    I was one of those kids who grew up with these books. Like every single one to even when they were covering a character like Jason Grace and Piper in the Lost Heroes of Olympus. Truth be told I don't remember a single thing from them, but as I watch this show, the more I do like how it straight up is a kids show for the fans of the books. I am really hoping it progresses more to where it can get a Harry Potter like following and we get more seasons covering the other books.

    Really disappointed Percy didn't interact with the zebra. I didn't even notice the zebra until someone pointed it out, it's on the screen for like 2 seconds.
    As a book reader, I was honestly so shocked when they mentioned Luke's mom May because it's very early in the story. But it does give non-readers the information that some humans have the ability to see through the Mist, which we talked about in a previous episode.
    In The Lightning Thief, the trio uses a spray gun at a car wash to make a rainbow. In the sequel series, Heroes of Olympus, someone uses a prism to make a rainbow. So basically, all you need is a rainbow and any valuable object (golden drachmas, diamonds, etc) to make a video call.
    The 1st time Percy calls her "Wise Girl", I was waiting to hear it!
    All I'm gonna say is that there is something bigger going on, the war is only the beginning.
    I do believe that is The Voice. In his own dreams he's the principal of Yancy for some weird reason.
    Ares said "Hermes hangs out " at the Casino last episode. I love Lin-Manuel Miranda, he's awesome as Hermes! It's interesting that he exists beyond "space and time", he doesn't have that in the book but teleportation. And yes, Hermes dad is Zeus.
    Overall, as a book reader, I think it's an okay episode. I think it's entertaining enough if I forget about the book. This is my least favorite of the season so far.
    PS: Don't know how the TV show is gonna handle this so... Based on the book, all demigods have Superhuman abilities: strength, speed, agility, stamina, durability, senses and reflexes. And based on who their godly parents are, they get more abilities like controlling water.
    Also (possible spoiler) people in the casino don't age.

      @lilbrownbear 5 месяцев назад +12

      not my favourite episode is an understatement. i was frankly disappointed. like ok, theres nothing inherently wrong with it on a technical or storytelling perspective. BUT, as a book reader this was SO UNDERWHELMING. i liked hermes's inclusion and how that draws in Luke's arc, but it took away from what the casino side quest was supposed to be about. the vibes for the casino just weren't there. the compulsion the characters felt for wanting to stay just wasn't there. percabeth, especially annabeth, were way too aware and conscious of the situation. i absolutely hated the fact that they just ended the deadline to the solstice. the tension we got in the books of going from (0) oh theres enough days to get this done to (100) shit we've been here daysss and now theres just one evening left to complete the quest was what made that part interesting. it was also very reminiscent of the fact that us adhd folks procrastinate all tasks until 5 minutes from deadline and then get it done to perfection. here, the deadlines already passed, the stakes are high but theres no tension to tag along with it.
      and to your point of the zebra (I'll be honest i dont remember that part from the books its been a while) the episode is literally titled after the zebra why did they not include that!!!!
      honestly, if it wasnt for the "wise girl" "old married couple" and "bianca!" parts, this episode would rank the lowest (idk which ep holds that rank currently tbh)

    • @EverShy_
      @EverShy_ 5 месяцев назад +2

      I rewatched the episode and I agree. I'm torn because I want this to be a good episode, and there are really good stuff they included like the whole conversation with Hermes, Percabeth moments, May, Percy driving the taxi (absolutely hilarious), even Grover playing a VR game.
      But on the other hand, as a book reader, I'm not happy with the writers. No interaction with the zebra, no hotel room scene, barely saw the arcade (that part really bothers me as we spent a lot of time there in the book). Maybe it's just me, but I thought Hermes would help them, I thought he didn't want a war.
      Also, I don't understand why they removed the deadline. It is interesting but I don't know if I like this change or not.
      I guess we'll see after the last 2 episodes. @@lilbrownbear

      @@EverShy_ yeah... most of the stuff i/you mentioned im willing to overlook but the deadline thing really bothers me. im sure they're gonna work the story just fine up ahead but it really kinda cheapened the stakes for me idk

      @@lilbrownbear There's been an underlying feeling that Rick Riordan's trying to tell a slightly different story than from the books, and this is the episode where it takes a massive step further. Also dunno what you mean about killing tension, instead of racing to complete the quest before the Solstice it's now racing to complete the quest before Zeus and Poseidon finish gathering their armies and fight each other. Still tension. The fact that the show is surprising book readers is a good thing imo.

    As you mentioned how good the casting was for Younger Percy, the kid actor’s actually not as much of a lookalike as you think. He’s said on his Instagram that they CG Walker Scobell’s face onto his and sort of blend the two together. I’m guessing it’s similar to what they do on Star Wars whenever Young Luke shows up and they have to put a deepfaked Mark Hamill onto another actor.

    I'm not surprised there are so many book readers watching your reaction. Just because they've read the books doesn't mean they don't still enjoy seeing your reactions and joining in on the conversation sans spoilers. I haven't read the books (yet). I was introduced to Percy via the movies, and I thought the movies were good. I was bummed to hear they wouldn't make the third installment. Then, I learned about how the author and books fans were so disrespected. I can understand why they're upset. When I heard a tv series was in the works, and the author was directly involved, I was curious. And the more I learn about how off the movies were, the more I'm rooting for the show to do well. The challenge has been and will continue to be how to translate the book format to tv format. The author himself acknowledged this is a struggle. This week, I was left a little disappointed, it felt like we took a step back. It could have benefited from some additional scenes, in my opinion. They could have utilised Lin Manuel more. They left Percy with the job of explaining what was happening to them at the Lotus casino and I get the book is from his perspective/thoughts, but I don't feel it worked as well as it could have. Lin Manuel being such a larger than life character, you could have added a few extra scenes of him manipulating time. It would've added to the disorientation of being in the casino and he could've ultimately revealed that time works differently there, vs just tapping his watch and Percy reacting abruptly and then it been explained to us by him afterwards. I also didn't get why Grovers uncle runs away from Percy and Annabeth when they're trying to question him. I get he's forgotten who he is and all, but that's a weird angle to play. It makes him look guilty or as if he's switched sides and he hasn't. He's a victim just like them. And then he's forgotten about. It would've been nice if Grover said he'd come back for him one day. Idk. Some things feel like head scratchers so until I read the books, I don't know exactly what the issue is, but i absolutely don't blame the actors. Children or not, they are doing an amazing job with what they're being given.

    A few minor corrections/clarifications (NO SPOILERS):
    - Iris Messages: They need a rainbow to make an Iris Message (Annabeth calls her the Goddess of Rainbows here) not specifically water. Here they used a prism and the sun. In the book they used a spray/mist of water and the sun. Either works as long as it makes a rainbow to call to Iris.
    - Ares said the truck was going to the Lotus Casino in Vegas and that Hermes hangs out there. So, while he didn't warn them about the casino, he did send them directly to Hermes.
    - They didn't want to eat the lotus flowers because of the story of the lotus-eaters (not Persephone's story, though the outcome has some similarities). Grover references The Odyssey which talks about the lotus flower's impact on the eater's mind/memories and desire to stay.
    - Augustus does say, "nacho chips" not just "nachos," so Eric was sort of right while also being...wrong? lol
    In terms of powers (vaguely), like Janci pointed out in ep. 2, when Luke was taking Percy around camp to see what he was good at, they were also sort of testing him to see if he have any innate talents from his godly parent. If you're really good at an obvious talent (like archery for Apollo or blacksmithing for Hephaestus) then they can have a better idea of who your godly parent likely is (still not guaranteed which is why they wait for an official claiming). So, there are some traits that are often passed down from god to demigod (not always the same one, like one kid of Apollo might be more musically inclined while another kid of Apollo might be better at archery), but also some of the powers don't really translate as obviously as sea/water powers do (like wisdom, music, harvesting, etc.).
    Interestingly, in the book, Percy notes that the only activity he excelled at during his activities tour was canoeing. But his father being Poseidon was sort of unthinkable considering the pact the Big Three made and how angry Zeus would be even though Zeus already broke the pact by having Thalia. As a demigod, you also didn't want to indirectly accuse a god of breaking their oaths by suggesting they had a forbidden child. Gods don't really like that, and you don't really want a god as an enemy.
    Love that you guys are reacting to this show even though it's geared a little younger and you don't have a connection to the books. Also, Janci, you're doing a great job as the person at the table who already knows what's going to happen!

Frank Zhang, the son of Ares' Roman aspect Mars, is a Shapeshifter, but that power actually comes from him also being a descendant of Poseidon: Poseidon had granted that power to his grandson, Frank's ancestor. Children of Hephaestus are good at forging and usually are immune to fire to some degree. Leo Valdez in the later books is pyrokinetic, but that's a very rare power for children of Hephaestus. Some children of Aphrodite have the power of Charmspeak, a sort of Siren's song type hypnotism. Apollo's kids are the most diverse with healing, music, and archery powers being the most common. Will Solace in the later books is able to make himself glow and even weaponize it to an extent.
      Children of the Big Three are the most powerful with the most diverse powers, and even amongst the ones seen in the series, Percy is depicted as the most powerful of them all. Thalia has lightning and air related powers, but she seems to rely mostly on her fighting skills. She's also, ironically, afraid of heights. Her brother Jason Grace has similar abilities, but Jason tends to use a more diverse array of them: he can also fly, control storm spirits, create his own storms (in one cool scene Jason and Percy combined their storm powers together, but they don't need to do that as they both have storm powers), etc. Nico di Angelo can control the dead to a VAST extent and teleport through shadows. I have to say, this episode has been the most disappointing for me so far. Having them figure out the deal with the casino at the very beginning is kinda underwhelming, it would have been so cool for them to hint that something wrong, that the characters are missing something very important. It seems like the show is pretty bad at showing and not telling straight up. Cutting the Annabeth-Percy talk and the zebra is also a bit upsetting. And then changing the end to have them miss the deadline? And why doesn't the war start then, what's stopping Zeus from just smiting Percy? The gods are not as scary and mysterious here, I got to say. And them just walking calmly after finding out....
    I understand that the adaptation can't be a perfect copy of the books, but a lot of changes are not the best. It seems like their making it more kid-friendly and simple, which is weird, because the books were also for the kids. I think most people read them when they were 10-13, and absolutely loved them.
    I hope we get a second season with more budget, more episodes (or longer ones), and that the story will get progressively more mature with time.
