    30 years ago, I worked at a small racetrack in New Orleans, LA. After I saw horses dropping dead, breaking legs and being shot, there was no choice for me but to NEVER condone or watch a horse race again. I quit the job. I had the chance of talking to some owners & jockeys and was told first hand it was true - they covered up the pain, drugged them and did whatever it took to make them run. I'll never, ever forget the horror.

    My grandma has rescued race horse. His name is River, and he was given so much drugs, he could barley walk or even stand. Thankfully he is doing better now, and spends his days eating, playing in the pasture with his friends, and enjoying life.

    I own an exracehorse. She has problems running to her other side because she only ever ran in one direction. She was not used to being turned out and just relaxing in a pasture. I'm training her and giving her the best life I can - I just wish I could save them all.

      What's eating away at the thoroughbred industry?
      Licensing! We license some of the worse people possible. They have no desire to become horsemen. They know very little about the horse and how to train one. Read the form. It's all right there.
      The test is ridiculous when you think about what is at stake. Horsemen are becoming a thing of the past. Any of us probably can point to less than a dozen. So very few trainers know that when horses reach 5 years old, they go through a mental change. They become adults, if you will. How many times have you seen an older horse get a freshening and expected to need one, romp with top speed numbers? Only to be run back in 21-28 days and watch the numbers digress, race after race. Now, the horse is mentally ruined because he told his trainer, the only way he knows how to communicate and got ignored. Now he starts a pattern of cheating. He gave up. Why? Because his trainer has no desire to become a horseman.
      The fix: Anyone applying for a trainers license must take a horsemanship course, designed to teach about speed horses and stayers and the vast difference in training. Training the horses mind. Knowing how to get a horse ready for 2 turns without it being a big surprise. A course that also sets them on a path to horsemanship. I mark really nice horses to stable mail and watch 80% of them go right down hill due to shear ignorance. I'm SICK of it. Back in 1972, I remember full fields, all day. I also remember no shortage of true horsemen. As they died off, they left us with pretenders. They intern turned out more pretenders. It's time to stop this destructive snowball and teach trainers how to train. Make testing far more intensive. Employ real horsemen to put together a course that works

    My friend's farm has a rescue horse who was a race horse. He is 8 and has severe arthritis. An 8 year old horse should not have severe arthritis! Dash is gorgeous and he has a very wide stride. And people really scare him sometimes if he doesn't know them because of what he's been through. PETA you should talk about the truth about pony rides. There's a few Shetland ponies up for adoption in illinois who are 30 years old and they were doing pony rides their whole lives. They don't have much longer to live. They denied the old ponies veterinary care. I believe it was Scout that almost died because his hip was so bent out of shape. Please shed some light on the horrors of pony rides.

    • @hollygolightly8048

      I'll shed some light on the horror of pony rides: MOST parents are morons whose only goal is to make sure their little Faberge Eggs are amused and catered to at any cost, including the life of a beautiful animal, hence the engaging in the idiotic ritual of riding a pony tethered to a metal merry-go-round, circling one way, for hours a day, 7 days a week for a lifetime. I think we should relegate humans to undertake such tasks to know what it is like.
      Sea World also falls in this category......caging one of the most intelligent mammals, a killer whale, for human entertainment is a sign of a perverse and a culturally corrupt society. Try a walk in the woods or doing something useful, like volunteering to help the elderly, and leave the animals alone or pretty soon there won't be any...only humans......6+ billion and more coming.....the horror

      I had a 6 year old with a beginning of arthritis , horses that young shouldn't have it,he's a racehorse who was sold to me because of an extremely bad injury that costed alot of money and they couldn't pay for it.i had enough money at that time so I got him and he got the surgery (a problem with his shoulder I forgot what it is since it happened 10 years ago) he's now 16 his arthritis has gotten worse and very very bad , thinking about putting him out of his misery since he also has developed many other health issues,he's a beautiful gelding that I love so much and as the first horse I have rescued and he made me start rescuing abused/kill pen/old race horses and giving them a home , hopefully they get a forever home with a person who loves them so much,
      He's a Gray overo paint horse (american paint horse) and cost me alot of money but I'll do anything for him

      I am no horse expert by the slightest stretch .No veterinarian either .Only notice the hypocrisy when it comes to different animals .You have many different wild animals that are rescued , transported back an forth around world .Some of them weight far more than a race horse .They go through different lifting apparatuses to move or to transport them to recovery or to locations - ie sedate them lift them or what ever .I feel horses can be done in a way as to sedate them instead of putting them down .The medical know how is here now .Has something to do with time and money .Like I said , animals are many times there sizes and height/weight , get much better care .

      It's a bit wierd seeing I'm a strapper. If you don't know that's the dude who walks them around before the jockeys get on them and onto the track. And I always keep my horses as calm as possible. We want them relaxed with their mind on the job. Not excited and hyped up. It's not a boxing match lol.

      Toxicpot76 I too thought that horses would be better to ride when they're not about to climb walls. Guess some are afraid the horses are too relaxed/idle?

    • @Toxicpot76
      @Toxicpot76 10 лет назад +4

      Well I do know we do things a bit differently in aus. As per pretty much everything mate. But I can assure you the horses under my care are kept as calm as possible until they are behind the barriers and in them. That's when they start getting pumped up. But you do get the beautiful horses whTs stay relaxed the whole time until they are let down in the straight. A lot of ppl always talk shif about the industry but until your in it you can't be certain. Although my stable is one of the top sydney ones. I can assure some trainers from the bush are doing stupid shit like this trying to make it big to the city.

    • @Rimfaxe96
      @Rimfaxe96 10 лет назад +2

      Toxicpot76 With racing it's like in every other equine sport - there are good stables, no doubt about that, whose horses have better lives than most humans. But when the number shifts that the 'bad guys' are getting the upper hand, it's very hard to focus on the good ones. Especially every time when horses out of those stables still die on the racetrack with broken pelvic bones etc... and seeing how in the US, the center of horseracing there are horses sold directly from the racetrack off to slaughter (even though it's illegal, but nobody seems to enforce those laws?!) and God-knows-what-else done to horses... turns my stomach, really. I remember how when I started my tumblr blog as memorial to dead racehorses a friend of mine just said "Sorry, I can't take a look at it, would get me mad pretty quick".

    • @Toxicpot76
      @Toxicpot76 10 лет назад +1

      To me over here in aus the sport is as safe and drug free as it ever has been. Horses are tested after races. On the weekend I had to take 6 to the test area. And we don't have many breakdowns over here. Yes we obviously have them but not as many as people would think. The horses in my trainers stable are always looked over a few times in the days leading upto their next race. And over here. Recently at one of our metro tracks so one of the big sydney ones we have a center were they take race horses who have been surrended and train them for life after racing. Most of them are giving to the police force all around the country. Or you get the real good owners that no matter how good or bad they are they are taken yo their property's and just live a nice life. I'm fortunate enough to have three lovely horses been given to me and they are so lovely they actually would live a better life then most humans haha. The racing game over here is watched like a hawk and the jockeys even have restrictions on how many times a horse can be whipped. Anyone who steps out of line faces lengthy bans or lifetime bans.

      Name one top trainer who trains and runs on oats, hay and water. You can't, because one does not exist. And why don't you use your real name if you're so sure you're correct? I grew up in this industry, and I know that you are incorrect. Most trainers use training meds out the Asmussen... the overwhelming majority do. There are a handful of boutique barns who train the way my daddy and paw-paw did (and the way I did), but the number is pathetically small. If you think Scott here is some kind of an anomaly, then you haven't spent much time on the backside.

      1. Horses are not physically meant to run at such condition, from standing to bolting for q few minutes, for running at such speed- there is a reason to why it's extremely common for horses to get injured during races. it's abuse, and the fact you admit your horse is getting injured/or/is getting frustrated and ill-tempered as much as to the usage of drugs is by-itself disturbing.
      2. a physical activity for horses like a trip, training (non-racing training), etc. is extremely important, but horse racing training is NOT, wanna know why no one in their right mind would consider horse-racing training a real physical, healthy, activity, but dressage and jumping they would, because Horse-racing is the activity that is not only physically demanding, (even if the horse is at top-notch state) on it's lungs, legs, feet, and entire body.
      for comparison, an average horse's top speed is 40-48 km/h, and the top record of all time is 88km/h. it requires a horse to run double it's average speed. it would be like asking you to compete against a cyclist. that is insane.
      3. people take drugs to feel better and calm down, most end up in the sorriest of states. recognize the fact you're harming horses while taking pride in it.

    A Poem for Race Horses
    There was once a racehorse, with a heart that was so proud.
    He raced for those who owned him, and of course, the crowd.
    He never knew that most of those, who applauded all his feats,
    Were there, just to collect, the gold beneath his feet.
    His heart it simply told him to always give his best,
    He ran because he loved to; speed beating in his chest.
    And when the cups were given, to the winners of the race,
    He never asked to drink from them, for he always knew his place.
    He was born, a strong and awesome steed,
    Put-upon the racetrack, to feed the punters greed.
    When his racing days were over, and it was time to rest,
    To quietly retire with those, for whom he did his best.
    Instead of lush green pastures, he himself had earned,
    He was loaded on a lorry, then shunted to a pen.
    He of course was frightened, and couldn’t understand,
    Why those who always loved him, weren’t cheering from the stands.
    There were no gentle hands, no hay, no chaff no grain,
    Those who used to cheer him, were causing only pain.
    He smelt the blood of his stable mates,
    Then he knew what lay behind, those dreadful killing gates.
    Now we have to mourn you; you gentle giving soul,
    You never knew how things would be, when you were just a foal.
    In our hearts, your hoof beats should have found, a special place.
    Instead you were a racehorse, that we could just replace.
    He had a heart and yes, a soul; but could not talk to you.
    To him who always trusted us, we were never true.

    I'm sick of people saying horse racing should be illegal, it's what these horses were bred to do. Not saying drugging them is a good thing but most deaths in horse racing are uncontrollable. Say the horse falls in a race they will kill the horse only if it has a broken leg but thats because they dont want the horse to suffer by not racing, and not being able to walk etc. so stop saying it should be illegal learn the sport first.

    I grew up on a thoroughbred farm..We had about 40 horses at one point...All of them were treated with the utmost care...We took care of our horses because they put food on our table. I was so connected and loving to them, that I still go and visit some of them at their new "retired" farm.. Now, obviously we were the exception. I have been to multiple backsides, and in the barns of famous trainers, and it was a whole different ball game.. They just want to milk the horses for all their worth, and then throw them away.. Its a shame...

  • @AddyRides
    @AddyRides 2 года назад +2

    I am a 2 1/2 year saddle seat rider with over 40+ horses at my barn, but I’ve never liked the idea of horse racing. A horse is never supposed to run at its top speed, it causes it to break its ankles or die of exhaustion. There are some “safer horse racing” but the horse shouldn’t be running extremely fast. If you wanted to start Horse racing, it’s really dangerous for the rider as well. So if you were thinking about doing a type of equitation try showing or just plain riding! :)

Yes, sadly there are sick ppl who abuse their animals like this but it doesn't discount that the majority of us w/horses take really good care of them! I know lots of racers who break down emotionally more over their horses than humans do w/dogs. I am glad this video is exposing those who are disgusting, but ppl saying we shld ban the kentucky derby bc of a select few bad apples is insane. thats like banning football and basketball bc players have been arrested. All you can do is try your best to stop the abusers from competing, but stop w/the agenda to ban all racing!

    It's such a beautiful thing to watch a horse and jockey working together, running like the wind in a structured environment for everyone to see. This truly, truly breaks my heart. The price is so very high for what we see on the track. Horses are essentially prey. They always have been. So they are, in fact, vulnerable to exploitation in a variety of ways. I'd like to preserve the sport in a humane way, but the evidence seems to indicate that it may not be possible. I'm open to a ban on painkillers, stricter dietary requirements, slower finishing times and so forth. Would that be enough?

You hear about multiple charities and organizations dedicated to human rights/ Cancer research/ Education in third world countries and so forth, Animal rights has taken a low standing on the international level. So I guarantee you that one organization trying to raise awareness about an issue many overlook will not harm the over-all well being of humanity.

However, when their racing career is over, its the knacker yard for the majority of them, unless they are sold on for stud. It is the same for greyhound racing. This is NOT what the sport is about. PETA did not make a single accusation of illegal activity, and even if they did they woukd be at fault for not immediately reporting the crime. If PETA actually cared about the horses, they would make an attempt at rescuing the horses from the alleged dangerous location instead of simple videotaping it to try to smear the sport's reputation. Asmussen is a bad apple, and not all trainers are like him. If you want proof, look at this year's Kentucky Derby winner and his trainer. I can assure you thst 77 year old Art Sherman loves his California Chrome dearlyband would never mistreat him.

    Horse racing is an abusive industry. Horses regularly are permanently injured and breakdown. Top trainers and backyard trainers -the goal is the same and horses suffer. There is nothing natural about running at top speed carrying a rider at two. This kills horses. Trainers and owners know this.

    Horse racing is all fun and games until a drugged horse breaks a leg on the track and they bring out the "screen of shame" so the people watching can't see them dragging the mangled or dead horse into a trailer to get it off the track. And that's a fact! This just again happened at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, AZ on April 6, 2014 when a 2 year old Quarter horse filly named Blondie La Jolla broke her leg in the second race of the day. It was her first and last race because now she's dead! "Turf Paradise" is a very misleading name, there is no turf. They race on dirt. It should be called "Dirt Paradise" and trust me, that beat up old hell hole of a racetrack is certainly no paradise!
