Arcane Dimensions Review: The REAL Quake 1 Sequel

- Today I wanna talk for 20 minutes about the Quake mod so good, I replace the entire franchise with it. Every time I tried to re-record the narration, I was sick, so I just had to go with the best one. I at least sound less sick about 3 minutes in.
I know in the video I say Crucial Error isn't "as maze-like", but this wasn't in reference to Firetop Mountain: this was moved around from earlier edits, where I made more direct comparisons between Crucial Error and Foggy Bogbottom.
Apologies to anything I might've missed in the credits, some things I used (especially early in editing) were memes I've had saved for literally a decade or longer so I can't be sure of the sauces.
EDIT: In the credits, I noted using the "Duskmoon Tower" soundtrack from Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, which I don't think made it into the final edit. I believe I ended up swapping it out for the song AD uses in the Tears Of The False God level.

Arcane Dimensions is a ridiculously great mod. It contains some of the best level design ever for Quake and it delivers the best possible gaming experience. Particularly the map "Tears of the false gods" might just the most beautiful map ever for Quake. All and all, if you like Quake, do not miss it. It is the absolute best.
Check out Alkaline 1.2, it does for the sci-fi/base (get it, Alkaline lol) theme what AD did for the fantasy/gothic/medieval (even though AD does have some fantastic base themed content). Maps like Tellus Terminus, Derelict Freighter, and Dancing in the Golden Sun go 1:1 if not better with the best AD content in my opinion
I hope and pray they add this as one of the official Add-ons to the current console ports of Quake.
Seriously Quake 2 is not that bad especially what they did with the remaster please give that sequel a little more credit.....
I enjoy Quake 2 a lot more than Quake 1, personally. But maybe I'll try AD and see if I can find something new to like about 1.
The original Quake 2 is rough as hell, but the remaster is fantastic.
cool review, always interesting to see other's people takes on my favorite mods.
I feel compelled to recommend you Dwell. in some ways it surpasses Arcane Dimensions (not to spoil other elements of it, but I can tell you it comes with an amazing original soundtrack).
it requires the Ironwail Quake port (based on Quakespasm-Spiked, but with huge optimizations for modern GPUs, so you can avoid those "overflow" missing models problems on crowded maps).
Holy crap, I never realized what an effect of a Quake 1 sound could be, well at least not like this. I was playing another game and had your video playing, hearing the loud Vore sounds in the beginning of your video triggered a sort of urgent reflex to identify where its coming from and deal with it. Damn, that was incredible. Those guys are vicious.....
Quake is still my nr one love to this day, started playing the DOS version back in the day, learned to use FTP to get mods and maps, etc. etc. etc....
There's a similar effect on me from Shamblers. and Arch-viles. and Sentry Drones.
Yeah I know that feeling
@@GreatFox42 sentry drones? what game are you referring to?
@@purple781 Duke 3D.
Rubicon Rumble, Alkaline and Dwell are as good as Arcane Dimensions and worth checking out.
i already played arcane dimensions i just wanted to watch someone else enjoy this mod. also shoutouts to the shipyard cultic music
>"I just wanted to watch someone else enjoy this mod"
Truly the most cultured comment on any of my videos
Now I wanna see civvie11 do a review of this. ;)
Civvie11 is very over rated
This appeared on my YT recommended *today*. Better late than never, because this is the content for me! Love it, subscribed!
On the topic of ports, it seems you ran the game in vanilla Quakespasm.
This is technically fine, the mod is compatible, but was made with Quakespasm-Spiked in mind, which supports more particles, custom HUD elements, etc. This may also be the cause of some minor pains, but wouldn't fix important complaints, like the rune-pickup. Nowadays, ports like VkQuake and IronWail 100% support AD too. Another personal pet favourite of mine is FTEQW.
You can "turn off" textures in most port with "r_lightmap 1" (or was it "r_lightmaps"?), which replaces the visible textures with pure white, to show off the lighting.
If you feel like making another several gigabyte video file, may I nudge you into the direction of The Immortal Lock? I'm about 4 hours into it, and the end does not seem to be near.
Anyways, great video, gonna go check out your other videos now :D
It's Quake 2. The architecture, the push of the engine and the projectile shotguns.
I always loved Quake 1 but until AD, I never felt like the mechanics and encounters had been fully explored and realized. Like your title says: It's the true Q1 sequel.
All the potential of Quake's gameplay finally unveiled and added unto in a very sensible manner.
The sheer size of the maps make this one a pass for me but I love hearing people discuss A_D. I prefer things like Copper mod combined with "Underdark overbright"
The maps are variable size.
@@mopeybloke The Smaller ones are still way too big and convoluted for me. But I can still appreciate the map designs even if I'm not a fan
I recommend The Immortal Lock, Bonk Jam, and the Xmas Jam for quake some of them are built around AD and copper quake.
Also i recommend Ironwail for a newer better sourceport for quake.
I know this video is old now, but if you're going to update to a new engine, I would suggested either vkQuake (based on quakespasm but with vulkan renderer) or Ironwail.
Was the level called firetop mountain named after the fighting fantasy book The warlock of firetop mountain
2:57 Could you confim the other top-mods/TC?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly
Duke Nukem - Alien armageddon
Hell on Earth starter pack
Death Wish for Blood
ironwail and kex are great for ad too
Kex can't run all of the maps. Ironwail is great, although it doesn't support the custom particles that Quakespasm-Spiked and vkQuake do. Of those, the latter is much better if your PC supports Vulkan. I don't like those particles anyway so I still prefer Ironwail.
can I please have the name of the wad youre playing on HD. Ive been on the biggest HD kick of my life lately..
Can i play this on the nightdive remake? Or on steam deck?
Cool video except the stalker anomaly part lol
Soooo, having a 2k computer to play that old fart named Quake 1 ?
6:00 anime name?
i always thought quake 1 single player was super lame and a massive downgrade from doom. and it is, probably because computers at the time couldn't handle too many monster at a time so they had to make fully polygonal games lame to compensate. it was the same with warcraft3.
this looks insanely cool though. freed from its 486 / pentium shackles, quake can stretch its legs and have some cool, fast paced, high action gameplay. honestly it looks better than almost any modern commercial "boomer shooter" (with the exception of doom eternal which i love)
The real heir to Quake is WRATH: Aeon of Ruin.
I was considering doing a WRATH video when it finally released because I'd been super hyped for it after playing the "demo" years ago, but I ended up really not enjoying it. TTK on enemies varies from just a bit too long for smaller mobs, to outright wasting half my ammo supply with the Caco-like things, who are spammed so much it makes the game feel like a grind, and the guns aren't fun enough to balance it out.
The levels are very pretty, though.
wrath is good but calling it heir to quake is blasphemy
The unnecessarily confusing hub really takes the shine off AD for me. There's no flow, it just a load of random maps accessed in an irritating way. It looks great and I'll take people's word for it that it contains great map design. I lost interest after two maps.
Q2 is a better game since it's machin gun line is not projectile but hitscan
Nah
