- Is This The Simplest Dry Fly in the World To Tie?
Well it’s a pretty easy one to tie if you follow this step-by-step. And the result is perhaps one of the most effective imitations of an olive you’ll find anywhere. Subtle changes in hook size, and maybe the colour of the dubbing you use, will cover almost any eventuality. But simply, the ‘Simple Olive’ is a pattern that deserves a place in your dry fly box for almost any still water or river situation. Here it’s tied in a Size 14, but go bigger on a 12, or smaller on 16, 18 or 20 to give you the option you need to match the hatch.
Materials:
Hook: Hanak 130 BL in 14, 16, 18 or 20
Tying Thread: Olive Nanosilk
Tail: 3 x Coq de Leon Fibres
Wing: 3 x CDC feathers tips aligned (use 2 x feathers on Sizes 18’s and 20)
Dubbing: Semperfli Kapok Olive Dun
Hackle: Tip of a a small feather from a grizzle cape
Head: Pinch of Fox Squirrel - Спорт
Being a new to tie flying although I’m in my late 60’s Thanks so much for this simple olive pattern I tied it last year after seeing this video and caught fish every time 👍I’m currently trying 18 & 20’s ready for the start of this season in April
Wonderful!
Terrific video. When I return home to SC shortly and to fish in the Smokies, I intend to watch many more of your videos. Thanks!
Wow, that fly looks great to me, thank you for posting that!
Very nice ty! Tight lines🐛🕷️🐜!!!!!
Lovely fly, will be trying this tomorrow. Tried my very first fly today a grey wulff, maybe not the easiest fly to start on but my hook size was 14, tad small for a beginner so ill maybe try a few of yours at size 10 👍. Thankyou!!
Thanks for the step by step and layman terminology
Well said! I have always also held that confidence is the key element!
Excellent tie and explanation. Thank you.
just started tying great vid very easy to follow big thank you
Wow thanks for the excellently detailed instruction
Just made some 👍🏻 thanks for your excellent videos
Nice pattern and very thoughtful explanations! 😊
Love how the tail points down and slips around the hook, looks amazing.
That's not how it should be
Very nice and instructive video!
Thank you for a wonderful little fly.
Great video/fly... Thanks!
A very nice simple tie and one I will replicate for my upcoming trip to Tasmania.Just subscribed so looking forward to upcoming videos. Kindest regards from down-under in NZ.
Brilliant Mate !!! Thank You ✨🎣💫
Nice job on the fly.
Nice pattern and beautifully explained.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the video, beautiful!!
Lovely!
Nice alternative to a standard Adam’s and seemingly more forgiving
Yes and a lighter and more natural impression in the surface film than a fly tied with a more robust hackle too.
That looks great to me, well done I feel!
Thanks!
Nice thanks
Maybe it is easy to tie, but it looks very effective.
Love this olive! I will tie some up this weekend. IIf I wanted to turn it into a parachute adams, could I make the cdc white?
Hi Paula. Yes you could. Darker CDC is often easier to see though. Especially in bright conditions. Customising is always good fun.
I kinda feel like the Griffith's Gnat is less complicated than this. Or a glo-bug?
Think it depends on skill levels a bit maybe? Getting nice even turns of peacock and hackle without snapping the quill can be a pain.
Nicely tied but the are lots of dry flies you could have chosen that are far simpler to tie
At 2:57, the gap between the thread hanging down and the hook eye can’t possibly be 5mm - can it ?
🤷♂️
👍👍
Beautiful fly but most fly fishermen can’t keep a cdc fly dry.
Not the easiest - that would be a cdc and elk/deer hair sedge surely? A nice unfussy fly nevertheless that will catch fish. Thanks.
Well I’d say anything with elk/deer hair is a total pain in the backside, especially when you’re just starting to tie.
The F-fly is the easiest fly to tie.
There are others as well.
The superpupa
The Griffiths gnat
The shipmans buzzer
There are many that are easier and faster.
But yeah The easiest dry fly is the F-fly.
Various colors? Is that kapok a tan color? I believe that is what was or maybe still is, used in life jackets. Thanks
Not sure about the life jackets thing but that would make sense as it’s very buoyant for volume.
Update…..it was used in life jackets, but apparently no longer as it loses buoyancy over time.
"The world's easiest dry fly pattern"!!!
And therefore it takes a 20 minutes video!!! 😂😂😂😂
To make a video and explain yes. To tie if not making a video and explaining….no.
👌💪
