4:20 this is an important stage in every AE86 build. The "Stack a bunch of random shit and parts on and in the shell, so that it can marinate in shit so that when fully built, it will be a properly shitty AE86 for you to love and hate
It would also be interesting to find out how the existing AE86s are spread out throughout the world. ... I'm pretty sure Ireland would be at 1st place as you guys have been hoarding them ever since 😅
Being in the vehicle restoration for longer than I care to remember, a little tip, get some hammerite kurust, dab it on some grey or red scotch brite and go to town on your steel engine parts, wipe it over so the whole part is covered, let it change colour but still damp, give it a good scotch to clean the pitted areas and depends what finish your after, paint/ clear coat or metal polish, you can get away with painting most of the pulleys but not the surface the cambelt runs on, great channel guys, my inner geek is loving the ae86 history and numbers
I don't know if this is just me but damn the change in montage music kinda made me cry, honestly feels like the music is now representing the progression on the car and the fact it's once again moving forward and damn that really hit me lol. Then again maybe my music analysis theory stuff is making me see this another way, anywho loving the vlogs and can't wait to see you finally finish your 86!
No matter how long the process takes, I'll always be here to see the 86's progress. Been following since he bought the car, and now even though it's a slow process, I can really sense that when the 86 gets put back up together, she's gonna be one of if not the best example of an AE86 ever.
Did you take into account New Zealand? A shitload of AE85s and AE86s ended up here and many rusted out or got wrapped around trees and lamposts, but many still live on. 20 years ago, you couldn't give away an AE85 or 86, then the drift scene started and that consumed a lot of them, and nowadays they are highly sought after cars. A bare body shell will sell for the same price as a brand new bmw.
I am a simple man, I see you fellers uploading a video, I like it. If I see Reuben in his fire demon mode, it will stay in my heart forever. Cheers lads.
Keep up the good work, Neil. Loving the weekly vids. You guys are a bunch of top blokes, bloody hilarious, and I wish you continued success with the AE86 and the vids.
FYI there are sites online with all of the EPC data and parts diagrams since way back. Can't really access the stuff under the hood like that though, obviously. I've had access to the current Microcat system and it all mostly checks out, except for replacement parts numbers. Shame you can't pull production numbers from MC too since it's all web-based. My plan before was to buy some of those car identification manuals the parts departments used to get before you could just write the VIN into a program and get all the info on the car. I.e. the time before time when Toyota workshop and parts guys actually knew what codes meant. Those manuals show up on YAJ and I'm fairly sure they also contain VINs and production numbers. Still wanna do it to figure out all the E70s ever made, those numbers should be wiiiiiild.
Your starter motor contacts are worn ! (I can see it in the film), I might have some in garage, when I worked at White and Lockwood Toyota we used to order them from somewhere (not Toyota), some electrical supplier. You can swap the worn one for the good one sometimes and it will last another few thousand miles. Only one wears (the first one that contacts), I used to swap them for new all the time at Toyota. But you can swap one side to the other at a push (Ask Bryan D). Please dont use wire brush on pistons a brass (suede) brush is much less aggressive but just as effective. (It wont damage the alloy). Please don't sand your valves ( I learned this at Toyota and Yamaha training courses) lots of valves are sterite coated or titanium, (I thought the silver or blacktop had titanium but I might be wrong it might be the Black top beams im thinking about) these valves can be cleaned with bench grinder with wire brush wheel attatchment in seconds with much less damage to the coating on the valve. Some of Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Honda engines I have worked on have stated in the Genuine workshop manual that if the valve is sterite then it should not even be ground in. The cylinder head was copied by Toyota from the Cosworth BD engine family. I have seen Toyota USA genuine adverts for the 4AGE , they used it in a single seater one engine series and in N.A form the 1587cc engine produced 250bhp. Love the chassis number episodes, All Euro cars have 17 digit Vin numbers, thats how we tell an import bike or car from Japan in the uk, the Toyota manuals (genuine) used to tell you loads of info in the front pages like what all the letters meant. I think Bryan is great, I bet he's forgotten more than we will ever know. Remember its T1 and TE1 that you short for timing !!!! (But thats another story). Much love, Michael Mahoney (michael marni).
Not an 86 guy, I'd love to have one, but there's a lot of other cars I'd choose first. If you know where I'm coming from. But I am a lover of information! Tanks for the facts! Glad to see the weekly vids. Still trying to find the perfect spot for my classic Juicebox sticker. Wife's X5? Maybe.
I get that being a continent over doesn't help with sourcing ones when looking for them, but with that kind of production run one would think they would be a bit easier to find. Cool vid though, very informative!
From what we can gather, the AE88 is just a vin separation code that Toyota decided to use to distinguish between the US models, AE86 is still stamped on the frame of both the GTS and the SR models and the code still corresponds to the original numbers.
Would suggest that cleaning unpainted (or painted but leaving original paint on) parts is better in ultrasonic bath. When blasting we make surface more rough by making micro craters what is not good for gasketed surfaces and roughness makes better adhesion of dirt. Ultrasonic cleaning on the other hand saves paint ang original roughness while removing rust and dirt to real JUST OUT OF FACTORY state. On video we see that blasting didn`t remove soot on throttle plates while ultrasonic cleaning would make it superclean. Any type of blasting is good when prepearing for painting or removing old paint, but for cleaning purposers ultrasonic is best choise. Dreaming of making big enough ultrasonic bath for my shop to fit engine block in. That`s probably only way to clean rusty water passages and remove all deposits in oil channels.
An ultrasonic Cleaner would have been a good option, unfortunately we do not have access to a decent one. The Media used for this type of blasting was incredible fine, leaving a very smooth finish, the pitting will still exist in places but it its almost impossible to see with the naked eye, I would hope that the softer material of a gasket will help to seal the necessary places. I guess this is trial and error, we will see how it goes!
Our USDM delivered cars have JT2 vins, but our frame numbers are all AE86 whether the car is a JT2AE85**** (Sr5) or JT2AE88**** (GTS) Just a bit more to add to the confusion
On Sammit recent video japan's biggest nostalgic car event there is a bit about a company selling new a86 body parts they started remanufacturing incase interested
my car was manufactured in July 1987, the production number is AE86-0285721 my car is a US spec SR5 single cam with drum brakes. as far as i can tell from the numbers it was one of the last ones made. installed a AE92 4AGZE swap 2 years ago.
Are there seperate numbers for "AE88"? I was just wondering. However, the USDM GT-S models are still labeled as "AE86" in the model code so I'm not sure if it is seperated.
I've watched the last 64 episodes over the last month or so, and I dont even notice when you say Brian or Duggie, we know who your talking about lad no worries
mega fun fact: 20 AE86s were made in convertible form, they are very rare. all of them have the Trueno front end. they were sold only in the Tama City Toyota Dealership in Japan, only a few of them still exist.
Interesting if the blasting media didn't shaved material and created gaps between the throttle body and butterfly valve because if it is, you'll get issues with idle
The Media used for vapor blasting is incredibly fine and barley cut into the metal, its still super smooth after we were finished. I guess we wont know until we fire it up but it didn't seem to do a whole lot except clean the parts.
Is the US SR5 included in the ae86 numbers or the ae85. My sr5 of course says ae86 on the firewall but inside the plastics on the interior they actually are tagged ae85.
From what we can gather, the AE88 is just a vin separation code that Toyota decided to use to distinguish between the US models, AE86 is still stamped on the frame of both the GTS and the SR models and the code still corresponds to the original numbers.
Media blasting the machined surfaces for the injector seats seems like a poor idea to maintain good seals. Hopefully its not a potential fuel leak spot. :(
Check how many in Ireland.. I say over 1000..Hay lads does any one know if a clutch from a fwd twin cam.. Ae92.. Fit a rwd one are thay same fit...???????????
Can we try and figure out how many of those ae86’s are now in Ireland I know you briefly touched on it in the other video but would be curious to know exactly and I’m from Australia so I would also be curious how many we have I’ll try count as many of them I can at the ae86 festival we have coming up soon 😂

Thank for a another video with Ruben catching his hair on fire. Idk if i spelght ih name right
I own 1 of 364868 ever produced. Now that they have gotten rarer it'd be interesting to find the current numbers.
That satisfied my mild OCD very much
But Neil! The "Ae86" with the twin cam (corolla GTS) was a ae88 in Canada / USA ! The single cam cars being ae86's (chassis code)
From what we can gather, the AE88 is just a vin separation code that Toyota decided to use to distinguish between the US models, AE86 is still stamped on the frame of both the GTS and the SR models and the code still corresponds to the original numbers.
Bet you wished you had the block and gearbox done now! That cam cover too!

Dead on as usual lads
On Sammit recent video japan's biggest nostalgic car event there is a bit about a company selling new a86 body parts they started remanufacturing incase interested
HELLO FROM AUSTRALIA its 7:33am mums yelling at me but ive got more important "tings" to be doin. like watching this video.

Love the the 4agze got one in my FX Corolla and 3 in the shed
If yours is 285721, then something is off because it says 285596 in the video is the cutoff for one of the line numbers from one plant.
596 was the end of AE86 production my car is technically an AE85
Are there seperate numbers for "AE88"? I was just wondering. However, the USDM GT-S models are still labeled as "AE86" in the model code so I'm not sure if it is seperated.

We are still a little uncertain if they are official cars, we've seen them a few times in books and stuff but look like custom cars.
More AE86s made than AE85s? 85s must be rarer so worth more!
No not really lol
awesome! What is the name of the program? I would love to find a copy to do some homework on my old Toyota Pickup (aka Hilux)!
Great ... now I have to buy a vapour blaster
Can you find out how many MX63 Cressidas were built?

Thats pretty interesting. If its 86 on the chassis its included in the numbers.
What about the north America ae88? In Canada and USA the gts is stamped ae88
From what we can gather, the AE88 is just a vin separation code that Toyota decided to use to distinguish between the US models, AE86 is still stamped on the frame of both the GTS and the SR models and the code still corresponds to the original numbers.
@@juiceboxforyou oh cool! I have a sr5 chassis so it says ae86 😅 but was basically a 85
we have about 25 AE85 survived in Sri Lanka
Nearly 400,000 units. Not very high sales numbers for such a notorious car.
Sad to think we're losing all these 86's to rust and getting wrapped around trees hahaha
Welp better get used to rice and beans cuz I guess now I've gotta save up for a vapor blaster
Media blasting the machined surfaces for the injector seats seems like a poor idea to maintain good seals. Hopefully its not a potential fuel leak spot. :(
