Why do you think Focus ST 2019 with 280PS(twin scroll turbo and 420NM of torque) barely beats a Civic type-r that has 320 PS but much less torque. Ecoboost has no valve lift but its has an awesome overboost that most almost all car makers dont even dare to try to reproduce, cause they cant control the beast. Ever wonder why a simple 1.0 fiesta with 3 in line has variable torque? before hitting 5500 torque is 175 NM once you go into overboost almost 200NM. Having spent a decent amount of time in an F20C JDM (9125rpm fuel cut and the actual record breaking 250hp output design), VTEC crossover is one of the most fun NA things I've experienced that you can use 100% of on the road, without getting into really dangerous territory. It's like a four stroke 2 stroke if that makes sense. I've ridden some NASTY highly modded 2 strokes before, like over bored, no power valves all top end type of stuff. Daily driven litre bikes for years so the speed isn't impressive for me, the experience is. People love to hate on Honda but they don't get it or have different interests. The difference is the other manufacturers rarely include the variable valve lift (the fun part). @@omgwtflmaololrotfl2368 yeah you got it. a musical and moaning ferrari v8, or a roaring, beefy musical, perfectly tuned exhaust on a cammed LS3.
I've daily driven modded superbikes not much slower than a plaid back before a veyron existed, imagine how unfair it was for people trying to race me then in street cars? Speed is cool but usable speed and EXPERIENCE is far more fun and interesting to me all these years later.
Combining both though is like meditation when you have the right environment. It's hard to describe if you have not experienced a vehicle with extreme characteristics and mastered it, mechanical ballet and zen in one.

yes vtec uses 2 differrent camshafts lobes that are optimized for different rev ranges so when you come near the upper range it changes to the more agresive camshaft profile and it changes the sound because it affects the intake and exhaust valves timings
