  • This two-way NVLink RTX 2080 Ti benchmark tests vs. a single RTX 2080 Ti (vs. SLI 1080 Tis), alongside PCIe bandwidth at x16/x16 vs x16/x8 or x8/x8.

    These benchmarks test Sniper Elite, Far Cry 5, GTA V, F1 2018, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and more for the RTX 2080 & 2080 Ti vs. NVLinked 2080 Tis and SLI 1080 Tis. Test methodology is defined in the article above, for additional information, and expands testing for PCIe limitation testing when removing the NVLink bridge. This replaces SLI and the SLI HB bridges, but an HB bridge was used for the GTX 1080 Ti test in SLI.

      Troy Bantz Yeah, I get extremely good scaling with 2x Fury, I'll be trying out 4x scaling later when Threadripper gets here. 2x costs $400, and beats a Titan Xp (which is selling used for $800), hence I'll be testing 4x since its the same price.
      I'm hoping for 60k Firestrike graphics score (higher when overclocked), and should be around 100 fps in Crysis 3 at 4k Ultra (2x is already at "60 fps", which is way over 60 fps avg, but I'm talking minimums here, by comparison my Titan makes "45-50 fps" and choppy with inconsistent input lag making it terrible experience. Actual avg should be over 120 fps.

    • @Dullahan3470
      @Dullahan3470 5 лет назад

      The key to 2x scaling is to have a very low CPU load. If they did the same benchmarks at 150% render scale you would see better gains.

    Wanting to play a PC game immediately after release has become something of the past for me personally even with one card. I wait for around 6 months to a year before playing the "new releases" because you almost have to wait that long for all bugs to be squashed and experience the game to its full potential....

      I've learned to never buy a game after its launch, I wait 1 year, if the game runs nice and has players after 1 year then it means its a good game, many games are very bad on launch this days and many lose all player base after 1 year...

    • @fortisprocer966
      @fortisprocer966 6 лет назад

      It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out though. If I can get 2 used 1080Ti's plus watercooling setup for both for $1200 that is by far the better alternative. I think I'm just going to get one 1080Ti and wait to see if new cards come out next year. You're right though, a maybe works technology being better than new is pretty sad.

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 6 лет назад +2

      Sli is a "far better alternative"?
      To what? Eating a wasp's nest?
      Buy one 1080ti or buy one 2080ti. Or better yet, buy neither.
      I can't help but feel like all these people saying sli is a better choice, haven't actually owned an sli setup.

    • @Neutro1337
      @Neutro1337 5 лет назад

      You obviously never had an SLI setup before or you would not say that. Getting a 2080ti in mono GPU is much better than getting 2 x 1080Ti because SLI always has rendering and scaling issues compared to a mono GPU setup. Plus it doubles the power consumption, which turns your PC into a heater.

    I used multi GPU for a few years, including HD7950, R9 290x, and GTX780ti... and I don't know exactly how it is right now, but when I switched to a single GTX1080, I was suddenly blown away by the smoothness, even when running at similar average framerates. I decided then and there that I was done with multi GPU until some major changes occur in how the effect is achieved.
    I've been training my eyes for years to look for dropped frames, artifacts, and stuttering, and I've become quite good at it. This is both my blessing and my curse.

    • @PainX187
      @PainX187 6 лет назад

      SLI only for my part but yes it has stutter and artifacts in most cases ran 780TI Titans and 1080's in SLI and my one single reason for being done is the poor support for which i blame nvidia they should have made sure their tech worked not off loaded it on game devs

    • @dustinr26
      @dustinr26 6 лет назад +4

      I was same as you in terms of SLI back in day Crossfired Gigabyte HD 6870 back in 2011 then some other cards and last time I SLIed was the EVGA GTX 680 FTW cards then could not get Battlefield 4 to stop microstuttering after one of their updates never had issue and it popped up. Ended up going to Single EVGA 980 SC and was shocked how smooth and trouble free a single card was. Ever since the 980 upgrade the last 5 cards after that have been single no more SLI/Crossfire. It sucks since they have option to do dual cards on Mobos and it is just so poorly supported in the last few years. Seeing how SniperElite 4 is one in thousands of games it works as it should just sucks to see honestly. I was tempted to buy another 1080Ti vs upgrading to RTX cards for performance to price but after researching I didn't realize how bad they have dropped the ball on games supported and issues still within the Dual card arena.

    • @KingMysion
      @KingMysion 6 лет назад +3

      I remember pairing my R9-290 with a friends and the horrible scaling. The only game that ran well was Alien isolation. Metro 2033 ran much slower. SLI-Crossfire's always been a bit of a joke but the promise of more performance is always alluring.

    • @dustinr26
      @dustinr26 6 лет назад +3

      That's why I looked to grab another 1080Ti at Microcenter but then after researching made me remember how bad it had gotten and sounds like it is even worse now. Why even make NVlink and HB bridges if it is so horribly supported and just overall garbage?

    Nice video. I agree 100% iv had gtx970 sli and moved to gtx1080sli. Over the years sli has gotten better but it is rather frustrating at time. When it scales it amazing but most of the time it dosnt. Thats why I moved on to a single 2080ti to fit my needs. Im confident with recent benchmarks a single 2080ti will push my 21:9 1440p and my 240hz 1080p just perfect.

    When a card launch is so unimpressive it makes sli look good by comparison...
    Also if they've already got a 2080ti they're used to paying 2x for 30% uplift, it's practically a bargain to spend another 2x for 50% uplift in sli!

Especially when I'm only getting about a 30 fps boost over my current setup. If I was getting a 50-100% increase in frame rates I'd understand the price but with performance the way it is now it doesn't make sense to me to buy two 2080 Ti s.

      Most people complaining about problems with sli have never actually used it day to day. It works fine probably 80% of the time, and when it doesn't then you can just use the one card. Sure it's kind of lame, but without the second card you'd be in that situation 100% of the time.

    Steve: I gotta agree with so many others here: you guys made this soooo fun, and I really could'nt give less of a crap about 2080. Can't afford one anyway, lol. Just seeing Jayz slap-dash (but effective) "cooler", and Paul basically freak out (for him, anyway,hehe) was worth it! Bravo!!!

    I'm a long time SLI user. I have 2 RTX 2080s Founders Edition (non Ti) coming with NVLink bridge. I just wanted to sell and replace my 2 GTX 1080s. The 40% performance boost with same power consumption as my current setup is worth it to me. My current monitor is a 1440p G-Sync 165Hz panel. I don't recommend most folks to do like me but I know that ray tracing at 60 fps will require NVLink anyway.

    It will be nice to see how NVLink performs in VRay Benchmark, cuz the software gives an extra VRAM capacity boost by recognizing it as combined memory pool. It's a nice feature for 3D designers in Maya, 3Ds Max, Blender, C4D, etc. , especially when the production quality scenes are so memory hungry.

    Dear Nvidia, this is how you make a launch.
    These videos are so fun 😂😂. I got pulled to this channel from an LTX video this year and had been reluctant to subscribe. In my opinion you guys tend to have the most scientific approach for content and experiments and that's something I really value. Somehow you guys manage to have good quality long videos. I really love what you guys are doing.

    thanks! a more interesting (perhaps more comprable) test would have been NVlink 2080 vs. SLI 1080ti... I mean, the question really is "does the added bandwidth improve SLI performance? have we been bottlenecked all along??" where as all we are really seeing from this video is that "yes, SLI works on the 2080ti"

Yeah, the user created SLI profiles help, but the frustration of SLI issues is not worth it for me anymore. Buy the highest end GPU you can and enjoy. This is coming from an IT professional who loves everything hardware and software and loves to tinker with getting the best results possible.

    Steve, you promised to address the vram pooling function of nvlink? From a technology perspective nvlink is way more than just an sli interface. Too bad that you didn't get into it deeper. I am not sure to what extent the geforce line supports it, and I think this would have been a good point to clear up.

    So the reason you were getting blue screens on Tomb Raider is most likely due to TAA requiring frame data from previous frames. In a mGPU set up if you are alternating the frame rendering then the current frame won't have the data the previous frame was rendering. Hence the name - "Temporal" as in Time. It's generally not needed when pixel densities have gotten so high though. Also, UE4 engine does not support any kind of mGPU (though UE3 works perfectly fine). Disney needed it however for a 8-Quadro set up and rewrote code to make it work and donated that code to Epic earlier this year. I believe it's slated in a point update to UE4.

Having said that I wanted to know your thoughts on the Final Fantasy XV demo using DLSS and Tensor cores with the Turing launch. I understand that it is not apples to apples comparison with architecture differences, however wanted to know the thermals and power draw on the Turing chip when the Tensor cores are utilized. Is there a difference?

    Steve are you going to release any videos comparing 8700k and 2700x with the 2080ti? Would be interesting to see how much the performance difference increases (compared to using a 1080ti) at 1080p, 1440p and 4k (maybe 4k with SLI?).

    @Gamers Nexus,
    For the test during the Sniper Elite game, which mode were you running the sli in? Dual x8 or x16? I am having a hell of a time finding motherboards with dual x16 mode capabilities. I would go with dual RTX 2080s in x8 but my concern is being able to run games in that mode that come out in the future.

    Great video! How about a single RTX 2080 Ti at x8? Will this be slower than a single card at x16? I'd like to know because due to my motherboard/cooling solution, I can only access the x8 slot on my 3.0 chipset (which has been fine for my GTX 1080).

    I have a pretty interesting setup now. I got a 2080 Ti for games that don't support SLI and VR games. I kept my SLI 1080 Ti's as well. My board has a PLX chip, z270x Aurus Gaming 9. So I can run 2 way SLI at x16/x16 in slots 1 & 3 even with a 7700K. Slots 2 & 4 are x8 and share bandwidth with slots 1 & 3 respectively. So if 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 are populated they default to x8 speed. So I can run 3 way SLI at x16/x8/x8 or 4 way at x8/x8/x8/x8. So what I did was, I put the 2080 Ti in slot 1 so it would run at x16 and put the 1080 Ti's in slots 3 & 4 which are running at x8/x8. And it works! The 2080 Ti runs perfect in single GPU mode with the primary display connected to it and when I want to run SLI compatible games I switch the primary display by simply plugging the cable into the back of the 1080 Ti in slot 3 and enabling SLI. This way I don't have to invest another $1200 in another 2080 Ti. I have Hydrocopper 1080 Ti's, even selling them both it wouldn't come close to paying for a 2080 Ti and water block unless I sell them privately, which I don't have a buyer.
