[Alien Vendetta] MAP14: Overwhelming Odds (UV-Max Demo)

  • ah, overwhelming odds. easily the hardest level so far, but definitely one of the best. it's chock full of lots of spicy encounters, like right at the start when picking up the weapons requires immediately blasting your way through two rings of enemies to avoid dying immediately. once you get out you get an immediate breather though to collect ammo and push switches to unleash even more demons to tear each other apart in the mosh pit below. the corridors to the south have a few tricky moments - the revenant ambush in the radsuit room tore me apart the first time i played this wad - but the next tough fight is in the blue key room. tons of enemies teleport into this room and you're stuck there for 30 seconds. hopefully you didn't forget the bfg, sniped the archvile at the first opportunity, and most importantly, didn't grab the partial invisibility. then after spending a ton of ammo killing pinkies, you're stuck with the surprisingly tough fight of clearing out two cybers with a few mancubi behind them. the mancubi cause the cyberdemons to infight... but how long that lasts is very unpredictable, and it's very easy to die to a rocket here. the caco cloud that follows can be intimidating but if you stand your ground, it's surprisingly tameable. the whole red key section is more annoying than hard, although the barons and imp fight is pretty cool. i don't have a good safe way to deal with the archviles in the pit and so it just takes a while. i probably used too many cells clearing out the revenant ambush too, as when clearing out the rest of the map, i wound up very short on ammo. but i just made it by the skin of my teeth. shoutout to the two cyberdemons in the pit you get to disrespect on your way back; they also soak up a lot of ammo but aren't too dangerous if you know how to handle it.
    lots of great action in this one, but i do wish that the ammo wasn't so centralized; there's definitely a bit more running back and forth than i'd like, and i suspect if i did some more i wouldn't have been short at the end there.
