Honnestly, it looks fantastic ! Even the low light looks clean, of cours super dark and moody, but clean. As a 100% amateur, I got the iPhone 15 Pro and I'm going to use it and try to push it to its limits, but man... except the lack of blurry background this LOG profile turns the iPhone into a pretty capable machine. @@nadiezhda96You must be new to iPhones. It’s the usual BS every time they have a new phone release. It’s just typical clickbait from RUclipsrs and hating from Android users. Both should be ignored. The phones are great as usual; this generation particularly so.
I have been figuring out the log specs and details for Apple log. I appreciate the tip of shooting under. Thats something I typically don't like to do and seems counter intuitive to a weaker sensor but what you said makes sense. Exposing higher forces the camera to raise ISO which is very bad on this camera. I also found Apple log to have about 14 stops of DR. 8 under and 6 over. At ISO 55-400 however the video saturates or clips around 79 IRE which makes it only about 3 stops over. Shooting under by 2 stops does really help shift the shadow stops into the much needed highlight stops creating a better balance. Especially for HDR where we may want better highlights. The odd thing is above ISO 400 the clip pod nt gradually lifts as well. Eventually getting to 100 IRE but at that point the noise is so bad I think it's a really bad way to go. Your solution to shoot under by two stops is much better.
@@sloppysteaks When I measured the DR I did so using the Apple published white paper for Apple Log which only developers have access to right now. I used the log encoding formula to figure out how many stops the log curve is capable of. Doesn't mean thats whats always used of course. Down to -8 stops we still have 4 10bit samples left which is pretty much dead but other log formats still count that very bottom garbage stop so I will as well. The 1023 sample is just a tad over 6 stops over. ISO up to 400 like I said clips around 79% or IRE which is a bit over 3 stops. Maybe 3.5 or a tad more. I have not calculated yet the exact amount of a partial stop. Not that it really matters. This ia pretty good log curve that begs for a better Apple camera. It's not C-log 2, S-log 3 or Arri log C3 territory but it's still a pretty good and capable log curve. The black point is a bit high at 15%. C-log 2 for example is 9.3%. C-log 3 is 12.5%. Can you tell I'm a Canon user? Middle gray is really high at 49 IRE and 90% reflectance is at 68 IRE which again is super high for a log format. Again why shooting under I think actually works so well with this format. As a log format it's kind of lifted 2 stops higher than some other log formats. Two stops under is 33 IRE which is just about what middle gray is for C-log 3 or C-log 1. In fact it's really a lot like C-log 1 when shooting 2 stops under. 5.3 stops over and 6 stops under vs 7 stops under of C-log 1. Not bad for a phone.
@@digitaldevigner4080 nice work! Pretty similar to what we found in real world, I won’t reveal just yet until the video is up, but I think there might even be a native ISO up around 1250, which is obviously not great considering the noise. Can you film in log with iPhone 14 pro with an app? Is it as good or just way worse?
No it’s only 15 pro’s
@@sloppysteaks I’ve seen people use filmic pro for log, but was wondering if it’s legit or just a name they use to make it seem like it is
I enjoyed your video, I thought it was well-balanced and had a logical perspective, thank you. What I am continually surprised by is the following facts, iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro's can all display HDR for editing purposes, why none of the hundreds of video talking about Pro Log have not been produced a review around HDR, and workflow. All the more given Vimeo and RUclips will stream HDR. Justr my humble observation.
It’s the first setting I turn off when I get a new iPhone. I think HDR looks terrible in photos and video.
@@sloppysteaks you know more than I but I am not meaning film in HDR, I am saying film in Log and keep a Log to HDR output. Why take this footage and downgrade to Rec.709?
@@Coatsey007 because you didn’t shoot in HDR. You can’t just finish it in HDR unless your entire image pipeline was for it. It won’t display correctly, and the reason you’re not seeing many talk about HDR is frankly nobody really likes how it looks.
@@sloppysteaksI appreciate the feedback. I am wondering what I'm doing and why others are not. I shoot in Sony HLG and keep an HDR workflow and pipeline. It seems to work, but as I said, I'm not good at content or even editing but I do like the look. An example of this is a video that works on normal and HDR-compatible TV or displays.
