  • The most important piece by Simeon Ten Holt, Canot Ostinato. This is the new project by the VICTOR KRAUS GROUP. With a special authorization by the publisher Donemus Amsterdam the percussionist Victor Kraus creates a version with winds and strings. This gives the piece a total new appearance; less percussive but more expressive, a version providing an extraordinary hearing experience.
For this project Victor Kraus brings together 6 of the most well known Luxembourgish musicians: Kae Shiraki (piano), Aniela Stoffels (transverse flute), Sébastien Duguet (clarinet), Stéphane Giampellegrini (cello), Pascal Schumacher (vibraphone) and Victor Kraus (marimba). A group of musicians specially formed for this magnificent piece, normally played by keys (pianos, percussions, etc.) but never integrating winds or strings.
A minimal music master piece with a duration of 1 to 24 hours; 106 musical blocks repeated ad libitum. A piece that will sound differently at every performance, because every musician is free to choose instantly which voice or/and which note of the notated rhythm he will play. A piece that makes straining one’s years, that makes one dream, meditate or slumber, a fascinating piece that makes one feel good.
The ingredients: one rhythm in quintuplets creates a basic pulsation, 106 blocks repeated ad libitum distinguish themselves clearly in harmony and sound. The transitions trough bridges are not repeated and appear in an abrupt way, new material appears instantly without the imperceptible fade-ins, so typical characteristic for the early minimal music pieces. A melody that uncouples itself from the texture and metamorphose suddenly into theme and accompaniment, strong musical effects, an undulating and hypnotic music; strong emotions is the result for the listener.
Being played a thousands of times, the most popular and most played contemporary Dutch piece is an exemplary acoustic experience, easy to listen (tonal) but holding the suspense of a rich and outrageous music.
The VICTOR KRAUS GROUP presents us an unheard version of this piece for multiple keys, using winds and strings. It’s till today an unprecedented version because of it’s really challenging technical play for the winds and difficulty in chamber musical interpretation.
Record on 12.12.2018 @ the Conservatory - City of Luxembourg

    Flute - Aniela Stoffels

Outstanding, magical. I've been listening to "Canto" in various interpretations for many years, and this is truly phenomenal. Brought tears to my eyes.

My compliments for this piece of art.
I love every note about it but these are my favorite parts:
    16:55 that volume change
    32:30 that lonely piano play
    40:00 those little mistakes
    44:24 that change in melody
58:58 the built-up with the low piano tone
    1:24:25 that end part
    Pure brilliance

I love this work in all forms, but I tend to prefer the ones that are not limited to keyboard instruments and welcome other Timbres. This arrangement is a Gold Medal example of how to approach a work with both reverence and an open and creative mind. Thank you for sharing this-- I know it will be the soundtrack of my life for years to come!!! There are times you've surprised me and other times you have brought me to tears. (In both cases, this is a VERY GOOD THING.) The only regret i have is that you don't have a Cimbalom in the mix, but that is because I play a similar instrument (Hammered Dulcimer)- it would add something very cool.- as it also combines the percussion and keyboard sound with an almost liquid tone. (Even cooler if you could get Ekaterina Yukhnova as a performer- she is an amazing player, and has many videos on RUclips She is light years ahead of me.). I wish you luck towards a 2023 album of this, and hope to have a chance to purchase it.
Listening a second time-- I just wanted to congratulate you on all the shifts in density and dynamics. I've listened to many versions, but this is by far the bestI I've heard and offering the most variety in textures and dynamics.

Will you record other Simeon Ten Holt's works in the future?

Thanks a lot for your feedback! It’s a pleasure knowing people enjoy our version of Canto Ostinato. To answer your question: first we will make an album with nearby this version but adding an electro musician… ;-) this will happen in 2023. Generally speaking there is a high possibility to play and record other works of Simeon TH. I’m thinking about…

This is an amazing performance. I have listened to this work in many versions, but this is a new experience. It seems to me that it would be nice to add timpani here, at the moments of climax on the fortissimo, as, for example, at the 10th minute.

@@victorkraus8900 The only disadvantage is that Canto might be the most popular but for me one of the less interesting compositions by Simeon Ten Holt. I prefer Lemniscaat, Horizon or Incantatie IV. What would such an arrangement sounds for a piece like Lemniscaat but I understand it has to be a bit main stream.
Canto in this very interesting arrangement is really swinging.

    • @victorkraus8900
      @victorkraus8900  3 года назад +1

@@HarpsichordVinylGallery Sorry for the super late answer! 😑 But yes, the others are super interesting. I think it could be an idea to perform them with the VKGroup in a similar arrangement. The "most popular" is always on one side an advantage but can be on the other side a disadvantage. For me it was a challenge to take such a popular piece and make it "swing" (as you write) in an new way.

Failed for me... imo, it would have been far more challenging and interesting to make a registration that did not depend upon pitched percussion in any way.

You mean a record without pitched instruments? Just chords, winds, etc...? Sounds also interesting!
