Good morning sir Matt. That was the name my dad would call me lol. Cool little pattern. I will be tying some of these for the box. Thank you for sharing this one. Have a great day and stay safe my friend.
Great lookin fly Matt.I don't add many flies to my box,but going to add this one.I shyed away from foam for years, but came to relay like it.Hey was going to order a book,Forgoten Flies.Won't be getting this book. The cost blew my mind,$500.ooHave a good day my friend. Ken
We’re downsizing & I was looking through my old magazines to sort what to keep & saw an ad for Forgotten Flies. The original advertised price was $89.95.
Wow, $90 for a book was expensive back in the late 90s, but it wasn't prohibitively so. I've been seeing it on Amazon and Ebay recently in the $500 price range.
I have been using this pattern for 20 or more years. Better than the Sofa pillow for supporting heavy weighted nymphs. Still use both patterns. Also, add short loops of 20 # mono to allow adjusting the length of the dropper tippet with cutting / replacing tippet. This method is as done in Mikie Weir's Hoppicator fly.
Another great fly Matt. Not sure if I can get elk hair but it wont be a problem to substitute something else. At least the foam is easy to find. Have a great day.
You do Todd! Lots of patterns I tie for the channel, just for fun and to learn something... but this one is getting a whole row in my terrestrial box. :-)
Good morning, Matt. That's a nice, easy hopper pattern. Come summer, hoppers are a staple on streams, ponds and lakeshores. Great for hopper/dropper rigs. Thanks, again, for another fun session.
Good day Matt. Great hopper! Thank you for not making me wait until Saturday. Looks simple, but it's always "looks" simple. I'll try my hand at it. Have a blessed day.
You bet Nich! I was planning on doing a hopper for Saturday, but just realized that Sunday is Mother's Day so I'll need to do the next installment of the Holiday Name-the-fly Streamer on Saturday. :-)
Hi from Rolla Missouri 🎣🤠 Dave This clodhopper is a wonderful looking fly for bigger fish in my opinion and will work with a dropper. Looks like I'll have to get my 7wt out with a weight forward floating line. Thanks for your time and thoughts on this fly. Wishing you well for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes
Man I love terrestrial time a year! Good afternoon Matt☕️☕️just got in from being on the water that why I am so late in watching. It’s was a good day on the water 👍
I love this little hopper!! I am definitely going to be tying this one up for my up coming fly fishing trip!! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern!! Have a great weekend Matt!
Ha! Haven't heard that in years. 🥾😂My mom use to say that, so we'd say that to each other as kids. I can see how the pattern got it's name, clever. Nice one Matt, thanks.
Good morning Matt. Enjoyed the hopper pattern today. My list of flies to tie is getting pretty long but I’m thinking this one might get added. Was out last night with the fly rod again just to give me some work. A little less rust this time out. Time to get a move on. Take care Matt.
There you go John! A lot of the flies I tie on here are just for fun, or learning new things. But I'm actually adding a row of these to my terrestrial box. I think it's going to do well!
Good looking hopper, want a give this one a try for sure, vary colors in the green and brown range and I think it will be very affective .Thanks Matt tight line my friend, good luck on your next outing. Denny
Oh yeah Denny. This in tan or a light green looks like our naturals here. But I do a similar one in pink and purple and it's crazy how those things do so well some days!
Thanks Matt. Looks like a good hopper pattern. I tied some of those bullet head hoppers that you did in March. They came out good and it gave me a chance to use those Griffin bullet head tools that I bought decades ago!
Oh man, I've never tried those! I just watched a video on it and now I need some. Is the Griffin one the same as this Renzetti? ruclips.net/video/et66L1tRftQ/видео.html
@@SavageFlies Yes Matt. The Griffin tools came in a pack of three sizes and look and work like those Renzetti tools. The Griffins were cheaper no doubt. The outer rings appears to be black Delrin and the centers are black rubber. They work well for me because my hands are fairly large!
Another nice fly Matt. The only thing I can think to try is maybe tying knots in the back leg but who knows if the fish even notice. Keep the good stuff coming.
I've wondered the same thing about knotting the back legs. I do it often enough to get that little bend, but yeah, I'm wondering if it makes a difference to the fish. Probably not. :-)
Now that my trout season is over until fall, time to start filling up the bass box, I figure a half dozen or so of these won't look too out of place. Heck I might just fill a box, I picked up a couple in the smokies after all!
Funny you mention that David, I just started a bass fly box last year. I usually keep a small terrestrial box with all my trout boxes, but big hoppers take up a lot of space! Now I've got separate streamer boxes, terrestrial boxes, and what I used to call my "warmwater box" and of course a dozen or more regular trout boxes. Oh man, I need to get more organized!
Foam bodied terrestrials are always a fun tie for me. I have some sisal rope that I have wanted to try out and am going to see how the fibers work for the wing on this one. Figure it's worth a try. As always, thanks for another interesting fly and the history behind it!
One of the books I recently picked up. No promises but prices have dropped during the warm season in the past when less tying occurs and looking thru supply wouldnt be surprised to see that happen this year.
Thank you Matt. Great looking Hopper. Looks fun to tie. Great tip on the part about keeping them from popping right back to the surface. Never thought about that before. Poor fish slaps it and right back up. Condensing the foam with wraps, awesome. Great video. Thank you for sharing this with all of us my friend. One quick question to you Matt or anyone that sees this please. I’m looking for a decent headband type of magnifier lenses. Any suggestions? There’s only about a hundred types to pick from. Thank you all.
That's actually a great idea Randy! I'm going to try this, but I wouldn't have to shrink it too much as our crickets here are almost as big as the grasshoppers.
Will this work for all species of fish? It looks like it would work for just about all fish,, thank you for the tips and ideas,,,, peace, love, and tight lines
Oh my, I haven’t heard “clod hopper”since when I moved to Kansas. When I heard the term & asked about it, I got the same definitions. This fly doesn’t look cloddish so I’m not sure the designer picked the right spelling to honor his friend, Claude. It looks effective.
Easy to tie..love hoppers..I’m in! Call me Clod. Thanks Matt!👍👍 I’m gonna use your suggestion and tie a midge dropper to my bigger hoppers..I’ll let you know what happens. I was bringing in a big perch yesterday on #12 llano bug with 3wt and a 5lb bass came up and swallowed it. Had a great fight for a minute or so but she finally spit the perch out. Also lost a 6-7lb on 8wt using #4 hook with black leech pattern the day before. Going back with big 1/0 flys to hopefully land one of these girls!😅 I’ll keep you posted. Have a great one my friend! 🎣
Holy cow Charlie; that's a great story! I've heard of this happening and have had big fish chase the little fish I've had on the line, but never had one eat the little guy. And losing that 6-7 pounder? That's a heart breaker! Definitely keep me posted. I'd love to see a picture of a 5+ pound bass caught on a fly rod!
Good morning sir Matt. That was the name my dad would call me lol. Cool little pattern. I will be tying some of these for the box. Thank you for sharing this one. Have a great day and stay safe my friend.
Thanks Karl! And you know I always appreciate your comments my friend. :-)
That's a neat looking hopper, Matt.
Thanks Jim! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Nice tie, Matt!
Appreciate it Gordon! Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
That one will work! Thanks, Matt!

Thanks Matt I really like these Hoppers I think I can do this one easy have a great weekend my friend
Absolutely Marty! Most foam body hoppers like this (with the fold over head) are pretty simple ties. :-)
I have been using this pattern for 20 or more years. Better than the Sofa pillow for supporting heavy weighted nymphs. Still use both patterns. Another great fly Matt. Not sure if I can get elk hair but it wont be a problem to substitute something else. At least the foam is easy to find. Have a great day.
Oh yeah Ken. Deer hair isn't much different. In fact, I really tie most of my Elk Hair Caddis patterns with deer hair anyway. :-)
Cool Hopper ! Looks like I "need" this one in my box too! Thanks Matt
You do Todd! Lots of patterns I tie for the channel, just for fun and to learn something... but this one is getting a whole row in my terrestrial box. :-)

Absolutely Ed! Some of the best fishing around here is in the warmer months with these big bugs. :-)
Super cool fly Matt!! “That dog will hunt!” Thanks Matt for sharing the pattern and the history behind it!!
You're most welcome James! I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Hi Matt! Nice buggy looking fly! great for warm summer evenings.
Absolutely Eduardo! I love warm weather terrestrial season around here. :-)
Thanks for sharing Matt. Simple fly to tie, As always I appreciate the simplicity have a blessed day my friend.

I see that! I've never been striper fishing with a fly rod but I'll bet they're some pretty good fighters. :-)
@@SavageFlies We used conventional tackle and it was crazy fun. But like you said I would really enjoy doing that with my fly pole🤣🤣🤣👍
I love this little hopper!! I am definitely going to be tying this one up for my up coming fly fishing trip!! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern!! Have a great weekend Matt!
You too Barbara! Good luck on the trip!!
Hoppers always catch fish. Will give it a try. Thanks for sharing Matt 👍. Tight lines.

So complex looking. A great instructor to mentor from, not to shabby.
Well thank you Casey! I appreciate the kind words my friend. :-)

Thanks Joe! I never knew a person could be called a clod hopper, but always knew it as big clunky shoes. :-)
Hoppers never go wrong!
Absolutely Gary! It's my favorite time of year on the water. :-)
Gorgeous looking hopper Matt
Looks easy, definitely going to try this one
Thanks for the video
Definitely Dave! I don't think we can go wrong with a few of these in our terrestrial boxes. Thanks for the note my friend. :-)

Always appreciate it Sally! Thanks for watching my friend. :-)
Although dried and streamers are my go to flies I'm a sucker for terrestrials. I do like this one.
take care.
Same here Frank! I'll fish dries whenever possible but streamer fishing can be a blast too. :-)
Thanks Matt, for another great helpful video. Another one added to my Savage List 👍
No, thank YOU John. I always appreciate the notes my friend. :-)

That's a great idea Troy. I think a sisal rope is similar enough to a burlap - and could make a cool looking wing. Or at least a buggy body. :-)
Very nice Matt!! Will see how it comes together when I try it lol.
I'm sure you'll nail it Scott. And if it's a little shabby, fish it anyway! They don't seem to mind. :-)

Great video and a cracking fly Matt, that one will be getting a swim over here 100%...i must buy shares in an American foam company ;-)

I think the foam body on this thing could be used for a caddis fly. Might be a great hopper for a dropper.
Oh yeah Andrew. I think you could cut the foam smaller and put this on a smaller hook and it would make a fine caddis!
I bet you could drop the size and switch to black foam and hackle, then swap out the elk for dark moose hair for a nice cricket pattern too... 😀
That's actually a great idea Randy! I'm going to try this, but I wouldn't have to shrink it too much as our crickets here are almost as big as the grasshoppers.
I like this one ☝️ I think most hopper patterns are way over complicated. Nice clean tie
Appreciate it Matt! And I agree, sometimes we get a little carried away. I know I certainly do with adding flash and knotted pheasant tail legs.

Matt, that foam was not very centered on that hook.
