A lot of people hate Carly "for some reason" but I guess feel warm and fuzzy about some other Idol personality and perceive her to be a threat to their faves longevity...which she clearly is. What a talent! Voice, power, control. Listening to her sing every week is a pleasure. Somebody sent me the studio mp3 of Black Bird and I was hooked.
Yahoo! rated this performance as one of the Top 10 Idol performances on the show this year. In my opinion the other nine should have been the balance of Carly's output on the show. This Smithson woman is one hell of a singer.

This song is a slam dunk song choice for 1983 (Carly's birth year) because it was a No. 1 Billboard hit and it combined quiet parts with belting. Perfect for rock ballad for Idol, especially for singers with the range to pull it off. Yes, I noted that too at the end when she shout/sings that one line (about three lines from the end) you can hear her Irish accent in there a bit. I loved this performance. Ryan's flush comment was typical Seacrest. Although his comment about her teeth was cute.
Damn it Carly was the BEST female singer there is in this competition & she should have been in the Top 2 with David Cook! Remember this is a singing competition ppl! Carly.. can't wait for ur CD.. u totally deserve it all! Love ya! ;)

I LOVE CARLY SMITHSON!! she is so AWESOME!!! she is obviously gonna win!!! i love her!! her voice is unlike any other its just so better than everyone else...i dont like Remiele becuse its just like everyother voice but carly's is just so natural and it doesnt even seem like she is trying to sing her best but she still does sing better you than everyone else!! i love you carly!! im sure of it that you will win!!!!
She is amazing. She is by far the best singer in this competition. I liked this song, it wasn't her best performance, I didn't like that last note, but she is extremely talented.
I actually agree with you amylh322, the last couple of lines before she goes to the softer line at the end is more of shout than should be. This was the one week since Top 12 started that I thought her iTunes studio version, where she doesn't shout at all, was better than the live version Carly delivered on the actually show. Still 95% of this is still very nicely done. I'm looking forward to next weeks performance already. This "Irish girl" is a fascinating change of pace for an Idol! :)
I love the way she finishes this with that wail. Sometimes you have to wonder what Randy is thinking with his pitchey crapola. I think her may be becoming tone deaf with advancing age. I'm not sure were all "used to like her" fans came from over night, oh, yes I am Carly knocked one out of the park and the haters are out. Another best of the night vocal by Carly Smithson last night. The performance is a little flat but rumors are flying that she might be pregnant, so that quick trip to the bathroom kind of makes sense, if that particular bit of gossip pans out. Great job Carly, just keep singing like this and I'll keep voting for you.

Idol is a popularity competition but the great thing is that according to Dial Idol Carly did pretty well last week on votes. So if the group that voted for her last week keeps busy and votes every Tuesday night we might end up with a talented and popular Top3. What a concept! Go Carly.

The backup here are Donnie Hathaway's daughter Kenya, Sharlotte Gibson and Sy Smith. The one who goes back and forth with Carly at the beginning of this song is Ms Gibson. I do prefer the studio version with Carly doing the backups though.
There isn't anyone on Idol in season eight that is close to bringing this quality of performance. The power, control and emotion are simply fantastic.
