- Our understanding of the vital importance of the gut biome has skyrocketed in the past 10 years, yet we are still just beginning to learn all of the incredible functions of these healthy bacteria.
Today I'll be reviewing the role of healthy gut bacteria in the prevention of multiple disease processes, including the most common diseases that affect American women- obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
I will particularly be talking about a really interesting key bacteria called Akkermansia, and a growing body of research suggesting its importance in weight maintenance and insulin sensitivity, amongst other things.
Since learning about this, I have started taking the Pendulum brand Akkermansia product myself (I'll explain why I prefer this brand in the video though I have no affiliation with the company), and recommend it to many of our patients. I think after listening to this, you will consider it too!

I was 11 in 1971 when I was diagnosed with psoriasis. We knew nothing about autoimmune. I always had digestive problems and I sensed they my later autoimmune problems were gut related. I’ve dealt with gut issues my whole life. Thank you for this interesting and informative discussion.
You have the gift of teaching. Thanks for explaining.
Not all probiotics and fermented foods are equally good for all women. Especially for perimenopausal women because of estrogen and histamine connection. It affects our gut, skin, nervous system, heart etc.
Lost me at "eating fiber". My lifelong gut problems immediately improved upon getting rid of fiber 100%
Dr Susan, thank you for this video. Could you post that link you spoke of for the testing? (Thank you!) I have just recently stumbled on Akkermancia (and you due to the subject- subscribed w/ notifications!) and at 64 I’m finding that more things are showing up that need addressing and they seem to all point to metabolic health. I’m just beginning to address the real likelihood that I have a compromised gut biome at the heart if it all-growing conditions stemming from inflammation. Akkermancia looks like a good place to start in addition to intermittent fasting (using Dr Fung’s book as a guide) which I’m (and husband with issues too) in week three for 34 or more hours every other day and mostly keto on the eating days to begin to repair my gut biome . I think adding prebiotics (I’m taking ground psyllium husks daily for “regularity” that’s also become an issue) pro and maybe post biotics too, digestive enzymes (?). I’m taking bone broth by Paleovalley and electrolytes daily and a host of vitamins as well.
Such an informative video. I started this supplement recently and will now add it to my husband's daily supplements. While I did my own research before purchasing, your clear-cut explanations are better than what I found online. Thank you!
Do you experience gut issues and is that why you purchased this product
Very interesting! I had never heard of this probiotic before. I am going to talk to my holistic nutritionist about this. Thank you!
My Akkermansia levels were not even detectable on a GI Map, although I’m not overweight at all. I’ve been taking Pendulum Akkermansia for several months now and if nothing else, it has helped with my constipation. Hopefully a followup test will show an increase of those in my gut.
I had the same results and have been on that for 2 weeks now and feel no difference. I’m also taking Mega Pre, I have horrible constipation and was hoping to see a difference by now, but maybe I need more time to notice.
@@kylieky7 It took longer than 2 weeks to see a difference for me….maybe about a month. Good luck!
Try taking daily cranberry extract or if there is such a thing of pomegranate extract basically those are actor mancilla Foods and keep akkermansia happier more likely to produce more of the species, Ackerman she's getting to be known as a keystone species of the microbiome of the gut
Thank you for always sharing your know to us and explaining it the way you do.
Thank you for talking about the gut microbiome! Please keep this information coming. When I eat I always think about what would my gut buddies like to eat. I’m way more motivated to eat well for them.
Wonderful information. Love how you explained this! Thank you.
There are photos of both of these products in the video!
I’m so glad they are finally doing micro biome & gut health research! It’s so important to our overall health & wellbeing.
Thank you, love it !!
So very interesting. Would you mind sharing the specific Probiotic you are referring to from Thorne? I have spent so much time and money trying to figure out the best “ bang for your buck” with probiotics. Very exciting news about Akkermansia. What is the test you referred to in this segment to do at home for gut health ? Science is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
At 13:06 she shows it.
@@lindabommarito4623 did she mention where to get or what the home test is to check the bacteria? Maybe I missed it - didn’t know that home tests were even available.
@@lindabommarito4623 never mind I was only listening before and now see it’s from Thorne. :-)
Thank you, that was really interesting.
You look lovely in that outfit. Ty doc for the info.
Please include the link where to buy it
If you do a google search for Pendulum akkermansia, you’ll see the link
It's in there - pendulumlife.com/
Thanks @@drsusan
@@drsusanwhat would you recommend? The Akkermansia OR the GLP-1 ? It looks like the GLP-1 has akkermansia in it along with two other ingredients. Would that be better to take then just the akkermansia? It is pretty costly to order both.
Thank you for amazing information.
I thought the study used pasteurized Akerrmansia?
What is your opinion on parasite cleanses?
I’ve been on the site refreshing which product to use for 3 months now. But I read having diverticulitis (having an episode)I read don’t take it, any thoughts??
Waiting until all better to start this product. Can anyone share did it help with constipation bloat?
Dr. Susan, do you take the Thorne product AND the Pendulum Metabolic Daily or a similar Pendulum product?
I take a multi strain, probiotic and plain Akkermansia personally
Pendulum does make multi strain antibiotics, that include Akkermansia - another great choice !
@@drsusanthanks so much for the information and your info on HRT❤️
What foods contain Akkermansia muciniphila?
How Can I Boost Akkermansia Levels in My Gut?
Unfortunately, there are no foods that contain Akkermansia, so you can't eat Akkermansia. However, to encourage the growth of Akkermansia, you can eat foods rich in polyphenols, including apples, beans, berries, grapes, flaxseed, green tea, nuts, olives, asparagus, onions, oats, etc.
❤where isit a ailable?

Thank you Susan for sharing this information. I found it on Amazon.
Make sure it's pendulum - the other products don't have live bacteria!
@@drsusanI discovered the pasturized version the manufacturer claims its the superior form not pendulum. I googled it and google also agreed so now Im confused. What's actually better or do we actually know? I have psoriasis only reason I considered it.
Pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila (PAm) has been shown to be more effective than live Akkermansia muciniphila (Am) in several studies:
PAm is a bacterium that's normally found in gut microbiota, but it's less common in people who are obese. It's pasteurized using mild heat treatment to less than 100ºC, and is used in the form of cell-wall components and membrane proteins.
