew the importance of saving his money. If he did gamble, Larry would leave the game before he went into the hole. That was in his college days. I do know he saved his money. He would not throw it away.
They say Larry grew up playing in the street with black guys, waiters, wate collectors, ... he says they would be waiting for him to play, and that's where he picked all that ... brotherly ways I would say.
Oh no, Larry was very careful about his money. He never gambled it away, because he knew that he wanted to have enough money for retirement. That and he grew up dirt poor.
"Larry can't run or jump cause that was God's way of making things fair."
- Sir Charles Barkley.
Larry Bird was the best small forward of all time.

And you know, if it wasnt for all those greats telling those stories themselves almost nobody would believe them because some are literally very hard to believe - but youre hearing them from the greatest players of the era, I cant imagine having the kind of career success Larry Bird did - retiring after all that has to be a high like no other
Bird had to be DOUBLED all the time!
A shooter with the best accuracy. The more pressure that was put on him made him perform better. pistol, Pete had a great handle check about someday.
The word you're looking for is "reverence".
That's what players had for Bird and Jordan.
Bird taught the nba to trash talk, facts are facts.
The McDonald's commercial with bird and Jordan
MJ admits that Bird taught him how to trash talk
Spot on BNH...if you put the work in they are better...they will talk if they want
That's a great man 💯
He gambled on the court only.
Birdman wrote with his Left hand.
Oh no, Larry was very careful about his money. He never gambled it away, because he knew that he wanted to have enough money for retirement. That and he grew up dirt poor.
19:56 , Larry is too cheap to gamble. Sir Charles on the other hand....
Great reaction. Check out 15 minutes of facts about Larry Bird. Also, the Bird is the word highlights video. It's shows his whole skill set.
B I don't mind you bringing up MJ 2 goats 🐐🐐💯
Jordan said he learned how to trash talk and get into other players heads from Larry.
OMG Larry. LOL
Great vid.
It was said best: Larry Bird was playing chess and everyone else was playing checkers
