When I first heard of the group Cypress Hill, I honestly thought they were from Brooklyn. Brooklyn has a neighborhood called Cypress Hill and they also sampled Big Daddy Kane's voice from a song which mentions the neighborhood. They were definitely different. At that time, The West Coast had things on lock with Gangsta Rap. When I heard them rhyme in Spanish I was super amped up. I felt they embraced their culture and hood. Being Puertorican, I liked the fact that they mixed Latin rhythms with rap. They are Legends and future R&RHOFers. Respect. Big Up from Brooklyn.

They were obviously enfluenced by Black music ( Funk) and Hip Hop culture so my connection with them was instantaneous! During the early 90s, most groups in hip hop wanted that east coast flava. It wasn't until ICE T, KING TEE, and NWA/ EAZY E came into the mix in the late 80s that influenced groups like CYPRESS HILL.

@Steezart Yo homie, I'm from the streets of Flatbush, Brooklyn and I was present during the embryonic period of hip hop during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Took my black NYC friend to East LA recently, and was telling him you won't find black people out there. Not because they're not welcomed, but thats just how the lines were drawn, so to say. He was trippin' out on that.
No that’s not just how the lines were drawn. Don’t you know anything about Los Angeles history. Most Black people first moved out here from the south for two reasons and most of them settled in South Los Angeles. They came out here because of the aerospace industry. Jobs. They created their communities because it was close to the factories that built airplanes. The second reason they moved out here was to worship Jesus. It was about churches churches and more churches. There’s a reason Southern California is called the City of Angels. It had nothing to do with segregation. It had everything to do with closeness to where people lived and their communities were they worshiped and where they worked. It’s not because people are racist and they hate each other.
Are you from Los Angeles yourself? Don’t you know that the reason California has such a strong economy was because of all the industry that was out here? And now it’s all gone because of what the Democrats have done.

I was hanging in East LA. I had no idea about any gangs there or anything. I never felt like I was in danger once. I'm Australian, people were more fascinated by my accent than anything
East LA was most violent in the 90s. Especially early 90s, in those days drive bys were so common that schools all over LA had to have drive by drills where students would practice getting under the desk in case there was a drive by, this was due to a large number of different gangs going to the same schools. The Mexican Mafia put out an edict that ordered the street gangs to stop drive bys, (temporarily) it was then shifted know who you are shooting at because at the time, a lot of innocent people were getting shot in the crossfire. The danger began to die down in the mid 2000s, especially after the gang injunctions put in place. Gang injunction mean the police can stop a person or a group of people if they look gang related or suspicious which is why the gangs are more secretive now or sometimes they won't hang out in certain areas for extended periods of time.
Sure but South Gate can't really rep South LA or South Central, we're smack dab between East LA and South LA. Lynwood can barely rep South LA and that's mostly the Long Beach Blvd area near Compton, but South Gate, HP, Bell, and the other nearby cities can't rep South LA And since the area is mostly Latino, it gets a "pass" into being East LA.
I used to LOVE Frios, Kools, Wet daddies, lovlies, whatever you want to call it. So, so, fun. LOL We saw Cypress, Funkdoobiest and House of Pain in San Diego in the 90's on Lovelies and it was the greatest experience. Ahhhhh to be young IN THAT TIME again.
It's crazy hearing this bc I remember on the beef II dvd in 2004 when they documented Cypress Hill's falling out w Ice Cube how the Mexican Gangs were ready & willing to ride on Cube & West Side Connection if it went to the streets (even tho WC didn't get involved).
That’s what I don’t understand about brothas out west. They’ll have the most fatalistic venom against each other while the Mexicans will unite to go against them.
That happened because Cyrus Hill helped Pycho Realm a cholo rap group out. I'm sure their gang automatically offered their support. Just like how the " brown side " gang had Easy E's back for signing them into his label in the 90's
That shit on that DVD was stupid nobody cared about them beefing Cali was about gang banging not rappers. And Southern Cali Mexicans was only unified in jail not on the streets. That shit was stupid nobody was beefing over any of these niggas unless it was their crews

According to L.A. gangs South Gate, Lynwood, Bell Gardens, Maywood, Compton, Watts, etc are South Side Los Angeles. South East is Whittier, Norwalk, Artesia, Pico Rivera Hawaiin Gardens, etc. But yes technically South Gate, Lynwood, Bell Gardens are South East Los Angeles.
South East Los is considered all the gateway cities leading to the beach line. Hence, gate way city. That considered South East Los according to LA county.
Yup yup. But foos their age would still call that area south east. It’s weird. But in varrio politics they claim ss, and Downey, pico, Norwalk, sfs, etc claim se.
Cypress is being kind. Los Angeles and NY are two separate cities. On the east coast Latinos and blacks embrace each other. Its, to some degree not like that in Los Angeles.
The majority of African Americans and Latin Americans in Los Angeles also embrace each other. You're just looking at it from a small perspective. Especially those that aren't racist or gang related. It's from the gang perspective, their associates and their affiliates that keeps everything separate.

Lynwood can barely rep South LA and that's mostly the Long Beach Blvd area near Compton, but South Gate, HP, Bell, and the other nearby cities can't rep South LA
And since the area is mostly Latino, it gets a "pass" into being East LA.
Bust out the mint leaves
It's crazy hearing this bc I remember on the beef II dvd in 2004 when they documented Cypress Hill's falling out w Ice Cube how the Mexican Gangs were ready & willing to ride on Cube & West Side Connection if it went to the streets (even tho WC didn't get involved).
That’s what I don’t understand about brothas out west. They’ll have the most fatalistic venom against each other while the Mexicans will unite to go against them.
That happened because Cyrus Hill helped Pycho Realm a cholo rap group out. I'm sure their gang automatically offered their support. Just like how the " brown side " gang had Easy E's back for signing them into his label in the 90's
nortenos and surenos are far from united.
@@nl5h yeah that's a différent conversation.
That shit on that DVD was stupid nobody cared about them beefing Cali was about gang banging not rappers. And Southern Cali Mexicans was only unified in jail not on the streets. That shit was stupid nobody was beefing over any of these niggas unless it was their crews

Lynnwood Assasins represent 🙌 cypress hill foe life
I'm English age 59. I live in West Sussex, but get this. I was born in Lynwood, lived on East Gage Avenue. Worked at Gage Bowl and the Elks Lodge. We had friends of my Aunt & Uncle I lived with over in Bell Gardens. Friends from Gage Bowl Rich Machado, Farren Dieter and others. Rich used to carry a red leg Tarantuala around with him. Good Times !!!
Ha haaaa. Drove past Gage Bowl today. Elks Lodge!?!? Old school!
That's crazy... I lived in Lynwood in the late mid 70's early 80'. I use to go to Gage Bowl in the early 70's. I lived in every city in the SouthEast area.
I’m from Scotland and now live in Australia but spent time in Venice 1988 at 14 years old working in east la strengthening earthquake damage saw a police helicopter for the first time chasing a car past our job site it was like being in a movie for me but know body else give a shit that was even more crazy
I thought Cypress Hill was from Southgate? Southgate is not East Los Angeles.
they are... i don't know why they refer to it as "lower east side". I think they were just trying to pinpoint it geographically.
I’m from Canada, my dad would send me to L.A. when school was out for the summer. I’d spend summer with cousins, It was so crazy. Good memories. Glad I made it out. I know a lot didn’t 🪦
You got 10-15 gangs in a 2 mile radius in Boyle Heights
Yup
Not possible maybe 10 mile radius
Unless the gangs are really really small or are sleeping on top of each other
People forget how dope, and how influential King Tee was. He actually had a heavy influence on Biggie’s style.
Keep it up! I am dropping 1 song a week for the next 3 years straight. It has never been done in music. Come along for the ride if you want. Stay blessed ! - Bryan
the ending where he brought up "unique LA sound" when in reality they sounded like they bit the originators for their sound... a mexican group called "PSYCHO REALM" 2 brothers, one high pitched voice and the other was a deep raspy voice...if you pay attention they tensed up and vibe got weird when he started to explain that detail of "no one else had that sound but them" that should tell yall who really came up with the sound
3:40 it's the system, is a way to break us apart and hate each others.
It's fucked up that Cali is like that
Everywhere is like that because of Latin immigration. I can feel it in New York.
It's like that everywhere ...the "minority" coalition is a joke because everyone is selfish in a highly capitalist society
It's not like that everywhere bro. Philly isn't so much racially divided. Not in the Hoods anyway.
I’m glad it’s like that. Nothing like SoCal L.A

Cypress Hill tapes was all I can afford as a kid growing up
According to L.A. gangs South Gate, Lynwood, Bell Gardens, Maywood, Compton, Watts, etc are South Side Los Angeles. South East is Whittier, Norwalk, Artesia, Pico Rivera Hawaiin Gardens, etc. But yes technically South Gate, Lynwood, Bell Gardens are South East Los Angeles.
Anything south of the downtown building is south LA for me.
@@x213ERx Truth.
“According to L.A. gangs”☝️🤓
It was more driven by Mexicans from Mexico, rather than Mexicans from the USA, the other aspect of it was driven by Street/Gang Politics.
How it should be, stick to you’re own!
@@johnnytightlips7878 you….are……exactly….a big part of the problem 🤮
The majority of African Americans and Latin Americans in Los Angeles also embrace each other. You're just looking at it from a small perspective. Especially those that aren't racist or gang related. Cypress were a whole new deal when they came out. Nothing like them at the time
Yea they were wannabe Mid City Stoners not gangsters
They didn't speak on the white supremacy racism in Latino culture against blacks in Los Angeles
They don't want no problems
Exactly 💯🙏🏾
B-Real touched on it a little bit, Sen show up at a party getting mad dawgged until he spoke...that's racist.
That’s only in jail not on the streets you don’t see no skin heads running around in those hoods like that
@@Raiderfred you don't get it. They are talking about the Latinos being the "white Supremacist".
He ain't from East LA, he's from South Gate
South Gate and Downey got a good amount of cubanos. Atleast since I was a kid.
What hood is sen dog from?
I didn't realize Southeast LA County had a Cuban enclave. South Gate. I makes sense. I guess Southeast LA is where they put it down. Sen Dog being Afro-cuban, was able to fall in with the Mexicans. And B-Real being Cuban and an actually half-mexican, but being down with the bloods is interesting as well. Crazy how every nationality kinda fell in where they did, within the LA Gang Culture.
As a Mexican from Ny, is it safe for me to visit LA?
Yes lol . It depends what neighborhoods or side of LA. You go to South LA or Compton don't rep a certain color. Not all of LA is like that. Just stick to mostly tourist areas. I'd mostly watch out for the unpredictable homeless now. They are just totally random and you don't know what they'll do of you pass by them. Too many random stabbings from those guys.
I grew up in East la California
South East LA Bell Gardens, Lynnwood is not East Los 🤣🤣🤣
Someone sounds like they’re not from California 🤣
They're ignorantly generalizing it just because there's a lot of our people there. They Might as well call california east la and sound even more stupid 🤣

I always thought Cypress Hill was one Mexican and one Black American …
One El Salvadorian, one black Cuban, and one white boy.
In the system of white supremacy both of them are considered as black

Why did he not correct nore when he said breal was from east los? He's from south gate which is the south side and next to watts but not south central.
They allow gang culture from the top on purpose. I was born in a communist country where only a few were in control at the top and greed wasnt like it is today there was no chance drugs could get into the community. That is just a small example.
I remember when I drove out to East LA to register for a class at ELAC back in ‘09. My counselor from my home school told me not to even use the gasoline stations because there wasn’t too many brothas or sistas in East LA and she was worried that something might pop off. I went out there and I didn’t see one single brotha or one sista anywhere, not on the sidewalks, bus stops, or anywhere on the ELAC campus. Fk that. I bounced and never came back.
They are talking about GANGS, not people in East LA in general. You're not going to get hit up in ELAC lol smh
@@la-do-ra-ch6810 Only you out-of-town clowns and squares think, “well I’m not a gang banger, I can go anywhere in LA, and wear whatever color because I don’t do GANGS.” Lol You’ll be the first non-gang civilian banged on and the first non “GANGS” clown robbed and laid out. You must have been born yesterday or you’ve never been to jail or you must have watched this video, but you’re deaf. For you slow short-yellow-bus riders, Cypress Hill confirmed what Nore noticed….LOS ANGELES is separated by RACE just Iike in jail and prison. So in other words square short-yellow-bus rider or deaf boy, in LA….YOUR RACE is A GANG. You might be one these black and “brown” clowns that buries your head underground to pretend that “in-general” it’s Black Americans vs Latinos, especially black men vs Mexican men and that’s “in-general”, in the streets, in the job market, in anywhere in LA. Brothas and sistas who take advice from a non-black American like you and/or somebody who is from out-of-town will end up regretting underestimating how real it is in LA, especially right now. You must not watch the news or understand English either. Lol SMH Plus why would I feel comfortable being the only brotha on a college campus? Have you ever heard of the movie, “Get Out”?
