Seriously if we could have plucked Carly Smithson out of time and transplanted her to 1982, she would have been a worldwide music star. He voice was perfect for the songs of that era.
Fifteen years later I still come back and listen to this. Now more than ever the lyrics are hitting different. I love this performance, gives chills and tears.
You've got to love how all the people who hate tattoos share a love for some other Idol. LOL Awesome performance by Carly here, so tender and emotional and perfectly phrased. What a gift to hear this "Irish girl" every week. AMAZING TALENT! As long as she doesn't have a tattoo across that gorgeous face I'm good.
PinkLoverSammy, I agree the judges definitely expect more from her than anyone else in the American Idol cast, thankfully Carly Smithson seems to have the vocal skills to deliver it consistently. I've been watching this "Irish girl" since the auditions and she has the chops to sing just about every genre of music extremely well. I love her stage presence too, it is almost like she is singing it to you.
This was a defining moment on this year's Idol. Carly did Dolly proud on this song. She sounds amazing everytime I play this performance back. She's the new Grace Slick.
I think Carly is an absolutely stunning looking woman and her voice OMG is amazing. I cannot wait for her to release a CD. She should not have been voted off, she should have gone on to win, as usual the voting public got it wrong. She is a superb singer and she can sing any kind of music. You rock my world Carly, I love you.
I am so impressed with Carly. My favorite is David Cook, but I also love Carly. Ever since she sang "Crazy on You" I've been a fan. And this performance was amazing. I've never heard this song before and just based on her version I already love it. I appreciate that Simon calls it like he sees it instead of just telling everybody that they are wonderful (a la Paula) but he was way out of line commenting on her clothes. I know it was meant as constructive criticism but that was rude. Yay Ryan!
I loved this performance. It was truly a bellwether performance Carly that not only extended the range of material in her Idol oeuvre but really showed Ms Smithson ability to reinterpret a song and take it away from Idol's pure karoake roots. This is a 10/10 and a top ten all time Idol performances.
This is such a five star performance. To paraphrase Randy, "I do believe that will be one of the better performances of the...next decade or so on this half-baked karaoke show."
Yes, I've watch all seven seasons of and Carly is the best voice I've heard and that includes all the winners. Clearly, she is a "ringer", but she went at a good time (6th place) and is in a great position to live her dream. I'm very happy for her.
See, what is great about Simon is that he knows the wardrobe for Carly is in the works so he comes off a genius and gives himself an "I told you so." moment when he tells Carly that she "Sounded like AND LOOKED like a star tonight." in a few weeks. Simon is like an grizzled old fox and knows what he is doing.
This "Irish girl" was the star. You can see it and hear it clearly in the group performances. She has the chops (range & control), the distinctive tonal quality and really was amazingly consistent in the fact of almost constant bashing from Cowell and Randy too on occasion.
This is simply amazing. Oh, and who cares if she has a tattoo? You are not to judge the person's looks here but their talent. Anyway, Carly has the most powerful voice and the most proffessional. She will go far. No doubt. P.S. I don't think she'll win. We ALL know who will win *rolls eyes*. And I don't think that person would sell. Honestly.
I really didn't like her at first. But through the weeks, she really grew on me. She's got a big voice with a great personality to match. Now I'm looking forward to her performance every week. This season of idol is pretty strong, with really talented singers. Just waiting for Kristy to get the boot though. *frowns*
I agree about the glory note, I like the live version better, I think the note is different in the studio version because the studio version is structured so that the song keeps rising to the part with the bigger power note than the softer one we hear here.
I have to agree that Simon was coming from left field with his comment. This was hands down one of THE best country song renditions done in the show. Mind you, Simon was wrong about Jennifer Hudson so I'm not too surprised with his call on this performance.
This was such a great season, with many beautiful renditions of great songs, such David Cook’s “Always Be My Baby”, Seysha Mercado’s “one rock and roll too many”, Michael Johns’ “it’s all wrong but it’s alright” and my favorite, this one. Carly brought me to tears with sensitive, perfect, delicate version of “Here you come again”. It’s really a shame that Simon was such a jerk with her and put her out of the show. I only imagine the many beautiful presentations that we missed.

This girl was/is truly extraordinary ... her pitch perfect tone, inflexion, vibrato, and especially her effortlessness, always reminded me of Streisand. I think she was that good. The "Two Davids" were more than deserving, but I think Carly was better (vocally).
He totally had it out for her...I truly believe he had a bad taste in his mouth about her from the beginning, and held it against her through out the competition!
For sheer vocal talent, she's the best singer ever to appear on American Idol. She's still finding herself, and still gaining polish, but the voice is an amazing combination of range, power, sharpness, and warmth. If there is no place for her in the music business, then we should scrap the music business. I actually believe Simon likes her, but is frustrated as he realizes that her minor gaffes in self-presentation, dress, etc., could keep her immense talent from translating into stardom.

I don't really judge on the way people dress. But when you're singing a song in a certain way and genre it helps to dress a way the reflects it.
