The people saying Jordan never best Bird in the NBA playoffs is lacking context. First of all Jordan was averaging more points and playing better defense than Bird in all of the series they played each other including the regular season and this was young upcoming Jordan vs an already prime Bird. Secondly, Jordan had a trash team. What do you think would happen if we swap McHale and Parish for David Corzine and Charles Oakley? That's right Bird wouldnt win a series either against Jordan if the teams were swapped. When Jordan had a good to decent team he beat Bird this is fact when a Jordan lead 84 Olympic team went undefeated vs NBA Alls Stars led by Bird. Look I'm not diminishing Bird I have him better than Lebron cause i happen to think his prime and mental was better although he lacked the defense and longevity his shooting and clutches makes up for that for me.
Back to Jordan and Bird. Bird was a beast no doubt but the man himself admitted Jordan was better than him and everybody else that played in his era and that came from Birds own mouth.

Bro, THANK YOU!! I wasn't going to reply to everyone that wanted to just state that part like I'm missing context, meanwhile they are ignoring a ton of context themselves to take that statement and then argue that that automatically puts larry over Jordan. everyone saying yeah Bird was called Jesus and Mike stole his name, Jordan was 0-6 vs larry in the playoffs, yet none of them want to acknowledge that Jordan was so good Bird himself called him "God disguised as Michael Jordan" if context matters, bring all of it

You know what scratch that You can have Parish just give Jordan McHale. jI've forgotten how good McHale was. I just re-watched 87 Celtics / Pistons series and Mchale was just unstopabble in the post. Just give Jordan 87 McHale and I'm sure those two in a Bulls uniform could compete and beat any squad in the 80s and probably win multiple Championships if they have a few key pieces together.

MJ was the most explosive offensive scorer in the NBA that I've ever seen (I'm 60). But if there was an all time draft and every player was 20 I'd take Larry Bird first without hesitation bc he'd get every player involved from the very get go. His rookie year will attest to that. Nice reaction btw.

Jordan never could beat Bird... 0-6 in the playoffs. Just saying... If Bird stayed active past 13 seasons, Jordan probably would've taken the lead eventually.
But. 0-6 is written in ink in the history books.
There no such thing as a GOAT. Evolution of the game makes each generation different. There are only GOTEs... Greatest of the Era. Larry is the GOTE of his generation. Jordan is the GOTE of his.

If you want to play with "if"s.. my favorite is what if Larry Bird stayed healthy and had a decent back, along with Len Bias not dying the day after the draft.. Jordan might only have two or three rings, and Isaiah may not have any. Magic could possibly have lost one or 2, also. Bird may have wound up with 5 or 6.... none of my "what if"s are implausible, but who's to say if any of that could have or would have happened...?

I very much respect your skepticism. I think it’s the sign of a very smart person. I’m a Bird apologist. So my bias is built in. However much I appreciate honest skepticism, I’ll only add this… Legend’s MVP voting in the 80s:
    79-80 : 61 wins : 4th in MVP (shattered knuckle, shooting hand)
    80 - 81 : 62 wins : 2nd in MVP
    81 - 82 : 63 wins : 2nd in MVP
    82 - 83 : 56 wins : 2nd in MVP
    83 - 84 : 62 wins : 1st in MVP
    84 - 85 : 63 wins : 1st in MVP
    85 - 86 : 67 wins : 1st in MVP (injured back this year)
    86 - 87 : 59 wins : 2nd in MVP

In fact, he really should have won at least 4,MVP’s, I believe he was making certain other greats look almost disrespected because he was that good. In 87, and as out theiras this sounds, his rookie year. With what he did with a cellar team, taking them to 61 and 21, is astonishing. When you think about it, how does that NOT make him the MVP. Well, because he was a rookie. But say it was his 4th season, would that have made a difference, defiantly. I believe BIRD could shoot better with his left hand then 70 percent of the league today! As a young kid, I was fortunate to see him play often, as my dad had seasons tickets. I remember 2 things in particular that stood out. Firstly, I witnessed him grab a rebound in traffic and throw a left handed bullet pass, 75 ft, dead on to a streaking Danny Ainge. The pass was made with pin point accuracy, and Bird didnt even look surprised. It's inconceivable that another player then or now could make this pass so effortlessly, with their opposite hand, let alone have the balls enough to even think they could. The other memory, was watching him from the floor shoot pre game free throws, left handed while doing an interview. He wasn't really paying attention, or at least fully concentrating while talking to a reporter. It didn't matter, he hit 37 in a row before the interviewer left the floor. And then their was the FACT that he would do something magical every night that you hadn't seen before. 😊Simple put, BIRD at the peak of his powers was sublime to watch.

I had season tickets early in Bird's career. He did wild things every night. Crazy passes where you weren't sure where the ball went or an outlet pass from under the board to the other end of the court for a layup. If the game was on the line everyone there knew Bird was getting the ball and there wasn't anything the other team could do about it.
It was because Bird was called Basketball Jesus Jordan called himself Black Jesus.

  • @justinbrewer2003

Bird’s career record head-to-head against Jordan was 23-11 (including 6-0 in the Playoffs). And Bird played until 1992. Jordan had the better team than Bird for the last four years. If you want to understand why people put Bird in the GOAT conversation, I would say it’s best understood by a game on 3.31.1991… near the end of the regular season. It was Jordan’s league. Bird was playing on borrowed time… and he knew it. The Celtics were on the decline. McHale was beaten up-a shell of himself and no longer starting. Bird was literally sleeping in traction because his back was so mangled. This was after the double Achilles surgeries that (along with the broken vertebrae in his back) ended Bird’s prime. The Bulls were the best team in the league and on the road to their first championship. But Bird would not gently into that good night. Battered but unbroken, Bird outplayed Prime Jordan and Prime Pippen, putting up 35 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, a steal, and 3 blocks-playing 52 minutes-in the Celtics overtime win. It wasn’t his greatest shooting game. It wasn’t one of his many triple doubles. But to me, it was a game that defined him… playing through pain and willing his team to victory over Jordan one last time. You should watch that game (or the highlights) to understand. As the great Pat Riley said (long after Bird and Magic retired) regarding who he’d trust in the clutch, “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird.” I agree with Riley. Life on the line, I’d want Bird shooting.

in addition, the 2nd clutch shot, which was a 3 pointer to get to OT, was also off one foot.
He participated in 3 long distance shootouts at all star weekend (the first 3 they held, in 1986, 87, 88). He won all 3

Larry came into the league hot and turned around a horrible team his rookie year, the next year he won a championship. If he didn't win a MVP of the year while he was playing he was like in 2nd place. It took Jordan longer to that hot and to get his team into their 1st championship, I don't think he was as good of a team leader than Bird was. Parish played with Bird and Jordan and liked Larry's leadership qualities more. Since he the only one who did that I think we should listen. I think between these two it depends on what you enjoy watching more. Athleticism or smart hard working nonstop winning attitude , me I want Bird. I think without meaning to be , he was funny as hell. Watch his trash talking videos, the guy is a pissah.

Good video and I personally appreciate your honesty in how you think about these things. One of the more important things to keep in perspective is that Larry only ever played for 1 team. He didn't need to build a super team, he didn't need to move all over the league looking for a team that is basically buying a championship with it's high priced talent. He did what he did with whatever talent management was able to bring in. He was selfless and passed the ball a LOT when he could have taken a shot. Today's league is a lot more selfish players in my view whereas Larry just wanted the best shot during the game. His selfishness only came in those closing moments of the game because he knew he had what it took to not buckle under the pressure and had the confidence in his skill to perform under that pressure. And the last fact about his win percentage is the fact that he sat out a whole season except for 6 games and had a few seasons less than Magic. But had his health stayed as good as Magic's, I have no doubt Larry would have the win % but a few points at the least. I grew up watching Larry live on television and he embodied everything I ever tried to be on the court (though of course I could never compare to his skillset).

You're right about MJ being Hall of Fame. Magic being HoF. Worthy being HoF. Kareem being HoF.
But Bird is at least 5 HoF'ers. As you pointed out: would McHale, Parrish, DJ, Bill Walton be in the Hall of Fame without him? Would Parrish go on to be omni-present without his tutelage as team Captain? I think the only one of Bird's regular teammates that aren't in the HoF is the guy responsible for recruiting and assembling the '08-'09 Celtics that you hate so much: Danny Ainge. 😉 He retired last year so I expect his induction to come soon.
Bird was also shown to stymie Jordan when coaching the 98 Pacers. He makes everyone around him better. He's the only man to have gotten accolades through all aspects of the game: rookie, player, coach and exec.
It's not how you conquer that makes you great; it's the prosperity you bring afterwards. 🦅is 👑 in my book.
(But you're right in that it's all a matter of priorities and preference. Jordan's athleticism that still inspires sneaker sales 30 years later, or Wilt's 100 point games are impressive in their own rights.)

He got injured playing baseball that summer and he said he never had the same feel for the ball after that. He didn’t tell the Celtics about it and when they got wind of it they called him to Boston and asked him about it and he put in a display at camp and they signed him with the biggest rookie contract in history at the time. He was that good.

Did you hear what you said about Jordan, Isaiah and Worthy? They were beaten by Jordan. Bird was the only one Jordan couldn't beat. So all the excuses. Jordan was young, had no help. There's highlights of Jordan & Pippen failing at double teaming Larry, Bird had more help (that one trips me out. Because I thought this was a team game. Not a solo sport like tennis). Doesn't fly.
The fans that don't have Larry in either convos of GOAT, etc. Have any of them actually watched a game? Their age & not being alive excuse. Is crap. Since there's RUclips.
Even Lebron, Kobe & KD praises Larry. Kobe & Lebron have him in their top 3 or 5. Larry's even advised KD. There's video out there of this

Show me any other player who just for fun, decided to play a game with his off hand and again, dominate. He destroyed MJ head to head and did it after the worst back injury anyone played with and after double ankle surgery.

I am a huge LeBron fan and believe LeBron is a goat/ the goat but there are too many players that are too good in there own way to EVER determine who is the GOAT. Larry bird is a easy top 5 all time. The way that he would tell the defense what he would do so they could try to stop him and he would do it and win a game is unheard of by any other player. He literally walked into 3 point competitions go to the locker room and ask so who is going to finish 2nd? That is killer mindset. The mindset of bird was insane to be able to let you're competition think they had a chance to win and you know that you are going to destroy em with a clutch game winner while telling them the spot you will win at is above Jordan's killer mentality. That's above kobes killer mentality. He would hit multiple game winners in the same game while calling the play. Even LeBron, kobe, Jordan ain't doing that. He most definitely deserves to be in the goat convo after all this. Cuz you can't say Jordan does this nor kobe nor LeBron.

  • @harleyadam4813

When Bird went down and smacked his noggin on the parquet against the Pacers in the playoffs, he was knocked completely unconscious. After going to the locker room for treatment, he returned in the 3rd quarter with a broken face, a concussion and double vision. He proceeded to score 17 points and lead the Celtics to victory. Today's players take 2 weeks off for a bruised thumb. The best players are the ones who are there and who rise to the occasion. Bird did. Time and time again. He selflessly destroyed his body and let his teammates get points he knew were easy for him to score because he knew it took a team and he wanted to WIN. At all costs.

He should have said “Every basketball fan who knows and understands the game has Larry in the conversation.” If you don’t, that’s fine… but you don’t understand how versatile Bird was. People look at natural athleticism, but they don’t see what he does as a basketball player. He makes his whole team better with his plays on offense and defense. He’s a sniper who can shoot from anywhere, scored 40+ points with his left hand in a playoff game, he can can pass it on a dime from anywhere on the court, he averaged more rebounds in his career than Patrick Ewing (in an era with Kareem, Ewing, Malone, Hakeem, etc… where he shared the paint with real giants) … he never lost a playoff game to Jordan, he beat the Lakers with Magic, Kareem, Worthy and coached by Pat Riley (a team with two players in the G.O.A.T. conversation, three MVPs in a row (before his major back injury in 1986) no one else has done that since the ABA/NBA merge… if he didn’t injure his back in 1986, he would have won 5+ rings… no one ever had a hotter run than his 1981-1986 seasons before his injury.

Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years.

The GOAT is the guy I take first pick in the all-time NBA fantasy draft and that's Larry Bird. No doubt. You can pick his game apart and say, "Oh, this guy did this better and that guy did that better..." but when you look at the complete package? Larry Bird brought everything to the table that you want in a player and nothing that you didn't want, including loyalty, work ethic, and selflessness. He made not only his team better, but the entire league better. Take Lebron out of the NBA like he never existed and nothing would change; you take Bird out of history and try to imagine what the game would look like today.
And one more point is that Bird can play his game in any era. Go back in time, go forward and it doesn't change his style because he was all about fundamental basketball. Pass, Shoot, and Rebound and if he wasn't fast or he couldn't jump, so what? If you know exactly where everyone is going to be three seconds into the future, that's all the edge you need. He was Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year for a reason and it wasn't his looks.

Of all NBA players, Larry Bird won the second most number of games. Magic played more seasons than Larry did too. The reason you don't know about Larry Bird aka Larry Legend is because he is white. Magic Johnson once said Larry was the only player he feared. Pat Riley said if he needed a player to make a shot to save his life, he would choose Larry Bird. I once saw Larry Bird sink a ball sitting on his ass in the defensive end, all net. That was the day I became a fan. Larry was just one of those guys who only cared about one stat, the score. Robert Parish has credited Bird with at least 5000 of his points, and McHale about a 1000. Larry did need the records, he needed the wins, so he made sure the guy with the best chance to score got the ball. He was so good at the game he could shit talk and play around with his shots to make other players look stupid. Oh, and for the record Bird swept Jordan twice in the play offs, just saying. I personally do not care who the G.O.A.T. is, I am just so happy that young players are finally getting to see what I saw 40 years ago when I played the game. He was the most creative player, had the heart of 10 lions, and was the most deceptive passer I have ever seen. Now we need someone to release the old Bird highlights in high definition, so you can really see how he handled the ball.

Michael Jordan influenced his team and became a great player with his scoring with the ball. Many of the great players influence their team by scoring with the ball. Larry became great by making sure all players on his team were scores with the ball at any time he chose. If you really notice in his passing videos one-third or one-fourth of his passes he could have taken the shot. He was in position but chose a higher percentage shot with the other player always. Not all fans agree he's in the GOAT conversation. But every player who fans talk about in the GOAT conversation put Larry Bird in THEIR GOAT conversation. That matters. That really matters. As for Jordan vs. Bird, look at the fact that Jordan never beat Bird in the playoffs. Jordan's Bulls were swept twice by Bird's Celtics, for a total post-season record of 0-6. He only beat Bird once during the regular season. He actually recorded a message for Bird when he Larry retired saying he was glad that he was leaving the league because he'd ruined so many games for him, and made some very bad memories for him. He did wish him well though, so there's that.
