    This is what's wrong with American Youth Sports in a nutshell. Parents have no clue about the rules, yet they act like they know everything. The referee did nothing wrong here.

      +CoolNala Exactly..so many parents seem to have the attitude that once their kid plays soccer (or any sport) somehow they become experts on refereeing, even though they knew nothing about it before.

    The refs were obviously fairly young. Maybe not even 18. A fully grown 50 year old man threatening a kid over a soccer game like this, is absolutely disgusting. The ref made the right calls and made the right decision in suspending the game until the management could disperse the fans.

      As a player for almost as long as you have reffed. I don't see a darn thing wrong with anything that ref did. And I was a bit of a hot head. I gotta say though. Refs can be inconsistent on the shoulder tackle. So you never know what was going on that led up to this.
      It irritates me to see a ref making the right call and getting yelled at for it. I played in an era when the sport boomed and there simply weren't enough refs to go around. If they think this is a bad ref... oh man they should have seen the typical ref in the 80's and early 90's. oh man it was rough.
      The typical parent doesn't know the sport so they probably don't know the difference between a legal shoulder tackle and one that isn't... like raising their elbow. I had a bad habit of lifting my arm after a shoulder but it was more running than pushing off. It took years for me to learn to keep that elbow pinned to my side.

    As a referee for 20 years at every level from youth to professional, the referee is absolutely right. While you can't do much about the fans at adult amateur/pro games, youth and high school is different. Referees have to deal with it or it only gets worse,. especially in high school, since sports are considered an extension of the classroom. Half the time the players yelled back at their own parents for embarrassing them, since the parents were clueless, and acting like jerks.

  • @daveinindy
    @daveinindy 7 лет назад +148

    I also reffed a bunch of years - plenty of college and HS games. This young ref made good calls. Some (not all) of the white teams parents seemed to be getting their kids riled up. I haven't seen an entire group of fans kicked out of a game before ... pretty extreme ... but probably worked in this case. What I noticed most - the school had an athletic director that handled this beautifully. No emotion - just resolved the situation calmly (and in a manner that reinforced good sportsmanship to the young players). Well done, AD.

    • @darklordojeda

      If he had handled it correctly it never would have gotten to the point it did. The coach or whoever he was should have been over there at the first sign the fans were getting out of control.

    It's lamentable that is was necessary but this was properly done. This is NOT a case of the referees being oversensitive and overstepping their authority, but is specifically part of our instruction.

      Well said. I'm a soccer referee and most leagues, state associations, etc. if not ALL of them would have a 0% Tolerance for verbal assault as this. I've had to end a very well played Under 10 soccer match years ago because a parent decided to be an idiot and tell me he'll be waiting for me in the parking lot. Sometimes, it's the parents that need the officiating, not the kids anymore...

      Woody a few weeks ago I was the AR for a U10 boys game. One parent was being the typical “coaching from the sideline” parent. Another parent decided he heard enough of it and yelled at the parent to stop. The parent who thought he was the coach then got up out of his seat and got in the other guys face. I thought the center was gonna stop the game right there. Funniest thing was that the parent who didn’t like the other coaching from his seat, did the exact same thing later

    • @Raider025
      @Raider025 7 лет назад +10

      I think that was the supervisor that is supposed to be present. In NFHS rules (high school games, which I believe this was), the supervisor is responsible for maintaining conduct and, in rare cases like this, informing people they must leave otherwise the game is declared "terminated" by the officials, and left to the state association for judgement on the result. The coach is responsible in most USSF based club matches.

    Hey Ref! I hope you will see my comment someday. I'm a football referee as well, I'm from Poland. I (or actually we) see the same people every week. Doesn't matter if they are from America, Europe or Asia. We are surrounded by great people who really love this game, but unfortunately among them you can spot black sheeps like the one in the red hat. I heard that "after the game ref" line probably around 10000 times now, but after the game... there was nobody. The thing is, they are always so brave when they are anonymous, but whenever you direct your attention towards them - they become invisible. I love to do this as an assistant referee on regional division. I just look behind me, spot such person and stare at him for a while. I love that moment when he gets scared of responsibility and looks down immediately.
    Ref, or actually my brother in arms. Just well done. Big thumb up to you and your team. I would love to officiate with you someday. Keep it up Mate :)

    real classy. I like how the guy making threats just goes and sits down like no one will know where he is if he does that. parents like these are what's wrong with youth sports. if you're going to yell at the officials, you damn sure better know what you're talking about. very obvious these people don't have the same knowledge of the game as the referee does. well done mr. ref. I bet this game was much more enjoyable for the players after those loudmouths were gone.

      Defender plays the man, not the ball. It is a charge. Page 10. I would call this excessive as the attacker is removed from his feet.
      www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf
      The question is whether it was careless or reckless. I don't think it qualifies as either. Just an excessive charge. Direct free kick white. Have you ever seen this NOT called in pro soccer or international soccer?

    I fault the head coach and the athletic administrator for the dismissal of the entire spectator section of the red team. In the National Federation of High School sports (NFHS) Coaches Code of Conduct - which is in the front of every sport's high school rule book - it is stated that "The coach shall exert his or her influence to enhance sportsmanship by the spectators…" The head coach did not do anything to curb the abysmal sportsmanship by the spectators or threats made by one man in particular. If the center referee could hear it, then both the head coach and the athletic administrator could hear it and it was their responsibility and duty to immediately end it. They did not so the center referee (head official) had to take matters into his hands. In NFHS Soccer Rule 5-3-2(e), "The head referee or center referee shall have the authority to suspend play or terminate the game whenever the elements, SPECTATORS, or other causes require." The referee had the authority and substantial reason to suspend the game and have the spectators dismissed.

    When will "adults" realize it's not about them and sometimes their views are foggy. One dad yelling "you're taking away from the kids" to the ref was absolutely wrong. The ref has decisions to make and if the players want to direct dissent towards the ref then they are hurting their team. That dad in the red hat is an embarrassment and should go live his own dreams and not do it through his kid. He's the one that ruined it for all of those fans, not anyone on the field. That tackle was well done by the defender and timed well. It's not a foul just because somebody falls down. He has every right to go for that ball, just as the forward does, and use his shoulder to make that challenge.

    That shoulder to shoulder wasn't a foul. The captain has a right to have that explained to him though and the ref carded him. The second yellow was quick too.

    Thanks to a few assholes, everyone had to suffer. I am a soccer dad and this makes me want to vomit. We are doomed as a society. I would predict that in my lifetime, we may not be able to conduct any kind of competition sports anymore because if people are this out of control and fanatical now, how bad will it be twenty years from now?

  • @Raider025

    The game at the high school level is meant for kids to have fun (with some possibilities of being scouted). Parents are meant to sit there and watch the game, cheering their team on, but staying positive in the process. They are NOT there to threaten the officials because the game isn't going their way. I don't care how bad you think the refs are doing. You are not entitled to threaten bodily harm upon an official.

    I'm not sure about the first call... maybe descent? But that second call was spot on, handling and based on the actions of the players it was not his first violation of the laws.

  • @jameshimes6325
    @jameshimes6325 9 лет назад

    Had a coach threaten to "take me out" at a U10 game once. There can be bad calls. Trying to watch all the action - sometimes through 5 to 10 bodies in the way can make it real tough to get every call perfect. That being said....no reason for any parent to threaten an official over a youth sports event. I've seen "tough" guys like this threaten 17 and 18 year old refs. Just uncalled for. And I agree 100% that this is why it is tough to get new refs and keep the ones we have.

    ref did nothing wrong. As part of the game is respecting the ref. The player got a warning for what he said, then preseated to continue and got sent off. One of the 1st rules you learn in soccer is respect the ref. There was no foul there and another case of parents taking it to far. Plain pathetic what they did.

  • @bigbluegpr

    This is the underlying problem with all youth sports, whether rec or high school. The parents take it all too damn seriously. That reffing crew looked like teenagers. I wonder how that ignorant douchebag that was doing all of the yelling would like it if someone threatened HIS kid like that? And people wonder why there's a shortage of refs for high school sports these days. Who wants to subject themselves to this kind of treatment, and possibly bodily harm to ref a game?

    • @Raider025
      @Raider025 7 лет назад

      I mean... I subject myself to this treatment. Most games are smooth and not anywhere near this bad, thankfully.

    • @rickkimball6125
      @rickkimball6125 6 лет назад

      I agree. We are having a very difficult time getting people into officiating youth sports because of this behavior. The ideal ref candidates are young men who played the game but I have had many officials quit after a season because it's not worth it. And now that my son is an umpire (youth baseball) and I've watched him get berated by a grown man (who was WRONG, by the way), I am questioning if I should've invited him to try officiating. It was all I could do not to run on the field and level the jackass yelling at my 16 yo son...and this was a 6 year old t ball game.

He ruined it for everyone...and he's teaching his kid that it's ok to threaten refs when you don't get your way. Good luck in the real world, jackass.

    I think it's a little harsh to give a 2nd yellow for arguing a call, but if he had been warned before I could see it. The yellow card on the hand ball is bull.

    • @Kartracer6
      @Kartracer6 8 лет назад

      +Jamie Dempsey The hand ball looked intentional. Also a yellow then a red could also have meant he already had a yellow

    • @Raider025
      @Raider025 7 лет назад

      Chances are he was warned before the dissent yellow was given. I agree with it regardless. As for the handball yellow, it probably wasn't the kid's first time doing something like that, hence the yellow.

    • @jamie-dempsey
      @jamie-dempsey 7 лет назад +1

      I know that he already had a yellow card... I said that a 2nd yellow card for arguing seemed a little harsh. I will say that from the one camera angle it's hard to determine if it was intentional or not

    • @Raider025
      @Raider025 7 лет назад

      Thing is not EVERY handball is a yellow. It's usually either for doing it often or where you did it (like in the PA versus outside it).

    • @Raider025

      To be fair here, the referee couldn't pinpoint the source so he had to clear the whole stand.

    • @neilmccauley9174
      @neilmccauley9174 7 лет назад

      That's not "fair", that is the ref being an idiot. He knew he was making a bad call, then made another bad call to purposefully incite the crowd. He didn't make an effort to locate the offending fan, and instead decided to remove the entire crowd. His motives are definitely questioned.

    • @Raider025
      @Raider025 7 лет назад +1

      Neil McCauley You must be kidding. No ref intentionally does this for fun.

    • @neilmccauley9174
      @neilmccauley9174 7 лет назад

      Right. They are only human. The ref never looks towards the crowd, makes a second bad call, again ignores the crowd. He acted like he was afraid to even look at them. Then, instead of kicking the offenders out of the stands, he runs and tells them they all have to leave. If we are throwing the baby out with the bathwater, he should have made all fans leave. There is no excuse to purposefully target one team in an attempt to give the other such an obvious advantage.

    • @Raider025
      @Raider025 7 лет назад

      There were clearly fouls that so happened to be against the team that has these parents. I would run out the entire stands too. Being threatened is above and beyond what is "par for the course" here. Point is, you have a clear bias towards one side and it's showing. A neutral person like me clearly agrees with the referee in this case.

    These Refs need to be send for 3 Months to Europe. When coming back they dont act like cry babys and can take all without having a effect on them. Laughable that they are so sensible over there in the States if i compare it what Refs have to take in Europe and doesnt effect them at all.
