    I absolutely love this portrayal of Medusa. Her design is great, and Jessica Parker's acting is perfect. And the battle with her was so much better than in the movie. I just wish they'd kept Grover's "That's for Uncle Ferdinand" line when he flies at her.

    The silence and rapt attention during Medusa’s story speaks volumes of Jessica Parker Kennedy’s performance. She’s wonderful. And her ability to hint at Poseidon assaulting Medusa without saying it out loud, so the show stays child appropriate, is such a hard balance to capture, but she does it.

      The Percy Jackson franchise follows the second version of the myths, where she was a priestess and vowed chastity but had an affair with Poseidon. You're thinking of Ovid's version, where Poseidon forces himself on her and Athena curses her instead of helping her.

    In the original myth Medusa was one of three gorgon sisters that also fell in love with Poseidon. In their first version Gorgons were nothing more than monsters.
    Second version of the myth is that she had sex in Athena's temple and so Athena punished her. The author (forgot his name) of this version was also very much a misogynist.
    The third version of the myth came from Ovid iirc. He was very anti-authoritarian and it was reflected in his stories that shows the Gods in a bad light. In his version, Poseidon forced himself on Medusa and when Medusa asked Athena for help she was punished.

      I've also heard a variation of the second version where she was one of Athena's priestesses, who vowed chastity. When she had an affair with Poseidon, Athena punished her for breaking her vow. That's kind of where I think the show pulled from.

    • @anniemae4449
      @anniemae4449 6 месяцев назад +9

      I've also heard some people interpreting Athena's actions as secretly being a gift/apology to Medusa! Although it would seem like a curse to other humans/gods/creatures, her ability to turn people to stone just by looking at them would actually benefit her in the sense that she would be able to defend herself against any future attacks. Personally, I really like this version because it makes Athena's decision seem like a clever maneuver out of the situation rather than a rash, unjust punishment.

      Yeah, I think it's nice to have someone who knows the books, so they can expand more on the stuff that already happened, but it's not really fun to explain the world before the characters in the story can do it. I'm not saying anything that wasn't said in the show is a spoiler, but I feel like Janci is giving a bit too much information. Some of it are pretty serious spoilers (I'm not gonna say which one, because that would also be spoiling, but it's something she said closer to the end of the video).

      @@mangoh8er I mean, technically anything not said in the show IS a spoiler. It's just a matter of what level of spoiler people are okay with. Some people don't mind minor spoilers for background info and stuff, and others want literally no spoilers whatsoever, including something as minor as "I can't wait until you get to episode X".
      The problem is that everyone has a different level of what they personally consider a spoiler, and then they all all just assume that everyone else shares the same exact definition. Generally it's best to just avoid every single kind of potential spoiler unless you've had a conversation with someone and know what kinds of spoilers they're fine with.

    Hades' kingdom isn't hell, it's the underworld. And it is not inherantly evil, we just think it is in modern times because of bad greek translations of the Bible using the world Hades (which is not only the name of the god but also of his kingdom) to refer to what we call Hell. Tbh Hades is one of the chillest gods as far as Olympians go. Much better than Zeus and Poseidon at any rate

      I wouldn't say Chill for Hades. He is extremely strict when it comes to who enters the underworld, who gets out. There's a reason why the Greeks avoided invoking his name as much as possible. Hades is simply a fair and just ruler, that doesn't mean chill or kind.

He's also a pretty good king in terms of keeping the other Gods in check, stopping too much interference with the mortal realm (like the Troijan War where he kept having to stop Gods from fighting) and keeping laws of nature in balance, like when Helios's son nearly incinerated the earth by joyriding in his chariot.
      He takes his responsibility as King of the Gods seriously. Great example is when Typhon was running about. Hades is described as "trembling where he rules over the dead below" while Zeus no hesitation goes out to stop the rampaging monster.

    If I remember correctly, one version of the mythos is, Medusa was a priestess of Athena, and Poseidon 'defiled' her in Athenas temple. Which was one of the reasons for her ire., and subsequent punishment Which makes it even more tragic that she was punished and not Poseidon. there are two interpretations. 1 being that Athena punished her for breaking her vows [priestesses were supposed to be chaste], the other that Athena gave her the ability to never be taken advantage of by men ever again.

    13:53. Chiron explains it in th books. Monsters are 'archetypes', born frm th chaos n barbarism that alw exists beneath western civilization/th human world.This means that they are purely abstract entities. Monsters will merely reform in tartarus, th lowest region of th greek underworld, n come back whenever their physical forms are destroyed. 1 example is when percy kills asterion on his 1^ day realizing he is a half-blood. 4 years later, he sees th minotaur again. This proves to be an ordeal for heroes, for after a monster is killed it can reappear n attack again, in any time period btw days, weeks n hundreds of years. When killed, they usually turn to golden dust, yellow vapor or crumble to ashes. They forgot to explain it on th show, just like they forgot to explain why th greek Gods are in america

    6:11 Actually, no; Medusa is supposed to be ugly: skin of scales, boar tusks, yellow eyes, sometimes a pair of wings and/or tail. Plus, in the original Greek version she was always considered a monster (the only mortal Gorgon, which she was compensated for with the petrifying gaze). The entire shift from that to 'disgraced priestess of Medusa seduced by/assaulted by Poseidon' was actually a Roman invention by Ovid, who hated government and projected that onto the gods in his stories. That being said, in that version, post-transformation Medusa is also considered ugly but for a different reason: so that no man or god looking (indirectly) at her would ever want to approach her again with ill intentions.

      @PhantomForge1963 6 месяцев назад +6

      I’m gonna jump on this with my own “um actually” and point out that *wasn’t* the reason she became ugly in the Roman version, the idea of the curse actually protecting her is a very modern (and much better) idea- Metamorphoses does list Athena’s curse as “vengeance.” With Ovids anti-authoritarian stance, we are (debatably) supposed to sympathize with Medusa and dislike Athena. It would not make sense in that context for Athena to be trying to protect her from men with ill-intent.

    The role reversal between heroes and monsters is a massive spoiler for both the end of the first book and someone that shows up in the second, so that's not going to get explained right away. Being a book reader I got what they were trying to foreshadow but to say more would ruin a whole lot about the story lol
    Also I think that line has a lot to do with the theme of generational trauma/breaking bad family cycles that they're going for. Just because the gods are their parents doesn't automatically make them the good guys. It's behavior and choices that ultimately determine whether you're more monster or hero, not what you look like or what you were born into. I liked that they used Medusa as a cautionary tale for what Percy could become if he chooses a certain path - both of them were wronged by the gods but Medusa chose to use the trauma as an excuse to hurt people, whereas Percy can still choose to act differently. If he doesn't, there's a possibility he could become just as bad as his relatives, and again, that whole idea of cyclical behavior is a very big hint towards something later

    Just a curiosity for you guys:
    The story of Poseidon taking advantage of medusa and then the punishment from Athena is not true! Or at least, not entirely true. xD
    The first historical evidence of medusa being mentioned in greek mythology is from Hesiod's theogony, in which it is told that she was already born a gorgon along with her two immortal sisters (she was the only mortal of them). And there is no mention of a relationship between her and Poseidon in this story.
    So in classical greek mythology she was always a monster and was never punished by Athena because of something Poseidon did.
    Now, the story from "modern greek mythology" we all know today where she was abused by Poseidon and later turned into a gorgon by Athena is believed to be created by the romans, possibly in an attempt to defame the image of the greek gods (as if it was necessary to defame even more LOL xD)
    There is also the (most likely) possibility that because her story had little background information, these events were added along with time, as the story was told by different people and cultures.
    I guess we'll never know how the story came to be the way we know today, but I think it is fun to also know the true origin of Medusa xD

      Actually, chiron says that th entrance to th underworld has alw been in th west, in mythological times it was beyond th pillars of hercules, along th banks of th world-river, today it's in LA. It's all symbolic, olympus which represents th power of life is to th east, where th sun rises, while th kingdom of death is on th opposite side, to th west. It's like this in many mythologies, even amos in th 'th kane chronicles' trilogy tells th grandparents of th protagonists that th west side of th nile is th land of th dead, while th east side is reserved for th living

      @@Gradestar10 Yes that's true, but they could've picked any city that's in the west based off that. So for picking a specific city based on that precedent of needing something on the west cost of the country, it makes sense that Rick picked one that's famous for earthquakes. I won't spoil anything in case there's any non-book readers reading this, but towards the end of the book Percy mentions as the ground shakes that this feels like just another normal occurrence to the mortals living in LA. So western location + known for earthquakes = a perfect spot for the Underworld.

      what the person you replied to said about characters not feeling like their book counterparts tho i disagree with. they do, but yes a lot gets lost in "translation." for one the books were percy's pov so there were more quips and humor, they felt like a 12+ year old talking. here, apart from a couple scenes of fortnight dancing and choosing candies, they dont really act much like 12y/o. i get that they have a lot on their shoulders and they are a bit mature for their age in certain aspects but the book still made sure to make a point that they were literal pre-teens. them being unaware of their surroundings, being unable to recognize medusa and getting manipulated by her, throwing random remarks here and there kept that childlike spirit alive. here, someone could easily suspect them to atleast be 14-15 if they didnt know about their supposed age within the show (really doesnt help that walker looks older than 12 already)
      but all in all, the show is hella running thru storylines just to tick boxes for book readers. and that is when they''re lucking their world-building knowledge isn't all that new and is largely based on actual greek mythos. still big kudos to these kids for pulling it off

    • @juliel2488
      @juliel2488 6 месяцев назад +6

      You must have not seen the latest episodes or payed attention if you think Annabeth is just cold, and not sweet, in this 3rd episode she even tries finding candy they would like so they would like her, and in the 4th and 5th episode it shows her really opening up to Percy. She's only cold in beginning like the books because her childhood friend got turned into a tree, she ran away from her dad and stepmom when she was 7, and she can't trust anyone except Luke, she only has Luke. She's mature for her age because of what she had to endure and she's even the cabin leader even tho she is just 12. In the beginning of The Lightning Thief book, Annabeth is shown to dislike Percy when she discovers that Percy is the hero of the prophecy. She thinks he is weak and unable to complete his mission, and is influenced by the rivalry between her mother, so the show really shows this well. Also it helps to showcase the slow build up of Percy and Annabeth's relationship through the 5 books.
