    Is upgrading a 2010 iMac worth it?
    In this video I fully upgrade my Mid 2010 21.5" iMac.
    It certainly wasn't the easiest upgrade I've done... unless you count the heatsink hack I had to do to put a quad core CPU in my Dell laptop.
    On a future video about this iMac I will sort out the backlight and cooling issues, possibly even upgrade to Monterey.

    My apologies for the terrible sound!
    I have a good microphone and a mac mini now which is silent, so proper audio in future videos.
    The upgraded 2010 iMac is good, but runs hot and has very loud fans.

      @@nicolasarenas8988 No unfortunately, at the moment its in my workshop and I use it rarely as I don't have working internet yet.
      It may work just find in a colder climate, but here where it can reach 40C its not going to be happy.
      A 2nd fan could be added near the hard drive or in place of the DVD drive, there is room available, but maybe the backlight inverter could be replaced with something more energy efficient, I don't know.

    Nice guide!!!But I have a question, how to choose thickness of thermal pad for k2000m?1mm or 2mm?

    • @FixTechStuff
      @FixTechStuff  2 года назад +1

      I think I used 2mm, but I personally would buy both sizes if I did it again, because some of it seemed to be too thick despite squashing it.

    Is this upgrade good for a videographer? 4K Video and Abode Packesge?

    • @FixTechStuff
      @FixTechStuff  2 года назад +1

      I can't say for sure as I haven't tried it, but no. It may handle it, but without the PWM brightness mod the backlight inverter runs full power, generating more heat than necessary and it runs very hot under load.
      Edited for clarification.

      @@QuinnLiu GTX 1050 will not work at all. There is no vBIOS for it, and you will always get a black screen on boot. The best route is NVIDIA Kepler (GTX 600, 700, 800, Quadro K1000-5000), or AMD HD 7000 - Polaris.

      You're really going to have to look at the stats, those both appear to be 82 watts, and I'm guessing the performance difference is negligible. Maybe a benchmarking site will be the best way forward, find a compatible chip with lower wattage and see if its performance is acceptable.

    For that money you get yourself an iMac 2017 with a bit of patience and a 2015 any day. And I speak about a 27" model. And you have way better CPU, 4 GB GPU, retina screen and if not already equiped with 32 GB RAM you still have money to buy. (And the 2017 accepts cheaper DDR4 and also can go up to 64 GB.) Maybe you wont have 1 TB SSD, but you already will have an SSD in it (no need to buy) and if you want more storage you have USB and Thunderbolt for a fast connection external drive.
    Then you also will not have the thermal problems of the thick iMacs.
    Not even upgrading the 2011 model will make it worth.

    • @FixTechStuff
      @FixTechStuff  2 года назад +1

      Yes these are things people need to weigh up when deciding on this path.
      Keep in mind the base cost minus RAM and SSD was only AUD$244.
      AUD$583 won't buy you a 2015 or 2017 mac with a $183 SSD and 16GB of RAM. You can see at the end of the video my option was the cheaper one, at least here in Australia. The price on used Apple products is ridiculous.
      For someone like me with limited funds it is definitely the easier and most affordable option.
      To keep total costs down 8GB and a 256GB SSD would also perform just as well.
      I agree with you mostly, it isn't the best way forward... unless you happen to have or have bought a $100 iMac and decide to spend the $144 on extras and see what happens.
      End result it was a fun project, it performed well, I used it for 6 months, currently in the process of handing it down to my father who doesn't use a computer for hours on end like me so it will suit him fine.
      The negatives are in the climate I live in, during summer it runs hot and the fans are loud. One extra I never bothered with, but highly recommend is a PWM module or another solution to adjust backlight brightness.
