  • This ride was during a Broken Enduro family event in Baldy Mesa / Phelan, California. This area had been hit by a lot of snow, and rained all day the long the day before. This made for interesting conditions, being extremely slick and slippery in most places. After a bit of a learning curve, this became a fun day out.

I cannot believe how fast you can ride down the Widow Maker, or any steep downhill for that matter. Freaks me out! The cheater line animations were awesome! Had me laughing!

The thing that helped me with downhills is mountain bike riding with dudes that are very fast. You just have to let the bike do its thing and try to pick good lines as fast as you can. But in the case of the Widow Maker, I think I was just sliding and had no real control of my speed. Haha.
I had to out myself on the cheater line. Chris took the hard way, and fought through it. I decided to make life easy for a minute.

Yeah I want to take advantage of the wet soil in the deserts, since the mountains are all snow packed.

At least it wasn't just me who thought the conditions were crazy. And the speed you carry through the nasty stuff is amazing I'm just happy I could keep it up on two wheels.

The way the conditions were at the beginning of the ride had me questioning even trying to make it out to the widow maker. Hanging out in the garage with a warm meal seemed like a way better option. But I'm glad we all kept at it and learned a little more. After watching your video of this day, I think you worked a lot harder than we did. Having to help pick up the falling bikes out of the mud would have exhausted anyone.

Nice Brent, at least it wasn’t dusty!

Two words. Taller Knobbies. The Mid-West deals with this mud most of the year. They run harder rubber, no air in the rear, and knobs that a double height what is used on the west coast.

Hey John! Yeah I can definitely see having tall knobbies being able to scoop more and also commit to corners better. Luckily I don't have to ride this stuff all year, but it was fun once we got moving.

conditions look great! I've been wanting to go up since the snow and rain but wasn't sure how much snow there would be. Looks like its mostly gone. Ill have to go up in the next couple weeks.

It got better as the day went on, but the morning was tricky. It was as slick as ice in some spots, till the sun hit it for a while. Still a great day, and I can't wait to get out there again. Ride safe!

Great riding in the soup with you. Day two was really good; it had dried out quite a bit. Did Collin inspire you to get a video out quickly?

My rut-brother!! Dude that was hilarious out there. But it's awesome to see how quick you and Chris have become.
I think Collin had his video out before I got home that day. Not sure how he did that. Haha.
