Good morning Matt!! I’m in northeast Ohio and we are getting hit with a ton of snow so it’s a good day for tying up some Flys!! This one looks awesome and pretty easy so I’m gonna make up a few thanks again for all you do bro !!
Good morning Matt☕️☕️ The UV resin on the wing was absolutely brilliant 👍 I may have to give it a go😉 we are in NC visiting our granddaughter. I brought my gear but will see if I get out 🤣🤣🤣
Welcome to NC Jim.The place to be if you fly fish.I'm in Franklin,in the western part of the state.I take my travel bag for tying ever where I go,and my fishing gear too.And have fun,if you dont, your doing it wrong.Tight lines my friend. Ken
Good morning Matt. Having coffee wondering what will he come up with today. This is a very cool pattern. Will be tying a few of these up for the box. Thank you this one an showing this technique. Have a great day stay safe my friend.
Great looking fly 🎣🤠 . I,'ve watched panfish just go nuts for one of these. They even jump in the air to get them. Lots of fun!!! Thanks for your time and knowledge, good health for you and your's Dave Hughes
Good morning Sir. That is a cool little fly. Looks fun to tie. Thank you for sharing this technique. Will definitely be tying a few of these up. Great video Matt.
GM Matt. Great pattern! I actually just picked up some furry foam at the Fly fishing show in NJ that I think will work great for this. Will def be tying some tonight when I get home. Have a great day!
This is a great pattern. I stopped doing the segmented body and just use a strip of foam ( leave a lot of these on reeds...) The one thing I really recommend is figuring out what color the tenerals are. That olvie/brown/gray stage can be hot. Fish sometimes key on those getting knocked off the weeds before they can fly. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Great tip Kris! If I tied and fished these a lot I might do the same thing. But honestly I think I tied up four damsel/dragonflies last year and probably only fished them twice. (But I did fool a couple of bass one day. And that was a blast!)
Good stuff. That's certainly an easier tie, Matt. I used to tie and fish a wet version that I called a "Drowned'sel." It had a furled yarn extended body and feather wings. It worked well on still waters.
That sounds really cool Jim. I'll bet that thing was a fairly slow sinker and you got a lot of takes just a few inches under the surface. Great idea for a unique pattern!
Thanks Jack! I appreciate the kind words. But I can tell you that they're not all easy for me. I started last night tying a Barnes' Special streamer, but after a couple of practice ones it was proving too hard to get a good enough tie to make a video of. So I picked this next one off my to-do list. :-)
Another fly tie you made look easy Matt. On one of our trips out to the Driftless last year my wife kept commenting on the "pretty blue bugs", this was what they were! Guess what I just added to my shopping list? Thanks again Matt!
Ha! Thanks Todd. This 2mm foam is straight from Walmart. And I can't think of another pattern that I would use blue foam for so if you get some, you'll have a lifetime supply. :-)
Oh man, I did a hellgrammite last year. I didn't make a video of it because it was a big mess! But I did fish it a few times. I'm pretty sure I never caught anything with it but I've still got those shaggy ones in one of my boxes. Anyway... I'll put it back on my to-do list. I just might need to practice it a little more. :-)
Good Morning Sir Matt, I saw the video this morning and now at work commenting. It's 3 degrees with a -20 wind chill. I really like this version of this Damselfly, and the uv resin on the wing (great idea). I've done a few extended deer hair body ones, that was fun. thank you sir. be safe in the storm.
How the heck is it colder in Texas than it is in Maryland?? And by a lot! I had to drive down to Virginia today ant it was 70 degrees. I'm not kidding! So no storm here today, but it's going to be cold again by Saturday. :-)
Hi Matt.Dams are good flies here for pond fish, never see them up in the mountains.I tie extended body flies down to 16,18 ,and 20 .Use one small piece of foam on a very small needle.Ever segment is whiped finished.I'm pushing myself to the limlt.I tie a fly I don't think is up to par,I slice it of with a razor blade and start again.I have a goal in life, better than Charlie,Davie Mac and don't leave out Barry. All are the best in the world,my mentors. Have a great night Matt, from the GSM of NC. Ken
Great tips Ken! We're mostly the same here in Maryland and I see these and dragonflies a lot more on bass ponds and lakes. But there are a few on the rivers too. I'm not sure I would attempt to tie a foam extended body on something like an 18 or 20! Maybe someday when I'm a little more experienced. Thanks for the note and have a great weekend!
Damsels and Dragons work really well, cold water and warm water.Their biggest problem is line twist, absolutely a minimum of false casting.I have always used crystal flash for the wings. It gives it the sheen that they have.Try it.
Hi Matt! Thanks for this great easy pattern. Here in Vielha, Spain I have a lake close by where there are many damsels and dragons flies now in spring and summer. Definitely going to tie some and have a go.
Outstanding Erik! These things are clunky to cast, but they do look pretty cool on the surface. I think if you get the right body color for the ones in your water, and roughly the same size, you could have a lot of fun. :-)
@@SavageFliesHi Matt! This patters works fantastic. Only thing to mention is that the takes are so strong that normally the trout breaks the tail. But it’s good fun.
No kidding David! We had a break in the weather here today, but any damselflies we have right now are still nymphs. :-) But come June and July, they'll be out!
You bet Jeff! And one of the coolest things about fishing big bugs like this one and other hoppers, sometimes the worse we do at casting, and the bigger the splash we make, the better they work. Not always, but sometimes I've had some loud presentations with hoppers which seemed to really get a fish's attention. :-)
Ha! You know I'll never discourage anyone from supporting a fly shop, but I tell you, I use this foam for a lot of my hoppers and flies like this. www.walmart.com/ip/Go-Create-Foam-5-5-x-8-5-Rainbow-Sheets-50-Sheets/230442577
Matt Dude love your vids the history, your presentation, the music choices. Thinking salmonfly tied like this. Living in North Idaho we love the salmonfly hatch and the north face cutties.
Thanks Anthony! I've heard some major fish tales about your famed salmonfly hatch. Aren't they big yellow bugs? I'm sure you could do something like this extended body for them. Speaking of Idaho, I got to take a float trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River back in 2020. That was the first time I'd ever fished for cutthroat but man, that was an amazing trip. Thanks again for the note and the kind words. :-)
Gorgeous looking fly Matt Definitely going to put this on my bucket list Thanks for sharing about waxing the needle and putting glue on the wings Thanks for the video Matt
Matt, as usual great tutorial - the uv gel on the wings is a great tip but i did that tonight and forgot to wipe off my fingers then managed to pass the uv light over my finger tips. Ouch, burnt them good , so I wont forget to clean my hands first from now on. Again thanks for some awesome videos
Nice pattern. I've shied away from tying these for bass and bream because the wing tends to make the fly spin during casts. This wing looks like it should cast just fine.
Yes! I know exactly what you're talking about. I haven't fished this exact one but I have had that problem with some feather wing dragonfly patterns. And, the feathers are usually so flexible that sometimes they'll get wrapped behind the hook bend.
Matt, sweet.. Why do you want the wing harder? In my mind I want to be able to powder that up to keep it floating, never fished a damsel so I don’t know hell I honestly have never seen a trout take one!! Nope., I’d like to get one to eat now!!!
Great question Scott! First, for a synthetic material like this there isn't much need to gink it up or shake it in a desiccant. One backcast that the thing is practically dry. But stiffening the wings on a pattern like this will keep them from getting wet and sticking to the side of the fly. And if they flop around too much, they will have a tendency to get caught behind the hook and then it would look like a one-wing dragon or damsel fly. Having the wings sticking out mostly perpendicular to the hook will mostly avoid both those scenarios. (I learned this through experience of tying feather wing ones that are really hard to fish and cast.)
Good one. Very useful tips - never thought of waxing the needle or folding the foam over (usually insert the needle in the foam or wrap the bucktail around it), & gluing the outside of the wings. I would test using Flexament & flexible UV resin on the wings to see which one was better. Are you using 1 mm foam or 2 mm?
Great idea Bob. This is 2mm foam. But in some of the dragonflies I tied last year (they're usually a little thicker) I did sandwich a piece of different color 1mm foam in it and it gave it a nice looking stripe down the sides. Re the Flexament, I've still got your email to digest on that one but will be placing an order within a week or so for sure. :-)
Thanks Joe! My tying videos are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. And if I do a book or tool review, or some other non-tying video that's usually on Sunday.
Sure, I can add that to my to-do list. I do know that I've showed the foam cutters I use in a few videos, but I can't remember offhand which ones they are.
Strange thing I've never seen a trout take a damsel fly, sat and watched thousands and not a single trout has shown any interest. Maybe damsels in the USA are tastier than ours 😂 another great video and fly Matt.
Matt, another great pattern. Looks simple. One question…. What is the synthetic for the wing? Is there a trade name or is it something from a craft store? Thx. Ok … google helped me. I see wapsi et al make this material. Is there a craft or hardware hack? Suppose the core of braided synthetic rope may do the trick.
Good morning Matt. Looks like we are building a Savage Flies coffee club on video days. Watched the needle section a couple times but have a question, what size, length do you use? I know they look bigger in camera view. Now I’m headed for a second ☕️. It’s -13F and -38F here with the wind chill but at least it’s supposed to sunny.
That's a good question! I have no idea how needles are sized. This one was from a little emergency button repair sewing kit. It had like three needles and I just grabbed the biggest one. As for the coffee club, yeah I love it! I'm usually up late the night before a video making it, then driving into work when it goes live at 7am. I'll occasionally get a chance to read some comments throughout the day, but I don't really have the time to respond until the evening. (Like right now.) But I love that I see so many regulars leaving comments first thing in the morning. :-)
What?! Sometimes RUclips is annoying. I'm usually cruising along with 15-20 new subscribers a day, and maybe 1-2 unsubscribes. But every once in a while I'll see 10+ people leave in a day. And after a little digging you'll see they said they did a "purge" of fake accounts. Maybe you just got caught up in one of these. But I do appreciate you still being here! And PS: go pick up a pack of this from Walmart. I bought some a couple years ago and haven't even used half of it. It is some crazy colors but it's exactly 2mm so works for a lot of patterns. www.walmart.com/ip/Go-Create-Foam-5-5-x-8-5-Rainbow-Sheets-50-Sheets/230442577
For the hard core entomologists….Damselflies are smaller than a dragonfly, at rest they close their wings and their eyes do not touch at the top of head. Their flight is weak and fluttering, they don't engage in aerial combat. Dragonflies are larger than damselflies. At rest their wings remain open and their eyes touch at top of head.
Yep, it's actually this stuff here. One pack of this will give you enough hoppers and foam bodies for a lifetime! www.walmart.com/ip/Go-Create-Foam-5-5-x-8-5-Rainbow-Sheets-50-Sheets/230442577
Interesting Dragon Fly ? ... Foam body , Yarn dubbing , Wool wings , UV resin and Polyester thread ... oh , and a Feather .... What happened to the traditional 4 Exotic dead animal materials you Tiers always use ? ... Isn't using Synthetics breaking tradition for you guys ? ... I saw a guy and his kid , catch fish with bits of garbage he found on the bank ... So you have to wonder , why you fly tiers need such Exotic Feathers and animal hairs to make a fancy Fly ? ... When you could make a Fly out of an old pair of socks , a chip bag and hair from your head , dog , cat or budgie ? ... But where is the Profit in that ? :D ... Cheers !
Hi Robert. I've never heard of the "4 exotic dead animal materials" rule you mention. There are a few tiers out there who shy away from using synthetics but for the most part today's modern tiers don't hesitate to mix synthetic and natural. And to your last question, we don't *need* exotic feathers and furs to make fancy flies. In fact, we don't even need to tie flies at all. Most of us do it as a hobby. For the craftsmanship and artistry of it. And because we enjoy it. :-) From this comment you sound like you're not a tier. If you're a fly fisherman, you should consider giving it a try! I find it to be quite a rewarding hobby. Even therapeutic at times.
@@SavageFlies Watching your Excellent Show got me wanting to tie flies again ! ... And your Flies are Beautiful ! .... I Bought a Rotary vice , bobbins , 100s of hooks , feathers , dog hair , yarns , thread , wires , etc ... But I don't have 1/100th the materials you guys use .... and I'm running out of space ! ... I'm just frustrated by the multitude of Materials you guys have and use ... and I want a KISS solution ! ... TYG for the Dollar Store and Macgyvered fly tying ...... Cheers :-)
That was a fun tie. I can't say I've tied any adult damsels or dragons 🧚♀ 🐉, only the nymphs. I love watching the adults on summer days in my yard. Some hang in the air currents waiting for bugs to drift by just like trout do in a stream. Thanks Matt. I thought you might have tied something with woodchuck for groundhog day. 🪵 🦔 🦫 🐻 🦦
I've never seen that Joe, but that does remind me of another story. I was at the top of a mountain in Hawaii (one of the few remaining wild trout streams there), and there were a bunch of HUGE dragonflies flying around. I'm talking six inches long. They looked like drones. So I try fishing the only one I had with me and it was about half the size of these naturals. The first time I cast to water where they're flying around, one of them swoops down and grabs my fly and takes off with it. He got about 20 feet away before the weight of my fly line snagged it out of his clutches. But holy cow, that was a first for me. It happened a couple more times that day too. :-)
@@SavageFlies WOW! 😱when dragons attack! A big green dragon went after a hummingbird then peeled off as I watched from the back porch. Nature, best show on earth!👍

Great looking fly Matt. About how long of a piece of foam do you make. The body out of. Thanks Again.
Thanks Mike! I think it's just kind of a guessing game. I suppose in the end you might want it to be about twice as long as the hook shank.
I need to pick up some foam. I've yet to try any kind of foam patterns.
Heads up. RUclips's playing games again...I noticed I was unsubscribed! 🤦♂️
It is some crazy colors but it's exactly 2mm so works for a lot of patterns. www.walmart.com/ip/Go-Create-Foam-5-5-x-8-5-Rainbow-Sheets-50-Sheets/230442577
will this pattern work for trout
Nice. What did you use to dry the wings?
For the hard core entomologists….Damselflies are smaller than a dragonfly, at rest they close their wings and their eyes do not touch at the top of head. Their flight is weak and fluttering, they don't engage in aerial combat. Dragonflies are larger than damselflies. At rest their wings remain open and their eyes touch at top of head.
Is that 2mm foam?
From this comment you sound like you're not a tier.
