- Looking like the wreckage of an Alien space craft, this Futuristic Sculpture is Art Jim, but not as we know it. Commisioned by a forward thinking Burnley Council & designed by Tonkin Liu Architects

The collection of tubes makes the strangest sounds when the wind blows, which is often round the location at Crown Point, on the moorland overlooking Burnley. Seen in the background is Pendle Hill, famous for the PENDLE WITCHES. Maybe in the sculpture, the myth lives on. Let me know what YOU think.

As a sound designer and producer, I have to say I'm of two minds about this...while I totally love and e
espect the work that went into creating the piece itself, I find the sound it makes to be deeply disturbing and unpleasant...as do so many other other commenters here. Its a shame the designers couldn't spend a bit more time analyzing the frequency response the tubes can deliver and then arrange their positions to produce more harmonious sonic tonalities...
Agree! It's a great idea, but without any attention given to tuning the pipes, the result is quite unpleasant.
Comrade Woodski Comrade...Nice commentary and I understand and agree with your points. That said let me add this: there is a dimension where, as you point out, two art forms coincide....in this case the blending of the architecture of pipes with the science of sound and tonality. That point of convergence creates the opportunity for a true marriage of the two forms and functions. In this case that marriage should produce the sonic beauty that is more than possible within these two mediums. As you point out it would have been nice and easy for the designers to create the piece utilizing the calculations so readily available....
I'd like to see you make something better... just saying...
I think it's perfect as it is. Art isn't supposed to make you feel nice all the time and seldom do I ever find artwork as disturbing as this.

This sculpture is based on the melody of the wind. The tune changes depending where you face it. Personally i love the eerieness of both the sound and the design. Its a really amazing consept if not creepy
So beautiful, so majestic, but also so cryptic and eerie.

I don't think I could live next to that, but it is pretty cool. Maybe have some automated caps so you could turn it off when you need your sanity back.

Me and my wife went to this singy ringy tree today, just on the outskirts of Burnley. No one else around but us, it was windy and overcast, a truley eerie experience.
I likened the sound to tortured souls drifting perpetually between heaven and hell!

This singing ringing tree is located in my home town Burnley, Lancashire in the UK and although it may not look like a tree up close in the distance it resembles a tree and I used to love going for walks up their when I was younger and I can ensure you it is an amazing sight

That sound changes based on the windspeed, so you get something different based entirely on the weather of the day. Imagine the sound in the rain, or with a light breeze. It is really an interesting art piece.
