The Practice of Making Chai

  • Join Vasant Lad, BAM&S, MASc, founder and director of The Ayurvedic Institute, as he walks you through his personal masala chai recipe and daily meditation as you make a cup of chai together.
    In this moment of making chai we get to spend a few moments in contemplation - working with each ingredient - to make a brew that is good for our systems, as well as a gift for others in our household and community. Sharing a cup of chai with our loved ones is a blessing we can both give and receive every day!
    When asked to give the exact portions for this recipe, Vasant Lad made a joke that he doesn’t measure - and in a way this is what we each do with our personal chai recipe, learn what works for us.
    Vasant Lad’s Chai Recipe
    As a guide, you can begin with this recipe* for 4 people:
    3 cups of filtered water
    4 cloves
    2 pinches of ground nutmeg
    2 pinches of ground cinnamon
    2 pinches of ground cardamom
    ½ inch piece of fresh ginger
    1 or 2 teaspoon black tea (depending on how strong you like your chai)
    1 cup of milk
    2 teaspoons Turbinado sugar / sweetener of your choice
    *In the video, Vasant Lad also adds lemongrass and black pepper corns. Feel free to add these as you experiment with the flavor.

    i am crying because this man reminds me of my grandfather for whom i made tea growing up, a very similar recipe. he wore a very similar ring, and a similar watch. he also looked similar to you. he is, however, no more and that's why im crying. thank you for reminding me about him.

    In ancient ayurveda perhaps there is no mention of tea. Tea is introduced mainly by British and other European.If there any ancient ayurvedic book mentioning uses of tea as a drink, please inform me about the book .

    Namaskaram Guruji, what is the significance of adding milk to the chai. I feel like it is disturbing the whole essence of the decoction. May be, we are adding the milk as we get used to it out of ignorance and so we continue to have that kick. Please clarify the truth behind adding the milk to chai. Thank you.

    Wondering, doesn't tea block iron absorption? What is the right way to consume tea, like not to eat anything with tea, like khakhara OR before/after consuming tea how long one should wait to eat meal, breakfast etc.
    Appreciate your insights and inputs 🙏

    Plants do not have spirits and are not deity. You really think a cinnamon stick is a god? Repent for this is idolatry and worship the true and living God who created these wonderful plants for our healing, sustenance and enjoyment.

    Also if you put a small piece of bread into your turbinado sugar canister it will keep the sugar from hardening. I use a small slice of sourdough and it does the trick. :)

    With due respect I am just sharing traditional Maharashtrian morning tea recipe . It says never boil black tea. Add tea powder after a rolling boil and turn off heat, put lid and wait 5 min, then add milk and sugar to taste. Boiling tea releases more tannins. Science supports this as well. Definitely prevents tanned guts! Search without prejudice.

    • @claudiaconrad5754
      @claudiaconrad5754 Год назад +2

      what's bad about tannins?

    • @nithinsadasivan4470
      @nithinsadasivan4470 Год назад

      @@claudiaconrad5754 Tannins are good, they do not pause any health issues, they are anti-oxidising in nature. Tannins also remove harmful microbes from the body, and fight against harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi etc.. so its a bonus actually

    • @Saffronlily
      @Saffronlily Год назад

      Tannins are astringent so too much can lower absorption and affect gut flora health
