I love the fact that you do all this work on Honda Shadows and not Harleys. I like Harleys, but own a Honda Shadow and love it. Your videos are great and keep them coming!
Actually, the reason for the two different main jet sizes is because the rear cylinder runs hotter due to less air flow around the head. Running the rear richer keeps it cooler...
Ahhh here we go! That might also be the reason why the smaller sister, the VT-125 has two different main jets! My 2000 has this set up. Starting 2002 they changed something and the kets then were slightly bigger and the sam efor front and back.
god DAMN this helped a lot. Picked up a 94 vlx and I have no idea what the guy did to it, but it has zero power at full throttle. Sputters a lot, almost like it's starving for gas or air. I figure it's either a ratio issue, the jets or just shit built up in the carbs. Gona be looking for a universal kit and just clean/rejet the carbs, then dial in the ratio screws. This video helped immensely.
Just to add, when you put the carb back on the bike (VT750DC in my case) the airbox usually gets in the way of reaching the air/fuel mix screws and the choke gets in the way on the other side. Im using a watch makers screw driver to adjust it of course. I may get the custom stems but its a bit pricey for my blood at the moment. However the custom adjustment screws would make it way easier. Keep in mind without the airbox/filter in place you are sucking in air as is and if its dusty you may suck it into your carb. So I would try to do this in a clean area and if you dare ride it up and down the street to test you adjustments be sure to just put the air box/filter back on. Its an extra minute or two hassle but if you spent all the time rebuilding a carb, might as well treat it right.
I recently got a 02 Honda shadow spirit vt750dc working after my chicks X left it sitting fro two years. It had 18k miles. I got a lot of stuff changed and cleaned out and got it running. I completely rebuilt the carb and replaced the jets. Its OEM. I have gone over a ton of videos and how to's on adjusting the idle and air/fuel mixture. What would help would be to hear an OEM Honda Shadow with duel carbs. A video with a bike properly tuned and hear how it sounds. Maybe a brief explanation of the stock settings which most of us know already but would have helped newbies like me. I am having trouble adjusting it and the factory setting seem to not be working. Still get a slight back fire and/or some hesitation on throttle. I know its idle should be around 900RPM give or take a hundred. I know how to adjust the screws etc. But I think if I had a good baseline sound to go off of I could get it closer to perfect. Maybe do a cold start with the choke open and then let us hear how it sounds if you rev it cold and then as it warms up and from maybe a standing position opposed to leaning to one side which I noticed makes a difference. Maybe its just me but I think hearing a quality recording of the sound at its best performance OEM will tell me if Im way off or not. Just a thought. Love the videos and parts. Cheers.
can you remake this video please? i couldnt see much in this one and on my 2006 shadow spirit vt750dc i couldnt find some of the ports to plug that you showed. like they werent there. thanks for the jet kit and other stuff im yet to try them on.
After reassembly of the carb I have gas coming out of a vent tube I believe? Gas was also coming out of the rear side exhaust. @7:10 your finger with the D is pointing to the port the fuel was coming out of... Thinkn I need to check the float? Any help would be appreciated !!
Typically, anytime you make a change to your intake or exhaust, you SHOULD re-jet accordingly, since your exhaust is now more free flowing, you probably should re-jet.
Great Video, Very Informative! But you went very fast on showing where the Airfuel Mixture screw is? I still have the welch plug? and don't know which is the right plug to take out? there are 2 on each side I believe?
Hi, I recently bought a 2002 750 shadow spirit bobber that was running like crap. It was running two pod filters so I bought the stock intake/air box system. Now it runs great but looks like crap. If I install this jet kit, can I then go back to running the two straight filter pods again?
I have a 1998 shadow ace 750 I had a shop put a stage 1 on the bike because the guy before me took out the baffles on stock pipes so it was popping .so now I bought one of those crome spike air intake & cover and now popping and running like crap so I took carbs off and put a 114 jets on it because that's what the spike filter came with and it still runs like crap and popps
TJ first, your are awesome. Question 03 ACE: Can I eliminate the fuel pump while using the original fuel tank? I have completed Jets and installed Aftermarket pipes (Baffles removed). I noticed every time i tried dialing it in. It's like I showered in gas. Im not thinking about the Bobber look yet (tank - gravity fed).
well before you deal with removing the fuel pump, it sounds like something else is going on. if youre being showered in gas then you have a problem other than the pump, the pump is BARELY a pump at that. But check yourt fittings and go back through your install first. something else is wrong.
I'm about to do my first rebuild on a 87 rebel 450. Waiting on my eBay clymers manual before I remove everything. Unfortunately the eBay kit doesn't even have the sizes listed
Dear TJ! Thank you so much for the teaching my grandmother how to suck eggs. She is happy as i dont know who. But she asked me to ask you for a quick question. Recently she bought Japans insider model as Honda Shadow vt 400 A.C.E. 2004 and she doesnt know anything about her carburetor .. Does she have the same as on VT750 and this video fits for her? i said that TJ is a cool guy and in addition of sucking eggs will explayn how it works with your carb!
Shite. Sorry friend.Wish I had known. I just bought a jet kit from Sigma on ebay. That's how I ended up finding your video. Picked up some used slash cut pipes for $100, Doing the 4 - degree timing mod, gutting the snorkle from the stock intake, adding K&N air filter, 39T sprocket. Should do it all next Saturday.. What else would you recommend? I bought the 750 ACE because it is 50 lbs lighter than the 1100 and is chain drive. I like getting a lot from a mid-size bike, instead of just buying displacement and extra weight.
I apreciate these videos so damn much about rip thorugh my old 95 600 carbs and hoping a good cleaning will do the trick bike idles great seems have no main jet under load though
nice video! mine is a vt750ca. and just installed the cobra lo boy shotgun pipes. i believe i am running to lean now :) ... thxs for the video very well done.
Is there a way to jet and adjust a carb so that you can run a leaner idle but still allow enough flow at higher rpm? Like is that just using a bigger jet for the main jet?
I have a v twin the front cylinder the main jet is rich 90 and the back is 100..... Do u keep the front rich and the back more lean or match the jets or what?
Damn, didn't go crazy tight, but may have tighten my jets a little too much after watching your video. Bottomed them out, then gave a controlled snugging.
Just finished a late night in the garage after installing the carb with the tuning kit. Starts and idles super rough, sputters and almost dies as soon as I give it throttle. Hands on part wasn’t too bad but once I start getting into air fuel mixtures and stuff I get a bit stuck

Hi TJ any tips of right jetting for dual carb honda steed 400, just want to get rid of the airbox. Its pain in the ass when it loosen out cause of the vibration, the bike malfunction. Appreciate your help. Thank you in advance 🙇🏻♂️
Alot of people say to use 2 shims per needle should i copy them 2002 vt750 ace cobra slash baffles out stock airbox k&n filter? Or only use 1 like you stated in this video?
Hey Sr I'm looking to rid myself of all unnecessary vacuum lines . I rebuilt my carburetor jets just need a video to follow for a duel carb. 1995 1100 ace
Thanks bro i got lucky with a 83 shadow stock so im tryna cross reference as much info as i can bfore i waste money trying to do simple mods i appreciate it 🦾
@Tommy pilot yet super clean. so im guessing is a vacuum leak. How do I go about that? If I put the airbox back on and press start buttom it wants to start but wont crank over. If I take the air box off and place my hand over the hole where the airbox goes it will crank but the moment I take my hand off ot will shut off.
+AB Fernandez you would be surprised at how some people say " really cleaned it good" and their pilot jets are all but completely clogged. its near impossible to get the insides of jets clean, varnish builds up and like cholesterol, it reduces the size of the jet restricting fuel. Your bike is too lean, you may need to back out your mix screws, no further than 3 turns, your pilots are plugged or you have a vacuum leak, also make sure your idle is up high enough.
If I were to buy a stage 3 jet kit for a bike that has a stock intake and a unbaffled aftermarket exhaust would I have any major issues with the bike running? or do I need to start with a small jet no matter what?
Your website and video says 2 different things about how many shims to put on the needle. I have a mostly stock 93 vt600 vlx, I only recently installed rejet kit and velocity stack, chopped exhaust coming soon. The bike bogs in top gears and has exhaust after fire. I’m wondering if maybe I installed jets wrong? Need 2 shims instead of one? I’m going to bigger jetting so i might be adding another shim as well
We are so sorry, but we just cannot help diagnose bikes via RUclips! It usually ends up being an exercise in futility and frustration. Hey man thanks a ton for making this video. I just finished my carb rebuild and so I was watching to make sure I did everything right lol I saw your tear down videos. Great stuff! Now when I turn the choke off on my bike it kills the engine tho...I'm curious, what would your process of elimination be to figure out the cause?
I understand how to put them on. I’ve had the carb apart a time or two. I guess I should have clarified my question. If I leave the air box and all of the original equipment on the bike in that area, will it be hard to get to the choke knobs that you sell? I seen on one of your descriptions that the shorty chokes work better if you take the extras off and use the velocity stacks.
Howdy i have two ACE 1100 96 and a 97, the 97 has been alil neglected and im in the process of working on it, ive heard from couple people that if i pull the carbs i run the risk of them not being in sink anymore, and ive looked into and there kinda unclear if i can just pull them out but keep them together replace my internals and slap them back on, that part i cant handle i wouldnt have the feintest clue how to sink them or the tools to do so haha garage mechanic
Hey mam ordered the performance kit, velocity stacks, and backlash exhaust for my 750.. I'm here in California east bay area.. which jets should I put in?
Okay, on my 1984 Canadian VT750 on my slides is a notch near the bottom on each one roughly 1/4 square. It's like it's intentionally cut to allow clearance for the butterfly valve? Why I'm asking is I've removed torn diaphragms and now upon reinstalled new diaphragms I'm noticing the air hole alignment on the rubber and when positioned the notch in the slide is cock-eyed to being in center towards the slide! Is this something I must correct?
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS Okay yea I realize they don't rotate I think? Unfortunately when I yanked the diaphragm off I don't recall how the hole up top aligned to the position of the notch inside argh! I didn't realize that detail sadly enough!
What is that third jet looking stem? It has a tiny hole on top but has no way to remove it? Was just wondering. Its shaped like a jet but doesn't seem to do anything? Thanks.
hi TJ my name is Kenny from Ky on my carb honda 1994 600 VT is there a setting on the Emotion Tube and how to change Diaphragm that come in your kit . thank u
If got a question... steed 400 dual carb... I’m running straight pipes but extremely rich I baught the bike like that from the guy... any ideas ? Maybe aftermarket air filter? Or should I rejet 🙈
Hey TJ! I understand the need to rejet after installing a new exhaust. A have 2000 750 ACE and I love the stock air filter it has on it, and I just want to add the backdraft exhaust with the performance tuning kit. Will running the stock air filter be a problem with this, or will I just need to adjust as needed?
Thanks for the videos! I just got an 83 vt500c...and have been struggling to find carb kits. Is this the same carb across the board for 500, 600, 750, etc.? Excuse my ignorance, I'm fairly new to these bikes
Thank you brother for a great video. I have a 1996 VT 1100 Ace that I recently bought a set of Cobra exhaust for. I haven't put them on the bike yet I was waiting for after the winter. How do I know what size jets do I put in. I was planning to also put a high-flow air intake from K&N.
TJ, I installed a 145 main on an open exhaust and velocity stacks, but when I run at full throttle for a while it starts to stutter. Any idea what causes this?
Question: what size jets do you typically use for a 91 vlx600? I want to get the kit you have on your website but don’t know which size to use?? I know it comes with two different sizes.
so.......... throttle side of air/fuel mixture screw goes to 1 and half counter clockwise right??????? then how about other side of A/F mixture screw?? how many turn??
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS thanks for reply but i still cannot under stand.... i have 1993 dual carb VT600 also in Asia we called STEED 400/600 my bike has genuine air intakes (with KN filter...you know.. the coverd red oil blah blah...) only thing i change was the exhuast pipe Symptoms are as follows 1.hard to start : so i use choke 3~4 min warmming up S.Korea temperature almost 5'C (41'F) 2. Back firesssss when i deacceleration so i touched air screw on the right side of carb ( the triangle cover thing) when i turn clock wise and locked it sounds like sattle down, no back fires no cough exhuast...
Help me TJ! I drilled out the wrong Welch plugs on the carburetors of my VT750CDC dual carb 02’ shadow. I was trying to adjust the mixture screws. My Honda dealer does not sell them. I don’t like to rig stuff on my bike.
TJ I’m having a problem with my 97 VT1100C2 ACE that you might be able to help with. I replaced the coils with Accel Super Coils and went from stage 1 jets to stage 3 jets. I got everything button back up and started it up but she has a very bad backfiring at idle and when I give it throttle. I have checked for vacuum leaks and played with the mixture screw with no change. It’s louder when you give more throttle. Can you give me any advice?
hi just like to start by saying what a great video, i own a 98 vt750 ace it has highway hawk fatboy pipes and just installed a kuryakin air intake however on opening the throttle if coughs and splutters and closing the throttle it back fires and pops . so would this mean its running to lean? so more fuel is required if so any suggestions on what size jets i would need kev
Hey Kev! just saw this! it sounds like your pilot circuit needs attention! Its hard to diagnose carb issues sight unseen but if you have changed your exhaust or intake you NEED to rejet appropriately! you most likely need to lift your needle, go up in size with your pilot as well as your main. hope this helps man!
I have a 04 Honda Shadow with a 750 dual carburetor when I try to start it it wants to fire up then cuts right back off clean out all old gas if they spark plugs and new battery still same thing
I put stacks on my bike and as soon as I throttle it sputters and shuts off Or if I get it moving every gear is massively underpowered Will rejecting with the dual carb performance jet kit coupled with a rune potentially fix this issue?
I love the fact that you do all this work on Honda Shadows and not Harleys. I like Harleys, but own a Honda Shadow and love it. Your videos are great and keep them coming!
Actually, the reason for the two different main jet sizes is because the rear cylinder runs hotter due to less air flow around the head. Running the rear richer keeps it cooler...
Easy to confirm with handheld thermometer. Thanks.

Awesome video picking up a shadow this week. That needs carbs done.Do you have link for jet kit?
Hows it going....I just ordered your backdraft pipes and wanted to know what jet kit would I need for a 1996 Honda Shadow ace Vt1100
hi love your vids man is this carb the same as shadow 125cc /
/?
Have you ever thought about making an intake to mount a single carb in place of dual carbs?
thank you sooo much! this video was quite informative!!!
Copy the stock setup man. I don't deal with the tariff year bikes but im positive the slides can't rotate inside the diaphragm.
Is it necessary to shim the needle when replacing the jets? or can you just replace the jets without the shim?
Hey TJ! I understand the need to rejet after installing a new exhaust. A have 2000 750 ACE and I love the stock air filter it has on it, and I just want to add the backdraft exhaust with the performance tuning kit. Will running the stock air filter be a problem with this, or will I just need to adjust as needed?
I didn't clip the centre of the yellow plastic that hold s the spring. Can this alone cause my bike to bod on full throttle after re-jetting?
Im sorry i cant diagnose via youtube comments but we do have a free tuning e book that might help!

Question: what size jets do you typically use for a 91 vlx600? I want to get the kit you have on your website but don’t know which size to use?? I know it comes with two different sizes.
What's the plastic T thats connects the two carbs? Mines pouring gas when trying to start it
Upon inspection of the vacuum slide on that side, noticed two small tears. Not sure if that is my problem or a result of my problem.
Hi sir i have honda steed 400 and i always encounter my other cylinder will not fire mg carb is stock thanks
so.......... throttle side of air/fuel mixture screw goes to 1 and half counter clockwise right??????? then how about other side of A/F mixture screw?? how many turn??
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS thanks for reply but i still cannot under stand.... i have 1993 dual carb VT600 also in Asia we called STEED 400/600 my bike has genuine air intakes
(with KN filter...you know.. the coverd red oil blah blah...)
only thing i change was the exhuast pipe
Symptoms are as follows
1.hard to start : so i use choke 3~4 min
warmming up S.Korea temperature almost
5'C (41'F)
2. Back firesssss when i deacceleration
so i touched air screw on the right side of carb ( the triangle cover thing)
when i turn clock wise and locked
it sounds like sattle down, no back fires
no cough exhuast...
Help me TJ! I drilled out the wrong Welch plugs on the carburetors of my VT750CDC dual carb 02’ shadow. I was trying to adjust the mixture screws. My Honda dealer does not sell them. I don’t like to rig stuff on my bike.
i have a 88 vlx.i'm thinking remove the ugly originale airfilter and putting on small airfilters Direct at the carbs.need to jetted then?
TJ I’m having a problem with my 97 VT1100C2 ACE that you might be able to help with. I replaced the coils with Accel Super Coils and went from stage 1 jets to stage 3 jets. I got everything button back up and started it up but she has a very bad backfiring at idle and when I give it throttle. I have checked for vacuum leaks and played with the mixture screw with no change. It’s louder when you give more throttle. Can you give me any advice?
hi just like to start by saying what a great video, i own a 98 vt750 ace it has highway hawk fatboy pipes and just installed a kuryakin air intake however on opening the throttle if coughs and splutters and closing the throttle it back fires and pops . so would this mean its running to lean? so more fuel is required if so any suggestions on what size jets i would need
kev
Hey Kev! just saw this! it sounds like your pilot circuit needs attention! Its hard to diagnose carb issues sight unseen but if you have changed your exhaust or intake you NEED to rejet appropriately! you most likely need to lift your needle, go up in size with your pilot as well as your main. hope this helps man!
May not relate but I would like to know if the shorty choke knobs on your website will fit a dual carb system on an 1984 vt700c
I have a 04 Honda Shadow with a 750 dual carburetor when I try to start it it wants to fire up then cuts right back off clean out all old gas if they spark plugs and new battery still same thing
2002 shadow 1100, Str8 pipes stock air box need a jet set brother
Tj, how do I know what I can plug off on the carbs?
I put stacks on my bike and as soon as I throttle it sputters and shuts off
Or if I get it moving every gear is massively underpowered
Will rejecting with the dual carb performance jet kit coupled with a rune potentially fix this issue?
Hey TJ, how much does a Carb Rebuild go for a VT750 DC and what does it entail/include?
where to you buy the caps you have same places capped off on yours with yellow and orange caps
