- A customer asks, "I wanted to ask about valve adjustment on my Honda Shadow. I have done it three times and my valves seem loud. Yes I was top dead center on the compression stroke, I started at .006 intake and .008 exhaust. Last time I went .005 and .007. Should I just go a little tighter?"
STOP RIGHT NOW!!! Let TJ walk you through this. TJ explains how to adjust the valves on your Honda Shadow.
YES, you can use a set of go/no-go feeler gauges to make this all easier, but here's the basics. WATCH AND LEARN!!!

I love that the answer to this question was just "use a set of go/no-go gauges."
why complicate things?
As usual, Tijuana Tommy is generous and accurate with sharing his depth of knowledge. Thanks!
They do make "go-no go" feeler gauges. For example an .007 would be .007 at the tip and step up to .008 so you could check that the .007 would go in but the .008 wouldn't all in one motion.
Is there a video of you adjusting the valves of a vt600? I would really appreciate it. Awesome vids!
sorry dont have one of those!
Shop teacher back when said the best way to get the right feel is put a strip of paper in a book and slide it out!
I rebuilt this engine .. pistons jugs bored and I have had the engine back out 3 times shimming the *** lifters with no success .runs great ! Engine noise is terrible coming from valve cover
you are good to describe, thanks for the video👍👍

2019 Honda shadow phantom I just hit the 600 mile mark. When do I have the values checked?
I have no clue why but mine is backfiring popping at 1/4 to half throttle. New dual carbs new plugs new coils. What will happen if I plug off the 2 vacuum lines on top of the carbs. I'm about to just turn it down to bare block and rebuild just to see wtf is going on
GOOD LUCK!
Waiting for advise on hydrolic lifter adjustment on 2003 1100c2 Sabre .
front cylinder will not fire plugs seem to be wet with more or less gas mixed with oil. changed pliugs still wet coil change still no fire so does that mean i need a valve job on my 2003 shadow ace 750
I know it's 2 years later but it's possible that you have too much oil in your bike.. if that's not the issue than nevermind lol
When you adjust the clearance, you allowed +/- 1 thousandth. Is it à good idea to adjust on the tighter side expecting the gap will get more loose?
It's better to go looser. Valves usually tighten over time. Slappy valves are happy valves
I've got an '03 VT750 Spirit with over 150,000 miles on it (not sure exactly as I'm on my 2nd used speedo after the odometer on the 1st 1 shit the bed) and I have never had my valves adjusted. Should I be concerned?
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS appreciate the reply man.
If it’s not ticking leave it alone
My husband brought me a 94 Honda shadow vlx600 how can he lower it since I'm short?
Shorter shocks in the back and cut the fork spacers in the front
can you rebuild more powerfull a 99 honda shadow vt1100 ace tourer engine ?
I wondered about my 2005 Honda cbr rr1000. Ticking noise when you first start the bike up. People have told me. Some say cam chain tensioner. Some say it spun bearing.I would figure if it was a spun bearing it would make the noise even though the bike heated up once the bike gets to temperature the sound goes away. But when you get on the throttle it starts rattling like something fell in the motor. Not going to lie. Drain the oil out of it and I seen glitter in the oil no chunks of any kind but fine shavings about the size of gold glitter.. I wonder what it could be any suggestions
motor is done 😅
@@kaspuj yeah that's why I got a new motor in it .it sucked but it was a spun bearing. Had a good mechanic finding parts for it it was difficult but they found them and we back on the road again it's been 2 years and she's moving strong just looking for a new fairing kit for it
My 85 VT 1100 c.f. Honda shadow dies when I give it gas... Help please?
Its sounds like not enough fuel. If it isnt rejetted and has an exhaust it probly needs a rejet
Mileage on the bike I think it's 35.122. of course bought the bike used never know what somebody did to it or didn't do to it. From my knowledge the valve job was never done so I wonder if it's the valve that are tapping. Or a loose exhaust. I mechanic came by and listen to it and said it wasn't a spun bearingbut I'm a firm believer hearing something and taking it apart are two different things.I just miss rotten and it needs to get fixed or if someone could tell me the best place to buy another motor if worse comes to worse
“Take it to a shop” lol nah
Well, since i ma not a service or repair shop i think its better than saying to sit on it and spin? LOL
The shadow doesnt have actual hydraulic lifters, it has hydraulic tensioners, via the tappet, if the tappet however has NOT been primed, or the line that heads up to the top-end (see banjo bolt on front right of crank case(external)) your lash will be off, if the tappet is working properly, and youve adjusted everything properly, should be dang near silent
Also have to fill the oil defoamer chambers with oil, so that junk wont pull air, after a rebuild
Why don't all bikes have hydraulic valves.
I'm getting really fed up with motorcycle manufacturers.
At higher engine speeds, hydraulic valve system tend to pump up and can cause valve float. This can be a huge limitation for motorcycles since they often have higher engine rpms when compared to cars. sooooo yeah.
@4:02 that's what she said. Lol
