  • Enjoy this preview for our upcoming series - Everyday Ayurvedic Cooking with Sneha. In this video, experienced Ayurvedic chef and Dean of Education at The Ayurvedic Institute, Sneha Raichada shares a traditional date shake recipe. This is a wonderful alternative to a morning smoothie, packed with dates, almonds, and possibilities for spices to fit to your personal constitution! In Ayurveda dates are considered special because they are Sattvic (promoting peace in the mind) and nourish Ojas (which gives our immune system strength). Dates are filled with nutrition for our bodies, while supporting healthy tissues and immune system.

Could one also use prunes? Perhaps in place of or in addition to the dates?

Āyurveda does not recommend drinking so much food in this way. Chewing is important for good digestion and most people don’t chew at all when drinking smoothies. I find it hard to believe that Dr Lad would agree with this 🙏🏻

One can chew this smoothie too, Its just about saliva make the food to digest. Don't be that much serious in life, enjoy.

Dear Susanji, Dr. Lad prescribes this to many clients under the right circumstances. Many broths in Ayurveda are not chewed. We use many gruel type dishes as well. Ayurveda teaches us that we are surrounded by healing and medicine. It all depends on the right qualities in the right situation. Much love and light to you on your learning and healing journey.

Interesting point, Susan - from an Ayurvedic perspective, we need to consider the state of digestive fire - the agni. Warm, room-temperature foods are more easily digested and assimilated nutritionally by the body. We definitely want to chew foods, but the body still has to work harder to break down foods, especially if they are fibrous and "chewing" does only some of the job. If the digestive fire is not strong, this can create ama and build-up of toxins in the system, clogging the channels which will impact elimination. A date shake is very nutritious for all 3 doshas. In the morning, when our digestive fire is low - we need something that is light and nutritious so a date shake would be perfect, or a warm stewed apple or pear; at lunch, when the digestive fire is strong, you would have a more hearty meal and again at dinner when digestion is slowing down - lighter fare. This follows the natural cycles of nature. Considering a date shake - it is also good if someone needs more nourishment because they may have weak bala, low digestive fire or low physiological strength - someone who is sick, for example. Dr. Lad is a doctor and long-time, well-respected practitioner of the great classical tradition of Ayurveda - not an armchair scholar. I myself hold a MS degree in Ayurveda and have full confidence in his recommendations; I've also had good results with my clients who love date shakes. Chewing is only one aspect of a very complex digestive system. Namaste

What would you recommend a pitta underweight person who wants to gain weight.. We need to increase kapha right.. And 5-6 meals?
More carbs than protein n adequate fats.. I know ahswandgansha n shatavar helps but man some of the most healthiest things like Matta ri e.. Red rice black rice.. Millets all lead to weight loss 😂.. Even south Indian ghee coffee my fav..
Also I have noticed I left wheat and feel great.. Gluten is said to be anti nutrient..@@Writestyle2012
