These days, these SK-88s go for about the same price as their SC Rack and PC equivalents. If you're looking to do retro composition... kinda hard to beat it.
I love the history lesson and the fun jams. I wonder how many game soundtracks feature sounds/songs that are made with the same sounds on this Roland 🤔
Someone I know is selling one of these in good condition for 100 bucks! I think it's a steal at the price and will go well with my setup that I put together specifically for making video game music! Thanks for this video!
Something comes to mind when I think about an instrument like this: as somebody who likes electronic sounds and sound design, sometimes I just want to hear something like a string section or choir. And at times like that it’s sometimes nice just to push a button with the word “strings” or “choir” above it.
Interesting insights. The sk 88 PRO sounds like virtually any home arranger keyboard except it has more effects and sequencing functionality than some. You show how it was made to fulfill a need at the time it reached the market which may have justified its price. It would fit well in Yamaha's Reface series. I feel like rambling but will be kind and cut it short. Let's just say this video inspires thoughts about vintage sounds, whether or not gear is designed for the past or designed to push the envelope into the future. Also, for those with limited resources, how to get old dogs to do new tricks. Thanks.
Everytime I see a video like this I get a strange feeling of: Great! A new piece of gear I can look out for! Oh, now multiple people are making videos, and now a whole bunch of other people see them too and they won't be as cheap, but that's how I found this thing in the first place. Anyways, great video! Very well made and informative, can't wait to not be able to afford it!
To the best of my knowledge, it's for routing audio through, so if you were using the SK-88 Pro as a MIDI controller, you can send audio through it so all the sound goes through one device.
It was for vintage PC gaming setups of the time. Older games supported sending MIDI out instead of audio. You would put your PC's audio through the RCA as a sort of "pass through" for an all-in-one way to mix the device's audio with your desktop audio, without having to buy a mixer.
Hi Josh, would you think of making a tutorial on how make a sample pack for the op-1. Or can you sell or share some of these samples for the OP-1. Ill be happy to purchase them :)
How can you factory setting this sk 88 Pro roland keyboard. I'm having issues with the buttons. Can you Please make a tutorial video of how to factory setting this keyboard. I really Appreciate it if you can help. Thanks
Try holding down the right instrument button before powering it on. Or when powered up hold down the select button and press the right instrument button to do a GS reset, then press the SC-55 MAP button to execute.
Thanks for this great video about the SK88 Pro. My late husband had one, purchased in 1999; I have it now. I'm looking to sell it, and would like to attach a link to this RUclips so people can understand what it is and what it sounds like. Hope you're OK with that. Please let me know.
Dont sound to bad despite being so old but I think Yamaha has a more memorable place in 80s or vintage synth keyboards due to sharing the Adlb Ym3812 chip used with which some of the most sold computers of all time.
The sound of this unit reminds me of Martin Gore’s early solo stuff, especially “counterfeit” I expect to hear him start singing “Compulsion” ruclips.net/video/PcKkuiOcsaU/видео.htmlsi=BJWkwSokSKsfsfsr

Really loving the positivity of the channel.
I also love GM probably because of the video games I grew up on!
Thank you!
And it's fun how general MIDI really gets those nostalgia gears turning!
Lets go king, spread the good word. The bottle blow Mario 64 riff, I had no idea it was in there. Great work!
Thanks so much, man. Gotta spread the gospel of the SK-88 Pro.
Look at the stuntman with his elbow shaking the entire desk with a tall glass of water begging to get knocked over onto his laptop. Great vid, man!
Thank you! And what can I say? I live on the edge.
The feline urge to knock over a glass of water

This was so good...really enjoyed this one!!!

Nice video, Josh! Nice new space, too.
I enjoyed the history lesson. I particularly like the string and choir sounds.
Thank you! Yeah, those choir sounds have a fun vibe.

Not sure if i missed it, but are you able to load/store samples in this keyboard? Great video!
Great video Josh! Check out the album Unrest by Rei Harakami from 1998 made entirely on the SC-88 Pro.
Thank you! And I gave it a listen after seeing your comment, it's very cool.
Glad you enjoyed it! Its a personal favorite. It made me get the SC-88 Pro :)
Nice one
Hi... I'm also using that one. Very nice and good I love it. Thank you.

Thank you! And it's funny you bring up the Reface keyboards, it almost feels like a "Sound Canvas Reface" before that would've been a thing.

That's how I feel after seeing a Bad Gear video. Now a hidden gem isn't so hidden. And thank you!
@@JoshIsMakingMusic Oh yeah, Bad Gear has certainly added and removed items from my bucket list. Keep doing what you're doing!
I saw in pictures that this has RCA in, does that go through the effects? if not what is it for?

That's alright with me! Thank you for asking so nicely.
I've been paying attention to that glass of water the whole time O_O I was scared it would fall down haha
The glass of water will not be a recurring character, lol.

What keyboards used the SID chip? never heard of that happening. They shared FM chips with soundcards though
@@JorbLovesGear apparently Elektron made one called the SidStation in the 90s, not sure how iconic that was though.
