Nice that you didn’t specify the location, of the mural. Most of us are very respectful of the hard work, others have done. But it only takes a very minuscule few, to wreck it for everybody else. This is the pattern we love about you two; the respect for others, and their property.
If that book brings as much pleasure as a £1500 holiday, let’s say, then it’s worth it. Life’s too short to not be extravagant sometimes. 😉
I read about a study that was carried out on happiness. It found that, if you purchase something you want, your happiness level initially rises but then goes back down to where it was before the purchase. But, if you spend the money on experiences (like a holiday), your overall happiness increases and remains higher for longer. Having memories of great experiences trumps having another consumer good.

@@andysmith1996while that is generally true, some collectors items are so cool they will continue to give you joy everytime you look at them. And people that go to the same beach year after year on Gran Canaria or wherever, and drink themselves to oblivion and stuff themselves with junk, that's a form of travelling that is useless and won't enrich your soul. If your home is a barren place with no personality to it, then it wont enrich your soul either. And most people want to have homes. Being a nomad and travelling all year will burn you out at some point. So like most things in life its about balance, its not black or white, travelling doesn't always trumph collecting
@@andysmith1996yah but read a bit about it before they arnt very reliable…but a great deal is on what u purchase…you can clearly see how into the shining he is…so part of the purchase is the experience. I always love hearing enthusiasm from ppl 🙏🏼

You know Mike, "The Shining" is one of my favorite horror films of all time, and I've heard rumors that director Stanley Kubrick has intentionally left clues in the film about another event he discreetly directed years earlier, if you know what I'm talking about?

While it seems like a huge amount of money, it's still a limited edition book that's only 1000 copies in the world. That's so tiny of a manufacturing run compared to our population. So for a die hard collector, that matches. It would be even more awesome if you can get it signed by as many people associated with the movie. ❤
And hi to fellow Dark Crystal fans! I was SO happy I got to see the display and the restoration of some of the puppets. Sadly Kira's puppet is gone now though and cant be restored, but they managed to preserve her outfit. We saw that at the puppet museum in Atlanta. Awesome place!

at first i was like, "huh???" but then i'm like "oh yeah yeah definitely." that is an amazing document of history right there. Oh and the mural, that crimson ghost was wicked fresh!
I love how Taschen made the effort to make the things in the book appear as recreations of props in the movie. for example jthat scrapbook being the same one that's found on Jacks writing desk, or that red book or that is just like the red book during the interview section of the movie, the red book On Allman's desk that so many fans of the movie have speculated about.

When I was at college one of the (many) jobs I had was for a book importer that only did Taschen art books. Such beautiful editions. My father was an artist and when he died I inherited his library. Some I will give away to students but the ones that sing to me, I will keep. Art books give you pleasure for life.
Yes I bought an expensive book too. The Cemetery Danse Gift Edition of The Shining for £450, limited to 3000 copies and has the extra prologue, epilogue + a manuscript chapter called The Shine, all housed in a beautiful Slipcase. And I don't regret it at all.
Here in the UK the Taschen Shining book is £1,500 (making it just over $1,911 where you are). So you got a bargain.

What can one say but COOL. Very cool. You're a lucky guy. To see some of those artifacts you had to go to the Kubrick exhibition or archive in London. The scrapbook is the prop from the film, seemingly.

That wall mural was really cool. My wife would probably be mad if i spent that much on a book but given my hobby i know I've spent WAY more than what was spent on the book. I bet Michael really wrestled awhile on pulling the trigger. The scrap book alone would be awesome to have and see. Reminds my of a movie books i own of Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. We call our collection…The Collective. And there is a lot of strange things in it. Yes…it is actually a first pressing of his record, he was a calliope player. Also n the shelf is a first edition Satanic Bible and an antique Last Rites box. Not religious in any way shape or form…just things in The Collective.

A little surprised you just breezed right by American werewolf in London. To this day, it's still the best practical effects werewolf transformation scene in horror history. Always will be. Rick Baker is an effects legend! BTW, my wife and I love all your videos! Thank you for doing this!

I bit the bullet and bought it. Considering I've seen it selling on Ebay from $5,000 - $8,000, I'd say it was worth it. I started reading the red book -- which is really the main item in the set -- about the making of the film and it is hands down the best book about the making of a movie that I've read so far. Meticulously researched and a very rare glimpse into Kubrick's whole process. If you're a Kubrick fan or fan of the film it was well worth the $1,500.
Congrats! You will cherish this for a lifetime.

I would say it's well worth it, and not crazy to spend money on something that makes you happy if you can spare the cash. That's coming from a guy who has spent more than ten thousand dollars on vintage jackets. A lot of us have expensive hobbies/passions. That book collection will only appreciate in value.

I think it’s a good call buying the book. It’s a hard asset it’s better than having that money in a savings account and it’s something you will enjoy for yourself! I hear you say all the time you would love to have this movie prop or that collectible well it’s about time you start getting something you can enjoy for as long as you like and if anyone deserves that book it’s you.

Thank you so much for showing this! Taschen has always been one of the best publishers ever. I love the varnish they used to simulate the tape on the photos. That was one very expensive print job to even get printed. I have been a designer for over 30 years and that is a masterpiece. The Ultimate Compendium for The Shining!
