i watched this vid and was like, am i not understanding?--none of the movie was physically shot in that hotel??? I never had a clue that he recreated all this on a soundstage. mind blown🤯 The movie matches even the Native patterns on the walls and floor! Massive kudos to the ppl who built the props--holy crap they matched the tiniest detail. Totally need to see this hotel irl now. Super rad!
I find the details in Kubrick's OH being different than real life truly gives the sense that something isn't right when seeing the actual location. With the mirrored locations, different floor designs etcetera. Very similar to the actual hotel but different. So diehards who visit can sense it. Not that that was Kubrick's intention but it truly feels like it.
I love The Shining, what gorgeous amazing views of the mountains and waterfall, The Overlook is a gorgeous hotel. What an amazing birthday present....Happy Birthday 🎉.
Stanley Kubrick was an absolute stickler for attention to detail. It's amazing how he mimicked and recreated the interior of this hotel in the movie The Shining. The movie is in my personal top ten best of all time to date. Glad Jessica and you had a great time and thanks for sharing. Happy Birthday Grimm!
One of the most iconic atmospheric movies I've ever seen. The cast made the film absolutely perfect but equally the settings and and the melancholy feel of the hotel, it actually felt like a depressing place where you could fully understand why men went berserk there penned in during a winter of thick unrelenting snow. Loved this video, watching from England 👍
Wow, I never realised that the interior shots of this hotel were replicated so accurately for the film. What a brilliant birthday treat! Thank you both, for sharing this, really enjoyed it!
I like how you find the way into places, people, events, so calm and respectuf. The narrator tone/cadence reminds me actually of Heather's in The Blair Witch Project, when they shot in Burkittsville, at the very beginning. Beautiful channel.
This really felt scary to me! Like a flashback to that movie, which really stays with you! You really played up the drama and did your research! I don't know if you've done it yet, but you guys should consider staying at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which is where Stephen King said he got the inspiration to write "The Shining." He stayed in room 217. That hotel is supposed to be one of the most haunted hotels in the US and I've read that King had some interesting experiences there.
I didn't see this before commenting something very similar. Have you ever stayed there? I've never experienced anything supernatural there. We've even stayed up very late wandering the hotel.
@@StellaDuchessofLondon I never stayed there. I don't think I could! 😂 I stayed at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana, which had no connection to a horror movie but reminded me so much of the hotel in The Shining that I only stayed one day and had to leave because I was so creeped out! So I'm not a candidate for staying at the Stanley Hotel! 🤣
As reading your comment, I was thinking: this fella looks just as Morgan Freeman...and then I read your nic and it was shocking ! - You are a fuck...genius, more genial than 10 Stanleys Kubricks working together with 100% focus !!!
The diamond-patterned blanket on the wall opposite the elevators on the third floor at 26:46 is in The Shining aswell. The number of diamonds is different however, the one in the movie famously has seven on it
Thank you, Grimm and Jessica, for taking us along! What a treat! Grimm, I could see and hear how much fun you were having. What a special time for you. --- I love the Overlook just for itself, would love to be the caretaker myself. I've heard that the movie has a hidden reference to the Gold Standard on which U.S. money used to be based and connected to the Overlooks' Gold Room. Maybe just a coincidence, but I've noticed how the beautiful Gold Room bears a striking resemblance to the night club called Club Leviathan aboart the ocean liner S.S. Leviathan. The Leviathan began service as the German liner Vaterland (Fatherland) then was seized by the U.S. in 1917 and renamed as the troopship Leviathan. After the war the U.S. kept the Leviathan and she returned to passenger services under the same name for different owners and with mixed degrees of success. The Leviathan was laid up in 1934, I believe, then scrapped in Scotland in 1938. She should have been put in the Reserve Fleet because she would have been so valuable in World War II that was in the near future.
That was really cool to see and the first time I've seen the Hotel the film's set was directly inspired by. Amazing they left it unchanged all those decades now for the styling. Thank you!
Jessica in the bathtub made me wanna cover my eyes immediately, because that's always the part that scares me from the movie. Great job guys, this was an amazing trip to take with you. Happy birthday!! 🎂🎉💀⚰️
Just got back from Yosemite and came across your video looking for more info on the Ahwanee / Shining connection. So glad you did this! We snuck around the barrier into the dining room and there’s ANOTHER massive fireplace! It truly was spooky to be in there, Kubrick nailed the architecture and aesthetics of the place !

You have a done a really masterful job of conveying the incredible parallels between the Ahwahnee and the Overlook... It must have been so striking for you to be there and being in what are essentially the real-life counterparts of one of THE classic horror movies! It's uncanny seeing the two of you walking through the spaces.... Hats off to your editing and title cards between scenes as well :) Bravo! (And filming your wife in silhouette walking down the backlit tunnel was very cinematic)

Great fun. To check out the actual exterior of 'The Overlook Hotel', go to The Timberline Lodge in Oregon at the foot of Mount Hood. My buddy and I stayed there for a couple of nights when we climbed the mountain and were on the same corridor as Room 217, which is the haunted room in Stephen King's book.

I am not sure if you realize this or not but you released this video on what would have been Stanley Kubrick's 95th Birthday. Also I just seen your The Timberline Lodge video from 2 years ago. Great work Grimm.

Great camera work. Crisp details you captured of the stunning vistas, the awesome tunnels to hell and the comparison work in the hotel was top notch. Awesome video 💀🖤
I used to work in an old hotel built in 1924. The elevators had a mind of their own. They would often skip floors and it would feel like you were falling. It was really scary. After I left a maintenance worker was actually killed by the falling elevator.
The Shining is one of my favorite scary movies next to Halloween! Love your videos! You are the best narrator ! Thank you for all you both do and allowing all of us to be a part of your unforgettable “scary” adventures! Have a Blessed Birthday and……Happy Halloween!!! Angela

I hope to see you both again someday soon . You both are so down to earth and so nice I can tell you both have good hearts . Best wishes on all your endeavors.
If you stop the video at 7:45 The Rocks and the Tunnel Look like a Huge Grey Owl 🦉 And the cars going by… their brake lights are like the eyes! 😊 so cool
Absolutely LOVED this video guys! I wasn’t aware that Kubrick took inspiration from the Ahwahnee for the hotel in The Shining. Ya can’t miss the similarities! Yosemite is on my bucket list, and now I know where I’m going to stay! Thanks again for another awesome video! Love you two!
Only the Colorado Lounge is modeled after the Ahwahnee lobby and it isn’t a replica. Other than the lobby the Overlook is complete different. There is no Overlook hotel. The outside shots are taken from the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood Oregon and the inside of the Overlook was created in Pinewoods Studio in London, UK. This stuff in this video is just a re-creation.
The Shining freaked me out as a kid and still a little bit as an adult. Apparently the outside and inside were two different hotels/lodges. Thanks for providing this your and allowing us the live vicariously through your camera.
Happy birthday Michael, what a fantastic hotel to spend a night in. Looks just like the film. Next stop The Stanley Hotel (room 217) where Stephen King got inspiration for the novel? Glad to hear you mention England. You should consider visiting Whitby in North Yorkshire, the place where Bram Stoker got inspiration for the greatest horror book ever written. I believe he stayed at No.6 Royal Crescent between 1890-1896. Also Whitby Abbey which is worth a visit, very gothic. Think you'd love it there. Talking of gothic, there's also the 'goth weekend', a music and fashion festival. This happens twice a year, one in April and another in October (usually on or around Halloween), worth checking out.
You guys truly are living the dream. As someone from a third world country on the other side of the world, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving people like me a once in a lifetime tour of these amazing places. I would never able to take in all the minute details of the Overlook hotel had you not taking us for this ride. Thank you again and Happy Birthday.
Wow! So many things taken from this hotel. I’m glad there is a place we can go to see the inspirations. I wouldn’t pay that amount of money for one night simply because I’m on disability. I’d love to stay a few nights there and take photos/videos. The rugs are similar design to one of the floors Danny is riding his bike on. Really a great location for a video. It was so enjoyable to see you both enjoy a movie as much as me. I wish Shelley had better treatment. I was so glad you found her and were able to do an interview. I wish I could send her a message of love and inspiration. Anyway this video was brilliant.
I have to say, this is my new favorite video you guys have done! I loved everything about it. I especially loved how thorough you were in showing us different parts of the hotel, even your fancy third floor suite (AKA the Jared Leto suite 🤣). Leading us around at midnight was genius haha. I also loved the spooky tunnel you showed us! There were so many good shots in this video. What an absolutely stunning location! I hope you enjoyed your birthday trip, Michael!!🎃
What a journey for the both of you and taking me along for the ride! Watching this beautiful video that you both pieced together is fantastic to say the least, I actually felt I was there with you and going back into film history! Like so many fans I also love this movie it’s an absolute classic. I have to add when you walked past those massive pillars I had goosebumps as I imagined JACK TORRANCE approaching with that axe. Very creepy indeed………. Again thank you so much to the both of you for taking the time and Immense efforts for bringing this move the SHINING back to life. Thank you ❤

One of my favorite “go to” movies when I’m feeling uninspired. Just cinematically beautiful and the music…((swoon))! Everything about this classic is platinum ❤ Would love to see you two do continuations of locations for The Shining with this one as part one! Don’t recall if you’ve been to Timberline Lodge…I bet you have tho. 🤔
Wow, you guys did really great! That was so much fun! I’ve been to the Ahwahnee Hotel many times since I used to live close to Yosemite. I would usually go in winter, as hiking elsewhere in Yosemite is very limited when it’s snowing. I often took the YARTS bus (schedule is online) from Merced as I don’t like driving with chains. My friends and I would go up for lunch at the Ahwahnee, then walk to Yosemite Lodge and visit Cook Meadow behind Yosemite Lodge. The views are spectacular! The Ahwahnee is very tastefully decorated during Christmas time, especially that huge fireplace. I hope you do get back there during the 🎄Season and enjoy lunch at the Ahwahnee! Thanks for the outstanding video!
I had thought incorrectly that a hotel in Estes Colorado had been partially used for the Shining. I formerly worked at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon and the building’s design was used as a backdrop for the film. There is also a scene when the late Scatman Carothers is driving a light blue Toyota Snowcat and there is a small short glimpse of the Timberline Lodge logo on the driver’s side door on the vehicle. Thanks for taking on the expense of staying in the hotel and happy birthday, it is a special day to remember. I might recommend you stay at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon, also listen to the soundtrack of The Shining.

I used to work in an old hotel built in 1924. The elevators had a mind of their own. They would often skip floors and it would feel like you were falling. It was really scary. After I left a maintenance worker was actually killed by the falling elevator.
Damn😳
This is fantastic! Always wanted to visit here, nice work guys!👍👍
U guy's take what it takes to go to any location on making these videos absolutely splendid work 👻👌
They are the best
@@lifeisfundisney6029 most definitely 👍
The Shining is one of my favorite scary movies next to Halloween! Love your videos! You are the best narrator ! Thank you for all you both do and allowing all of us to be a part of your unforgettable “scary” adventures! Have a Blessed Birthday and……Happy Halloween!!! Angela
I've been with you since the beginning Michael and this just might be my favorite one. Of course I love the Shining, and Jessica looks amazing walking through the mountain tunnel And opening the shower curtain! Wasn't expecting that. Absolutely great job, my favorite movie of all time.
Thank you for being here since the beginning…and for watching our crazy adventures.
@@grimmlifecollective Absolutely man. I remember the Georgia/Florida days. You're still one of my favorite channels.
@@grimmlifecollectiveI love your channel as well - been watching you guys for a few years. I was in Yosemite National Park last week - it's a gloriously beautiful place. What a special treat to stay at the Overlook Hotel!
Wow its amazing how much of the hotel stanley incorporated into the film 😮.. amazing thank you! And it also answered many questions on the hotel where SO many people say it WAS filmed, and for you to be honest and tell us they never actually filmed there ! Thank you! 👏🏻👍🏻
Absolutely chilling to watch and definitely can see the shining as if it’s really being filmed as your walking us through it , yes I definitely see it
Love Stanley Kubrick (rest in peace)
Incredible! Thanks for taking us along, read the book in 79!, wow had no idea that place actually existed , knew the set was built etc, now I want to go, that was quite a trip y’all took and that tunnel was pretty dangerous looking be careful, and the bathtub scene recreated by Jessica I actually got goosebumps! If anyone at anytime during your tour would have jumped out and said boo! I would have had a heart attack sitting here in my study in north Texas, thanks again and it’s getting close my favorite time of year the run up to Halloween! Happy Belated Birthday!
Michael and Jessica it was such a honor meeting you both today at midsummer scream you both were the best part of the event . this is Lisa the tall girl 😂 We came home tonight to watch your new videos . I hope to see you both again someday soon . You both are so down to earth and so nice I can tell you both have good hearts . Best wishes on all your endeavors.
If you stop the video at 7:45
The Rocks and the Tunnel
Look like a Huge Grey Owl 🦉
And the cars going by… their brake lights are like the eyes!
Your videos are so well made and brilliantly filmed. Thank you so much for making these. 😊
The sheer excitement and joy you're feeling just being there is infectious. I'm now a follower❤
Incredible how the set recreated this hotel. I used to live near Elstree studios, they are huge. Very interesting!
Very cool 😎
One of my favourite videos you have done. Amazing shots! And wow, the hotel really is one of the most beautiful hotels I have seen!
LOVED this video! Can only imagine how it felt being there, was amazing enough watching along 😁😁
One of the greatest horror films of all time. 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Again thank you so much to the both of you for taking the time and
Immense efforts for bringing this move the SHINING back to life.
Thank you ❤
👏🏼🖤👏🏼 Great video!

Superb video Grimm's, and so fitting there is a mop and bucket next to the blood elevator! (16:50)
SOMEBODY... knew you were coming! 🇬🇧👻🇺🇲
This is a a EPIC BIRTHDAY GIFT!!! Your editing is brilliant Mr.Grimm. Great video🎥💜🖤 Love Love Love this movie.
Hopefully you guys were able to experience the park as well. It is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Happy birthday Michael and thank you Jessica for giving this awesome birthday present to Michael and thank you both for creating this video such a beautiful place👻👻🔥🔥
The actual hotel that was the inspiration for the movie is in Estes Park, Colorado.
What a treat you have brought to us here in this video. Thank you for all of the hard-work and research you put into this (every video) video ! Happy Birthday, Michael! And hello beautiful Jessica❤
One of the best films ever made. I watch it every year in winter.
Y’all are unstoppable! Love the content and editing!
This was wonderful to see in 4K .
Another amazing production. ❤
It's just past midnight here in NYC, I purposely waited til now to watch and as always, you both did not disappoint! What a gorgeous place! What a kick-ass b'day present! Happy birthday, kind sir. 🎂🎊🎉🎁
Did you get stuck in any of the storm? Showed all those trees down in Bensonhurst.
@@samanthab1923 I live in Northern Manhattan. Far from Bensonhurst. Just a few rumbles of thunder. No more.
WOW, I absolutely loved this!! Thank you for showcasing this gorgeous hotel and truly walking us through the "Overlook Hotel" from one of my favorite movies. ❤
My family and I lived in the Central Valley for a decade and we loved visiting Yosemite. We felt so privileged to live that close to nature this pristine. Sadly we never visited the Ahwahnee. And you are right, this place books far out and is very expensive. This is a bucket list item! Once again, thank you both for sharing your experience. Gave me chills!! What an Incredible Birthday Present! Great job Jessica! 🎉
Outstanding Video. Thank you Michael and Jessica for posting it.. Hello Lloyd a Little slow tonight. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Stanley Kubrick was a Genius, you guys did him proud really enjoyed this so so much Big Love to you both. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Best actor (Jack Nickolson), best director (Stanley Kubrick), best author (Stephen King) in my opinion ❤❤❤
HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY MIKE 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂.I ❤❤❤ HOW YOU FILM JESSICA WALKING BACK OUT OF THE TUNNEL IN THE DARK WITH JUST A BIT OF LIGHT BEHIND HER AND THE MUSIC👍👍👍 FOR A FEW SECONDS IT REMINDS ME OF THE HORROR MOVIE THE NUN .WHEN SHE COMES FLOATING DOWN THE HALLWAY TOWARDS YOU SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME .FANTASTIC VIDEO MIKE&JESS ❤❤❤❤ IT
Finally !!! Someone actually stays at the hotel that inspired the interior for the film . Awesome job! 🤘so many people go to the hotel in Colorado not realizing the interiors were inspired by the Awahnee hotel in Yosemite .
The reason to go to the hotel in Colorado is because that's where Stephen King wrote the book and what inspired him.
Wow, the movie really captured the essence of the real hotel. I have even more respect to the production crew.
