One question that does remain is a tiny bit embarrassing though. English is not my mother tongue, and I've learn most of it through RUclips. This +1!, i always have my earphones on, but when I am getting a coffee, making payment at the cashier. I usually take off my earphones or at least one side. Just feel that it's a bit rude having it, but frens thought this is weird :/
The Moe ; yes! And I would also add to remove or at least flip up your sunglasses, even for just a few seconds, when meeting someone. Let them see your eyes! Very important when confronted, or just talking to police for any reason.
Hi Antonio, I would like to add a few: 1. Do not listen to respond, listen to understand. 2. Listen more then you talk (accept for when your opinion is asked for of course) 3. Ask, ask, ask. People, at least from my view, now a days do things without asking. For example giving your opinion when its not asked for. Not to say you always have to be asked first. But it can come over very pushy in some ways. Ask if you can give somebody a tip instead of just throwing it out there. I think its just more polite that way. 4. Keep eye contact, very important to me. 5. Always be honest, also when its not pretty to be honest. It shows character. Honesty is the most important thing to me. 6. Sometimes nod and say something in the line of : "oh, I see! So you're actually saying ...." and repeat and perhaps even rephrase. It makes you a better listener.
My Dad always said good manners are free. You are absolutely correct that manners are all about respecting others. We definitely need more of that today.

Hello, Antonio. I am a woman and practice every single thing you've mentioned in this video, most men around me don't. Sadly, people have lost respect for one another in today's society. While out at the market today, in my way outside a store (while holding lots of grocery bags) I held the door open for the woman coming out behind me... not only did she not say thank you, but didn't even have the curtesy to acknowledge the fact that I held the door for her. Nevertheless, I'd do it all over again because I want to believe that all humanity isn't yet lost.

I heard once that; "the Definition of a Gentleman, is someone who makes the people around him feel comfortable" - and when I say "class" I'm not referring to pretentious snobbery; I mean the "Golden Rule" or treat others the way you want them to treat you, that's what chivalry is all about ....

Names and intros go hand in hand!! If you refer to people by their name, then you're more likely to remember it and this goes together VERY well with making introductions. Especially if it's a girl, or someone you want to like you, and you see them standing alone and you're in a circle of people. Be the kind of person who walks over and says: "Hi, you should join us; I'll introduce you to everyone." This demonstrates 2 things: 1) Strength. That you have influence over a group of people. They are willing to let someone new into their circle because you say so. 2) Not selfish. That person is going to feel safe with you, and feel like they have a stronger connection with you then all the other people in that room because you saved them from a potentially akward situation. Noone likes being in a room where they don't know anyone; it's boring, it's akward, and you feel out of place. If you can rescue someone from that, you'll appear to be strong, but also generous in their eyes. Coming across as strong AND generous is hard to pull off, and this is the perfect situation to show that person you can be both.
You make a great point, regarding cellphones, and punctuality. It is especially critical to stay off you're cellphone, and be on time, when in the dating world. When you're going on a date, show up on time; perhaps even a little bit early, and when you're actually on your date, stay off your cellphone, and give your date your full attention.

Love this video. Introductions are something I've always struggled with. You should do a video on restaurant/dinner party etiquette. Stuff like bringing a bottle of wine when someone invites you for dinner, complimenting the cooking from the host, putting the cloth in your lap when you sit down at a restaurant. I've noticed this is lost on so many people.
I would probably use "A lack of vocabulary" over "A lack of education". I met many bright minds throughout University that swore a lot during our conversations. I also agree so much with your bonus point. I travelled a lot during my youth and the locals were always super nice and kind to me. People going out of their way to help me, while a lot of my friends were met with cold shoulders or shunned away. I always smiled at everyone I interacted with, engaged in conversations despite language barriers and I tried to be genuinely nice. Because of that people were so nice to me. My friends however used to look down upon others. Didn't show them respect and were extremely rude. So their experiences were very different from mine. This even happened in our home country. Being nice to the waiters and other workers makes them treat you a lot better.
I just had a conversation today with someone who said people who curse sound unsophisticated. I don't know if it's my Italian family or being from Brooklyn or working a lot of blue collar jobs in my life but I always felt that cursing was another way to express yourself. I don't like negativity or hate talk but cursing is just words to me. I guess i need to clean up my fucking mouth. lol.
In my experience, unless your curse words are AIMED at a person for no reason, especially at who you're talking with, that's a problem. If you go out of your way to curse and it just sounds unnatural, that's a problem. Most other cursing is usually not, especially with people who have some life experience. Most of these people who say cursing makes you a bad person or something along those lines usually have A LOT of rules like these. "You stand a certain way? You're bad" "You answer my questions? That's talking back" "You look into my eyes? That's disrespectful lower your gaze". Best to ignore these people. And the last one is from my own personal experience lol
Andrew Attard It depends on who you are speaking to. I will swear when talking with work colleagues casually out in the field, but never in the office. I will swear when having a few beers with the boys, but not if we are walking down the street. I will swear while talking to my brothers, but not when speaking to anyone else in my family. I will never swear while speaking to strangers or aquaintances. I cant stand people who swaer no stop no matter where they are
I avoid frequent swearers. They make me feel uncomfortable. I basically have the same feelings about the person as if they were farting or saying something racist. If they were a customer I would talk to them less. If they were a supplier I would keep my interations brief and quietly look for another supplier. I once entered a room at work where a conversation was going on. The swearing was especially bad, but the subject of the conversation was casual, like fishing, sports, or whatever. Not religion or politics. No one was angry. I started tallying the swear words per minute. 21 swear words per minute. I left the room and came back an hour later to do what I needed to do. Sometimes a waiter or restaurant manager will come over to our group of coworkers to schmooze when we are at lunch and pepper the the conversation with word farts (curse words) and it has the opposite of its intended effect and it gets very awkward and we just want them to leave. If a salesman that is prone to swearing offers to take my wife and I out to dinner, I will always decline. I don't want my wife mad at me for putting her through that. It's very unprofessional. Just be aware that for some people it is as off putting as being handed a dog turd.

I'm offended when people are abused, corporate greed, selfishness, human rights violations, violence etc. I like that we live in a country where people are allowed to express themselves and I think swearing is a part of your identity if you want it to be. I think it's so minor compared to the real problems in the world. I don't get what you're saying at all.
I'm just now watching this, I love it. I'm so glad you especially put emphasis on the cursing. I can't stand watching RUclips videos with cursing or hearing anyone curse constantly. It's a huge turnoff. Keep up the awesome job, much respect.

Very good list, Antonio! I find number 2 to be extremely important, and have schooled my computer- dependent nephew on not being a " paper tiger". I have impressed former bosses by my refusal to talk behind a coworkers back by telling my boss, " Uh, sorry boss, but I haven't had the opportunity to tell him what I think of him to his face, and since he is not here to defend himself, I'd rather not say." This amazes them and they would tell me that the other guy was just in their office and didn't give me the same courtesy! " Doesnt matter, I have my own morals.", I'd say. Blows their minds!
I really find introducing people really hard; from missing the right moment and words to start the introductions to being kinda ignored from one side of the actors. Nice video
I'm surprised you didn't add eye contact to this list. especially for interviews, dates, ect. I've noticed often that people have the tendency to look everywhere else during a conversation and not look me in my eyes. people don't it intentionally it's just a horrible habit that needs to be broken.
Lol. Your replies made me laugh. Keep in mind whatever is in style now is going to be precieved as stupid in about a decade (Just look up '90s, '80s, or '70s fashion. What freaks!!) but trendy is not the same as stylish. If you take time to acknowledge the science of dressing (yes there is a science to it) and clad yourself in a way that expresses confidence AND self-respect you will always look good.
The point you make about the difference between etiquette and manners is very important. Always kind of thinking about the two as kind of the same; there is a huge gap. As an adult, there is no excuse for bad manners.
I'd say so. In many Hispanic cultures it is quite normal to speak loudly while in Europe that is seen as offputting. It really depends. I find I speak loudly with friends but when I'm at work my tone is lowered considerably when I talk to customers as I dont want to come off as disrespectful or pushy

Great video! I totally agree with you on multiple points, especially the impact that cell phones have on common courtesy. It's funny, I read an article recently about how not putting exclamation points at the end of sentences is becoming poor etiquette which is absurd. A couple simple modern manner mistakes are avoiding eye contact, fidgeting and not specifically responding to what people are talking about. I only have two issues with the video... 1.You should've ironed that sweatshirt before making the video :-) 2. The wife's ring was on the wrong finger.
How behaviours change when people are on vacation is fascinating - I spend more time on vacation than most because it is my passion and what my RUclips Channel is about and regardless of which part of the world we visit, the same behaviours can be observed and they seem to transend country and culture. People are either super friendly or completely insular and the former will be overly familiar in their communication sometimes to the point of being totally inappropriate. It's almost like people think that normal rules do not apply whilst on vacation.
Another point is not speaking a language not understood by a third party in a group. If all understand one particular language, then speak that language so that it does not isolate an individual in a group.
I would add not being confident in your own shoes. I see young men often walk, talk and act like they weren't confident with who they were, which often results in some awkward situations.
Well how can you be confident If you're constantly bombarded by the media with people who are much better in pretty much any aspect of life. A society which tells you you can be anything is also a society with a high status anxiety.
Another's success should be inspirational not deflating. Instead of saying "they're so much better than I'll ever be", say "one day I'll be just as good as them". ;)
Thank you for this video! I am a middle school teacher. I look forward to sharing these with my students, so they are aware of modern manners they should be practicing. The cellphone is a huge issue! I understand that it is a device we use in case of emergencies, but during lessons, its rude to see cellphones out and students' attentions shut off. Thanks for the helpful tips! :)
11 : Write emails well. Polite intro with name, starting with a bit of empathy is always nice, no typos, clear and not over-lengthy writing, no gossips, no insults (texts stay) and nice formal ending.

These are so important as a woman, I am astounded at how many of these guidelines are not followed today, if you take this mans advice, the woman really truly appreciate the effort more than you know if you're in it for a date, but I personally have more respect for men like this who show respect to others and to themselves.

I’ve also seen something new I never saw before in the last 5 years. People are avoiding being social in a form of social anxiety or social escapism by looking at their phone and not you. I’ve seen this with strangers on the street, with customers in a store, with people in a park. As the receiver, I perceive is as rude and that they’re trying to ignore and avoid me. Maybe that’s not the reality and they’re just really busy but the first impression is that I’m being avoided. Crazy that this is the immediate first impression but it is there.

It's funny way back when I was a young enlisted Marine, many many years ago. We had very strict dress codes and you had to get liberty cards to go off bass. Camp guard walked around on base and you had to comply with the dress code. You never wore your cover indoor, and that applied to your ball cap or any other hat as well. Sr. enlisted Marines pressed and creased thier jeans and even blocked and pressed thier ball cap. A shirt was never worn untucked, and of course you wore a belt. I was brought up in the Corps that way, and I am very proud and grateful for someone like you. To teach the modern generation how to take pride in themselves. Semper fi, Top

I've been to the restaurant with friends and coworkers and there is always someone checking something in their mobile. Arghhh! I usually go to the washroom to check it out, if it is important. Just a little tip Antonio to improve your video making: Because you don't move a lot during your videos, lock your autofocus in place. Find your focus and leave it there. There were times during this video that your face got out of focus.

Sadly, people have lost respect for one another in today's society.
While out at the market today, in my way outside a store (while holding lots of grocery bags) I held the door open for the woman coming out behind me... not only did she not say thank you, but didn't even have the curtesy to acknowledge the fact that I held the door for her. Nevertheless, I'd do it all over again because I want to believe that all humanity isn't yet lost.

If you refer to people by their name, then you're more likely to remember it and this goes together VERY well with making introductions. Especially if it's a girl, or someone you want to like you, and you see them standing alone and you're in a circle of people. Be the kind of person who walks over and says: "Hi, you should join us; I'll introduce you to everyone."
This demonstrates 2 things:
1) Strength. That you have influence over a group of people. They are willing to let someone new into their circle because you say so.
2) Not selfish. That person is going to feel safe with you, and feel like they have a stronger connection with you then all the other people in that room because you saved them from a potentially akward situation. Noone likes being in a room where they don't know anyone; it's boring, it's akward, and you feel out of place. If you can rescue someone from that, you'll appear to be strong, but also generous in their eyes. Coming across as strong AND generous is hard to pull off, and this is the perfect situation to show that person you can be both.
You make a great point, regarding cellphones, and punctuality.
It is especially critical to stay off you're cellphone, and be on time, when in the dating world. When you're going on a date, show up on time; perhaps even a little bit early, and when you're actually on your date, stay off your cellphone, and give your date your full attention.

Love this video. Introductions are something I've always struggled with. You should do a video on restaurant/dinner party etiquette. Stuff like bringing a bottle of wine when someone invites you for dinner, complimenting the cooking from the host, putting the cloth in your lap when you sit down at a restaurant. I've noticed this is lost on so many people.
I would probably use "A lack of vocabulary" over "A lack of education". I met many bright minds throughout University that swore a lot during our conversations.
I also agree so much with your bonus point. I travelled a lot during my youth and the locals were always super nice and kind to me. People going out of their way to help me, while a lot of my friends were met with cold shoulders or shunned away. I always smiled at everyone I interacted with, engaged in conversations despite language barriers and I tried to be genuinely nice. Because of that people were so nice to me. My friends however used to look down upon others. Didn't show them respect and were extremely rude. So their experiences were very different from mine. This even happened in our home country. Being nice to the waiters and other workers makes them treat you a lot better.
I just had a conversation today with someone who said people who curse sound unsophisticated. I don't know if it's my Italian family or being from Brooklyn or working a lot of blue collar jobs in my life but I always felt that cursing was another way to express yourself. I don't like negativity or hate talk but cursing is just words to me. I guess i need to clean up my fucking mouth. lol.

In my experience, unless your curse words are AIMED at a person for no reason, especially at who you're talking with, that's a problem. If you go out of your way to curse and it just sounds unnatural, that's a problem. Most other cursing is usually not, especially with people who have some life experience. Most of these people who say cursing makes you a bad person or something along those lines usually have A LOT of rules like these. "You stand a certain way? You're bad" "You answer my questions? That's talking back" "You look into my eyes? That's disrespectful lower your gaze". Best to ignore these people. And the last one is from my own personal experience lol
Andrew Attard It depends on who you are speaking to. I will swear when talking with work colleagues casually out in the field, but never in the office. I will swear when having a few beers with the boys, but not if we are walking down the street. I will swear while talking to my brothers, but not when speaking to anyone else in my family. I will never swear while speaking to strangers or aquaintances. I cant stand people who swaer no stop no matter where they are
I avoid frequent swearers. They make me feel uncomfortable. I basically have the same feelings about the person as if they were farting or saying something racist. If they were a customer I would talk to them less. If they were a supplier I would keep my interations brief and quietly look for another supplier. I once entered a room at work where a conversation was going on. The swearing was especially bad, but the subject of the conversation was casual, like fishing, sports, or whatever. Not religion or politics. No one was angry. I started tallying the swear words per minute. 21 swear words per minute. I left the room and came back an hour later to do what I needed to do.
Sometimes a waiter or restaurant manager will come over to our group of coworkers to schmooze when we are at lunch and pepper the the conversation with word farts (curse words) and it has the opposite of its intended effect and it gets very awkward and we just want them to leave. If a salesman that is prone to swearing offers to take my wife and I out to dinner, I will always decline. I don't want my wife mad at me for putting her through that. It's very unprofessional. Just be aware that for some people it is as off putting as being handed a dog turd.

I'm offended when people are abused, corporate greed, selfishness, human rights violations, violence etc. I like that we live in a country where people are allowed to express themselves and I think swearing is a part of your identity if you want it to be. I think it's so minor compared to the real problems in the world. I don't get what you're saying at all.

I have impressed former bosses by my refusal to talk behind a coworkers back by telling my boss, " Uh, sorry boss, but I haven't had the opportunity to tell him what I think of him to his face, and since he is not here to defend himself, I'd rather not say." This amazes them and they would tell me that the other guy was just in their office and didn't give me the same courtesy! " Doesnt matter, I have my own morals.", I'd say.

Lol. Your replies made me laugh. Keep in mind whatever is in style now is going to be precieved as stupid in about a decade (Just look up '90s, '80s, or '70s fashion. What freaks!!) but trendy is not the same as stylish. If you take time to acknowledge the science of dressing (yes there is a science to it) and clad yourself in a way that expresses confidence AND self-respect you will always look good.
The point you make about the difference between etiquette and manners is very important. Always kind of thinking about the two as kind of the same; there is a huge gap. As an adult, there is no excuse for bad manners.

I'd say so. In many Hispanic cultures it is quite normal to speak loudly while in Europe that is seen as offputting. It really depends. I find I speak loudly with friends but when I'm at work my tone is lowered considerably when I talk to customers as I dont want to come off as disrespectful or pushy

Great video! I totally agree with you on multiple points, especially the impact that cell phones have on common courtesy. It's funny, I read an article recently about how not putting exclamation points at the end of sentences is becoming poor etiquette which is absurd.
A couple simple modern manner mistakes are avoiding eye contact, fidgeting and not specifically responding to what people are talking about.
I only have two issues with the video...

How behaviours change when people are on vacation is fascinating - I spend more time on vacation than most because it is my passion and what my RUclips Channel is about and regardless of which part of the world we visit, the same behaviours can be observed and they seem to transend country and culture. People are either super friendly or completely insular and the former will be overly familiar in their communication sometimes to the point of being totally inappropriate. It's almost like people think that normal rules do not apply whilst on vacation.

Another point is not speaking a language not understood by a third party in a group. If all understand one particular language, then speak that language so that it does not isolate an individual in a group.

Being in-confidant isn't a bad habit you can just drop, and has many layers.

I’ve also seen something new I never saw before in the last 5 years. People are avoiding being social in a form of social anxiety or social escapism by looking at their phone and not you.
I’ve seen this with strangers on the street, with customers in a store, with people in a park.
As the receiver, I perceive is as rude and that they’re trying to ignore and avoid me. Maybe that’s not the reality and they’re just really busy but the first impression is that I’m being avoided.
Crazy that this is the immediate first impression but it is there.

It's funny way back when I was a young enlisted Marine, many many years ago. We had very strict dress codes and you had to get liberty cards to go off bass. Camp guard walked around on base and you had to comply with the dress code. You never wore your cover indoor, and that applied to your ball cap or any other hat as well. Sr. enlisted Marines pressed and creased thier jeans and even blocked and pressed thier ball cap. A shirt was never worn untucked, and of course you wore a belt. I was brought up in the Corps that way, and I am very proud and grateful for someone like you. To teach the modern generation how to take pride in themselves. Semper fi,
