    The underexposure is purely down to Lightroom's reading of the file. The ProRAW files contain a lot of computational data that doesn't display well with LR's default profiles. The files are technically under, over and properly exposed at the same time haha. LR seems to take the underexposed data as it's base preview at the moment. I would class that as a bug, Though - as others have mentioned - you can use the Apple profiles to apply a curve to fix it.

    • @JonnyRoams
      @JonnyRoams  Год назад +3

      Upon more testing I don’t think it is a bug as it only happens with the 48 megapixel sensor. I think it’s just under exposing to not clip the highlights. Plus, I’ve tested the pro raw color profile and I feel it’s too heavy handed with the tonal adjustments

    so many people underestimate RAW. some old phones like the Huawei Nova 5T has 48MP RAW back in 2019. you could crop that (tripod stabilised) edited RAW shot to 0.5MP and it will still look good. I shot extremely detailed shots in the woods. all the leaves are clear and sharp. very nice shadow falloff. The RAW files are 96MB! so much detail in there when in the right hands. but I edited iphone 14 pro max raw files too. They got more dynamic range because of the stacked photos. but in terms of detail retention, the Nova 5T eats it. Reach me out if u wanna take a look at them. I'll be glad to send them to U :)

    i have a Canon 5dsr 50mp full frame camera that takes some amazing photos if you have good light and a tripod.
    I also have the iphone 15 Pro Max. I just took a few photos with both to compare resolution and am really blown away by the iphone's 48mp proraw images. It's really shocking how close these 2 are in resolution. Considering the tiny iphone sensor vs the full frame sensor should be no match, I have to attribute this to iphone's computational software. It's absolutely crazy what they have been able to do.
    It would be great if they could add 48mp sensors to each of the lenses, but for now the 24mm lens is enough for me to make this an everyday carry around camera.

    I was planning to buy 14 PRO, but I decided to wait for 15. I was probably expecting more then what they offered with 14. But RAW is a key to get the most out of any phone these days :) and I can get decent photos even from my old iP XR when I shoot in RAW. If they can bring 48mpx sensor also for ultra wide, it would be perfect. Hope it will be in IP 15, also with USB C to get better transfer speeds.

      Ultrawide 48 mpix: almost 0%.
      The uw sensor is much smaller and has been upgraded to iphone 14 pro. Very unlikely will change in next gen.
      On the 15 they will upgrade the telephoto lens, usb-c and probably smaller upgrades.

      @@awesomeagnihotrisvlog indeed. I mean everything is subjective, but for me the camera is really crucial point. If you are willing to spend time to deal with raw photos, than it is mindblowing. The details and the information is similar what you can expect from an interchangeble lens camera with 1" sensor. The video is even better, with the new stabilization and/or cinematic mode, you can make videos you never thought before, at least not from a phone.
      If you are not using the camera that much, than an iphone 11 is more than enough, but I could say the same to iphone 8 what I have before the 11 pro (and now 14 pro).

    Great review. All those people who say the new iPhone isn’t a worthwhile upgrade over the 13 Pro are clearly not photographers. The 48mp sensor blows my mind considering it’s still just a phone. For portraits at 24mm the detail and sharpness is insane. You just need to zoom in and see the difference.

    • @wafzaf
      @wafzaf Год назад

      Well, you just answered it yourself : people that dont see a point in upgrading are not mobile photographers. Photographers walk around with their main camera all the time anyway, and for them, most of the time pictures or videos taken on their phone are purely for entertainment or for social media (which ultimately degrades the quality anyway once you upload them).

      In my perception, the 14 Pro Max is first of all a high school kids telephone, a fake status symbol. They work many hours filling shelves in the supermarket to get their hands on one. Especially for the poorer kids, they seem to gain respect for that, while the rich-kids are frawned upon if they have one.

    • @zimablue3166

      I don't care about status, but the 14pro in black is such a beautiful phone and one day i have enough savings to purchase one:)

    You're right, the camera improvement on the 14 Pro and 15 Pro are significant, but you're also right, phone Cameras will never match up Pro Grade Cams. Optics will always win software enhancements.

      They normally would be but a lot is going on behind the scenes, let me elaborate. The sensors are BSI and stacked and readout is very fast. Apple is using the fast sensor readout in combination with their Neural Engine image pipeline to process multiple exposures taken from the camera in several 10s of milliseconds. The Apple ProRAW is not really a single exposure image. They are (probably) doing things like mean averaging to push detail into those shadows while retaining highlights. And probably many other more advanced things.

    The ProRAW file is not under exposed. If you go into Develop and switch the profile from "Apple embedded profile" to "Apple ProRAW profile, I think you will find a well exposed image.

    • @JonnyRoams
      @JonnyRoams  Год назад

      The raw file is underexposing to preserve the highlights. The ProRaw color profile actually bakes in some edits (set the slider to 0 and you’ll see the same dark raw image)

    • @ray3maxwell
      @ray3maxwell Год назад

      I would also point out that if you open the ProRAW file in Apple Preview, you will see that it is properly exposed. Since I am a print maker I use Bridge and Photoshop and have found that if I select the Apple ProRAW profile in Bridge, the file looks completely normal as a starting point. The only problem is opening the ProRAW file in an Adobe product and not switching from the Apple embedded profile to the Apple ProRAW profile.

    • @ray3maxwell
      @ray3maxwell Год назад +1

      BTW...I agree with you that there is a bug...however...I don't believe that the bug is in the Apple ProRAW fiIe...rather, I believe that the bug is that the Adobe product is applying the wrong profile when it opens the file. Switching to the Apple ProRAW profile overcomes this bug.

    • @ray3maxwell
      @ray3maxwell Год назад +1

      The latest update to both Bridge, Photoshop, Camera RAW, and Lightroom now corrects the bug I mentioned in the last reply. All of the Adobe products now open a Apple ProRAW file with the Apple ProRAW profile and as you can see the exposure is now normal. BUG FIXEDl...

I have no idea the indifference, from a guy shooting with a RED camera.
