I feel the whole 2FA system is bs because it just says that you can use any authenticator app. Well, I've used the Google authenticator app for a long time and nothing was stored there. Now my old phone died and I got a new one, and all of a sudden I'm screwed. This is a major flaw with this security feature because how do I get a QR code to add accounts into an authenticator app, when these accounts asks me for an authenticator key. It's just impossible. I'm trying to get into my Amazon account and well, I've also changed phone number, so I cannot have them text me. The next thing is I cannot contact them without being logged in to my account about the very codes I cannot produce out of thin air... I'll have to scan an id and go the route and see how long this bs will take me. At least now I see that *_Authy_* saves my accounts so I will start using that from now on. I believe all of this would be fixed if the creators of 2FA made a standalone app so they would feel more responsible for providing a viable solution. So, my advice for any security creators: Keep It Simple Stupid

Well, very nice. I've just done this, expecting it to work universally everywhere, but he second part with the long code and the option to save it seems to only work on twitter. On the crypto Broker's site where I used the 2FA authentication, the option isn't there, so now the value of my phone technically isn't 200 USD, but 2200 USD, approximately (combined with the amount invested in the crypto on that site). Now I can't lose the phone or I am done. Well, I can still deactivate the 2FA there if needed. Since the title of the video doesn't say Twitter, I am assuming the assumption is it should work everywhere, otherwise Twitter would be mentioned in the title or the description. I guess the problem is I didn't access the site via phone. I am also considering buying a backup phone and transfer the accounts and never take both of them with me, so I make sure one of my phones are secure at home in case one of them breaks or I lose it.
You might be interested to know that as of March 2024, Snapchat 2FA (TOTP) is not operational even if it is enabled. On both mobile and web platforms, it's useless. Users are not be prompted for 2FA authentication on any platform ... again, even if it is properly enabled on the app.

In that case, I would complain to Twitch about their horrific security standards. I mean, you could go to great lengths to have another person/device take a picture of the QR code and then scan it, but that’s just ridiculous. This is a major oversight by Twitch.
In at least one case, when I was setting up TOTP 2fa, the site would not give me an option to copy a typewritten code, only giving me a QR code to work with. It wasn't a problem for me in that situation, because I was doing this on my computer, and my phone was free to scan the code, but this may not be the case for some folks. Are there screenshot readers?

Without your Yubikey they can try all they want but if I were you I would login to your Gmail account on a different device, navigate to your account security settings, remove your stolen MacBook from trusted devices and reset your Gmail account password. :)
Hey Paul, if your computer was stolen, the person would first need to hack your password to get into the computer (you do password protect your computer, I hope). After that, yes, they would have access to your email account. Thankfully, if your computer were stolen, you could easily log into your Gmail account and tell Google that this device is no longer trusted, and NOW they won't be able to log in without your password and Yubikey.
I ran into a "problem" today...one of my accounts gave me a QR code but no key to type in (while setting up my Yubikey authenticator app). Tip for chrome users, you can just use google lens on the QR code and it will show you the code. ( just right click on it and click search with google lense)

Yes, a physical 2FA key is better than an Authenticator app, but the app is free. So there’s still a sizable number of people who use the app (plus many online accounts don’t accept keys yet).

Well that works fine as long as you're using two separate devices. However if you open the site with your mobile you can't take a picture of the QR code to get the authenticator code.

You can easily see he used a phone throughout the entire video if you actually watch it. The video solves your exact problem.
From your other videos I've seen of yours I know you use 1password... do you also use 1password as the authenticator as well. What are the risks of using the SAME password manager to do both passwords AND 2fa ? or should I use a different app for 2FA?
Pasting it into what kind of online account? Whatever it is, if it won't take you to the next level, that's an issue you need to take up with the company/website you're trying to set up 2FA on.

You can only activate 2FA after you’re logged in, so it sounds like you’re being asked for a 2FA code from a previous setup. Either way, this is something only Facebook can help you with, not me.

I use a severity key. Way better then this kind of 2fa.

Plenty of services don't offer physical key but do offer TOTP codes.

I would say that’s the least most secure 2fa method as email is inherently insecure.
