  • If we get 2 RTX 2070 Supers and NVLink them together, will this beat the biggest and most expensive GPU on the market - the RTX 2080 Ti? Well today we answer that question with 1440p and 4K testing.

      Artificial inflation. We should also have DX13 by now. Intel lagging behind in chipset advancements (ex. PCIE 4.0) and Nvidia not making compelling products (RTX is just Pascal rehashed, with AI cores and with GDDR6) is ultimately holding us back in PC gaming. The lower the price of the x80 card, the better the market is doing. We haven't had a decent x80 card for price/performance since the 980. Some might argue the 780 too.

      I like my 2 RTX 2080s SUPER. They crush games like Jedi Fallen Order, Borderlands 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2

    • @Patrick73787
      @Patrick73787 4 года назад +5

      Daniel lecho I have only 3 games in my game library for which I had to tweak the SLI profiles: Apex Legends (which originally came with SLI support but due to an engine modification lost it down the road), Borderlands 3 (which doesn't natively support SLI as an AMD sponsored title) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (which is coded for Vulkan multi-GPU but for whatever reason need a line of code to be modified in the system.xml game file and the game to be run in windowed borderless mode to properly run on RTX GPUs).
      Unreal Engine games like Borderlands 3, The Outer Worlds, Jedi Fallen Order and Ace Combat 7 are not the best when it comes to scaling but the NVLink can still brute force its way to 50-70% scaling depending where you are in the game world (However Borderlands 3 is a bad port that runs on one CPU core and as a consequence needs a 5GHz 9700K or 9900K in order to see any meaningful scaling). RDR2 support m-GPU through Vulkan and has almost perfect scaling. Dunia Engine games like Far Cry 5 and Far Cry New Dawn scale a bit like Unreal Engine games. CryEngine games like Kingdom Come Deliverance, Ryse Son Of Rome, (Hunts Showdown which I don't have) or Star Citizen offer 70-80% scaling with a good CPU. Frostbite Engine games games like Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Mirror's Edge Catalyst have perfect scaling. Source Engine games like Apex Legends and Titanfall 2 also scale perfectly. Games like Deus Ex series, Tomb Raider series, Overwatch, Rocket League, Destiny 2, Project Cars 2, F1 2019, MotoGp 19, TT Isle Of Man 2, offer 70-90% scaling. Those are my NVLink scaling results at 1440p max settings with an i9-9900K on a 1440p G-Sync 165Hz monitor (with a possible upgrade to 1440p 240Hz in the future). At 4K you should normally be in a more GPU bound scenario which should make those scaling numbers even higher.
      I don't have games like Resident Evil 3, GTA 5, Strange Brigade, Devil May Cry 5, Hunts Showdown, Sniper Elite 4, Zombie Army 4 or Hitman 2. But I know they offer great SLI performance as well.
      You should also be aware that some franchises abandoned SLI support. Battlefield 1, The Division 1, Call Of Duty Black Ops 4, Ghost Recon Wildlands and Gears Of Wars 4 had SLI support while Battlefield 5, The Division 2, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare, Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Gears 5 don't. I don't have Modern Warfare and Breakpoint but I have The Division 2 and Battlfield 5. Those games switched to DX12 and need the mulit-GPU support to be enabled directly by devs. Gears 4 already had DX12 multi-GPU support so it was quite disappointing to not see Gears 5 support it as well. Dirt 3 and Dirt Rally had great SLI support but Dirt 4 and Dirt Rally 2.0 need to have custom SLI profiles to properly work again.
      Other franchises didn't have SLI support but now support it. F1 2016, MotoGP18 and Ride didn't have SLI support but F1 2018, F1 2019, MotoGP 19 and Ride 3 do. There's also an increasing list of games for which SLI is exclusively supported on RTX GPUs like The Outer Worlds, Metro Exodus (with CFR SLI on DX12) and Ace Combat 7.
      If NVidia improve CFR SLI, many DX12 games will receive multi-GPU support at driver level like Metro Exodus did without the need for developer's intervention. That remains to be seen.

      @@poopipeboy3033 I remember in summer 2003, the most expensive video card available for sale in Southern Ontario was an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Looking on the WayBack Machine, it was C$519 2003 dollars. In 2019 dollars, that would have been C$690. Nvidia was a couple hundred cheaper. The cheapest 2080 Ti, same top tier bracket is now double the price of the top tier bracket in 2003. Nvidia is gouging us without competition.

    Either you get higher average FPS compared to a powerful single card solution, but trash framepacing, causing stutter. Or, you get lower than average FPS in comparison.
    All with the sweet taste of a higher power draw, and high temps too.
    So yeah, it works great. Unless it doesn't, which is like 99% of the time.

    SLI is indeed dead. The SLI setup rarely beats the 2080Ti on 0.1% low frame times.

    • @eliadbu
      @eliadbu 5 лет назад +3

      In most of the games in the past and present this is the case, this is due to limitation of AFR technology - each card render different frame and send the frame via the main card
      Due to different and inconsistent render time of each frame this can cause stutter which is seen in 1% and 0.1% low frame times. The hope is maybe with future API and games
      The benefits of NVlink throughput will be able to use the two cards as one unit solving the issue with AFR. but until then SLI(AFR in general) is de-facto the only way for using multi GPUs
      in most games.

      Back in the 6, 7, 8, and 9 series days (04-09), SLI was a very viable option. A higher percentage of games supported it, and there were some killer SLI setups. I had 3 different SLI GPU combos. One of them was a pair of 8800 GTs. Each card was $250, and offered about 90% of the performance of the top dog 8800 GTX, which was well over $500. The 8800 GTs in SLI absolutely demolished the GTX. As late as 2010-11, there were some good SLI options that made sense. The GTX 460 was killer in SLI.

It never worked proper, it's like being on hell for devs to optimize games for SLI/CrossFire, draw crazies amount of energy (not to mentioned the heat), introduce stuttering if not done correctly and the bugs, omg the bugs were everywhere (I never wanna own SLI/CrossFire ever again). Scale like sh&& and only works on some synthetics benchmarks.
    I understand the love that enthusiastic nourish for the tech (it's cool, can't deny it), but the pratical application of it is just not worth at all; even cards with two GPU's on a sigle pcb did not work well.
