I don't understand the rule on the first turn. If the first player doesn't want the card, can't he just draw normally from the stock pile? Why does he have to "pass"?
GREAT QUESTION. I hope you don’t mind if I pin this! ❤️ The special first turn rule is there to make things fair. It lets both players have a shot at the first card in the discard pile before it gets covered. After that, both players also get equal chances with other cards added to the discard pile.
very good instructional video. I'll have to watch it 3 or 4 times because almost 30 years worth of bong resin makes learning new shit a process but nonetheless its the best gin rummy instructions I've found
In Rare Cases, if a player melds 10 Cards + 1 Drawn Card, that's called Big Gin. For Big Gin, You take the value of the Other Player's deadwood value and add it with the Big Gin Bonus which is the Gin Bonus+11 Points
Ive played variations of Gin Rummy where you CAN lay melds on your turn and the Undercut and Gin bonuses were different. Also no mention of BIG Gin where you draw and form an 11 card hand. Other than that I think iis an excellent explanation
I have another question! What if I knock and my opponent and I both have the same amount of deadwood and there's nothing to them to layoff into my hand? Is it a tie and we both get no points?
In that case I recommend that you both put your hands up in the air and say "woaaaaaa!", jk, you both get zero points just like you said. Extra fun fact: in tournaments/gambling you also get bonuses for how many games you win, called a line bonus, but I did not cover that play-style in this video. I only cover games that are played just for fun (and they really gotta be fun).
One more detail needs clarification, when a player picks the face up card on the discard pile, are they allowed to discard that same card if they happen to change their mind or must they suck it up and lay down a different card?
@ 7:01 you said "if the player (who knocks) has less than their opponent they win the round" etc. What if the opponent plays off but its a tie? Who wins?
Great question! If you draw it from the stock pile you may discard it the same turn. If you pick it up from the discard pile you cannot discard it until the following turn.
There can't be a tie because the knocker will still get points even if both got the same point value of their respective hands post layoff. The knocker still will get 10 points. A "tie" is still considered an uppercut, in other words, still a win for the knocker
Great question! There are all kinds of house rules for a false knock in gin rummy. Personally, in a friendly game, if someone knocks with more than 10 points and they’re the only one who showed their cards, I just let them pick their hand back up and keep playing. Another common rule is to keep the round going, but make the player who knocked incorrectly leave their hand face-up on the table.
Thanks for posting. I learned to play from your video but while I was putting everything in to practice with my partner, there was a scenario that wasn't addressed. What if I knock and my opponents deadwood completes my deadwood so both of us have complete hands? What is the point system for that?
Hi Gemma! I think your a little bit off track. Watch this part again, starting at 6:15! Let me know if that sets you straight. ✌️. (Hint: only one player gets to lay off, which one? and they are only allowed to lay off on their opponents. ___ &. ______.)
I enjoyed your video so much. Thank you! At the end you mentioned another video featuring three scenes from movies where gin rummy is played but I don’t see that video. Did it perhaps get taken down because of copyright issues? Again, thank you!
Good question. Gin was specially designed to be a two player game. One thing that makes it two player only is the way it’s scored. Check that out at the end of the video and you’ll see what I mean..
Hi rulies. She everything 5 here. (it used to be bro channel. do you like my new name?) I was just wondering if your going to make a new video soon. Its been about 4 weeks now and your average posting time is two to three weeks. looking forward to your next video. I love your channel so much, and i know I've said that in past comments. but i really do love it when you come out with new videos and your so grate at making them to. hope all is well, your friend, Shea everything 5 (ps, i always love your cards!)
Hi Shea everything! I'm away on vacation so might be a few more before I am back. On the bright side, I've been playing some great new games while I am away so I have lots of new material for when I'm back.
I am in my mid 30’s and my entire life I have believed that I grew up playing gin rummy. Apparently, I was wrong. I wonder what it was that I have been playing??
The answer to this was Rummy 500. For whatever reason my family used both those names interchangeably. We’d call it gin rummy for a quick game and rummy 500 if we were planning on playing for a while. Not sure why. But it was definitely Rummy 500 that I’ve always played lol.
If all 10 cards in a player's hand fit into melds and thereby the player has no deadwood, they can choose to go Gin in which case the round ends and the player going Gin receives a Gin bonus of 25 points (or another established amount) plus any deadwood points in the opponent's hand
I like the idea of 20 for gin and 10 for undercutting, but the online apps do 25 for each. I don’t like that. Gin shouldn’t be 25 and definitely not 25 just for undercutting IMO
@@jeffk1722 the 25/25 bonus makes the game more interesting and skill-based imo. If the gin bonus is too low, especially coupled with just a 10 point undercut penalty, it removes a lot of strategy from the game because it's almost always best for both players to just try to knock as soon as possible with a wide variety of hands rather than to go for gin (for the possibility of catching their opponent with a bad draw and high deadwood count/without really needing to be concerned about the possibility of losing a few points to being undercut).
Nice work on the tutorial. Watched a couple of others, but I ended up just as confused as I was before I watched em. Maybe more of a knock on my IQ than their tutorial, but either way, any idiot can understand this tutorial. Even me! 🤣 Appreciate it!
hi. its me again. i just learned a awesome game called nertz. its like spit only you can have 2 to 8 players! all you need in one deck of cards for each player and good reflexes. go to gather together games channel and search for peanuts to learn about it. i think your going to love it!
Thanks John!!!! 1.) That game looks awesome. 2.) I get the feeling someday you’re gonna have a card channel of your own, and I’m gonna subscribe to it!
i think your doing a awesome job keep it up. BTW to be clear if the player that knocked had less dead wood points then the other player then the player that knocked would subtract the other players points by his points. for example the knocker player had 8 points and the other player had 20. so the knocker player would get 12 points. am i correct. please reply yes or no please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6:48 "They cannot meld into their opponents deadwood" said as they try to put a 10 onto the opponent's meld on the screen..... Damn, this is the third video I've watched and nobody seems to know how to play this game.
Hi Maria, don’t worry, I got you! Go back a few seconds earlier and watch again. 6:34 “They can take their deadwood and include it into the knockers melds”. Deadwood is leftover cards that are not melded, so the example is correct. Hope that helps!

Same card can be placed down as the one which was picked up.
Best explanation, especially of scoring, that I've found. Thanks!
Thank you!
I wonder, what happens to the card that you put face down when you knock. What does that do?
@ 7:01 you said "if the player (who knocks) has less than their opponent they win the round" etc. What if the opponent plays off but its a tie? Who wins?
If it a tie, then the knocker is undercut. (Thanks for the great question)
