      The myth about Bird not being able to jump or dunk is just a stereotype about white players. Bird had a 28 inch vertical, which is the same as Karl Malone, and the league average, yet no one ever said The Mailman couldn't dunk. There's virtually no one who ever played in the NBA who couldn't dunk, including 5'3" Mugsy Bogues.

I was really too young to appreciate it then but as I've gotten older it becomes clearer and clearer what a special time it was. You always expected Bird was going to hit the game winner when it came down to crunch time because more often than not, he did. They call him a legend because he was really that good. Larry is my GOAT and it's really nice to watch the youngsters discover his talent.

  • @YesMyTatsAreReal

    I had the good fortune of getting to see Larry's career as it happened. Too many people get caught up in style over substance. Remember, style counts for exactly zero points on the scoreboard. Larry wasn't athletic by NBA standards at all, but he had a career stat line of 24-10-6 and if he wanted could’ve easily had 4 more assists per game to have a triple-double career average. Imagine that. He also won 3 straight MVP awards (1984 - 86) at a time in the league's history when there were the Showtime Lakers with Magic, Kareem and Worthy, the 76ers with Dr. J, Moses and Barkley, the Bad Boys in Detroit with Isaiah and Laimbeer, and a great, young player named in Chicago named Michael with Scottie Pippen arriving soon. Larry is also the founding member of the 50-40-90 club and he won the first 3 three point contests (1986-88) which were the only ones he competed in. In addition to all of that he is unquestionably one of the most clutch shooters in NBA history. Yes, Larry was THAT good and he made everyone who played with him better. Charles Barkley once said, "Larry Bird can’t run or jump because that was God’s way of keeping things fair." Maybe he was right because a player with Larry's basketball IQ and mastery of fundamentals in an athletic body of someone like Dominique Wilkins would just be crazy.

    Bird was 6’9” and his athleticism is way underrated. He had same vertical as Karl Malone and of course he’s not the fastest or quickest on the court but that doesn’t meant he’s a sloth and he somehow still won 3 straight MVP’s (only Wilt and Bill Russell have done that…not Jordan or LeBron) and he was 2nd team all defense 3x. He avg 24.3 pts, 10 reb, 6.3 assists, and 1.7 steals a game while being guarded by some of best most athletic defense players (Jordan, Pippen, Dominique, Clyde, Rodman, Cooper, Worthy, etc). Bottom line is the younger generations who never saw him play have the same mind set that nba players had when he entered the league: He’s white so he can’t be THAT good.

    Great reaction. Bird was the first member of the 50-40-90 club (he did it twice). The first big who could shoot outside, so without him, there likely wouldn't be a Dirk. He won the MVP 3 years in a row -- after coming in 2nd the 3 years before that. He won the first three 3-point shooting contests. Then after his playing days were over, he was pressured into becoming coach for the Indiana Pacers (where he coached Reggie Miller) and he won Coach of the Year. When he left that job he became an executive with the Pacers and won Executive of the Year. The only person to win MVP, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year. But look at some of the other videos. This is a good beginning but there's so much more.

    Not only is he one of only three guys to win MVP three years straight (along with Bill and Wilt) but he was either #1 or #2 in the MVP voting EIGHT years straight. THAT is dominance of a decade folks.

    I can’t recommend these three videos enough and are on YT:
    Bird/Magic documentary
    Bird ESPN Sports Century Documentary
    Dream Team Documentary
    All three are excellent. Growing up in the 80’s was an amazing time to be an NBA fan.

    I was a teenager n watched the Bird/Magic rivalry since their college days. By far those 2 were the best rivalry in sports. Ana, if you didn't get to watch Larry in his early years you'd never know he could dunk. Once he hurt his back the dunking was over.

    To enjoy today’s game, you have to appreciate those who brought the game to today’s level and popularity. There were many greats before Bird and Magic, but these guys saved the NBA. Jordan followed them and elevated the game to a level previously unseen and probably unmatchable for a long time to come. Today’s stars and those who follow truly have these three to thank.

Larry was an amazing player especially since he was not built like an athelete as most of the brothers are, He played with a bad back, achilles tendon problems and a badly broken finger he got years before in a softball game. Now if you want to see Larry and the Celtics most amazing passing game check out the video: ("86 Celtics tribute, The Beautiful Game") The passing is so fast and creative you'll almost think youre watching the Harlem Globetrotters--lol

    Larry is the prototype for Luka and Joker, but also has god-tier basketball IQ, passing ability that challenged Magic’s supremacy, and shooting ability that is a match to Stephen Curry (Bird had to deal with much more aggressive defenders than Stephen, and he is the founder and two time member of the 50/40/90 club). Larry is a top 5 of all time talent.

    the only thing Larry Bird lacked was an athletically gifted body.. if he was athletic like Jordan or lebron, he would be the BEST EVER.. Jordan is the best, but at their prime, Bird was a scary monster, and if bird could run and jump like MJ, with his shot and IQ.. it would have been OVER..

    • @msw8966
      @msw8966 3 года назад

      Jordan is Jordan tho and you can never count him out. He's a real winner like Bird so it's a tossup.

    • @soramirez5473
      @soramirez5473 3 года назад

      @@msw8966 i would say i respect your opinion.. but bird is a better shooter and passer and rebounder than Jordan WITHOUT the physical gifts.. so yea, if bird could jump as high as MJ, he would be the better player.. but likewise, if MJ had Birds IQ (probably the player smarter than Jordan) and court vision, he would be even more unstoppable.. for as great as jordan is, he is still not GOD..

    Of course he got injured, didnt you see him smack his skull on the floor-??!! Then he came back out at the end with a fractured cheekbone and a concussion but still racked up points and saved the game after the pistons were taking it over in his absence. LEGEND.
