    I'm a wedding videographer, and I've occasionally shot cut away clips with my 13pro and after some colouring, used it in the finished edit. Nothing major, just some wide scenic shots to make use of the HDR etc and sometimes using the time laps feature for showing the reception room filling up. Its a great tool to have in your pocket. I definitely see the day coming when an iphone brings pro quality video to the table.

    Absolutely, I think using a phone as an every day camera is a great idea idea for folks starting to explore their interest in photography/videography. It gives you the opportunity to explore using the manual settings without needing to invest in expensive gear when your palette is not refined yet to have a preference.

    Very well summarized points. As someone who uses both a DSLR and an iPhone, I think the phone is a great option not just for someone starting off on their photography journey, but also for amateurs and semi professional hobbyist photographers who can't carry bulky equipment everywhere. Its a great device and getting better with every incoming model, so I guess its a matter of time before they equal if not surpass DSLR's for most shooting requirements.

    I have the 14 Pro Max and I absolutely love the raw photos which can easily be edited in the native camera app, Snapseed, LR, PicsArt, they take a ton of space up, but, fantastic and I find myself using raw more and more now. Awesome phone this year, flawless, beats the Pixel hands down when compared to my 6 Pro from last year! Cheers! ❤️🇬🇧

    Almost a year ago I started using my Xiaomi 9T as my main (and only) camera for RUclips and it was the best decision ever. I've been improving my workflow in the last couple months so is now a breeze to shot videos. I don't use the native app camera because is trash (at lest for this) and I wouldn't change it for another camera unless not at the moment I guess, because I'd need to readapt to a new workflow. Phones are powerful as fuck, the fact we can shot pictures and videos with a tiny device amazes me all the time. The convenience, portability, decent quality and easy use is great. I'd like to test an iPhone tho, I'm keen to the mini series because I find it have the best form factor.

    Just a reminder. Every camera HAS depth of field.
    Using wider apertures result in a SHALLOWER depth of field. Meaning there's LESS that's in focus.
    Using a phone or a narrower aperture results in a WIDER depth of field. Meaning there's MORE that's in focus.
    Wider aperture = shallower depth of field = LESS depth of field = blurry background.
    Narrower aperture = Wider depth of field = MORE depth of field = Background is more in focus/sharp. =)

    Good review. Three things you didn’t mention which factored into me buying and just carrying an iPhone 14 Pro max. 1. I kept shooting my DSLR in low light because the iPhone was crap in low light. Recent versions including this one are pretty good. 2. Yes iPhones are expensive but compare that to a good camera body and 3 fixed lenses like I have. The iPhone starts to look like a bargain. I’m not a pro like you. I never print and blow up my pics to 8x10’s or larger. For social media and little 4x6 prints for photo books, the pictures look awesome. Anyway, I’ve stopped reading camera reviews and I’m just using my new phone.

      if you compare the non RAW photos from the main camera vs RAW 48mp from the same 24mm lens on the iphone, you will notice the difference in the clarity when you zoom and also image quality. If you zoom a lot then it will distort eventually at a point, but its more than enough for a 32 inch monitor or a print size that big. Day time image processing will be much better. The night mode with RAW delivers only 12mp images while without night mode, the image will be less exposed but full 48 mp. ( also be aware that 48mp is only for the main 24 mm lens and the ultra wide and 2x will deliver 12 mp images )

    The ability to shoot in ProRAW has changed the game for me. I've been able to capture things I never though possible, and things that would not be possible on any DSLR or mirrorless, at least not without a lot more effort. The latitude these files give me has let me be more creative than ever, and I love testing the limits of what it can do.

    • @Mehwhatevr
      @Mehwhatevr Год назад +1

      i think this is the best point. it's the theme I keep seeing again and again. For someone who knows what they're doing, the 14 Pro is not a DSLR replacement, it's a companion. It's another tool on your photography toolbelt. Steak knives are great, but you still want a pocket knife. You don't want to carry the steak knife around everywhere, even if it is superior. and the 14 Pro will let you capture the moments that you are not prepared for.

    It's a great versatile & efficient camera, but I have to mention one thing that has been hard for me to work around. I have a 14 pro and the software processing apple does to their images is becoming less helpful and more of a hassle. It started with their now built-in HDR mode (can't turn it off), which flattens the shadows & highlights too much-there are times I'd love to get the same image I see on the screen when i press the 'shutter' button but when i go in the photos app to view the photo, apple bakes in all the enhancements before you get to edit that photo. But beyond that, their feature of highlighting the object in the foreground (the person being photographed for example) puts an additional filter on that object, washing even more highs&lows out. Does anyone else struggle with this because I haven't been seeing this be talked about a whole lot. Is the only workaround right now to take raw photos instead to avoid the hdr & contrast processing?

    • @sundaynightdrunk
      @sundaynightdrunk Год назад +4

      The workaround is to shoot raw, expose for the hightlights and bring shadows back in editing. Much cleaner shots, but you have negatives of file size and slow shooting.

    I think you hit the nail on the head there. Like, at what point does Apple just slap the biggest sensors they can om an iPhone? Instead of incremental upgrades. You see so much more experimentation with hardware from the chinese brands like Xiaomi and their 1 inch sensor. Imagine that but with Apple’s software. If they went all out maybe there would be little in terms of upgrades for next year and thus the whole yearly new iteration of phones would kinda fall apart idk…

    I still come back to this idea WHY do we compare mobile camera phone devices to DSLR's? It's like comparing watercolor to oil - the medium is different. Let's take it for what it is - an entirely different digital imaging medium. Polaroid - be it film, cannot be compared to 35mm film or similar. The lens, the medium/chemicals are their own thing and produce their own images. I'd like to see a review about the iPhone camera itself without DSLR comparisons - as if the iPhone or similar work in a deficit of something else. I would like to see Moment remake this video from that perspective. I've been a fan of Moment for what they have done with their mobile lenses and mobile phone photography - I think standing on that is important instead of making a review anyone who's making reviews about iPhone's vs DSLR's has done. I will end with this statement a student of mine said to his group that he was working with in class, "We ain't got to be nothing but what we already are!" :) Thank you Moment for everything you do.

    He doesn't seem to understand: the iPhone has too much depth of field not "no" depth of field. It means field of focus. Wide angle lenses provide great depth of field.

    Surprising comments coming from a Moment person! Traditional cameras are history and becoming niche items. I travel exclusively with late model ProMax iPhone (14) and a super zoom (RX10III). When Apple can give me acceptable 600mm image from an iPhone I will ditch the Sony.

    The iPhone is the everyday carry camera and camcorder champ for millions. It has a ways to go before it displaces purpose built cameras, if ever. The ‘iPhone look’ is a real thing, and not always pleasing to the eyes. ProRAW comes close to mitigating against this, but it’s too slow and the files are too large. In a sense, the iPhone is already the camera for the masses. Apple already has achieved that objective. Not sure that they even have a desire or need to improve their cameras much further? Why chase the law of diminishing returns when you are already ‘good enough’ as an everyday carry?

    you’ve got this totally wrong: these phones/lenses DO have a lot of depth of field. A lot means more is in focus, vs a shallow depth of field which means only a smaller plane is in focus…. 🤦🏼‍♀️

  • @vermontmike9800

    The lenses are bigger because the sensor is larger in the main camera. Whereas the telephoto lens has a tiny sensor that is about a quod the size of the main camera. That’s why the telephoto camera’s 8mage quality sucks.

    I think you have it backwards. Phones HAVE a lot of depth of field (everything is in focus) . They DON'T HAVE a shallow depth of field (foreground in focus with background out of focus).

      “Depth of field” is technically the cameras ability to split what’s in front of the camera from what is behind them…. therefore giving the viewer the impression of division of the 2 subjects ( say person + environment ).
      Due to the fact, as you rightly say, that cameras place focus on everything and this division between the subject and environment is lost you therefore lose the depth of field… from an aesthetics perspective…. So he is technically right when he says a phone has no depth of field… it simply doesn’t.
      I’m unsure what your perspective is here in terms of what you determine as “depth of field” unless you mean a phones depth of field goes to infinity which could be argued but this point would be too technical for the audience that he is trying to reach with this video.

    7:40, this is probably the most interesting part of this review in my opinion, because I love filmmaking. The video qualities are pretty much identical from at least 12 to 14, including all the base models and the pros. So, does that mean the bigger lenses and the bigger censor sizes do not make a difference? Then, as someone who aspires to filmmaking, I can just pick the cheapest one and save the money for other stuff.

    Nah. I don't know. I am still using my iPhone 8 Plus. I hardly ever used my phone as a camera and still don't - mostly because it's inconvenient AF. The phone's ergonomics suck. No good grip, can't hold and operate it with one hand conveniently, you gotta start the app, yada yada yada. And phones are expensive for what they are. The iPhone is now a thousand bucks.
    I keep avoiding the upgrade of my iPhone 8 Plus - I spent that kind of money on actual cameras, with actual image quality, actual ergonomics and usability. I LOVE my Ricoh GR III - and Ricoh GR IIIx. Both are better camera than the iPhone for photography. But each to their own. Shoot with the gear that inspires you. Phones and their horrible ergonomics don't inspire me to photograph.

    Also the HDR images make the pictures super unnatural - it’s soooooo far away from DSLM cameras. On top of that it drains battery pretty quickly AND flaring is horrible on iPhones …

    Let’s face it - all the juicy glorious resolution DSLRs create is lost in today’s most frequently used display options. It really only matters if you are making BIG physical prints. Computer screens, iPads, even 4K displays are all relatively low resolution output devices compared to prints. Generally speaking these electronic devices “dumb down” the file to make it fit on our screens. Even if you print a book of images - the maximum resolution is 300 dpi in an image that generally runs smaller than 11x14 inches. It’s just not worth it - especially if you are converting analog film to a digital file - that’s a huge loss of resolution and dynamic range.
    First I stopped carrying my 4x5 camera, a tripod, and three prime lenses. then I stopped carrying my DSLR and it’s three prime lenses. Now I bring my latest version iPhone with a few filters, an anamorphic lens, a gimbal, and a lens cloth. My whole kit fits in a small bag or some big pockets. I do not miss my old gear at all.
