  • PetSmart's back rooms are off-limits to customers, and that's where the company hides away the immense suffering of the tiniest companion animals. During an undercover investigation, PETA documented that more than 100 small animals were deprived of effective veterinary care and were slowly dying-out of customers' sight. +PETA i worked at petsmart and i can 100% back up everything in this video. keep doing what your doing! I was terminated from petsmart for telling people 24 hours was not enough time for a proper nitrogen cycle to occur in a fishtank and denied selling the oscar cichlid to a 10 gallon home.

+PETA yes unfortunately. i remember the back rooms were always cold, where the small mammals that were both sick and waiting to be put on shelves lived. If anything it was a learning experience, i will never buy a pet from a live animal chain again and i refuse to work for people who cared more about their minimum wage paycheque then the innocent lives of the animals in need. i hope your mission is a success to stop the chains and you have my support!

I got one male guinea pig from Petco. He was alone in a tank with nothing to chew on. I adopted him hoping i could give him a better home. When i looked at him more closely i saw that he had a scar on his nose and parts of his ears were missing! Also the products they sell are terrible. They had like a two inch mesh wheel for gerbils and mice, like WTF!! Both Petco and Petsmart should be closed down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check a nearby town or city for small animal shelters. You can also look for small critter adopts through craigslist etc. We have a couple of bird/rodent shelters and some ferret sanctuaries where I live. If you're looking for fish or lizards, they have stores for those too. My best luck is at a bait&aquarium shop nearby.

Kate Wilson I got my pet guinea pig from a friend who adopted 2 "females" from another family who couldn't keep them no longer.
I had a pig from her 1st litter and he only lived to be about 5. He just stopped eating a drinking and I didn't know what I should do. by 2 days, when I came back from school he died. He didn't normally lay under his water bottle, but that is where I found him. and it was really sad bc my cousin pig did the same thing about a year and a half before mine did. I loved him and they didn't have any more litters.

I went to a pet store when I was around seven years old and I got a kitten there. we called her xexe (zee zee) the only reason we bought her is because of the terrible conditions she and her brothers and sisters were living in. xexe is long haired and she was covered in feces that had dried into her coat. Similar things happened to her brothers and sisters. They also all suffered from wjat looked like conjunctive eytis. so we asked that the kittens be cleaned and that the shit that littered the floor of the cage be cleaned. God the smell of urine was horrible. they refused to clean it saying it wad the managers decision and he wad not there. Bullshit. so we asked to buy all the kittens
they were selling for around 300 British and because there was four of them we just couldn't afford it. so we took the sickest weakest looking cat, Xexe. We took her home, cleaned her took her to a vet, got some stuff to sort her eyes and we also had to use a flee treatment as she was crawling with flees.
Xexe is now nine years old very healthy and an avid hunter.

I see like 30 in a cage and the house thing in there is packed up with mice.
And the people taking them out grabs them by the tails if their feisty.
Which is still rude when the person can get a different mouse :v

I went to petco for my birthday and saw 3ferrets, they looked so happy.. except one :( she was mistreated by the others, got no food, no water, and she was only a month old and her sliblings were adopted. All alone except for 2other ferrets that abused her, she had nothing. She looked helpless, scared, and worst of all, she was deaf. When my parents told me to get another ferret I refused until they said fine. Now at 3months old, she's my little baby :) She's the perfect pet I could ever wish for.. please like this for my baby girl :3

While some stores may vary in their care, the bottom line is that these animals were not meant to be kept like this. The overcrowding, stress, and lack of individualized attention is unacceptable. We're not blaming the staff, but the company that insists on continuing to cause animal deaths and suffering by selling them. PetSmart must stop selling animals.

Hey, here is an excerpt from our website:
"People who breed dogs and cats profit at animals' expense. There is no such thing as a "responsible" breeder, because for every puppy or kitten who is produced by any breeder, an animal awaiting adoption at an animal shelter loses his or her chance at finding a home-and will be euthanized."

I got my old hamster Hammy at Petco, which is also a terrible store. She was the best hamster ever! She was newly shipped, so I'm glad I saved her before anything happened... But now, she is dead. She lasted about 3 years. She was a happy playful Chinese Dwarf hamster, and I was expecting her to live 4 - 5 years! She was a sweetheart... and I will always remember her. I am so glad to rescue her from Petco, and given her a mansion of a cage, and a great life.

I saw a man taking a little baby rat once for snake food and Petsmart's rules say they try to prevent rats and mice from being fed alive to snakes and just offer them frozen. Do you think this counts as animal abuse? I think it's disgusting the way we experiment on animals and mistreat them. Rats in particular suffer so much and we do horrible things to them.

All of the images shown are clearly of hamsters with "Wet Tail." If you google the term, it will tell you that there are no steps you can take to prevent a hamster from getting wet tail. While the sickness is often fatal, no matter where the hamster is, they have a high risk of contracting the illness. This is not due to incompetency or negligence on the PetSmart's staff; maybe you should research this topic before accusing a franchise of animal mistreatment.

I could write a novel on how false this video is. I worked at a Petsmart earlier this decade, and I'll never forget my first encounter with a member of PETA. She demanded all the Bettas be put into one large tank with high flow (our plant tank). Male Bettas fight to the death if put together. Also, Bettas in the wild live in shallow puddles and breathe air. It is stressful for them to be in too large tanks with high flow. Our Petsmart's Bettas had daily water changes and were well cared for.

this store needs to be shut down.
i work at a petstore for almost half a year and only one hamster has died within that time. they had a vet appointment and we supplied medication.
to generalize all petstores like this is wrong. (even though i understand why) because not all pet stores are bad. some actually care.
yes i recognize that its few and far in between. but for those wondering if all petsmarts are like this.
it's not true. who ever is running that store needs to get a life lesson and it makes me greatful for my community to invest their care into these animals the way they do. when its a scar. or something people wouldn't normally want. we make sure people know theyre for adoption so they can at least get a home. instead of staying.

This isn't true for my store either. Most of the time animals are sick, we got them from the supplier that way & we take them to the vet immediatly. We were having a problem with wet tail for a while, but we almost always noticed it right away and took them to the vet. They then got better. If anything, that makes me wonder how well you were taking care of them. As for Isolation, we put them back there so they don't spread the disease.

I worked at petsmart, and petsmart will do anything they can to save a pet. We take them to the vet, but you can't save them all. They will save a Guinea pig and then adopt them out for free, all you have to do is ask the managers, that is how I got my 2 guinea pigs. I worked at Banfield (the vet's office at some Petsmart stores) as a vet tech and then head of veterinary techs for a few years. Banfield isn't even officially affiliated with Petsmart, other than renting space, and yet I can't tell you how many hours I've spent giving the store's small animals lyme dips, antibiotic ointments, antifungal treatments, wound dressings, and the rare euthanasia when all else fails. I've helped save countless little furry lives, so this is a slap in the face to me.

I currently work at a Petsmart and went through SO much training on how to treat the animals. They tell everyone -from the stockers to the cashiers- that if you see an injured or sick animal and don't do anything to help it, you will fired immediately. The rooms for sick pets are cleaned more than once a day and are immaculate. I think the person that made this video just has something against Petsmart.

They pinned us if you ask me. You want to save the poor animals but at the same time your giving them money to keep the darn thing running. I really true lay think that if there wasn't money in the world and people treated all life kind, it would be a wonderful place. But it's not. And that just sucks.Peace2life.

i bought a sick guinea pig there with a head tilt because one of the workers whispered to me 'please buy her or else they are throwing her out' she was very sick and i took her to the vet and never bought from petsmart again. she died recently only 1 1/2 years old. she had bronchitis and her heart failed. i went to feed her when she was laying on her side barely breathing. i took her out and held her until she passed. i buried her with her favorite toy and her blanky(i made her a blanket and she would carry it with her wherever she went and slept with it) i took wonderful care of her and i miss her so much. petsmart is evil and we need to stop buying from there. go to your local shelters and i guarantee there will be pets there you can buy

We post videos that document cruelty and we think it speaks for itself. We've seen all ends of the pet trade, the breeding, the shipping, and the flippant selling, and it's all irresponsible. These animals deserve more respect than this.

I've not only witnessed this at PetSmart, PETCO and other big chain petstores...but little "mom & pop" stores too. We have this exotics store down here, called Pet Safari and it is by far the worst kept store I've ever seen. Not only does it smell, but cages are suspended from wire hooks on the ceiling, dead hamsters, birds, and fish litter the bottom of the cages. The worst part is, this store does nothing but gloat about their USDA approved business.

i have worked for both petsmart and petco.. i was the aquarium and small animals specialist at each. i hated working there because i was instructed to neglect animals that needed care much more than routine chores that could be put off to save lives. i have vet experience, it was also horrific to care for individual pets and bond with them, only to be forced to hand them over to people who were clearly lying about their intentions to provide adequate care (i can tell when someone is just saying "okay" to shut me up yet is not actively purchasing any of the necessary supplies for the pet in question) on a daily basis. these corporations also fail to care for their employees by having terrible HR care, untrained management, and allowing bad admin to discriminate against their own employees within their stores. i boycott them both now, when before i used to love them. sometimes you have to see inside to really know.

I bought my guinea pig Cookie about 3 days ago from PetSmart. So far she is doing well. She is alert and loves to eat spinach. Last year around this time i had purchased a hamster from Petco who became Ill 3 days later and died in a weeks span. Everyday I come home from school terrified that Cookie won't greet me. So far I have been blessed. Next pet I get will be adopted. I knew pet mills were cruel. But not this cruel

I went to a pet-smart like last month. The pet-smart I go to is about 10 minutes away from my house in NY. Anyways, i was in the market for gerbils.. But there were no gerbils so i asked the lady if she had any more in the back, and she told me i'll check. And us said ill come with. She told me it was off limits and no one was aloud back there. So i said okay. And here she comes with about 10 medium sized gerbils crammed into this little tiny ass plastic container... I was about done right there. Never going to pet-smart again

honestly I don't care if you work at petsmart and that one is fine, apparently there ARE petsmarts that have this issue, and this isn't the only animal abuse case that petsmart has run into. I think the company should be regulated, and held responsible, even if out of their thousands of stores, only 5 are like this, because this shouldn't happen. period. every store should be abuse free.

These big commercial pet store are just terrible. I bought my first rat from a Petco 2 years ago..and have spend thousands in exotic vet care for him because of reoccuring URIs, tumors, and Congestive Heart Failure. He is on 4 different medications for life, totally $300+ a month for his longterm care. I NEVER step foot in these disgusting places anymore. Petco/Petsmart needs to take responsibility for their actions.

Then I walked over by some parrots and tried to talk to them, but they wouldn't look at me and just kept on chirping. Now that I know what goes on in these stores I am not going back. ever. Ever. I worked at BOTh PetSmart and Petco. I can tell you that it is not the company as a whole that mistreats these animals. It is usually the managers that have the authority to approve or deny vet care. I now work at a vet clinic that cares for all the Petco and PetSmart animals in our area. They do seek treatment, and give treatment when nessacary, and also euthanize when it is the humane decision. Got a problem with pet stores? Do YOU have a pet? WHATS THE DIFFERENCE???

I asked the employee if I could hold her. He gave her to me. Right away, I named her Pansey. Pansey looked up slowly, closed her eyes and rested her head on my hand. I waited for them to open, but they never did. R.I.P Pansey 05-16-11. But I know that not all Petsmarts are to blame. Just the ones who raise animals like Pansey.

This is horrible. My mother's co-workers daughter worked at Pet-Smart and she actually would buy the animals food because the animals weren't supplied enough food. I bought a snake at Monster Pets and I believed that Monster Pets took great care of their animals. The snake died a couple of days over a month from when I bought it. Throughout my childhood my parents bought hamsters, a rabbit, and a lot of fish because of my love for pets. And all of their lives were cut short. I will never support any type of pet shop again. I'm so upset as an animal lover and I'm ashamed that after all of PETA's work Animal Right's are still non-existent.

I received my first hamster from a friend, whose mother worked at Petco. I didn't expect anything, I was just very excited to finally have my own pet because our dog at the time was considered a family pet. however, when I came home and took her out of the cage.. she had scratches all over her belly. I was shocked and immediately took her to the vet. My mother was disappointed, while my father tried to stay positive. My next rodent, which was a guinea pig, was given to me from an animal shelter.

that's like the worst way to stop them!
if you buy a pet out of a store you only keep the market alive and are therefore also responsible for the further suffering of these animals.
If you really want to do something, demand to speak to the manager and explain that you will not be buying anything from the store as long as they sell live animals and that you will advise everyone you know to stay clear of pet smart.

I worked at a Petco for a year and like many other respondents this video seems to exagerate or was just a bad petsmart store. yes, a lot of hamsters died, but it was after a day or two after they were shipped to our store. Wet tail was very common because of the stress of being shipped. We'd remove the sick animals into a seperate cage to avoid spreading and to give specialized care. also, smalls animals were given small pieces of lettece to promote hydration since it contains a lot of water.

Just saying that is not every Petsmart we never have that many fish in one tank we separate them out, I am a pet care associate and I also happen to be working both as a Veterinary Technician and at Petsmart part time, and I can say for a fact we treat our animals really well. We are very vigilant and making sure that everyone is healthy and eating properly. If we notice for example we noticed that two juvenile bearded dragons were not letting the third one eat so we set him up in his own tank and made sure he got the correct nutrition. The back "rooms" that you so say are off limits to people is because we are treating sick animals for potential zoonotic diseases and making sure they are nursed back to health in my store as soon as an animal looks unhealthy we bring them to the vet. After that and receiving treatment if they are not improving we bring them back to the vet and go with another treatment plan UNLESS the vet recommends that we euthanize. The other employee's only room is a new arrivals room that is where we put the animals from the shipments we get to make sure 1) They are healthy 2) they aren't carrying diseases and 3) to de-stress them before having pet parents adopt them. NOT EVERY PETSMART IS THE SAME it depends on the state, management and the employees .

I work at petsmart, when our small animals get sick its the petcare associates job to take the animal over to Banfield's pet hosipital for treatment. It is also their job to care for the small animals, if done properly rarely do the animals die. If I were your manager I would blame you for this. You are the care taker of these animals there conditions are under your control, this is your fault. Maybe if you did your job instead of worring about slandering petsmart this wouldnt have happened.

I currently have two Guinea pigs, both from petsmart my second Guinea pig (Oreo) died, because for some reason he stopped eating and drinking, so I had to feed him through a syringe, he eventually started eating and drinking on his own but I still supervised him like crazy, but he eventually died in his favorite little hut, I still have his best friend pebbles with me today, also my third Guinea pig which is pebbles new best friend! When I got gizmo (my 3rd Guinea pig) he had mites which passed to pebbles, so I ended up taking them to the vet and they got shots and I had to give them medicine:( but today pebbles and gizmo are happy and healthy living in a c&c cage!:)
Moral of the story, if you buy a Guinea pig from petsmart you are gonna have a lot of vet bills & heartbreak
