Ian's mom rubbing her eyes while driving was something I don't think I had ever seen in any animated movie before... These minor details they add subconsciously make us believe in their existence as a real character and thus enriches the overall experience of the story... Loved the breakdown dude, and hoping to see more of these...
Man, I really love how you breakdown and explain the paper movement and skin flex. You dont think about it since we expect that to happen in reality, but as animators we have to purposefully add it in to get that next level of detail. I love this!
Hi Wade, I don't have Disney+ and was wondering about getting it but I have one major question (since I assume you have it). Can you play frame by frame forwards and backwards through their player?
I had to hurry and watch the movie and now it is my favorite AHHH As an animator I'm training I was in AWE of how detailed everything way, how everything was planes out, even the time it took to do this! I love the idea that it went from medieval to modern-val. Barley has to be my favorite because he has that caring, older sibling love for their younger siblings, he doesn't care what people think of what he does, its his personality. The way he is such a dorky nerd with DnD and how excited he is to help Ian is amazing! Pixar did an amazing job on this movie, I literally can't pressure it enough how much I love this movie.
Loved this video, thank you for pointing all of those little animation things that just made everything so much better! made me want to watch this again to see what I can catch. it's amazing how when you watch something like Onward, stuff like this feels very natural. like, "of course they did that", but when you are animating for youself, it can be so hard to think of those little things and include them because it is all so subtle.
Sir Wade. I just started getting interested in 3D Animation recently myself and started doing my own stuff in my room. I really enjoy your videos. It's the perfect mix of information about the technical side of specific movies that I've associated 3D animation with personally and most people here can relate too probably. I mean it's DreamWorks!! and also your personality is so relatable and chill. I feel like I'm hanging out with a cool mentor while he rambles about his favorite things in animation. You have a really great way of talking about things aswell. This video alone has brought so much to my attention that as only a viewer makes watching these movies and shows so much better. Yeah, those things add to the overall movie or show regardless if I specifically notice these small details or not but when you actually open your eyes to them and pay attention. You feel so immersed in the story and world they are in. I love the work you put into these videos and I definitely am going to be around because the value I feel I get from your videos alone is amazing.
17:05 Noo, dont's stop explainig it! It's very interesting to hear about your opinion in this type of actings too :) Loved the video!! I'll watch the movie again and try to look for more of the details. Thank you very much!
I love the subtle movements in his eyes. (8:32) They really bring out the character and makes him look like he's searching for something in his mom's eyes. Also, please do a part two, this was really interesting!
YES! I definitely was a part 2! 6:18 --- "VHS Tape" --- 🤣 ...Okay, sorry. I'm guessing that was just a mistake. I found it funny because I grew up with VHS tapes and cassette tapes (and I still own both!). 🤣
YES again! Could you explain how the shots with writing were done? When he was writing on a piece of paper, and the paper was reacting to it. And when he was writing on his palm. How to animate textures? And also it would be interesting to know abouf emotion transitions in face animation. And about constrains with the rope too :)
Hi Sir Wade! I only recently discovered your channel and I absolutely love your content. Super helpful. I was wondering, have you ever used mocap data as a baseline for animation? I would love a video on this. Thanks!!!
Chris Pratt (playing Barley the older brother) actually used to live in a Van before his career took off, I wonder if he had any direct input on the Van in the movie?
I would absolutely LOVE to see how the writing on the paper was setup. I've been thinking about it through the entire video upon seeing the shot. Still can't figure it out. But hopefully I might find out!
Yes. I wanna see all of the story opinions, how you'd animate writing on a page, character interactions, how to animate characters influencing the environment (props reacting) etc ALL OF IT. I WANT IT ALL! haha love your work wade, thanks as always for the great content!
Would love to listen about the story-aspect of the movie and more on!You are such a good mentor I'v ever seen.I m a student of 3D Animation from India & I really insprired by your way of conveying the tips & tricks to move forward. Wish to be a good animator & to meet you also! Thanks a lot!
Oh my god I'm so glad you pointed out the jiggling of the triceps when Barley claps his hands over his head. That's the best piece of character anim in the whole movie. It's absolutely unbelievable. There's even the slightest SSS in his arm skin indicating the layer of fat over the muscle. INSANE!!!
That scene of the manticore i saved it in my personal facial acting folder, seconds after i saw her haha. This film has a lot of very very good facial acting, well and the film is amazing in general.
I like the point you made on the lipsync for the word "good". I think the one thing I'd have touched on next to what you'd mentioned was that he also closes his mouth into a neutral smile straight as he finishes speaking, which feels a tad unnatural as well as giving the lipsync a feeling of the word ending with an "mm" sound.
I love your analysis of the scenes, very interesting, helps to understand the logic of the way the scene has been thought and edited, for my part if you make more videos of this style I will be present at each new video you will release, it is obvious that you know your stuff, i like this kind of content very much, very instructive, keep going that way
Very cool video. I did miss some of these details while watching the movie while it everything felt so great in the movie. Thanks for sharing these videos :D
I really like that you´re making this kinds of videos trying to study a little bit shots and actings. Maybe next time choose an old movie so you don't have to worry about spoilers. And just choose a couple or three shots so you can really dive in in all the things you can learn from it. Just one little note. A lot of things you bring attention to (like paper bending when pressed, and muscles or skin shaking) are great, but most of the time are not really something an animator may end up doing, (even though there are ways to do it, of course). At least not in my experience. Not sure if they do it this way in this kind of movies, but in vfx (where I work at least) those details probably will be a thing anim tech department will add after the shot is approved. And the muscle thing, yeah, if you have the controls for deformations you can add it to your animation, but that can also be a dynamics pass over the action of real muscle built in the rig. There are a lot of departments involved in how a shot looks. And it is true that the more flavour you add to your personal shots the better chances you get to deliver what you want. But I´d recomend focusing in having the animation as good as you can first. And don´t stress too much on renders, or set dressing, or effects that you can add later. (Is just that I keep seeing people doing all this kinds of presentation things to their shots, and when you look at the animation it doesn´t look that good. So, in my opinion, if you want to focus in animation, it´s a bit of a waste of time to do everything else) Also, want to remind people that all you see in a shot doesn´t come from just one person. Usually you meet with your lead and supevisor, and they´ll give you notes to improve the shot. And it takes a lot of time to get these approved. So don´t get discouraged if you think you´re not in that level. Very little people are, and you will always have the help of your superiors to make the shot the best it can be.
Watching an animation with an animator is like watching The Good Doctor series with a doctor or it's like listening to steve jobs when he talks about his newly released product. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us
Everytime I hear about Pixar I can't help but think about the time they accidentally deleted Toy Story 2, work their ass off to recover it, then delete it again to start over from scratch.
I watch your videos a lot and I'm not quite ready when it comes to animation. The thing I struggle with is right in keeping with the kind of animation you've been showing about, especially when you were talking about how to make your animations look better. I find myself struggling with shading characters when it comes to NPR --especially when it comes to tooney skin that's not cell shaded. I hope you'll share with us a resource or two about how to get this kind of a look going in Maya. I hope that's not too far off topic, but it's something I'm currently trying to work out and there don't seem to be a lot of resources towards teaching that --at least I haven't found many.
Nice work Sir Wade for me ink smudges and the torn hoodie and moms cutting with scissors, that was dope. what you doing in this video I call it FLOSSING! Pixar was flossing to Dream works and the rest of the animation studios lol
What’s pretty crazy is that the writing stuff is also translated. I watched it with the English soundtrack but (somewhat annoyingly) Disney+ still gave me the localised version of the film which meant he was writing notes in Finnish.
Thanks for the video! I love how much attention to detail there is in this movie! Can you please talk about how to animate fast moving characters like the dragon? Thanks :)
hi Sir Wade, the way you see pixar's animation is so great and hit on the spot. can i make a request from you to review an animation from gibli studio? like Grave on firefly? i know you will be like "WHAT? AN ANIME? thats not my cup of tea!!" but trust me... it aint a mainstream anime, if a big studio like pixar workflow "they are telling a big and rich story, then adding a detail in it" studio gibli is the opposite, "they are telling an ordinary story not so dense, but adding a great big detail of human behaviour, even things that didn't move in it." im just curious, but from i see u seeing things... u will definitely like it, but im maybe wrong, will you took that chance? thanks.
Hey Sir! Thanks for the video! It was super interesting! 😀 Something I notice on the very last clip, check Ian's right hand when he is on the floor. It looks like it's floating 😯
I thought about the handwriting a lot as well.. My guess was that they handwrote all of the text and then animated a null or controller to travel along the path which they parented the end of the pens to. It would be a fairly simple Houdini set up, but I'm dog shit at animating so that's just my fx artist approach I came up with
The "lip sync off" thing in the last clip for me is kind of a win, makes me remember tom holland instantly, just beacause the way the mouth and the head moves
Concerning the irregularities on the street, is the visual development artist aware that the animation department is going to animate the car reacting to the ground? Or are they decided only in the animation process? Does the concept artist have to know it before? and to know if the budget would allow for the extra work (to give that bounce and effect)?
Hi my name is Justin Weaver I just finished grad school at Depaul in Chicago I had a question have you ever tried to do those kind of facts like making things move in a realistic way in to the 2d Animation
Hey this tilak here from India ... This is really great which i look into the video like u analysis every detail......... I would love if uh analysis in story and shots aspect.... thank you..

Definitely all of Barley's performances, Chris Pratt adds so much to this movie!

Hi Wade, I don't have Disney+ and was wondering about getting it but I have one major question (since I assume you have it). Can you play frame by frame forwards and backwards through their player?
I'd love to see the pen and paper setup.
Loooved this animation analysis, you kicked butt :)
Y'all cute as hell
“TAKE THAT BUZZFEED!”
I think it would be really cool to see how paper and writing works in animation!
Would also be cool to go over rope animation and constraints!!
I had to hurry and watch the movie and now it is my favorite AHHH
As an animator I'm training I was in AWE of how detailed everything way, how everything was planes out, even the time it took to do this! I love the idea that it went from medieval to modern-val. Loved the video!! I'll watch the movie again and try to look for more of the details. Thank you very much!
2:37 This shot looks a lot like a shot from "Spring" (The Blender 3D open movie project) IMO. The color palette and layout are very similar.
I watched it yesterday, it makes you tear not like coco but still the catharsis is huge,I love it a lot.
I love the subtle movements in his eyes. (8:32) They really bring out the character and makes him look like he's searching for something in his mom's eyes.
Also, please do a part two, this was really interesting!
Yeah a part two with spoilers would be cool.
YES! I definitely was a part 2!
6:18 --- "VHS Tape" --- 🤣 ...Okay, sorry. I'm guessing that was just a mistake. I found it funny because I grew up with VHS tapes and cassette tapes (and I still own both!). 🤣
lol was just typing that same thing >
Record radio music....
Musik....."Aaaaand"
🤬
No-ones going to talk about how Sir Wade made his set have a "magical" feel to it, utilizing the same color scheme from Onward?!
It was no joke my favorite movie of all time. Super under rated. Especially if you know the story behind why the writer pitched it.
YES again! Could you explain how the shots with writing were done? When he was writing on a piece of paper, and the paper was reacting to it. And when he was writing on his palm. How to animate textures? And also it would be interesting to know abouf emotion transitions in face animation. And about constrains with the rope too :)
My dad and I loved a particular scene with the van that was hilarious! How they were able to put so much personification into a vehicle is amazing!
I need a part 2!!! This blew my mind! Love your channel!
these points were really great! the little things really add that realism and connection to the viewer
I would absolutely LOVE to see how the writing on the paper was setup. I've been thinking about it through the entire video upon seeing the shot. Still can't figure it out. But hopefully I might find out!
Absolutely try to recreate some of these! Things that are simple you take for granted like paper reacting to writing.
Loved this animation analysis! I'd love some more about the details of how they did stuff for the film! Excited for more!!
Yes. I wanna see all of the story opinions, how you'd animate writing on a page, character interactions, how to animate characters influencing the environment (props reacting) etc ALL OF IT. I WANT IT ALL! haha
love your work wade, thanks as always for the great content!
I like the idea of trying to recreate effects. Really it doesn't matter what you choose... it's all interesting.
loving the breakdown, would it be possible to talk about how you would approach a rope pulling sequence, and go into the technicalities?
thank you!
Would love to listen about the story-aspect of the movie and more on!You are such a good mentor I'v ever seen.I m a student of 3D Animation from India & I really insprired by your way of conveying the tips & tricks to move forward. Wish to be a good animator & to meet you also! Thanks a lot!

Once again great job on picking up on the details... another car detail that I quite liked was the screwdriver gear shifter😂
Great video Wade! Thanks for pointing out all these amazing details from this awesome Pixar movie!
The pen finger constraint would make a great tutorial
Definitely looking forward to a part two breakdown, getting into the story!

The pawnshop in the movie has the character name COREY 12:58 i.e from TV history 18 tv show Pawnstars... :-) so much minute detail...love it...
Please make a part 2!! Loved this video :)
I love your analysis of the scenes, very interesting, helps to understand the logic of the way the scene has been thought and edited, for my part if you make more videos of this style I will be present at each new video you will release, it is obvious that you know your stuff, i like this kind of content very much, very instructive, keep going that way
Watched this movie yesterday, perfect timing Sir :)
Would love a part 2, as well as similar videos of other movies! Thanks for this video!!
Sounds like you have so much more to add that would include spoilers so part 2 would be so awesome!!
Great video! I would love to see another Video about Onward.
Very cool video. I did miss some of these details while watching the movie while it everything felt so great in the movie. Thanks for sharing these videos :D
Would love to see a part 2 - awesome job!! PS - Cassette tape, not VHS tape. ;)

This is an amazing breakdown for aspiring animators.
Thank you!
Watching an animation with an animator is like watching The Good Doctor series with a doctor or it's like listening to steve jobs when he talks about his newly released product. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us
Hey Sir Wade. Could you do a video talking about how to use IK fingers? Do you have an existing video covering that?
Thats an awesome video dude! enjoyed it so much!
Everytime I hear about Pixar I can't help but think about the time they accidentally deleted Toy Story 2, work their ass off to recover it, then delete it again to start over from scratch.
Animation reviews like this of animation movies and shorts from your perspective. I would love to see them.

Really enjoyed this, and look forward to seeing this movie now!! :-) Greetings from Norway
Thanks for the video! I love how much attention to detail there is in this movie!
Can you please talk about how to animate fast moving characters like the dragon? Thanks :)
Second part please !!! Thanks Sir Wade
I love your channel and I'm so glad I found it. I will watch every one of these hungrily.
hi Sir Wade, the way you see pixar's animation is so great and hit on the spot.
can i make a request from you to review an animation from gibli studio? like Grave on firefly? i know you will be like "WHAT? Hey Sir! Thanks for the video! It was super interesting! 😀 Something I notice on the very last clip, check Ian's right hand when he is on the floor. It looks like it's floating 😯
Oh look at that! I didn't catch that, you're right! Looks like either a stray key on the IK hand or maybe a key on the IK > FK match? Good eye!! :)
16:20 that Seems like Jack Black's facial expressions (School Of Rock and Tenacious D acting)
I'm glad I found this channel
There's no way they get paid enough for this, the attention to detail is insane.
Pls make a part 2 pls this is very helpful also for educational animating stuff thank u for all of your opinions
how would do like a person writing with a pen? can you make as a video
I'm so late to the party but I'd absolutely love a part 2!
I loved every second of this video ❤️
I thought about the handwriting a lot as well.. My guess was that they handwrote all of the text and then animated a null or controller to travel along the path which they parented the end of the pens to. It would be a fairly simple Houdini set up, but I'm dog shit at animating so that's just my fx artist approach I came up with
1:34 DAMN IT!!! I feel so stupid... Why did I never notice Wall-E made the actual Apple startup "Bong" When he was done charging 😶
The "lip sync off" thing in the last clip for me is kind of a win, makes me remember tom holland instantly, just beacause the way the mouth and the head moves
Concerning the irregularities on the street, is the visual development artist aware that the animation department is going to animate the car reacting to the ground? Hello! I’m completely new to animation. What is the best software to download and get started on? Thanks
Because they follow Emotional storyline and Realistic animation yet artistic approach...
I would love to see part 2 of onward where you explain about characters
Hi my name is Justin Weaver I just finished grad school at Depaul in Chicago I had a question have you ever tried to do those kind of facts like making things move in a realistic way in to the 2d Animation
I'd like to see the giggly arms when he is pointing out the bird beak in a tutorial
I really like the editing😁😁
Do you have any videos on lip syncing to a song or wav file?
being perfect about imperfection is such a perfection.
yeah I am not really a native English speaker.
The personification of the van was great...not getting into spoiler territory.
What software they are using to make this animation ?
Hey this tilak here from India ...
This is really great which i look into the video like u analysis every detail.........
I would love if uh analysis in story and shots aspect....
thank you..
13:35 that face is priceless
Hi, I have a question beside this content here. I'm looking for a 3D asset database for all the model and even project files and also the rendered files. Do you have any advice for me? What did Dreamworks use for organizing their stuff?
Thank you!
What was the drawing you used in your thumbnail?
I'm literally gonna go and pay for Disney+ to watch this movie now because of you lol
Does their dragon have any bones!?
would love to see the pen and paper stuff.
Just a question, which is faster than going through all the animated movies myself to check this 😂 But Is this the first, or one of the first, animated movie to incorporate such amazing detail? (Like the writing on the paper and the hand, for example)
i thought i was the only one able to locate the extra detail that wasnt needed but is still neccesary
Amazing
Those who like this legends' videos are really legends!
i think the staff might be a nod to Blenders open movie "Spring"! :o) @ 9:21
pen andpaper tutorial would be great when i saw the movie i was like geez that is impressive seeing him write
How do you animate writing on a paper ?
Hey wade make tutorial on how to write on paper...
one thing that is kinda breaking blockbuster CGI animation for me is huge difference between quality of the world and characters... It sticks out in Frozen 2, where humanoid type people are very cartoony meanwhile all environments and objects looks so hipper realistic... something is off.
*top quality video. You Deserve More Subs!! ❗️👌*
