Living in the UK, I bought a G80. I wasn't expecting much from the AF in video, but I tend to lock focus anyway, so this is not a problem for me. However, I DID have occasion to use the continuous AF, and found it performed perfectly well - certainly as well as on a Sony A6000 that I previously owned - so am not quite sure why people are so critical of it. Using an Olympus 14-42mm lens, even despite the lack of Panasonic's depth from defocus facility, the camera was able to lock onto focus in less than a second, which is fine for me. Once it had locked, it stayed in focus perfectly.
In my opinion G80 / G85 AF in video is very, very far from perfect, especially in 4K and according to my side by side testing, it is nowhere near Sony A6X00 series hybrid AF, I have mede whole video about G85 / G80 video AF, with plenty of AF fail samples ruclips.net/video/YpQ8Ce-v7pE/видео.html
The Hybrid Shooter I know all about that, but I'm just saying that the example I now have in my possession works fine. I owned a couple of GX80s for a while, which exhibited rather shoddy AFC performance, but this particular G80 is fine.
By accident I was shooting with the AF on rather than MF (new camera, my fault!) and I was surprised at how well it did. Once I figured out it was using AF I just stuck with it. I loved being able to touch the screen, have it adjust focus, and keep shooting. Since I don't shoot a TON of video I'm not as good with MF as I'd like to be. Anyways, so far really like this camera. I tried the A6300 but the battery, rolling shutter and terrible menu system pushed me back to Panasonic (I previously had the GH4 and also the A7SII, and while the A7SII was insane in low light and I loved the images I got out of it, the battery life was terrible and the menu was also not very good, plus.. $$$$$$$$).
For wildlife defendly the G9 .... The Crop is unbeatable in wildlife photographie ... Its is allmost made for this type of usecase and the great thing is that you have more depth of field at the same apature plus the extra focal length. So the lost on ISO performance is just not a problem anymore like for every MFT camera at long focal length lenses. You can't fotograph on fullframe camera with a 400mm lens at F2.8 because the depth of field is just about 3cm... The Crop let's you use 200mm FF aquiv. at 400mm but you have the depth of field of a 200mm lens... :D
For wildlife it seems to be great, but I would like to use it as all-round camera, which is why I have to think about other characteristics. Thank you for watching!
I agree with others, get the G9 ^_^ I'm contemplating it myself, especially with that large viewfinder and the selectable zoom level within it. I'm really hoping that it has one of the features I really like that the G85 has though - no polarization of the EVF.. I almost always wear prescription sunglasses that are polarized whenever I'm out and about, so it's insanely handy to be able to keep using it while sunglasses are on!
I also wear prescription glasses, but I always take them off while shooting, although I agree, that it is nice to able to shoot with polarized glasses and I don't expect that it will change. Thank you for watching!
Ah, I wish I had the luxury of removing glasses, but my prescription more or less requires me to keep the lenses on, which kind of works out in the end because I'm light sensitive and have to wear tinted lenses of some sort anyways when out and about. While I'd love to get the G9 on release, I'd rather put the money into lenses right now, doubly so given my love of low light and/or night photography, as the kit lens definitely isn't happy about trying to do such.
Wonder Jamie Test them both out because Panasonic autofocus isn't as bad as people make out to be its just that you have mess with it more compare to Canon's dualpixel autofocus

Hi. I always enjoy your videos. I just bought a Panasonic G9 and your opinions influenced on buying it. Thanks. Now I would like to acquire a second body just as a B-Camera, and I was thinking in the Lumix G95 and the G85. Of course, the prices nowadays put the G85 in a more attractive option, but anyway I would like your valuable opinion. If spending a few hundred more in a G95 will make a huge difference, I will go that way, but if not, definitely I will prefer the G85. I currently own the GX85 as well, which I enjoy using alongside my G9, but I wanted a more robust body than the GX85. The GH5 would still be in my wish list, but the price of that beauty is out of my range. Or should I wait? I don't know... Thanks! Keep the good work!
DSTE makes a battery grip that comes with a wireless trigger that works perfectly. I paid $65 CAD for mine, and it's dropped to $55 now. Pretty cheap if you want to try one without the $350 price tag.
I want to get a 4k Camera to shoot 24fps for my youtube channel/ Close up review videos/ Vlogs and some skating content. I have watched alot of material but can`t really find too much that justifies buying a 1600 USD G9 to me compared picking up a new 2 year old GX85 model for half the price. Given with the youtube compression even on 4K, do you guys recommend the G9 over the GX85 for 4K filming? Yes the camera has some great features for stills but i need a 4K 24fps camera and the latest firmware seemed to fix a lot of the auto focus issue.
I definitely recommend G85 over GX85, but the G9 is much better camera overall, the video quality is significantly better and the autofocus is much more reliable. There is a lot of G9 video in my G9 playlist: ruclips.net/video/C8SU-fS67Yw/видео.html
I have d3300 and g85. D3300 has dynamic range of 12.98 while g85 has 12.5 which is good enough if your settings are on flat profiles. The only problem which makes me hate both d3300 and g85 is the focus hunting. The low light performance of g85 is given.
Such a hard choice between this and the a6500. I want to retain my sigma 18-35 when I upgrade, but the metabones is so expensive if I go with the g85. On the other hand, the MC11 is cheaper, but total cost of the rig would be equivalent if I go with the a6500 because the body is more expensive. I wish canon stepped up their game in the 4K arena. If the a6500 didn’t have rolling shutter and battery issues, this might be an easier choice. Maybe I’ll wait till the next round of bodies to upgrade! Sony needs to focus on usability - Panasonic seems to have the consumer in mind always. Makes me want to support them more :)
Yeah this combo looks incredible in your videos. Again, big concerns for me are battery life when shooting 4K, rolling shutter, and Sony software/user experience (Sony has always lacked finesse in that department). I know you addressed these in your other video, but still kind of irks me. Interested to see what the next iteration of the a-line fixes.
I love having both a G85 and an a6300 - a great complementary pair. The G9 is an exciting camera, but I think I will focus on lenses for a while and try not to think about the new bodies coming out! I will be interested to see what your experiences and preferences are if you move towards more telephoto wildlife work, as I'm also interested in moving in that direction in the future. Cheers
G9 seems to be excellent wildlife camera, although non-specialized cameras like A7R III and D850 are very good at tracking as well, so I will have to think about it. Thank you for watching!
about the 7-14. if i have a 12-35 F2.8 isnt it better for me just to buy the laowa 7.5mm f2.0 instead? because i will only use the zoom range on the 7-14 up to 11 and its F4
+Labba Depends on your preferences, I prefer 7-14 because of the AF, in-camera corrections and it is more flexible. If you need to shoot in low light, and don't need focal range, Laowa is good as well, although it has to be stopped down for better sharpness.
I also have and love the cam. I use a third party BatteryGrip and it is perfect works the same as the original one for amazingly less and one more battery is a godsend since I make long videós (2-3 hour long sometimes) if the insied battery is out it automatically changes to the battery inside the grip. Double battery life (and you can change the battery inside the grip WHILE you are shooting video using the battery inside the cam...marvelous)
hi i need your help i currently have a sony A6300 as A camera and i have a G7 lumix with speedboster and a Sony A6000. i need to sell one of them and decide what my B camera will be if the G7 or the A6000. The G7 is 4K but i need to mach the colors with the A6300, The A6000 have good autofocus and is sharp but dont have 4K.
You said give an opinion of what you should get. I'd say an A7Riii and a G9, they are the perfect companions! ;) But only if money grows on trees where you live. It doesn't here, unfortunately. If you are primarily shooting with a G85 and A6500, and have a limited budget, do not get either. Wait for the A7iii or get a good used A7Rii for stills. Save money for a good Sony lens or two--and believe me you will have to save for them because yowsa! $$$$. It would be just way cheaper to get a G9 if you have to have get gouged on a new camera that will depreciate really quickly anyhow. Get one of the premium Pana/Oly lenses and you're still saving a lot of money over a split Sony/Panasonic system. I think the G9 will make the A6500 redundant, but so would the A7Riii.
I have already pre-ordered Panasonic G9 but I will definitely keep Sony A6500, it still has some key advantages over Panasonic and I need at least two camera for production purposes anyway. Regarding A7R III, it will depend how much time I will be able to allocate for content creation and how will my channels grow. Thank you for your thoughts!
There is an Olympus 9mm f8. That is reasonable, not amazing, but not expensive. Not as good as the 7-14mm, but a cheaper option if you need wide angled.
The Hybrid Shooter it is wide angle though and inexpensive. They sounded like funds were limited, so it is an option they can try in a shop and see if it fits their needs (as we don't know what they need it for, it may be ideal for what they are intending to use it for?). Just offering an option for them to explore...
Usually I would agree, but "body cap" lenses are so bad they are literary not wort trying, it only has two focus positions and F8 on MFT is only usable on bright day. Judging optical qualities of a lens is shop is also quite difficult.
The Hybrid Shooter I see, there’s a RUclipsr said gx9 will release on February next year, can you give me some advices to get the rangefinder style or SLR style if I shoot 70% photo and 30% video, as much as I like and consider myself a video shooter, I didn’t shoot much video and publish a short video compare photo as I don’t have the time to plan and edit, so photos I shot is way more than video I shoot. I hope it’s not big, small but good handling and last long without need to upgrade or pick a second camera. Also I can take it to anywhere and shoot without making subject uncomfortable especially street photography.
Rangefinder or DSLR is purely matter of preference, I personally own both rangefinder and DSLR style mirrorless camera and I equally like to use both. If you want the the best ratio of size and picture quality, Sony A6x00 series is probably the best, but the lens selection is rather poor and handling is not that great either.
I just got a g80 for 600€ in Black Friday, even though I’m a videographer I think I would pick the g9 over the gh5 right now, but I’m waiting for the GH5s specs because i am a dance videographer and low light is crucial for me, that’s why canon is my pick of choice for professional use.
That is really good price, if low light is priority for you, there are better choices than Micro Four Thirds right now, and even though I expect GH5s to be really good in low light, I still don't think that it will be anywhere near Sony A7S ii which will also be cheaper.
The kind of videos I make is event coverage, since it's dancing, I always must use a LED light pointed to the dancers, so I've been doing ok with my 80D, I haven't felt the need to upgrade for a Sony A7SII. Autofocus continuous is more crucial than any other aspect in the camera, that's why I will use the G80 mainly for my travel and vlogging stuff. 😁 By the way, how about the olympus pro 7-14 which is weather sealed? I'm considering that over the panasonic 7-14, the only problem I see (despite the price difference) is the size being a bit bigger, but I want to use this G80 in the beach, so maybe a weather sealed lens should be a good option because of the air humidity?
With Olympus you loose DFD autofocus technology, so it hunts more and in-camera corrections are not as good, so I personally still recommend Panasonic 7-14mm. Panasonic 8-18mm is weather sealed, but it is more expensive, bigger and 7mm is much wider than 8mm on MFT.
I mean the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO M.Zuiko ED, is there a need to use autofocus with the 7-14 anyway? Thanks for your replies as always, great that I found your channel. 🙏
The Hybrid Shooter I am not a professional either I am planning to be a professional photographer. I am an animal lover and my purpose is to capture animal behaviour in my camera. So for a beginner/intermediate photographer G80/85 is good? Thank you
Just my Opinion right here: I think when you really just want to shoot Wildlife for example you should get G9 instead of A7RIII. G9 should have better autofokus (for stills) and the 2.0 crop factor will help alot when looking for zoom lenses.
The thing is that I don't intend to shoot wildlife that much, I want it as an all-round camera, I really like the controls and futures of G9 which is why I am considering guying G9.
controls and handling from panasonic is much superior to Sony's labyrinth like menue structure. Like always. That was also one of the main points for me as I had to choose between G80 / 85 and 6500. Don't think that this has will change for A7RIII and G9.
That is true, but on the other hand Sony has much superior sensor, I don't think that would change either, although Panasonic says that there are significant improvements.
Haha! ; Even though you want to keep your G85, you are just about convincing me to trade my GX8 for an A6500 or maybe even an A7! I mostly shoot stills, and no longer professionally. But I expect a high degree of performance from my equipment. I just traded my Canon EOS-M due to its disappointing 12mP resolution. I'm finding that APS-C was really not so bad itself, just that the EOS-M was Canon's half-hearted attempt at mirrorless. So, it's gone. I like the tilt EVF and twist/tilt LCD of the GX8, but I'm not sure the 4:3 won't overcome that. I like a thin, cine-like, horizontal format, like 3:2, even for stills. Well, I'm glad I'm in a position to buy used on eBay and play around with cameras. Doing so with motorcycles and cars just about broke me!
Any suggestion I have the gh5s and im frustrated that panasonic didnt incude ibis on it. Could anyone recommend which one to get G85 or g9 to compliment my gh5s and serve as my b camera. The main purpose of my b camera is to provide usable handheld shots and some high qual stills.
Hi the hybrid shooter, I very like yours chanel, good job. Can you help me please. I currently looking for a new lens to take a photo and video my two years son, most time I have opportunity for doing this this at home. I would like to buy 25m 1.7 or 42 5 1.7. Can you help me make a decision please?
I am having the 25mm f/1.4 and the 42.5 f/1.7 and a 2 and 1/2 years old girl. the 42.5 is very good when your kid is playing or sitting and you can be at a distance, but for most of the walk and moving around occasion, best is the 25mm. I would say the 25mm is more useful, especially if you also want to take shot of your wife with your son. You can check my shots, mostly done on Panasonic M43 cameras: www.francperet.com/?s=apolline
As much as I'd wish this was the perfect camera, there's still the sensor's color depth which doesn't match that of APS-C and FF cameras, is that because it's a smaller sensor? I like the fact that Panasonic makes some of the lightest lenses, and it's unfortunate that they don't let you choose to buy it alone, to choose what lens you want. I'm very interested in purchasing a camera like this in the future. Personally, I wish it had at least 24 mp. Despite having lower dynamic range than larger sensors, I think that the fact that telephoto lenses can be smaller might be a perfect tradeoff.
The difference in depth of color on modern cameras are basically impossible to see in the real world, what you probably mean is dynamic range and color science.
Generally there is no need to be concerned about color depth on any modern camera and if you look at DxO results, you also need to read their explanation: "A color sensitivity of 22bits is excellent, and differences below 1 bit are barely noticeable."
I am using Panasonic since the GH1/GH2/GH3/GH4/G85 and I always had interest in Fujifilm offer as I like their handling of color the best and I think their lens pricing and quality is really great. I checked the camera, used a while one of my student Fuji but not the XT-20 (I am teaching photography and I am having students with all camera brand). I found the menu layout complicated and too oriented toward color treatment instead of essential set up and even I started Photography back to 1986, I do not think that external mechanical dials are helping. Panasonic or actual Nikon camera command layout is much more efficient for photojournalism or street photography. A switch at your thumb or finger level, or a wheel will allow you to change ISO, Aperture, focus mode or compensation without getting your eyes out of the viewfinder. Old style or vintage camera look is beautiful, but not friendly to use. It grabs too much of the attention of the photographer (who has to get down the camera to change a setting) out of what matters: the subject and the composition. Also, I do not feel that Fuji are as sturdy as Panasonic bodies. www.francperet.com
Hey there than you for your video man! I have a question, i had the possibility to work with a gh5 for a month and i liked it, i saw the g9 coming out and i wasnt sure anymore about which one to choose since i m in the middle between photo and videomaking, i like the ibis, hopefully autofocus better in the g9 , i dont really care about the 10 bit since i usually use 120fps to film video. The thing that holds me down N coming to the question is, i noticed g9 as g85 have longgop codec at 28mbs at 1080, gh5 100mbs. Less mbs should have less color information and a lower quality footage, i never had the possibility to test the g85, what are your thoughts about it? Thank you for your time
100 mbps captures more information than 28 mbps, question is whether you do very heavy color grading and if you can take full advantage of that 100 mbps codec. In reality those high MB codecs in GH5 provide just very slight advantage at the cost of increased performance requirements for post production. I shoot very little 1080p but I have never had problems with codec falling apart in color grading with G85.
Please I will be very grateful if someone can respond to my question as I've been asking everywhere but everyone just ignores it. QUESTION When the G85 is connected to a 4k external recorder, does the screen go off when recording internally in 4k? In other words, I want to record to an external recorder and internally at the same time and still be able to use the camera screen. This is not possible on G7.
So, do you think the G85 is still a good camera in 2019? The price is hard to pass up. Also, did you get the Sony when you reached 10k subs? You have almost 4 times that now. (38k)

Yes - please buy! Just discovered your channel and while I need to outgrow my G85 - it would be nice to see where to go next.

Thanks, I would actually like to step up the quality :)

Hi what aspect ratio do you shoot your youtube videos in when using the g85 ? do you change it when using different lenses?
I always shoot video in 16:9, i shoot stills in 4:3 with G85 and crop them for video.
The Hybrid Shooter if I have video shot in 4:3 ratio how would you correct this by changing the output ratio in premier pro?
By using scaling option, but I certainly wouldn't shoot 4:3 video in the first place.
Which camera is good for still images??? Lumix G85 or canon 80D????
Both are good.
How do you like the 95?
Much less than I liked the G80 when it was new-ish
So are you using g85 for video more than a6500?
No, I use A6500 more.
hi
i need your help i currently have a sony A6300 as A camera and i have a G7 lumix with speedboster and a Sony A6000. i need to sell one of them and decide what my B camera will be if the G7 or the A6000.
The G7 is 4K but i need to mach the colors with the A6300, The A6000 have good autofocus and is sharp but dont have 4K.
Depends on whether you need 4K, if not A6000 will probably serve you better.
Thanks, i will keep the A6000
You said give an opinion of what you should get.
Dober Dan! Thanks for the good info!
Hi can u suggest any affordable and best wide lens for g85?
I really like that 7-14mm F1.4, unfortunately I don't know about any affordable wide angle MFT lenses, those are unfortunately all quite expensive.
There is an Olympus 9mm f8. That is reasonable, not amazing, but not expensive. Not as good as the 7-14mm, but a cheaper option if you need wide angled.
That is a weird lens with very limited use, I definitely don't recommend to by that.
Upcoming Gx9 rangefinder shape or G95 SLR shape for hybrid shooter?
We don't know much about those yet, I personally like the shape and controls of G9.
And about the rear top dial on g85, there’s a small circle in the center of the dial, what’s it, is it a lock button or just aesthetic?
Rangefinder or DSLR is purely matter of preference, I personally own both rangefinder and DSLR style mirrorless camera and I equally like to use both. If you want the the best ratio of size and picture quality, Sony A6x00 series is probably the best, but the lens selection is rather poor and handling is not that great either.
That circle separates mode dial from drive mode selector. You can lock mode dial using button on the top of the dial.
For vloging you definitely need to use AF, even at 7mm, especially when shooting objects near to the camera.
Get the g9
Yeah, I probably will.
Is this good for wildlife photography?
To certain extent, it is. If you need very fast and accurate tracking, you need to go for the G9 bit.ly/panasonicg9
The Hybrid Shooter I am not a professional either I am planning to be a professional photographer. I am an animal lover and my purpose is to capture animal behaviour in my camera. So for a beginner/intermediate photographer G80/85 is good?
Thank you
It still depends on whether you need to capture fast moving animals. If not, G85 is OK.
Depends on whether you prefer quality of results or the handling, A6000 series with sharp sigma lenses is hard to beat in terms of image quality.
Any suggestion
I have the gh5s and im frustrated that panasonic didnt incude ibis on it. Could anyone recommend which one to get
G85 or g9 to compliment my gh5s and serve as my b camera.
The main purpose of my b camera is to provide usable handheld shots and some high qual stills.
Get the G9 if your budget allows is.
Depends on what field of view do you prefer, both are optically very good lenses, and both are good choices for the price.
I was thinking about DXOmark sensor measurements
Generally there is no need to be concerned about color depth on any modern camera and if you look at DxO results, you also need to read their explanation: "A color sensitivity of 22bits is excellent, and differences below 1 bit are barely noticeable."
Ahh, I see. I thought that color depth was the culprit behind the banding in my photos, especially when it has to do with the sky and after editing.
That is interesting, I have never had problems with banding on G85, that is usually a problem with Canon sensors.
This or the 80d?
Depends on what you intend to use it for.
The Hybrid Shooter short films travel films RUclips videos and professional use like music videos e.t.c
I would go with G85 for that.
The Hybrid Shooter thanks and are there any cheap lens options ?
@@danyalvisuals 12-60mm F3.5-5.6, 20mm F1.7 II, 25mm F1.7, 42.5mm F1.7
Great stuff, bro. You might wanna check the pronounciation of launch, so you don't confuse it with lunch ;-)
Thank you!
G85 or x-t20?
Difficult to say, depends on your preferences and what you shoot, both are very good cameras.
Okk thank you for your answer man, hope to see a good review of the g9 from you :)
Please I will be very grateful if someone can respond to my question as I've been asking everywhere but everyone just ignores it.
QUESTION
When the G85 is connected to a 4k external recorder, does the screen go off when recording internally in 4k?
In other words, I want to record to an external recorder and internally at the same time and still be able to use the camera screen. This is not possible on G7.
I would really like to answer, but I unfortunately don't have external recorder, sorry about that.
The Hybrid Shooter Thanks for your response nonetheless.
I bet you'll get more viewers once you get G9 and review it :D
Yeah, the amount that would pay for G9 would be ideal :D just kidding, view count is not really a priority for me.
g9 has improved video af
Yes, it seems so, although it probably still won't be 100% reliable.
So, do you think the G85 is still a good camera in 2019? The price is hard to pass up. Also, did you get the Sony when you reached 10k subs? You have almost 4 times that now. (38k)
It is still a great camera at that price point. I didn't get A7R III, but I I actually got A7 III around the time I had about 10K subscribers :D
Spoiler: He bought the G9.
U say Sony G85 in the video!!!! Opps
Where? I didn't noticed that.
0.10 panasony g85

I totally agree
Glad to hear that, thank you for watching!
G9, over sony!
get the g9
I already have it - bit.ly/panasonicg9
