@@kristopherthompson1342 absolutely agree with you. However, I think apples recycling center is based around recycling tech, and not exactly the items that keep your tech safe while in transit lol
@Little James perhaps because it was sent across country lines, to someone who was gonna review it, so they wanted to make suit arrived perfectly safe. Or, because it's a newer product, and maybe the recyclable materials are made to order for certain dimensions/sizes and they hadn't done that yet? Unsure. But it is a good question.
@homegrowntwinkie - That is a good point. I didn’t consider international shipping for these Canucks. Also, Apple opening a recycling center doesn’t send mixed messages to me; it sounds like they are countering the carbon footprint for taxes, morals, etc.
@@homegrowntwinkie Not true. Every iMac comes packaged like this in its original box, regardless of the shipping destination and recipient.
Protecting the product they're shipping also matters. Jeez. If they went to slightly thinner packaging and 2% of iMacs broke on shipping, and had to be replaced they didn't help the carbon footprint, because they'd have to make more imacs and ship them to those customers. @@kristopherthompson1342

Please tell me. How is a 32" 4k monitor closer to a 27" 5k monitor than a 27" 4k monitor?
hint:

If he had put in the actual comparable panel, it'd cost about the same 1200 bucks. 5K panels are nowhere near the price of 4K panels and they do provide a very significant improvement in scaling. I'm typing this on a 4k 27" and i absolutely hate it. It's too small at 1:1, too large at 1:2 and anything in between looks terrible.

4:08 "It's a good thing Apple is big on OpenCL"
Apple deprecated OpenCL.
Mac33 Right. It’s Metal now.
But we have Metal and MoltenVK. It's fine. OpenCL is a dinosaur anyways.
They have some proprietary shit API that Apple is forcing down everybody's throat so it's all fine.
@@whydoihavetodothisannoying ...that works amazingly well!
That would be logical if Metal was actually better, as Apple know exactly for which hardware they have to optimize it.
Can we talk about the fact that you need to get one of the higher priced models to even get an SSD? The other ones use a 5400 rpm laptop HDD... Which is just plain sad!
Well it’s a fusion drive for the 27 inches at least
It's a fusion drive so it has an SSD and the 5400 rpm drive. I understand it's basically their version of Intel optane
Do your research mate:
1) You can upgrade to a 256GB SSD for a fairly decent price given the quality of Apple's SSDs, even on the lowest 2019 model. The price of the upgrade includes a great SSD, stellar customer support and snappy returns, something you don't get (from my own personal experience) when custom building a PC (individual part returns will cost you your entire system for the duration of the part's absence, which for me, at least when I had parts replaced, took upwards of 2-3 weeks).
2) Even though an 5400rpm hard drive isn't great by today's standards, MacOSs OS-level method of grabbing files still makes the experience tolerable, unlike on Windows, where anything less than an SSD is completely unbearable. Linux is still a great option for snappy file retrieval on the PC side of things, however.
3) A 2.5" HDD isn't a laptop HDD. That's just pure misinformation. Smaller HDDs are favoured in builds that don't have a lot of space. They are frequently used in mATX and MiniPC builds. Since there are space limitations due to the width of the iMac, a 2.5" HDD is a better option.
Conor Curley Why not sata ssd option? People can not notice even if it’s not nvme ssd. Apple nvme ssd is four times expensive than sata ssd. We have only two option. Terrible speed hdd fusion drive or Crazy expensive apple ssd.

Non-upgradable hardware (ram doesn't count) is not "good" and contributes to e-waste
weastie87 thx for not acting a child about topics related to apple
"If you want that hardware, Macs are generally not that expensive" and the resale value is insane compared to Windows/PC which makes em even cheaper long term.
It's the other way around. They're not upgradable, so with a PC you only need to resell individual hardware, presumably CPU and GPU at most, which still net you decent prices as well.
@@Thornskade I usually resell my MacBook Pros for 50-80% of what I paid, depending on how long I keep it. With refurbs (basically new MBPs for a few hundred bucks off) I end up getting a whole new MBP every few years for only a few hundred bucks. I like this, great when you do work that uses a lot of resources across the board. For me upgrading parts at a time is no good, I need new everything and this makes it easy.
@@jordansarkisian You don't need new everything, but keep teelling yourself that if you want. Not sure where you're finding the idiots buying used computers for 80% but that's kinda sad.
The other side of the coin, of course, is the fact that you can buy used computer parts for much cheaper, so if you're going through the process of selling your used hardware for 80% with MacBooks you might as well go on a bargain hunt and get a powerful computer for cheap.
@@Thornskade I don't want used, and for editing every part of the system can use the boost in hardware usually. That's where all the issue and conflict arrises with these debates.
@@jordansarkisian No quite. "I don't want used" is not an argument, and in general what you seem to be getting at with the "our ways don't work with each other" is that you're talking from a purely subjective perspective. Indeed, objectivity is a requirement for debates to work.

You only have to charge it like once a month for like 20 minutes if that so charge while you go off for lunch and you‘re good to go
But you have to charge it like only once a month and it only takes a hour to fully charge. And that if you use your mac for like 10 hours per day.
They don't want you to plug it in all the time because it uses their standard charging cable so it would probably wear out really fast.
it is intentional, they dont want people to use it like a normal mouse
Okay guys but it's still bad design, for the one fact you still can't use the mouse when it's being charged. There's no escaping that fact.
Wow. Been so long since I’ve seen a positive Apple review on this channel
I'm always hesitant with these videos. It sometimes comes across disingenuous because 99% of the time he is bashing Apple. This one though, no lol.
Gigabit is “2005-level network speeds?” Yeuch.
network
not internet
Wow was not going to buy it thinking that it’d overpriced and can get better performance for cheaper using Windows.
You changed my opinion, definitely going for an iMac now.
P.S. I already bought it
So...
the main part why it isn't that expensive and overpriced is that there are only a few 5k displays out there and intels i9 series (with a mainboard) is f expensive. Build a pc with a ryzen 2700x and a normal 4k screen and save 500$
Still overpriced, still has an AMD GPU which is a joke for anyone that actually needs GPU acceleration, and then there's the compatibility issues.
@@oBCHANo How is having an amd gpu bad for applications needing gpu acceleration? There are very few programs out there that actually need CUDA. Have you ever heard of opencl and metal?
MHWGamer I don’t have a good experience with windows hence have no problem spending a few dollars more for a different platform.
Also I already use Apple the phone is an iPhone and the tablet is an iPad, and the continuity is a blessing
@Carson W234 Every major GPU renderer uses CUDA, video editing acceleration often has CUDA, and when it's opencl being used Nvidia has the same performance. If you need GPU acceleration Nvidia is the default, there's no question. It's why everyone in my industry has dumped their Mac. Even 10 years from now something like Metal will be an afterthought as long as Nvidia continues to make CUDA the superior platform.
Note the user accessible SO-DIMM slots are only supported on the 27" model. The 21.5" model is factory configured 8/16/32 GB only.
Apple really needs to fix this magic mouse issue. true... i charge it like once a month, but when i need to charge it, i also need to use it
Buy a real mouse like the MX Master.
6:24 so it looks like apple managed to tame the beast😉😉
Am i the only person who likes the bezels? I don't like chunky bezels, but the flat integrated apple bezels are actually really immersive and i find keep the content of the displayed focused, especially in full-screen mode and i love it for movies as the black bars transition into them. i don't like when bezels are non-existent and you have a lot going on on-screen and in the background of the display.
P.S.: this comes from someone who owns a macbook but at work i work on a regular third-party display
7:50
Look how easy it is to order replacement PC parts
Not to mention you could easily save ~250-300 on motherboard/keyboard/mouse/videocard/cpu cooler. The imac can barely cool the 9900k and you know the motherboard they have in there is no where near as good as the 250 dollar board they have picked out. Shit, you could save a hundred just on the motherboard. I built a 9700k/rtx2080 for 500 less than what they are showing.
that list of items to match up against the mac were just picked to get to 2700
Some products cost more for simple additions, I'm sure Linus picked out the cheapest hardware that's actually the same as what's in the iMac. Look at the items on the list, they're the same as the specs in the iMac
SP R The only significant difference is the 4K display vs a 5k display, but I think the price is relatively similar to the $1200-1300 that he has listed in the specs.
Finally, someone who actually does the work to figure out that Macs aren't overpriced and it's really hard to beat their price by building your own comparable Pc. but no on listens or believes basically bc Macs are too pretty to not be overpriced.
Gosh i hate 360p
But i love LINUS
no homo
Well, that is RUclips's fault. They never show off shows the moment they are uploaded at 1080p or 4k...if you are one of those people.
@@Qardo correct me if I'm wrong but can't they wait to make the video public once the whole thing is rendered in all resolutions?
Sry 1080p
@@James.Stark.Ben.Edition dunno, but I can't even understand the rant. It takes a pretty long time to render lets say 4k video. They are just going to lose viewers if they waited for all resolutions. If I was just going to sleep for example, if this video came up later, probably never would have seen it.
Linus Tech Tips: the only RUclips channel to still upload with black bars in 2019
a big part of the heat in the imacs is mechanical hardrives cause alot of the heat to build up .. i went to an SSD in my late 2013 imac 27 inch 3.2 ghz quadcore and it runs faster and the temps are so low now that i have yet to hear my fan even comeon yet even under intense loads so id say its a win ..i kid you not my imac use to run rather hot and would bog down alot and the fan would come on a few times a day now its awesome so no complaints here its like a new compter with only 1 change being the harddrive is now gone and now its on a SSD drive
guys a new channel is coming up "ilinus"
RUclips's been really slow with it's conversions lately.
Everyone thinks they're "early" which is why it's still 360p...
I won’t be able to unsee those bezels anymore. Thanks Linus.
Check with Louis Rossman, he may have something to say. 🤔
check out selection bias. guy thrives on it.

T2 chip
why do you youtubers always review the model that most people are not going to buy? im more interested in the performance of the entry level imac for the average user who are not video editors
I think the DST 5 port + XTX50 combo is a better deal than the XTX200. For roughly the same price you get the swivel and a 5th port at the top of the first stage and the same features minus the bling on the second. Now you end up with similar features as the Scubapro set but for a little less money.
Granted you have to put in the hose yourself but I prefer choosing hose lengths myself anyway. And since you don't need a weird spanner it's easy.
Apple doesn't have "if it aint broke don't fix it" approach, they have the "if it broke you should not fix it and you should by a new one from us again" approach.
Hm, no Quicksync and no T2 either, which takes that role in other macs. That must mean there's situations where the previous model with Quicksync is faster, plus T2 macs on exports.
tipoomaster It has Quick Sync and IGPU, Linus doesnt know nothing.
@@josethemacho Even the i9?
This is what I've been saying! Imacs are neck and neck with building your own pc with the same specs.. Especially when you include a 5k monitor!
Recorded in 8K.
360P
feelsbad
Timeless designs have something I really like: you can buy the first iMac and everyone would thing you have the latest one!
Bill Xylogiannopoulos That’s not true the old iMac is much thicker
@@slimestoneexpert9804 A 2011 iMac looks really similar, though.
Βασίλης Ξυλογιαννόπουλος yeah but is ssooooo much thicker
2021 iMac: Now let’s do the opposite of people want.
They couldn’t even make the mac pro upgradable let alone imac.
Yay it's no longer 360p.. wait it's 480p -.-
Black bars are so distracting. TVs and majority of monitors, along with YT catalogue, is 16:9. 🤨
But browsing and multi tasking just feels so nice on a taller display. I tried using MB Pro for a week and I really want my next laptop to be either 16:10 or 3:2
Looks great on s9+
The bezels are fine as is, having a black border around content helps keep focus and allows for better judgement of colour, which is important when making something aimed at creatives. Not that any creative with any sense is buying Apples garbage any more.
Motherboard $260
RAM $100
GPU $ 160
Monitor $1,300
PSU $60
Case $50
Linus: someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying
Me: Spend less on monitors
Linus: no
yeah right $1,300 for a Monitor when i have seen $400~$600 Monitor's do well
It’s because the monitor inside the iMac is a 5k P3 color gamut ad. sustained 500 nits of brightness.
@@twistedoracle1144 Just a joke man. I am aware that the Mac monitors can cure cancer/prevent Alzheimer's/walk your dog.
"You know what rubs me the right way...?" OKAY TMI Linus TMI.
Thanks for all the great videos - here’s my questions , buy a 27” iMac 2019 version or wait for the 2020 version and any news when it will come out 2020/2021
it knida came out
2700US so like 6 grand Canadian. I can build 3 high end systems for that.
David Walter Rhinelander Please, I'd like to know where I can get 6k Canadian dollars for $2700 usd.
Rob827 hahaha. I was exaggerating. More like almost 4 grand.
Including 3 5K displays?
"staggering 128 GB of RAM"
*laughs in Mac Pro with 1.5 TB*
2:24 Agree with the bezels comment, disagree with the chin bar comment. Chin bar looks great and would look even better if the display had no bezels.
"You know what rubs me the right way? Our sponsor!" ... that's a little TMI there, Linus
7:30 WOAH MONITOR and prices are higher than it could be
Its hard to even find monitors that compare to the display in the higher end imacs without shopping professional grade monitors. The displays on imacs are very, very good. That doesn't come cheap.
I have the 2011 Imac and it is a great computer but Apple does need to get rid of the bezels and the chin bar and deliver an all screen computing experience, maybe even giving the Imac a curve screen will really make the computer look next gen. I won't be getting another Mac till the bezels gets smaller because my Imac looks the same as the ones on sale right now.
