Everyone is always surprised that rappers listen to music besides rap. Which should be obvious; if one listens to rap themselves. Rappers don’t sample, and thus don’t draw influence from, other rappers. That’d be biting. You want to be original. Pull ideas from sources your peers either don’t know, or haven’t used yet.
Funny.. I grew up with hiphop and metal. I had a lot of metalhead friends over the years. When you ask them if they loke hiphop, the say no, but they love cypress hill.
I remember seeing Fab Five Freddie interviewing Cypress Hill around the time they released Black Sunday. FFF asked Cypress what they were currently listening to and started naming off a bunch of hip hop acts. B-Real and Sen Dog said that they had been listening to a lot of Black Sabbath. That made sense because they sampled "Warning" and "The Wizard" in their song "Ain't Goin' Out Like That". Sen Dog went to high school with Dave Lombardo and said the first live band he ever saw was Slayer playing at lunchtime at their school.
Dave Lombardo dated Sen Dodog's sister and always took time to talk with him about music even though Cypress Hill wasn't big yet and Slayer was part of the Big 4. Sen Dog always respected him for it. They would even occasionally crash each other's interviews and record signings, etc. just to say hey to each other.

Ahhhhhh that's where the Rock superstar came from ! amazing diverse lads right here !
Great musicians appreciate different genres, that's how great music is made..combining ideas!
Cinco De Mayo by War is a fuckin banger indeed.
Rakim's rhyme was fire!!
"Mickey Mouse, Built the house
Built it by the border...
A earthquake came, rocked his crib
And now it's in the water"
He wrote that when he was seven
That's why he's such a brillant rapper/M.C.
"Not bad as in bad, but bad as in good. HUH!"
-Sen Dog
actually Run DMC and that's why he said it. I cracked up at that bit though lol
BADASZ😝
2:55 the Root Down EP is so fucking good, great choice. a couple remixes, a couple live tracks.
The Root Down EP was my proper introduction to the Beastie Boys when I was 13. So many great memories. Went missing years ago and have never replaced. Need to get back on that. Love that era of the group. Combine that with 'The in sound from way out', and it makes for one hell of a great double feature.
Bobo and Sen know their music. Legends from one of the greatest groups of all time period
Been a loyal Cypress Hill Fan Since 89 Met B-Real at his Dr.Greenthumb Shop in LA Cypress Hill 4 life whole Group is Badass Thank you Cypress Hill Keep Up The Legendary 🎵
this is an amazing episode. Thank you!
Soul Assassins! To me you guys were the only ones in Hip Hop who could deliver the full weight of mythological and philosophical themes in word and music, merged with topics of the modern times at that time, the full package; reality meets mindscape. You guys always paint the full picture.
These guys have such excellent taste! Great diverse selection of music.
These guys picked the same things I would! Love cypress hill ! Seen em live with the Beastie Boys years ago.
These guys love music. this is why they stick around.
They got some fine taste.
Class act.
Great gents. Great segment. Great questions. Going to get some back in black.
Great taste. All fantastic choices!
There’s a reason I’ve always loved you Cypress. And you just reminded me of it.
I never knew anyone else was part of Cypress hill besides Sen Dog and B Real
This was a great one!!! Respect.
Great to hear about the Metallica's and Led Zeppelin's! Thanks. I'm less familiar with Doom..... but it gives me something to go check out now. 👍

Pink Floyd, Run DMC, the Beastie, War, Eric B & Rakim…’nuff said. These chaps sure know their music. How cool would it be to hang out with Cypress Hill?
