They were talking about in his life of constantly having this chip on his shoulder of thinking he needs to be the best of the best, training rigorously nonstop, and never thinking he’s enough despite being one of the most athletic in the world. Always trying to prove something to the world. I also remember him mentioning how miserable all that success ended up making him feel. This is who Ding reminds me of. When you say something went "not great", it usually means it went somewhat "bad". NOT SO HAPPY has a slight negative meaning in my opinion, which is a bit misleading, whereas as mixed is exactly as is -- there are clearly some happy thoughts but it's also tempered with the weight and considerations for what it might mean for his future.
