    The all new Ford F-150 lightning is an expensive Electric Pickup Truck. In today’s video we are going to figure out exactly what it costs to operate an EV Pickup Truck, and we will compare that to the operating costs of a Gas Burning F-150 with an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). We are going to analyze the cost of electricity and find out exactly what it will cost to charge your Electric Truck from home! We take a look at the cost of gasoline compared to an electric F-150. Most importantly we are going to take a look at the break even point for purchasing the F-150 Lightning! In other words how many years do you need to own a lightning for it to pay for itself?

    yet we still have to consider, the upfront purchase price of the new truck, the question of longevity (will it last 10 years and if it does, what kind of condition will the electric motors, chargers, and batteries be in), and also what will be the trade in or re-sell value of an ev in 10 years? Lots of unknowns and it takes more than 10 years to recoup that particular fuel savings.. add in the additional time wasted waiting on charging (since it takes wayyyy longer to charge than it does to fill up with gas), since time is money.. sooo many more factors to consider than just fuel prices when it comes to switching.. they'll get there, but it's gotta make financial sense, both for the future and the present..

    • @donkeykong315
      @donkeykong315 Год назад

      Charging time only matters if you plan to drive near or over the range. Lowest range of the eF150s is 240mi, but lets say you are pessimistic about battery life so -15% by end of life gives you 204mi range. Should be able to comfortably drive 3 hours in any direction at that range. That’s not perfect for people that travel a lot but, for me, all my family is within that drive range. The only time I’m traveling farther is going to be for vacation or something, so not super common.
      Another factor not mentioned here is oil changes. Isn’t super expensive but you recoup some of that cost from oil as well, especially if you’re someone that likes using full synthetic.
      Biggest blindspot I see is that when you do eventually need maintenance, how does that compare and at what milages does it tend to happen.

      The battery does not last 10 years and the replacement battery cost $25000. When traveling, charging can cost up to $40 per basic fast charge. The cost benefits aren't conclusive. I want an EV but even Ford top mechanics are not sold on the EV concept.

    • @MBergyman
      @MBergyman 2 года назад +1

      @@paulnorman8548 "The battery does not last 10 years" - there is plenty of evidence with newer batteries having very little degradation over time. I bought my Chevy Bolt with over 100k miles, and no real practical loss in range. I get your concern, but statistically it is a very low risk.
      Regarding fast charge, again, statistically it is not relevant. If you plan to do nothing to your home infrastructure to allow you to charge, and will only be DCFC for all your charging needs, then obviously you plan for that cost in your analysis. But it is not a ding against the vast majority of people's situations.
      Also, who cares if Ford mechanics are not sold on it? They obviously have conflicts of interest here, as their livelihood and expertise is currently in servicing vehicles. If you all of a sudden have fewer jobs as a result of a new technology, that is obviously going to affect your opinion of that technology. Oil companies are not sold on the EV industry either, as they'd rather sell more oil. The equestrian industry was not sold on the car at the turn of the 20th century. The list of these kinds of terrible arguments goes on.

    A couple of factors that you left off the video. The lightning still qualifies for the federal tax credit of $7500 so the price of the lightning is actually cheaper than an equally spec'ed gas f150 gas variant. Also, if you live in a state like Texas where the state offers an additional $2,500 rebate then it makes even more sense to go electric. Also, the cost to replace your oil also goes away, replacing the oil 3 times a year comes out to about $300 more in yearly savings.

People buy trucks so they can tow….EV trucks fail bigly in this way. 89 miles per charge….big fail! Not to mention the batteries catch fire when in an accident and they cost between $6k to $14k+ to replace and are not even available yet. Just say no!

    I had a reservation for the Lightning and wanted the XLT with the extended range. The standard Lightning XLT was $60k-ish. When you added the extended range, it was an additional $19k, making the pre-order @ $80k. I was not about to spend $80k on any truck, especially when a standard ICE 3.5L has a range of 550 miles. I cancelled my reservation and got an ICE 2022 XLT FX4 Texas Edition @ $60k. I think you forgot to add some things: a) ~$1000 for home charger w/ install b) at your current rate of 16.5k miles a year, you would exhaust Ford's 100k battery warranty in 6 years. Over time the battery pack will reduce in performance and you won't get the same range compared to brand new. c) potentially higher insurance premium and registration fees in some states as well. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to get my Lariat too! but I think people should be aware that they will need to spend more time charging on the road and more money upfront on charging, insurance premiums, and registration fees.

    If you go to TFL they bought one and drove about 1200 miles for a real world test. They spent $193 including the 3 free charges from the dealership of 183.65 KWh @ $0.43=$79 free charging = $272 for the 1200 miles. Driving the equivalent Ford F-150 getting about 28 miles per gallon, now figure average gas prices. Are you really getting a good savings on gas? Real world driving is much more accurate then an EPA website. Oh and they had to stop 11 times to charge going an average of 70mph highway with charge times between 36min-1hr. I'm a fan of the EV technology buy until they can figure out how to make the batteries without stripmining and getting them from Russia or China I'll stick with my gas for now.

    Great to see that Apples to Apples (Feature to Feature) MSRP comparison! I note those were both 'high' end vehicles, I wonder what it would be like for a 'Work' (Low end) vehicle? I'll do that. You mentioned Ford Dealers charging premiums for these on-demand vehicles. I read an article about Jim Farley hinting at selling vehicles direct to the consumer, a.k.a. the Tesla business model. I would love to see what the ford dealer agreement is and am curious how the Manufacturer - Dealer - Service Center - Customer relationship is going to be changing? Especially, with Ford's reorganization. Disclaimer, I own what for me are substantial positions in Tesla and Ford stock. I think they will be the winners in the move to EVs.

    I think the answers would be interesting. I always assumed the draw to EV pickups was the prospect of saving money via not having to buy gasoline/diesel and engine fluids anymore. Clearly that's not the case because people are willing to pay $20k to $50k more money to get one of these EV pickups vs. a traditional ICE pickup. So....what IS the reason? would have been more realistic to use the average cost of gas for the past 10 years and compare that. Which by the way is $2.79 (2012-2021) yes, gas is more expensive at the moment but it's unlikely to remain at these highs for more than a year. Your savings are likely about 40% less in this case compared to the improbable scenario of $5 gas for the next 10 years shown in the video.

I would assume this is a separate cost entirely from the vehicle purchase, Thus extending your cost/ break even point…. also what is not being discussed is that I feel there is a large demographic being left out.. people and young adults who live in apartments without overnight access to charging stations. Very unique situations but still something not being discussed if EV is the future. Love the channel and keep up the awesome work.

      Great question! The short answer is no. The $4,000 integration system is ONLY if you want the Lightning to power your house. Ford provides a free charger with every EV. You would just need an electrician to wire a 220 plug in your garage. Very inexpensive. But this is a question that deserves its own video.
