Toyota AE86 - How Many Did They Make? (And A Brief History) | Juicebox Unboxed #62

- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2020
- How many AE86 's did Toyota produced worldwide? A question we try to answer in this video. This episode started because two of our Truenos were 40 cars between each other on the assembly line in 1987 and now they live in the same shed. We also uncover some rare photos and interviews with the head designers and engineers on the AE86 chassis.

Forget about Donut Media with their; "Everything you need to know, to get up to speed on the AE86". You just gave us literally everything you need to know about the AE86.
I love donut media but true :D
yep this was way better and no random yelling.
@@JostenDooley BUT MORE POWA BABY!!!!
Yeah, this runs rings around DM.
i guess their podcast is super detailed on what they talk about
Few things can make my day like someone reading a Google translation from Japanese to "engrish" in an Irish accent. It's a wonderful time to be alive lol
Hahahahahaha
And the accent is very mild compared to some. "Strong Irish Accent" warnings haha
i wish that the 35 year old crusty corolla was still cheap and reliable
It's cheap if you make good money and it's always been reliable bruh
Go to japan and it's cheap, everything's relative to where u live
Import it. The 86 cost like 2k to 6k.
He even says it’s reliable in the vid kid
@@takcleberry course it is it's a Toyota
oh boys I've been waiting for the crack
Craic* don't do crack kids
I'm gonna be honest. I am 14 so as you'd expect I watch youtube all the time. And I can assure you this is one the of the best videos I've ever seen just down to the in depth details throughout the whole video. Great work keep it up. Love every vid you do
Quite literally a reference point in the history of the AE86
I made a series called I love my 86 a few years ago, I must dig them out for you.
I loved them! You came to our original shed and interviewed a few of the lads
Still watch them to this day 🤙
please dont show it pleaase....... ha ha ha please
Where is the sauce? I need it!
4:56 The Mugen Motul civic!
from this i worked out my car rolled of the line on the 18th of December 1986 and if production was 24/7 it was 2:20 in the morning and was the 14th car made that day
I’m glad you call the SR5s and GTS’ an AE86, in which they are. The Initial D kids and a few Aussies like to complain that they’re AE85s (which we’re never sold in the USA) and the AE88 (which is just to tell the owner it’s a GTS car) but it’s always nice to see someone so reputable get the information correct.
AE85's were importer in the US I do have a parts car a 1986 GTS Coupe the VIN starts as JTAE85 I seen a few like that one .
Randall A That my friend is a AE86 DX, not a GTS. All USA cars are AE86s, stamped on the firewall. You have a DX SR5, which is a base model SR5.
fun fact: one of the VERY first cars to cross the east/west-border in germany was a (back then) illegal imported corolla gt (because they were only allowed to drive eastern european cars back then), driving from eastern germany to west germany
www.bild.de/regional/leipzig/leipzig-news/wende-ich-war-der-erste-im-westen-63547300.bild.html its german, but still very neat, including a picture of said car
Thats very interesting!
@@02lucy666 hey I was just looking through this article but it seems they removed the picture. Any chance you still have it, or know where I can find it?
@@MrSpikyJD ahh, bummer, unfortunately i did not save that picture :/ maybe eventually it will pop up somewhere again?
@@02lucy666 I hope so! Sounds like a valuable piece of history
Seriously tho what are the chances of 2 mates on the other side of the world having cars that old built in the same factory in the same 24 hours madness 😲 this was a great watch fair play man.
4AGE was the bomb when it was first released, way ahead of its time.
moto-gte its actually based off the Cosworth BDA
@@KillianOBrien86 thx for saving me the trouble. cheers lad!
I just realised, building the export models in the Aichi prefecture makes sense, as Nagoya has a large port and would make exporting quicker instead of the Shizuoka plant, which is not on the coast line. This video is such a win and I rewatch it from time to time. I remember driving with my AE86 next to its plant in Shizuoka, when I bought it in Japan.
I think more then half of US ae86 are current here in Puerto Rico.
My mom's first car was a manual ae86, she didnt have it for long considering my dad got his hands on it on one day she went on a trip and wrapped it around a tree.
One of my new favorite videos of all time now.
I adore the 86, and shitboxes in general, it's a dream car of mine, and learning more of this little warrior makes me want one even more. Amazing work!
Best video ever.
I've got car 0101461 from the A52 plant which is an early 1985 3 door GT Apex Trueno in 2T7 panda colours.
I'd love to know how many of those original 360,000 cars are still going and how many are actually road worthy!
A lot of them got crashed in the 90s drift fever and a lot of them are still slive
Stipe Marić yeah, no shit, it’d be good to know the numbers of survivors though.
I might be able to track most of the AE86s in the United States, Puerto Rico, UK and some other countries through VINwiki. There's a lot more roadworthy ones than you may believe.
I hope this video will become the go to ae86 reference video. I’ve seen so much wrong information and bullshit in general posted over the years. This video is a breath of fresh air.
a true twin cam historian
I’m a 45 year old married man with a kid . I’m probably the last guy your RUclips channel is aimed at , but I love the channel. I was there through the 00s when these cars were everywhere. I had an evo 6 , a 02 Sti Impreza and a 04 sti spec c . God this stuff brings back great memories
No wonder 86s cost so much in Australia, I've only seen 1 in real life and ive never seen it since.
They don't come out much these days. Most are weekend warriors,or track cars now, very few are still daily driven.
I've owned four ADM-spec AE86's over the years myself. There are still plenty around, you just won't see them on a daily basis.
If you're in Perth there is a few of us that get about still. :)
I remember when I was around 11 years old looking for ae86s and found a bone stock one in my town, I think it was 3-5000 dollars (AUD) and now realising I'll probably never see one for that price ever again
many have been bought cheap and imported to Ireland.
The last time I saw an AE86 was two-three years ago. I'm not even sure if It was an actual AE86 because the AE85 look similiar because of the fixed headlights.
I live in Bulgaria and I was in Razgrad with my family just to buy something from the supermarkets. As I was walking down the street I've stumbled upon on that car. It was blue in color, but it was riced out. Big spoiler, big bumpers and tinted windows. Sadly I forgot to take a picture of it.
I think there're around 10 registered AE86's or AE85's in my country. Mostly used for track racing.
The 4A-GE was basically a Japanese clone of the fabled Cosworth BDA engine from the Ford Escort. Check out the bore and stroke figures.
That's the Japanese way, find something and do it better
The valve sizes are the same also, and the port sizes are very similar as well IIRC. With them both being 1.6L performance engines though, that's to be expected. The laws of physics don't change because they're being written in Japanese instead of English.
Is an SR20 a copy of a 4G63,or the FA20 a copy of both of the others because they all have the same bore and stroke when they're all 2L engines?
This video is destined to have at least 1 Million views, GREAT WORK! 30 mins of my life went flying, thats when you know a video is good!
thanks gives me reasonable time frame of when my ae85 was built it's a 1983 chassis 0008713
